        Annual Automobile Review

Edita, Lausanne - 8 volumes, various paginations. The first 8 issues. Issue no 1 (1953 - 1954) is in fact in paperback format, which the publishers clearly dispensed with for subsequent issues.         Kynaston Studd - Baronet of Netheravon in the County of Wiltshire, of Eton, Cambridge and the Polytechnic London, Lord Mayor London 1928-29

The Polytechnic, London 1953 - xix + 121 pages, a fine and very scarce biography of this excellent Briton. Forewords by The Lord Bishop of Peterborough, Sir Gerald Dodson, The Dean of Battle and Sir Pelham Warner. Sir Kynaston (JEK) Studd was born 1858 and died 1944. He was the eldest of five cricketing brothers; he appeared for Eton 1875-7, MCC 1878-85, Cambridge University 1881-4, and Middlesex 1882-4. His longtime involvement with The Polytechnic (now the University of Westminster) in London is chronicled, indeed well chronicled as the biographer is a Life Member of The Polytechnic and knew his subject well through this connection. Studd was also involved and influential in religion, the masonry movement and in the City of London, where he was Lord Mayor 1928-9. An exemplary and fulfilled life, excellently told in this volume. [Book description copyright Carvid Books] Assessed as in very good condition overall, the book's red covers are just a little worn at extremities, end papers have a little foxing, internally else clean and sound.         Lyons Tea Rooms Coronation Designs

2 large sheets, each 61 x 41 inches. A little marginal tearing but with practically no loss. Barnett Freedman had previously worked with J. Lyons and Co., overseeing the production of the fine series of Lyons Lithographs in the 1940s. He was therefore a natural choice when the tea rooms needed a set of uniform designs for their windows to celebrate the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. Intended to be cut up and mounted in the windows as decorative bunting and colour displays these are obviously a rare survival.

1953. 1½ SS. 4to. TYPED LETTER, SIGNED, ADDRESSED TO EVA LE GALLIENNE, DATED 27 MARCH

1953. Good. EVA LE GALLIENNE Re: IBSEN ELIOT, T. S. TYPED LETTER, SIGNED, ADDRESSED TO EVA LE GALLIENNE, DATED 27 MARCH 1953. A single sheet, 9 1/4 x 7 1/4 inches, 32 typed lines on both sides of a self-folding 'Apsley' Air Letter form, custom printed with the Faber & Faber letterhead on one side of the sheet, and the closing lines and Eliot's signature on the top half of the reverse. Double matted and framed, 15 1/2 x 27 1/2 inches, on either side of a photo portrait of Eliot are a copy of the recto of the letter and the verso of the actual letter with Eliot's signature; thus making the full content of the letter readable. English-born American stage actress Eva Le Galliene (1899-1991) translated two Ibsen plays for Faber & Faber, HEDDA GABLER (1953) and THE MASTER BUILDER (1955) and provided a preface for each. Eliot's note is in reply to Miss Le Gallienne's, apparently after she had received a copy of HEDDA GABLER, "... We are delighted to know that you are pleased with the production of the book" and continues on sharing Faber's expectation for the translation, being confident "in its future lasting qualities." Eliot goes on to discuss the possibility of stage and film versions of THE MASTER BUILDER to be directed by George M. Hoellering (who had produced and directed the 1951 film adaptation of Eliot's play MURDER IN THE CATHEDRAL) and to star Oskar Homolka, both of which seem to have been unrealized. There is a paragraph regarding the American rights to Miss Le Gallienne's translation and the availability of the Faber edition in American markets. Eliot ends with a note of gratitude: "I have just received the gramophone records through Lady Margaret D'Arcy's kindness, and look forward eagerly to playing them at the house of some friend who has a long-playing gramophone." He closes "with all best wishes, yours sincerely" and signs T. S. Eliot. A letter with good content, nicely displayed.

Collection of 12 autograph letters dating from January 2008 to June 2009 discussing a number of the composer's own works including the Friday Evening Service, the Torah Service, O To Be a Dragon, 2 Psalms, etc., all to the award-winning American choral conductor Harold Rosenbaum

