Collection of 12 autograph letters dating from January 2008 to June 2009 discussing a number of the composer's own works including the Friday Evening Service, the Torah Service, O To Be a Dragon, 2 Psalms, etc., all to the award-winning American choral conductor Harold Rosenbaum

1953. A Canadian-born American composer, pianist and conductor, Wyner studied at Juilliard, at Yale with Hindemith, and at Harvard with Piston, among others. "After a period at the American Academy in Rome (1953-6), he was active as a performer and composer in New York. His teaching appointments have included positions at the Yale School of Music (from 1963), the Tanglewood Music Centre (1975-97), SUNY, Purchase (1978-89), where he also served as dean of music (1978-82), and Brandeis University (from 1989) as well as visiting professorships at Harvard (1991-7). Among his honours are two Guggenheim fellowships (1958-9, 1977-8), the Brandeis Creative Arts Award, the Elise Stoeger Prize of the Lincoln Centre Chamber Music Society, and commissions from the Ford Foundation and the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival. He was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1999.Wyner's early works, such as the Partita for piano, show a neo-classical influence; later, he moved towards freer forms, employing jazz rhythms and a more varied chromatic language. The Concert Duo for violin and piano reflects this widening stylistic range. Many compositions are influenced by his Jewish heritage and experience; one of the most important of these is the Friday Evening Service. Major compositions from the late 1970s onwards, such as Fragments from Antiquity and On this most Voluptuous Night, are highly expressive works for solo voice and instruments." Vivian Perlis in Grove Music Online. Many of the Wyner's works were performed by Rosenbaum's distinguished professional choir, The New York Virtuoso Singers.. The letters include discussion of revisions to various works, translations, rehearsals, suggestions for performance, financial matters, etc. With especially detailed commentary on the Torah Service: "A short prayer... is intended before the Sh'ma begins. Therefore it is not really attacca. This is a service intended for worship use, not as a normal Concert pierce... The Aliahs were written to provide a quiet procession for each person(s) ascending the Bimah... You can do as many as you wish, but the refrain should separate each one..." (letter of March 5, 2009) and corrections to the bar count in the score as "AMP was careless in not sending you updated scores..." (letter of March 23, 2009). The letters also include high praise for Rosenbaum's interpretation of the composer's works: "Thank you for your enthusiastic embrace of my music, for the mobilization of splendid singers, for your meticulous, comprehensive preparation of the music, for your scrupulous attention to even the smallest detail and for your unflagging concentration in projecting the overall work in performance." (June 8, 2009).

An archive of letters from Kissinger, as Executive Director of the Harvard International Seminar, to Philip Rice, as Chairman, regarding the 1953 seminar. At this time, the CIA was using the program to launder funds via grants from "privately sponsored programs," and during the same period, Kissinger was covertly working with the FBI.

Cambridge, Massachusetts, 1953. Various. "An archive of 12 typed document letters, 8.5"" x 11"", and reports between Henry A. Kissinger and Philip Rice. Includes five signed letters from Kissinger. Dates range from February 26, 1953 to September 28, 1953, and include an overview and a report of the 1953 Harvard International Seminar.Kissinger, the director and chief fundraiser for the Harvard International Seminars, financed the program completely through grants from private foundations. The mandate for the seminars was to create a program that brought to Harvard rising stars in foreign policy and political, cultural, and literary life from Europe and Asia to school them in American foreign policy, and within certain bounds, to promote ""freedom of exchange,"" reaching beyond the existing exchange program.""The program of the International Seminar is based on the assumption that the real block in America's impact on the world is not displease with specific U.S. policies but a lack of confidence in America's moral stature""The general principles from the ""Report of The Harvard International Seminar"" (which is included in this archive) are as follow:""GENERAL PRINCIPLES --The Harvard International Seminar is designed for a group not reached by any existing exchange program…It is our belief that a meeting of the most promising representatives of this group in an atmosphere like that of Harvard, created by a privately sponsored program, would go far to promote a better appreciation of common problems and of America's deeper values.""Aside from the inherent success of the program, it also sought controversy as it was privately sponsored by outside grants and not by Harvard. By 1967, several of those foundations appeared on the Times' list of CIA conduits. One of them, the Friends of the Middle East, had funneled $243,000 to the Harvard International Seminar. Abigail Collins Fichter, Kissinger's administrative assistant in the 1960s, recalls in Ralph Blumenfeld's Henry Kissinger: The Private and Public Story, that Kissinger ""was running around saying, 'Oh, my God, this is terrible. People are going to say I'm working for the CIA."" Kissinger may not have fully comprehended his CIA connections because the agency often laundered its funds through a series of foundations to obscure their origins. But the disclosure in 1953 of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) document shows that Kissinger consciously sought and directly worked with the FBI while at Harvard. On July 10, the FBI recorded his name in its memo, identifying him simply as a ""teacher at Harvard University” … “called the FBI, reported he had information of interest to the bureau and asked that an agent call him back.” That afternoon an SAC (the FBI code word for Special Agent in Charge) interviewed Kissinger, who explained that he directed the International Seminar, which included persons from foreign countries who ""are highly placed economically and politically in their own nation."" Ab 1913 stellte er regelmäßig u.a. bei der Großen Berliner Kunstausstellung, der Freien Secession und der Berliner Secession aus. Von 1935 bis '45 zog er sich auf Grund von Denunziation und Repressionen zurück und übte öffentlich nur seinen Lehrberuf aus, der ihm materielle Unabhängigkeit sicherte.         The Stronghold. An Account of the Four Seasons in the White Mountains of Crete. With Photographs by Diane Bath. IN UNCLIPPED DUSTWRAPPER

