Le Paradis à l'ombre des épées, première olympique. Lithographies de Mac Avoy

Paris: Soci? des Amis du livre moderne, 1952. Paris: Société des Amis du livre moderne, 1952. Livre. Illus. by Edouard Mac Avoy. Très bon. En Feuilles. In-4. (MONOD, 8393).

Escola tecnica do exercito computadores electronicos digitais. Presentation inscription to Alwin Walther.

Rio de Janeiro 1952 - Schreyer, Helmut T. (1912-84) Escola tecnica do exercito computadores eletrunicos digitais. Rio de Janeiro: n.p., 1952 (appendix dated 1953). Reproduced typescript. Modern black cloth, original printed front wrapper preserved. [18, irregularly numbered], 368pp., [9]ff. 6 folding plates. Text diagrams. 211 x 153 mm. Provenance: Alwin Walther (1898-1967) with Schreyer's autograph presentation to Walther on flyleaf. Rubber stamp of the Institut fur Praktische Mathematik, Technische Hochschule, Darmstadt. Schreyer and Walther had known one another since the early 1940s. During the war Schreyer worked for Walther's department helping to design the inertial guidance system for Wernher von Braun's V-2 rocket project at Peenemunde. First edition. Schreyer was a friend of Konrad Zuse from college days, and from about 1934 collaborated with Zuse on his Z2, and possibly his Z3 and Z4 computers. From Schreyer's experience as a film projectionist he understood the durability of movie film, and he suggested the use of punched holes in discarded movie film as a data-input device. At least one device of this type was built at Alwin Walther's Institut fur Praktische Mathematik at the Technische Hochschule in Darmstadt. In 1941 Schreyer received a doctorate in telecommunications engineering with a thesis on the use of vacuum-tube relays in electronic circuits. Between 1941 and 1943, with modest financial support from the German Center for Aviation Research, he converted some logical designs created by Zuse into electronic circuits, building a small prototype electronic computer that achieved a switching frequency of about 10,000 Hz. This was damaged in an air raid on November 11, 1943, and later lost in the war. During the same time Schreyer helped build an accelerometer for the V-2 rocket at Peenemunde and a converter from radar analog signals to acoustic signals for figher planes. Because he could not find regular work in Germany after the war either in telecommunications or computers, Schreyer emigrated to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1949, where he became director of the laboratory of the Brazilian post office and a professor at the army technical college. Schreyer's experimental work on electronic digital computing is known from manuscript documents that he wrote during the war. When he emigrated to Brazil, he left these historic documents in the safekeeping of Konrad Zuse (Schreyer 1990).Schreyer's Escola tecnica do exercito computadores eletrunicos digitais is most probably the earliest book on electronic digital computers published in Latin America. The English-language preface states that the book "had its origin in an advanced course on 'Electronic Digital Computers' held at the Escola Tecnica do Exercito in Rio de Janeiro." Exactly why there may have been a need for this course at this time is unclear, since we have not been able to locate any records of the delivery of electronic digital computers to Brazil at this date. The work, which was crudely reproduced from typescript, was probably issued in very few copies; when we last checked there were no copies cited in OCLC. Origins of Cyberspace 876. A flawless copy in binder's leather edged slipcase.Signed and dated Nov. 1958 by the author, with a tipped in ALs by the artist, an inscription by French novelist and playwright Georges Duhamel dated Septembre 1958, and a TLs by the owner, Jean Francesche (with his blindstamped signed ex libris on inside front cover turn in).The eighth volume in Librairie Galimard's illustrated collection, Le Rayon d'or, a reissue of Romain's celebrated novel of 1913.Renowned artist Gus Bofa (b. Gustave Blanchot 1883-1968) was an illustrator for Rire and Sourire, a costume and set designer, a celebrated poster artist, and illustrator for the literary journal, Crapouillot. He soon became one of the most in demand illustrators of editions of Swift, La Fontaine, Cervantes, etc., ultimately with one hundred and seventeen volumes to his credit. (Ref. novelist, poet, dramatist, and essayist Jules Romains (pseud. of Louis Farigoule 1885-1972) was, "early in his career…associated with a short-lived artistic community, the Groupe de 'Abbaye, which published his poems, La Vie unanime, in 1908. These poems wnad much of his later verse and prose, were influence by Unanimist theories of social groups and collective psychology. Before the war in 1914 he published more collections of poetry, a verse play…and two novels, Mort de quelqu'un (1911) and the farcial Les Copains [The Pals]" (New Oxford Companion to Literature in French, p. 707).Georges Duhamel's (1884–1966) experience as a surgeon during World War I produced Vie des martyrs (1917, tr. The New Book of Martyrs, 1918) and Civilisation (1918, tr. 1919). These collections of sketches are noted for their compassionate accounts of human suffering. He was successful as a dramatist; his Dans l'ombre des statues was performed in 1912 (tr. In the Shadow of Statues, 1914) and L'oeuvre des athlètes in 1920. His fiction includes two cycles of novels—Cycle de Salavin (1920–32, tr. 1936), about a sensitive eccentric, and Chronique des Pasquiers (1933–45, tr. 1937–46), about a bourgeois Parisian family. Essays in Scènes de la vie future (1930, tr. America: the Menace, 1931) and other collections reflect Duhamel's aversion to overindustrialization" (Columbia Enclyclopedia). He wrote passionately against war and its atrocities , and against the rise of Naziism. He was elected to the Académie Français in 1935. Though now largely forgotten, he is perhaps best remembered for his timeless epigram: "It is always brave to say what everyone thinks"The TLs by owner Jean Francesche reads: "The owner of this copy had read a book by Jules Romains, edited in 1958 by the Fayard Publishing House. It was the fourth book from the collection 'The Forty: MEMORIES AND SECRETS OF A WRITER.' "Page 128: 'In THE PALS, what part of the book is autobiographical and contains actual events?' "Page 129: 'It is not impossible to find a resemblance between the cheeks and glasses of Huchon with those of Duhamel, just as it is not impossible to find a certain pretentiousness in the future author of DESERT OF BIEVRES when Huchon prepares the veal stew as no one else can (to be more precise it was more like something between a stew and a roast)' "This revelation has led me to question the author’s childhood friend on this detail, and Georges Duhamel, who like the author, has been made a member of the French Academy, was kind enough to write his answer on the half-title of this edition, which is illustrated by Gus Bofa. "I was also intrigued by the drawing where the artist had brought together 'THE PALS' and in which , I told him, it appeared that one of the characters had lost his head, or at least his cranium. "I asked him to please complete the drawing with a skillful stroke of his pencil. "He returned the drawing to me with an inscription as well as a curious letter which follows:. "I think that all of this adds to the interest of this charming volume [signed] Jean Franceche"Bofa's ALs response reads:Mr. Avec mes deux mains bien sympatiques, [signature] Gus Bofa[Mr. N.D. des Champs Monday November, 24, ‘88Dear Sir,Your letter stirs up a question of conscience! Your “pal without a face” has not lost his head - he never had one – Jules Romain wanted it like this, and at the same time he got a lot of tenderness into the process of drawing the other friends. Far from wanting to add the stroke of pencil to this man that you have asked me to, I regret that I cannot give him the supposed bit of chin, mouth and head, not being authorized to do so in this context. "With my two sympathetic hands, [signature] Gus Bofa]Duhamel's inscription reads:LES COPAINSJe n’ai aucune qualité pour poser ma signature sur le livre d’un ami de ma jeunesse; mais je dois dire que ma spécialité culinaire était alors le ragoût de moutons, & non le ragoût de veau. -[signature] G Duhamel Septembre 1958[THE PALSI have no authority to put my signature on the book of my childhood friend; but I must say that my culinary specialty was lamb stew, not veal stew. -[signature] G.         [Typed Letter, Signed, to Charles Maurras]

