American Soldier in Korea March 1953 through May 1954. [our title]

Hardcover. Very Good. 225 photos of his time in Japan and Korea. Almost all have image sizes ranging between 8 x 11cm. to 10 x 12cm. and are mostly mounted 2-3 to a page on both sides of the black album leaves. At the end of the album are about 50 family photos (mostly of the soldier's wife). Most of the photos are mounted by cellophane tape which was neatly (and invisibly) affixed to the back of the photos; in a minority of cases the tapes had yellowed and fallen off and those photos have now been glued in. Almost all have neat typed captions mounted by the same processes (tape or glue) beneath each photo. Only a couple of photos and a few captions are missing (probably fell out when the tape lost its stickiness). The album also includes a couple of pieces of Korean currency, a few dried flowers and some other ephemera accumulated during his time in Korea. The album (30 x 23cm.) in decent physical shape with flexible covers and no loose pages. According to a one-page summary of our soldier's military career which is mounted on the first page, he was a draftee who was sent to Korea via Japan in March 1953. The album records shipboard initiation practices, his arrival in Yokohama and his brief stay at Camp Drake before being sent on to Pusan, Korea only six days later. Most of the album records his life in Korea (and a bit of R & R in Japan) during the next 13 months. There is a strong military emphasis to most of the pictures but our soldier, who had a decent eye as a photographer, also took some interesting photos of the local Korean population. This is one of the better Korean War albums we have seen. Our soldier was assigned to IX Corps Headquarters in the Medical Section so never saw combat but did rise to the rank of Corporal before being rejected for a Sargeant's stripes. According to brief online research, he studied engineering after completing his military obligation and had a successful career at a major corporation. Our lowly soldier and his wife made a seven figure bequest to their daughter's alma mater in their wills.

Love Among the Ruins. A Romance of the Near Future. With Decorations by Various Eminent Hands Including the Author's.

Chapman & Hall 1953 - Limited edition; 8vo; red buckram; top edge gilt others uncut. Number 30 of 50 copies for presentation from an edition limited to 350 copies. Inscribed by the author on the limitation page, "For Basil [Bennett] with warm regards from Evelyn." Colonel Basil Bennett (1894-1966) was a lifelong friend of Waugh's after they shared digs whilst stationed at Sherborne during the war. Bennett's father was the owner of the Hyde Park Hotel and when, after the war, Bennett became manager there, Waugh frequently brought his family to stay. The convenient central London location and the possibility of cheap alcohol at the hotel bar meant that both men continued a convivial friendship (with only the occasional rupture) for much of their lives. A touching testimony to their friendship can be found in a letter of Waugh's to Nancy Mitford in 1947: "The only Christmas presents I have received are the exquisite pen from you and some wine from Basil Bennett. I love you both. What a pity you & he never married." Very good a little spotting to the end papers and the spine is faded, preserved in custom made slip-case [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Bright Road (Collection of 8 original photographs from the 1953 film)

Beverly Hills, CA: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer [MGM], 1953. Collection of eight vintage still photographs from the 1953 film. Based on the Christopher Award winning story "See How They Run," written by Mary Elizabeth Vroman, and first published in 1951 in the Ladies' Home Journal. Featuring images of Dorothy Dandridge, Harry Belafonte, and various students. Notable for its nearly all-black cast, "Bright Road" stars Dorothy Dandridge as an Alabama schoolteacher intent on motivating one of her more lackluster students. Dandridge is said to have accepted the role because of the film's lack of racial tension as a central theme. As a result, she hoped that young women of all colors could identify with her character. Harry Belafonte's debut feature film. Set in Alabama. 8 x 10 inches (20.5 x 25.5 cm). Near Fine condition. Complete collation details available on request.

