        The Long Good-Bye

Hamish Hamilton, London 1953 - 320 pages. Small octavo (7 1/2" x 5 1/4") bound in original publisher's maroon with silver lettering to spine in original pictorial jacket. Jacket design by Fritz Wegner. (Bruccoli A10.1.a.) First edition, first printing. The English edition preceded the American by a few months. Critics and writers, ranging from W. H. Auden to Evelyn Waugh to Ian Fleming, greatly admired the finely wrought prose of Raymond Chandler. Although his swift-moving, hardboiled style was inspired mostly by Dashiell Hammett, his sharp and lyrical similes are original: "The muzzle of the Luger looked like the mouth of the Second Street tunnel"; "The minutes went by on tiptoe, with their fingers to their lips", defining private eye fiction genre, and leading to the coining of the adjective 'Chandleresque', which is subject and object of parody and pastiche. Yet, Philip Marlowe is not a stereotypical tough guy, but a complex, sometimes sentimental man of few friends, who attended university, speaks some Spanish and, at times, admires Mexicans, is a student of classical chess games and classical music. He will refuse a prospective client's money if he is ethically unsatisfied by the job. The high critical regard in which Chandler is generally held today is in contrast to the critical pans that stung Chandler in his lifetime. In a March 1942 letter to Mrs. Blanche Knopf, published in Selected Letters of Raymond Chandler, Chandler complained: "The thing that rather gets me down is that when I write something that is tough and fast and full of mayhem and murder, I get panned for being tough and fast and full of mayhem and murder, and then when I try to tone down a bit and develop the mental and emotional side of a situation, I get panned for leaving out what I was panned for putting in the first time." Chandler's short stories and novels are evocatively written, conveying the time, place, and ambiance of Los Angeles and environs in the 1930s and 1940s. The places are real, if pseudonymous: Bay City is Santa Monica, Gray Lake is Silver Lake, and Idle Valley a synthesis of rich San Fernando Valley communities. Raymond Chandler also was a perceptive critic of pulp fiction; his essay "The Simple Art of Murder" is the standard reference work in the field. All but one of his novels have been cinematically adapted, notably The Big Sleep (1946), by Howard Hawks, with Humphrey Bogart as Philip Marlowe; novelist William Faulkner was a co-screenplay writer. Raymond Chandler's few screen writing efforts and the cinematic adaptation of his novels proved stylistically and thematically influential upon the American film noir genre. Condition: Previous owner's small neat signature and acquired date and place on front end paper, head corners gently bumped. Jacket professionally repaired at spine ends and edges, slight rippling and soiling at back else a very good copy in like jacket. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Some Faces in the Crowd (First Edition, inscribed in the year of publication)

Random House, New York 1953 - First Edition. INSCRIBED by Schulberg to his top editor, Saxe Commins, in the year of publication on the verso of the half-title page: "For Saxe / Dear friend and guide through all these many years. Looking forward to many more fruitful hours and years of work together / Yours affectionately / Budd / April 17, 1953." Saxe Commins, along with Bennett Cerf of Random House, encouraged Schulberg to expand a series of short stories in Liberty magazine into a novel, which eventually became "What Makes Sammy Run?" Near Fine in a Very Good plus dust jacket. A bit of foxing to the edges of the boards; jacket is lightly rubbed and nicked at the corners, with a bit of the usual toning to the spine panel. The first story in this collection, "Your Arkansas Traveler," is the basis for Elia Kazan's under appreciated and brutal film noir, "A Face in the Crowd," starring Andy Griffith, Patricia O'Neal and Walter Matthau. Schulberg signed a lot of books after penning the screenplay to "On the Waterfront" in 1954, but inscriptions dated prior to that time are most uncommon. A powerful association between Schulberg and his first major editor, the man who literally introduced him to the limelight. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

"ACE DOUBLE SCIENCE FICTION 'D' SERIES COMPLETE IN 76 VOLUMES" : Solar Lottery, Cry Plague!, World of Null-A, Alien from Arcturus, Conan the Conqueror, Last Planet, Man with Nine Lives (SIGNED), Big Planet, Ring Around the Sun, Many Others

New York: Ace Books D Series 1st Editions and Later Printings 1953, 1954, 1955, 1956, 1957, 1958, 1959, 1960 & 1961 ----------76 paperbacks, all Ace Science Fiction Doubles, also referred to as tete-beche or dos-a-dos, describing books which when flipped over reveal another cover and book. Ace issued their science fiction doubles from 1953 to 1973 (there were "doubles" beyond 1973, but they bore a single cover which listed both books). The books were issued in 5 letter-prefix series based on original cover price, and 1 numerical series. Offered here is the FIRST letter-prefix series, the "D" series, consisting of 76 volumes issued from 1953 to 1961, and bearing an original cover price of $0.35. It is the COMPLETE set of Ace SF doubles D series, starting with the controversial D-13, to D-517. D-13 is not always included in D series SF double listings, as only one-half the book, Cry Plague! by Theodore S. Drachman, is science fiction (the other half is a mystery, Judas Goat by Leslie Edgley). D-31, containing 2 Van Vogt novels, is often cited as the "first" SF double. In any event, the rare D-13 is included here, and it is in fine condition. The D series consisted of both reprints and first editions, and several authors made their first book appearances here. Notable first book appearances are by Philip K. Dick (Solar Lottery, his first book, and 5 other first editions), Gordon R. Dickson (Alien from Arcturus), Harlan Ellison (his first SF novel and first SF collection in one double, both sides SIGNED by Ellison). Other writers made several appearances, both as reprints and first editions, such as A.E. Van Vogt, Andre Norton, Robert Silverberg, John Brunner, E.C. Tubb, Clifford Simak, Robert Moore Williams, Murray Leinster, Poul Anderson, Eric Frank Russell and Brian Aldiss. Condition of the books ranges from VG to unread fine, with most being at least near fine. Very attractive colourful books, with many covers by Ed Emshwiller ("EMSH" hidden in the painting, fun to find) and Ed Valigursky (unsigned but distinctive menacing robots and needle-nosed spaceships). Inquiries on condition or requests for cover scans of individual volumes are welcomed. . Later and/or First Printings. Mass Market Paperback. Near Fine. Illus. by Ed Emshwiller, Ed Valigursky, Lou Marchetti, Stanley Meltzoff, Robert Schultz, John Schoenherr, Others (front covers). Note: our prices on Biblio are the LOWEST of any of the sites on which we list our books.

Boat House, Laughharne, Carmarhenshire, 15. VII. 1953. - 8vo. ¾ p. "Dear Leslie Collier, Apologies. I was in America when you came to Carmarthen, that couldn't be helped. But I've been back a month now, and I haven't written to say how sorry I was to have missed you and how I hope, whenever you're next in this part, you'll come along and have drinks. No letters were forwarded when I was away, so unfortunately, I couldn't let you know; but I could have written much sooner than this. My only excuse is that I have been busy about the country ever since I returned; and that's a poor excuse, I know. My wife also wants to apologise for not having seen you when you were down. Anyway, I shall look forward. Sincerely yours, Dylan Thomas". - A few light stains, and some mounting remnants on the verso, otherwise very fine. From the collection of Diana Herzog.

        Celui qui ne m'accompagnait pas

Gallimard, 1953.