Secker & Warburg, [1953]. 8vo., First Edition, with a portrait frontispiece, 17 photographs on 12 plates, a large folding map on japon and endpaper maps; original green cloth, gilt back, top and fore-edges a little dust-soiled else a very good, bright, clean copy in unclipped dustwrapper, the latter lightly browned at backstrip. Fielding (1918-1991) was one of the first SOE agents (with Paddy Leigh Fermor and Dick Barnes) to be landed in Crete where he spent two years or so in a precarious game of hide and seek with the occupying Germans. Arrested in France later in the war, he was saved from execution by the Polish SOE agent Krystyna Skarbek. In post-war years a close friend of Lawrence Durrell, Fielding developed a career as writer and translator, achieving acclaim for his translation of 'The Bridge on the River Kwai'. This scarce account, a worthy complement to the legendary 'Hide and Seek', is the story of a year spent in Crete after the war, going by day where previously he had been only by night and delving deeply into the island's turbulent history. In particular the intimacy conjured by his many wartime friendships enable him to provide a close and respectful picture of the life of the country. The photographs are by Daphne Bath, whom Fielding later married. The work includes a bibliography. EXTREMELY SCARCE, ESPECIALLY IN THIS CONDITION

Carnival in Flanders (Original program from the 1953 play)

N.p., N.p. 1953 - Original program for the notorious Broadway flop, "Carnival in Flanders." An interesting and rare piece documenting a directorial and writing effort from the strange final years of Sturges' career. The program was printed well prior to Sturges' arrival to the production--as a result, though the musical was never staged prior to his involvement, it still credits the original writers (George Oppenheimer, Herbert Fields) and director (Bretaigne Windust).A quite forgotten musical with a troubled production and a rapid demise. When the musical, an adaptation of the classic French film, "La Kermesse Héroïque" (1934), was first conceived, Harold Arlen was approached to write the score, but the task ultimately fell to Van Heusen and Burke. Bing Crosby provided much of the financing for the production and had great faith in the songwriting team, who had written several of his hits (despite the fact that their previous theatrical collaboration, "Nellie Bly" (1946), had been a critical and commercial flop). George Oppenheimer, one of the book's original co-writers, withdrew from the project during pre-Broadway tryouts in Philadelphia, and Dorothy Fields joined her brother Herbert to help with rewrites. Eventually all their work was discarded by Preston Sturges, who replaced Bretaigne Windust as director and completely reworked the book before the show reached California for a series of stagings by light opera companies prior to the New York City opening. Choreographer Jack Cole was replaced by Helen Tamiris, and several cast changes were made before the troubled production finally opened on Broadway."Carnival in Flanders" opened on September 8, 1953 at the New Century Theatre, where it ran for only six performances. The cast included John Raitt, Dolores Gray, and Roy Roberts. Critics were enchanted by Oliver Smith's sets and Lucinda Ballard's costumes, inspired by Brueghel paintings, and Gray's lively performance, but universally panned every other aspect of the production. In his review for The New York Times, Brooks Atkinson wrote "As an actress she [Dolores Gray] is authoritative enough to bring down the house with some of the maudlin songs. In the version prepared for the stage by Preston Sturges it is laborious and banal. As usual, the theatre has lavished a lot of wealth and talent on this hokum. Lucinda Ballard has dressed everybody to the nines. Although Oliver Smith's scenery is cluttered and rather desperate, there is certainly a lot of it."Ironically, this nearly forgotten musical is the source for the well loved Van Heusen-Burke standard "Here's That Rainy Day."Saddle stitched, illustrated card wrappers. 16 pages, 9 x 12 inches. Faint vertical crease to the front wrapper, light rubbing to wrappers, overall easily Very Good plus. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

