Package Festival (Original poster brochure, 1953)

New York: John Cage, 1953. Poster brochure advertising a festival concept, developed by John Cage and David Tudor, designed to feature recitals, readings, dance classes, lectures, and panel discussions. Composers, musicians, poets, and thinkers on board for the festival of "experimental" works included Cage, Tudor, Merce Cunningham, and Mary Caroline Richards. Rather than being a poster for a particular planned event, this "brochure" was designed to advertise the concept of such a thing to colleges and universities. It was 1953, and Cage was meeting with a wall of rejections for grants, fellowships, and even work in animated films or as a writer for magazines. The Package Festival was as experimental as any of the composers work, literally an idea that Cage hoped would offer not only himself, but the growing number of contemporaries whom we would ultimately make famous on an international scale. In his biography of Cage, Kenneth Silverman notes: "The festival offered a dance program by Cunningham, a recital of contemporary music by Tudor, and a lecture on "Artaud and New Theatre"--three programs a day for three days. Each event had its own price tag, from $750 for the dance down to $100 for the lecture. But if a client bought more than one event a discount began to operate, making the discounted cost fvo the entire three day festival $1250. ...the Package Festival found no sponsors at the time...[and] Cage left Stony Point to concertize and lecture for two months abroad." 17.5 x 18.5 inches. (44.5 x 47 cm), 8.75 x 9.25 inches (22.25 x 23.5 cm) folded. Brown newsprint stock with offset printing in black. Near Fine. Silverman, p. 123.

Autograph letter signed, dated 72 Regent Street, London, July 14, 1853

In fine condition.. Single sheet folded to make four pages, approximately 750 words. To the critic and important figure in American literature, Edwin Percy Whipple. "My Dear Percy / I cannot thank you enough for yr. letters. They are filled with good things and I only wish I had / the writer here to pay him with a hug. Lord, Lord, Lord, what a time I am having and how I wish you were here. / Day unto Day uttereth invitations and Night unto Night sheweth forth Dinners! / . . . How much you would have / enjoyed dear old Savage Landor's chat over a breakfast at John Kenyons last week when I sat between both / these writers and listened like a three year old child. Landor's remarks are as startling as the first clap of thunder in / a fresh summer and his criticisms wd convulse you. Let me try and remember some of them / We were talking of style. 'God d-n it,' said he 'the man who wrote English was Ben Franklin! Doctor Johnson was nobody beside him!" Fields also writes about meeting Alexander Dyce, Lord Russell, and sends gossip about John Wilson (Christopher North) of Edinburgh ("Professor Wilson is in a mad house!"). Fields and Whipple were close friends from the beginnings of their literary careers. This is an early example of Fields' correspondence. The majority of letters cited in James Austin's Fields of the Atlantic Monthly (Huntington Library, 1953) are after 1860.

La Clé des Champs [INSCRIBED & SIGNED BY BRETON]

Paris: Les Éditions du Sagittaire, 1953. First trade edition. Softcover. g-. Small quarto. 286pp. Uncut and unopened copy. Original illustrated dust-jacket over printed wrappers. Jacket superbly illustrated by Miró. Half-title inscribed and signed by the author to "Aux amis d'Indice, hommage d'André Breton. "La Clé des Champs" collects commentaries, introductions, declarations, and reviews written between the late 1930s and early 1950s, all of which show that Breton has not given up seeking all manner of keys to art that is capable of giving free rein to the imagination. He elaborates upon themes already presented in the first "Manifesto of Surrealism" (1924), Nadja (1928), Surrealism and Painting (1928), and L'Amour fou (Mad Love) (1937), namely the ascendancy of an inner vision over an exterior outlook, the greater effectiveness of analogical thinking, and the power of certain objects to release the insights characteristic of a visionary (as opposed to merely visual) perspective. Moderate creasing and light damp-staining along edges of dust-jacket. Upper part of wrappers slightly foxed. Pages age-toned throughout. Light damp-staining along upper margin of pages (not affecting text or illustrations). Dust-jacket, wrappers and interior in overall good- condition.

[Brass binding die-stamp for the spine and front board of]: Harvey

New York: Oxford University Press. 1953. First. Two brass die-stamps. Spine stamp measures 5.5" x .75". Front board stamp is irregularly shaped and is 4" x 2.5" at its biggest points.Original patina, else fine. The binder's stamp for the spine and front board of the first hardcover edition of the play ("Chase / Harvey / Oxford") in reverse script. The comedic play was a success on Broadway, running for five years and winning a Pulitzer Prize, but wasn't published in hardcover until after the success of the 1950 film directed by Henry Koster and starring James Stewart, Josephine Hull, and Peggy Dow. The binding and the jacket were both designed by noted graphic designer and cartoonist R.O. Blechman. There was an acting edition published in wrappers in 1950.The provenance presents a mildly interesting story: a colleague was buying books out of the trunk of a gentleman's car and noticed a group of wartime brass die-stamps from the Oxford University Press. My colleague inquired and the gentleman revealed that his next stop was the scrap yard where he was going to sell the dies to be melted down for the brass. My colleague paid him double the scrap price for them. We paid a bit more. A unique artifact from a play that is extremely uncommon in its own right. .

New York: Ace Books, Inc., 1953 First edition, first printing. Bound dos à dos with Maurice Helbrant's Narcotic Agent. Publisher's pictorial paper wrappers, lettered in white and yellow. About fine, with a hint of rubbing to the extremities, faint toning to the otherwise fresh pages. A handsome copy of Burroughs' first book. Housed in a custom quarter morocco slipcase with matching chemise. Maynard and Miles A1a. Junkie is a semi-autobiographical novel about a heroin addict living in New York City that was first published under Burroughs' penname William Lee. Specifically, Burroughs chronicles the events and struggles in the daily life of a heroin addict, rather than the psychoactive thrills of being high. Indeed, as he remarks in the preface, "Junk is notÂ… a means to increased enjoyment of life. Junk is not a kick. It is a way of life." Like the majority of the author's works, Junkie is comprised of a series of vignettes (called "routines"), but the text is easily one of the most linear texts of Burroughs' writing; the author had not yet fully developed his cut-and-paste methodology that would shape his later works. Interestingly, Burroughs originally chose the title Junk for this novel, but it was published by Ace as Junkie, because the publishers thought that "Junk" would indicate that the novel was itself a literal piece of junk rather than a study of drug use.. First Edition.. Soft Cover. Fine.