London. 24 August 1952.. London. 24 August 1952.. One page, quarto. On 24 Russell Street letterhead. In French. Old folds from mailing, else very good. A warm letter, in French, to an elder colleague of many years, the French poet, critic and political theorist, Charles Maurras (1868 - 1952), written three months before the recipient's death. Addressed to "Cher monsieur et maître ...," Eliot thanks him for the copy of LA BALANCE INTÉRIEURE, then recently published, and (roughly translated) comments that "I was first of all very touched that you would have thought of me after so many years. I read certain of those poems with a delight that I experience only rarely with those poets called 'modern'; noting there above all the perfect accord between intelligence and feeling: a harmony that I appreciate to the highest degree in a world that is tending to lose at the same time both the spirit of order and the spirit of refinement ...." Signed in ink, and with the original typed envelope, bearing a forwarding address in an unknown hand to Maurras at the Clinique St. Gregoire. In March, due to his failing health, Maurras had been released from prison, where he had been sentenced to life on the basis of certain activities during the war. He entered a hospital, and then was transferred to the clinic in Tours where this letter was forwarded. Eliot translated one of Maurras's critical essays for THE CRITERION in 1928, and the following year dedicated DANTE to him.

New York: Scribner, 1952.. New York: Scribner, 1952.. Cloth. Small spot on upper board, some offsetting to endsheets and soiling to fore- edge; a frequently read, but solid, copy in imperfect and worn dust jacket. First edition of the author's first book (one of 2500 copies printed), a work regarded as one of the opening salvos in the literature of the Beats. Inscribed by Holmes in an early hand: "With all my best - John" (a pencil date in another hand follows, "Oct. 1953"). Further signed and dated by Allen Ginsberg in March 1976, with reference to p. 36, where the paragraph containing Pasternak's observation "'You know, everyone I know is kind of furtive, kind of beat'" has a marginal highlight. Pasternak is regarded as the fictional analogue for Kerouac. The recipient to whom the inscription was directed is unknown, but this copy resided among the copies of his books kept by his second wife, Shirley, who he married in September 1953. Formerly a moderately uncommon book; now, only uncommon with an early inscription.