[On the Waterfront, here titled:] Waterfront

[New York], 1953. 4to. Original shooting script. [3], 111 pp. numbered through 109, with the insertion of pages 22A and 31A. Original typed title-page, and two styles of mechanical reproduction. Original printed wrappers closed with three contemporary brass clasps (wrappers with some chipping and toning at edges); cloth folding case. PRODUCTION MANAGER GEORGE JUSTIN'S COPY: signed in red pencil by him on the title, and annotated throughout in pencil. Justin numbers each of the shots, crosses out and adds dialogue and production notes throughout. 'On the Waterfront' was a critical and commercial success and received twelve Academy Award nominations, winning eight, including Best Picture, Best Actor for Marlon Brando, Best Supporting Actress for Eva Marie Saint, and Best Director for Elia Kazan. Considered Kazan's response to those who labelled him a Communist before the House Committee on Un-American Activities in 1952, the first screenplay was written by Kazan's friend and collaborator Arthur Miller. It was originally titled 'The Hook', and Harry Cohn at Columbia Pictures agreed to make the film if the corrupt union officials in the early version were changed to Communists. Miller refused, in part because he did not like it that Kazan gave friendly testimony before the HUAC. It was then that Kazan turned to Budd Schulberg. Studio rejections from Darryl F. Zanuck lead them to independent producer Sam Spiegel and Columbia Pictures. Schulberg's script went through numerous changes. In early versions, for instance, Terry Malloy was not an ex-pug dockworker, but an investigative reporter, and an older, divorced man. In 1937, George Justin (1916-2008) had been the test director for George Cukor on casting 'Gone With the Wind.' His first credit as Producer or Production Executive was 'On the Waterfront', and he continued producing movies and television until 1994. He worked again with Kazan on 'A Face in the Crowd', made three films with Sidney Lumet, and was part of the production team for 'The Graduate' and '12 Angry Men.' This copy of his personal shooting script for one of the undisputed classics of American cinema offers a unique insight into the making of film.

        Korean War-Era Navy Letters

New Jersey, Japan. 1953 - 1954. An intriguing collection of 403 letters between Bayonne, New Jersey native, Alton L. Lattig and his fiance, Marion Lynde during his tour with the Navy at the end of the Korean war. All letters are in envelopes and near fine with slight curling and tears from opening. Also included are two newsletters and 41 photographs.Alton Lattig, who refers to himself as "Mike" throughout his correspondence, was on active duty with the U.S. Navy from 1953 until 1954. He was stationed on the U.S. Tarawa (CVA-40) which had just been recommissioned as an attack aircraft carrier in response to the Korean War. They embarked on a mission that took them from Gibraltar to the Asiatic over the course of two years. "Arrived safely last night at 11:45 and sure hated to come back aboard this pig-iron tub, but as the saying goes you can't fight city hall." They were sent as part of the replacement for the 2nd and 6th Navy fleets on a tour that took them to Gibraltar, Spain, Japan, Australia, and Korea before returning to Pearl Harbor and home. "We are now 1,671 miles from "Rock of Gibraltar" and we are due to pull in there on the morning of the 23rd and will remain a couple of days ad pull out for Algiers...will let you know as we go along from port to port." When granted shore leave they participated in local activities, "I went to another bull fight this afternoon and it was really better than the other one I saw, there was more slaughtering in the fights today." Their duties sent them on missions that mainly involved refueling and replenishing the Air Force and other Navy vessels. "Well we just finished refueling a destroyer around 6:15...we were supposed to do 2 cans but it got sort of late and they have flight operations again tonight so we have to get up early in the morning and refuel the other one."Shortly after enlisting Lattig was scheduled to take his test to raise higher in rank; "Tomorrow morning I am taking a test for 3rd class Petty Officer and sure hope I make it this time. I passed it last time but the quota was filled and they wouldn't give it to me...with a little luck I will make it. It not only means more money but I won't have to take too much bossing around I will be able to boss people around a little." With a young wife at home the extra money from the position was useful and appreciated. It was also good for the card games that kept the men occupied. "I am going to keep playing as long as I win, but as soon as my luck starts running out I am going to quit, I know it's an awful thing to gamble but what else have we to do here in the middle of nowhere."On April 7, 1954 while stationed in Japan he writes, "Hon, I don't know if I mentioned in one of my letters when we were operating or not, but we were operating with the Oriskany when that plane caught fire we watched it from the flight deck. (The clipping you sent) that is the way we have some of our planes come in and lose altitude too fast and crack up, very very seldom does any pilot get hurt too bad but some of them luck isn't with them.""We are in the South China Sea heading for Japan and we will pull into Japan on the 15th instead of 14th (Valentine's Day) I sure wish it were in the U.S....but we have 121 days to go over here before we start back home for the good old U.S.A." This was in February of 1954, a few months before they would head home. They spent roughly 2 years repairing and refueling aircraft at the end of the war. After the armistice they were sent to clean up after the war and became a roaming sea airbase. By September on 1954 they arrived safely on the shores of California.Along with the letters Lattig sent back two "Tradewinds" newsletters from his ship with the caption, "Send me home" printed above the address. They include Navy related articles, photos of the crew, and each one provides a Hollywood starlet on the last page. March 1, 1954 has Lizabeth Scott posing on a beach while May 1, 1954 has Lucy Marlow in fishnets dubbed, "the saucy charmer." He also kept photographs of his shipmates posing around the barracks, his fiance, and some of a marriage, possibly his own after the war. One particularly nice photo is of a bunch of sailors around table of drinks presumably laying on the charm. An extensive collection of letters detailing the life of a sailor after a short and unwarranted war which would lay the ground work for Vietnam.List:-403 handwritten letters in envelope-U.S.S. It measures 11" high x 8", with 2 corners slightly trimmed and an unpainted area where text would be. The second image (on p. 27) is of a cat sticking its head out of a large wicker basket that is sitting outside in the grass at night with stars in the sky. The image measures 5 1/2" high x 4 1/2". Rojankovsky was a Russian emigre artist who became an important illustrator of children's books.