A major step forward for Bergman in terms of thematic use of light and shadow to not only provide atmosphere, but to evoke the feelings of the characters at hand.27.5 x 39 inches.         A letter from Albert Einstein to renown portrait painter, John Hansegger

Princeton, New Jersey, March 19, 1953. 8.5" x 11". "Single page TLS, 8.5"" x 11"". On embossed Princeton letterhead. Signed by Albert Einstein, as ""A. Einstein"", and dated ""den 19. Marz 1953"" Expected fold, else fine condition. Accompanied by the post marked envelope 6.5""x 3.5"" with the top torn off and a bit grubby.A short letter typed by Albert Einstein to his friend, John Hansegger, the reknown portrait painter having painted Picasso's portrait from a live sitting - a rare honor, with a brilliant result. Hansegger was then challenged by Picasso to invent his own style to which he then created the unprecedented Abstract Parallels series, a style he would continue to refine for the rest of his life. After he was invited to hold a one-man show at the Princeton University Museum in 1953, where he painted Albert Einstein from life, he elected to stay in America.Hansegger said that the sessions with Einstein were the most memorable of his career. Hansegger and Einstein conversed in their Swiss-Deutsch dialect. Hansegger remembered that Einstein told delicious Swiss Jokes and even played on the violin for him. Hansegger reported “Einstein loved classical music and said that Mozart’s music could be a proof of God and that perhaps by the next century science and religious belief might actually converge.”The letter translated in full reads:""Dear Mr. Hansegger:Thank you for the gorgeous blossoms [flowers]. If you would like to visit me as a harmless civilian, I would certainly be pleased. With warm greetings,Albert Einstein""Like his friend Pablo Picasso, Swiss-American painter John Konstantin Hansegger (1908 - 1989) was never content to limit his reach to the movement of the moment, continually adding new styles to his repertoire, several of them of his own invention. In his native Switzerland he was a child prodigy, influenced by Ferdinand Hodler and Albert Anker and garnering acclaim for his realistic landscapes and portraits. By 1932 he had found his way to the avant-garde scene in Paris, encouraged by Picasso, Leger and Mondrian as he mastered cubism and surrealism. In 1936 he painted his famous portrait of Pablo Picasso from a live sitting - a rare honor, with a brilliant result. Then, challenged by Picasso to invent his own style, Hansegger created the unprecedented Abstract Parallels series, a style he would continue to refine for the rest of his life. After the war he exhibited in the rigorous avant-garde Galerie Nierendorf Gallery in New York, along with Klee and Kandinsky, before embarking on extensive travels to Israel, Ecuador (where he originated his “Family of Man” series), South Africa and Japan. After he was invited to hold a one-man show at the Princeton University Museum in 1953, where he painted Albert Einstein from life, he elected to stay in America. In time he settled in Columbia County, New York, where he continued to paint, show and innovate until his death in 1989, a few months after being honored with a major retrospective at the Kunst Museum in his home city of St. Gallen, Switzerland. An image of the famous completed sitting portrait by Hansegger is shown below."

        Structure of DNA

1953 - WATSON, J[ames] D.; CRICK, F[rancis] H.C. The Structure of DNA. IN: Cold Spring Harbor Symposia on Quantitative Biology. Volume XVIII, pp. 123-131. Cold Spring Harbor, L.I., New York: Biological Laboratory, 1953. Tall quarto, contemporary full burgundy cloth. $3200.First edition of Volume XVIII of the Cold Spring Harbor Symposia containing the first publication of Crick and Watson's paper, The Structure of DNA, delivered June 1953 in what Watson later described as the "unveiling the double helix," in which they "describe a structure for DNA which". allows us to propose, for the first time, a detailed hypothesis on the atomic level for the reproduction of genetic material." Preceded only by the same year's articles in Nature containing only "a preliminary account of some of these data."This very scarce volume contains the first publication of Watson and Crick's revolutionary paper, The Structure of DNA (123-131), delivered at the June 1953 Cold Harbor Symposium on Viruses. In their opening paragraph Watson and Crick write: "In this paper we shall describe a structure for DNA which". allows us to propose, for the first time, a detailed hypothesis on the atomic level for the self-reproduction of genetic material." This Volume was issued "as soon as possible after the Symposium meeting. As part of this effort, the printer's proofs of all articles in this volume were handled in our editorial office, and no proofs were sent to the authors." In addition, as Watson and Crick note in their paper, only a "preliminary account" with some of the data in this paper appearing in "A structure for desoxyribose nucleic acids (Nature 171:737-738) and "Genetical implications of the structure of desoxyribose nucleic acid" (Nature 167:759-760). Watson later recalled the experience of "unveiling the double helix: [in] my lecture at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, June 1953" by noting: "I was offered, at the last minute, an invitation to speak. To this intellectually high-powered meeting I brought a three-dimensional model built in the Cavendish [Laboratory]". In the audience was Seymour Benzer". He immediately understood what our breakthrough meant for his studies of mutations in viruses". The response of the Hungarian physicist Leo Szilard to my Cold Spring Harbor talk on the double helix was less academic. His question was, 'Can you patent it?'". But then as now patents were given only for useful inventions and at the time no once could conceive of a practical use for DNA." To Watson, their "discovery put an end to a debate as old as the human species: Does life have some magical mystical essence?". Is there something divine at the heart of a cell that brings it to life? The double helix answered that question with a definitive No". Contained in the molecule's graceful curves was the key to molecular biology, a new science whose progress over the subsequent 50 years has been astounding" (Watson and Berry, DNA, 57-58, xii-xiii).Crick and Watson "were for 20th-century biology what Darwin and his circle were for the 19th". both received accolades for their pioneering work, culminating in the Nobel prize for physiology or medicine in 1962, awarded jointly to Crick, Watson and Maurice Wilkins" (ODNB). Watson was later named head of the Human Genome Project at NIH before becoming director and president of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, and Crick, who became part of the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, pursued research on the relationship between DNA and proteins. Contains diagrams by Odile Crick, and images of the x-ray photographs of the A and B structures of DNA respectively made by Maurice Wilkins, and Rosalind Franklin and Raymond Gosling. Accompanied by two documents of provenance. The first is a laid-in one-page July 11, 2005 unsigned typed letter from Dr. Kevin J. Fraser to Dr. Laurence E. Crofutt. Dr. Fraser, a previous owner of this volume, is writing Dr. Crofutt, the earlier owner (whose owner inkstamps appear herein). Dr. Fraser write [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