1953. A Canadian-born American composer, pianist and conductor, Wyner studied at Juilliard, at Yale with Hindemith, and at Harvard with Piston, among others. "After a period at the American Academy in Rome (1953-6), he was active as a performer and composer in New York. His teaching appointments have included positions at the Yale School of Music (from 1963), the Tanglewood Music Centre (1975-97), SUNY, Purchase (1978-89), where he also served as dean of music (1978-82), and Brandeis University (from 1989) as well as visiting professorships at Harvard (1991-7). Among his honours are two Guggenheim fellowships (1958-9, 1977-8), the Brandeis Creative Arts Award, the Elise Stoeger Prize of the Lincoln Centre Chamber Music Society, and commissions from the Ford Foundation and the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival. He was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1999.Wyner's early works, such as the Partita for piano, show a neo-classical influence; later, he moved towards freer forms, employing jazz rhythms and a more varied chromatic language. The Concert Duo for violin and piano reflects this widening stylistic range. Many compositions are influenced by his Jewish heritage and experience; one of the most important of these is the Friday Evening Service. Major compositions from the late 1970s onwards, such as Fragments from Antiquity and On this most Voluptuous Night, are highly expressive works for solo voice and instruments." Vivian Perlis in Grove Music Online. Many of the Wyner's works were performed by Rosenbaum's distinguished professional choir, The New York Virtuoso Singers.. The letters include discussion of revisions to various works, translations, rehearsals, suggestions for performance, financial matters, etc. With especially detailed commentary on the Torah Service: "A short prayer... is intended before the Sh'ma begins. Therefore it is not really attacca. This is a service intended for worship use, not as a normal Concert pierce... The Aliahs were written to provide a quiet procession for each person(s) ascending the Bimah... You can do as many as you wish, but the refrain should separate each one..." (letter of March 5, 2009) and corrections to the bar count in the score as "AMP was careless in not sending you updated scores..." (letter of March 23, 2009). The letters also include high praise for Rosenbaum's interpretation of the composer's works: "Thank you for your enthusiastic embrace of my music, for the mobilization of splendid singers, for your meticulous, comprehensive preparation of the music, for your scrupulous attention to even the smallest detail and for your unflagging concentration in projecting the overall work in performance."         An archive of letters from Kissinger, as Executive Director of the Harvard International Seminar, to Philip Rice, as Chairman, regarding the 1953 seminar. At this time, the CIA was using the program to launder funds via grants from "privately sponsored programs," and during the same period, Kissinger was covertly working with the FBI.

Cambridge, Massachusetts, 1953. Various. "An archive of 12 typed document letters, 8.5"" x 11"", and reports between Henry A. Kissinger and Philip Rice. Includes five signed letters from Kissinger. Dates range from February 26, 1953 to September 28, 1953, and include an overview and a report of the 1953 Harvard International Seminar.Kissinger, the director and chief fundraiser for the Harvard International Seminars, financed the program completely through grants from private foundations. The mandate for the seminars was to create a program that brought to Harvard rising stars in foreign policy and political, cultural, and literary life from Europe and Asia to school them in American foreign policy, and within certain bounds, to promote ""freedom of exchange,"" reaching beyond the existing exchange program.""The program of the International Seminar is based on the assumption that the real block in America's impact on the world is not displease with specific U.S. policies but a lack of confidence in America's moral stature""The general principles from the ""Report of The Harvard International Seminar"" (which is included in this archive) are as follow:""GENERAL PRINCIPLES --The Harvard International Seminar is designed for a group not reached by any existing exchange program…It is our belief that a meeting of the most promising representatives of this group in an atmosphere like that of Harvard, created by a privately sponsored program, would go far to promote a better appreciation of common problems and of America's deeper values.""Aside from the inherent success of the program, it also sought controversy as it was privately sponsored by outside grants and not by Harvard. By 1967, several of those foundations appeared on the Times' list of CIA conduits. One of them, the Friends of the Middle East, had funneled $243,000 to the Harvard International Seminar. Abigail Collins Fichter, Kissinger's administrative assistant in the 1960s, recalls in Ralph Blumenfeld's Henry Kissinger: The Private and Public Story, that Kissinger ""was running around saying, 'Oh, my God, this is terrible. People are going to say I'm working for the CIA."" Kissinger may not have fully comprehended his CIA connections because the agency often laundered its funds through a series of foundations to obscure their origins. But the disclosure in 1953 of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) document shows that Kissinger consciously sought and directly worked with the FBI while at Harvard. On July 10, the FBI recorded his name in its memo, identifying him simply as a ""teacher at Harvard University” … “called the FBI, reported he had information of interest to the bureau and asked that an agent call him back.” That afternoon an SAC (the FBI code word for Special Agent in Charge) interviewed Kissinger, who explained that he directed the International Seminar, which included persons from foreign countries who ""are highly placed economically and politically in their own nation.""         Herbst-Blumenstrauß in Vase.