New York: Published by Simon and Schuster, 1953., 1953. First edition. First edition. Author's first book. Signed by the author on the front fly leaf, "Best wishes, Ira Levin." Pages uniformly browned throughout else a fine copy in a lightly soiled and lightly rubbed dust jacket with minor restoration to the spine ends and corners. Levin's finest book and written as three books in one: part one is told from the vantage point of the murderer, who wants to marry into a wealthy family, but cannot because the girl becomes pregnant and refuses to have an abortion. This will cost him his chance at the family fortune, so in an ingenious manner, which the reader can follow step by step, he murders her and her death is ruled a suicide. In part two the sister of the murdered girl deducts that the apparent suicide was really murder, so she tracks down the killer. She's got the right person, but for the wrong reasons and she becomes the second victim. In part three, a third sister and her husband bring the killer to a sort of justice.         Take a Giant Step (Two original oversize photographs from the premiere of the 1953 play)

John Erwin, N.p. 1953 - Two vintage oversize double weight photographs from the premiere of the 1953 play. Both photos feature a very young Louis Gossett (who later changed his stage name to Louis Gossett, Jr.), and one features African American actress and singer Maxine Sullivan. Both photos credit photographer John Erwin and the Lyceum Theatre in New York, as well as producers Thomas Noyes and Lyn Austin. One photo has its credits etched on the white margin at the bottom (from the negative), the other with more formal printed credits. The first play on Broadway to have been written by an African American playwright. Louis Peterson made his breakthrough with the play, about the challenges of a black youth growing up in a white neighborhood. Louis Gossett, in the lead role, was still in high school at the time. Frederick O'Neal, co-founder of the American Negro Theatre, also starred in the play. It was adapted to the screen by Peterson in 1959.The play ran for eight weeks at the Lyceum Theatre, and was revived in 1954 Off-Broadway for another 246 performances. In 1991, "Jump Cut" magazine reassessed the play (and subsequent screenplay), calling it a pioneering work.11 x 14 inches. Near Fine. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

        Annual Automobile Review

Edita, Lausanne - 8 volumes, various paginations. The first 8 issues. Issue no 1 (1953 - 1954) is in fact in paperback format, which the publishers clearly dispensed with for subsequent issues. Issues 2 and 3 are in slightly rubbed cloth hardbacks without jackets, issue 4 is published in illustrated boards, with a small split to head of spine. 5-8 are in dust jackets which are in some cases rubbed with some tearing and creasing. Issue 1 has a small chip to the laminate on its cover, and a touch of bubbling to the laminate on the rear cover. Scarcely seen run of this famous periodical. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