Original large portrait of the composer in oil ("Hindemith with Viola") on board executed by Rudolf W. Heinisch in Expressionistic style and signed by the artist with his initials, "WHR."

. Undated, but 1952. Approximately 810 x 990 mm. + frame. The painting depicts Hindemith in half-length in concert dress performing on a viola. The subject is portrayed with a forceful intensity, with the suggestion of the beginning of a musical stave to the forehead continuing beyond the portrait and with musical notation on multiple staves swirling in the background with diagonal lines crossing the painting parallel to the subject's bow mirroring the dynamics of bow movement.. Rudolf W. Heinisch (1896-1956) was a painter, graphic artist and stage designer whose style has been variously described as belonging to Expressionism, Expressive Realism and the "New Objectivity" school. He and Hindemith were life-long friends; Heinisch was a witness at Hindemith's marriage, and both moved from Frankfurt to Berlin in the early 1930s. Heinisch executed another portrait of Hindemith in 1931 which was exhibited at the Staedelsche Museum in Frankfurt/Main; this portrait was subsequently declared "degenerate" and destroyed by the Nazis. Some of Heinisch's oil paintings and watercolours were also included in the infamous exhibition of "Entartete Kunst" mounted by the Nazis in Munich in 1937 along with works by many important artists. Heinisch also illustrated the first edition of Hindemith's children's opera, Wir bauen eine Stadt, published in 1930. Other portraits of Hindemith by Heinisch are held at the Senatsabteilung für Kunst und Wissenschaft in Berlin, the Hochschule für Musik in Frankfurt, the offices of Schott Verlag in Mainz, and in the Hindemith House Museum in Blonay, Switzerland. "When my father made the present viola painting I was seven years old, but I remember this very well because it was a great event when Hindemith came to Berlin. I went with my father to the orchestra rehearsal, where he made a lot of preparatory sketches for the oil painting." Correspondence to us from the artist's son, Mr. Philipp Heinisch. The creative output of both Hindemith and Heinisch were ultimately banned by the Nazis and, while Hindemith emigrated from Berlin in 1938, Heinisch remained there. After the war, Heinisch became one of the "Lost Generation" of artists and failed to gain any degree of recognition during his lifetime. There has, however, been renewed interest in Heinisch in more recent times. A major exhibition of his works took place at the Frankfurter Kunstverein in 1977. His work is also included in the well-known collection of Dr. Gerhard Schneider of "degenerate" art dating from the period of German National Socialism; an exhibition of art works from this collection entitled "Kunst und Künstler im Nationalsozialismus Werke aus der Sammlung Gerhard Schneider" was also held at the Stadtmuseum in Berlin in early 2013.

Theatro Americano, descripción general de los reinos y provincias de la Nueva España y sus jurisdicciones

Mexico City: Editora Nacional, 1952. Description:2 volumes. Royal octavo (9 1/4" x 6 3/4") bound in facsimile velum with title printed in red and black on covers and horizontally ink lettered. Introduction by Francisco Gonzalez de Cossio. From the library of George M Foster. Second edition limited to 500 copies of which this is number 13.José Antonio Villaseñor y Sánchez was an 18th-century geographer, historian, and mathematician in New Spain. He was born in San Luis Potosí, México and studied at San Ildefonso in Mexico City. He became an accountant, and later official cosmographer (geographer) of New Spain. By order of Philip V, the viceroy of New Spain, Conde de Fuenclara, was commanded in 1740 to have a report prepared on the true condition of the provinces of his jurisdiction. He commissioned José Antonio Villaseñor y Sánchez to prepare the report. Villaseñor occupied a number of important posts: official mayor of the Contaduria de Reales Tributos, contador general de la azogues, and cosmographer of New Spain. He wrote a number of works of mathematical and astronomical interest. The outcome of this commission by Fuenclara was the Theatro Americano, descripción general de los reinos y provincias de la Nueva España y sus jurisdicciones. It appered in two volume in 1746 and 1748. The first volume contains introductory chapters on pre-Spanish and Spanish history of Mexico, followed by a jurisdiction-by jurisdiction description of the archdiocese of Mexico and diocese of Puebla. The second volume continues the description for the diocese of Puebla. The second volume continues the description for the diocese of Michoacán, Oaxaca, Guadalajara and Durango. The work comprehends a great mass of data regarding the ethnology and population of the Mexican provinces in the mid-18th century. Handbook of Middle American Indians.George McClelland Foster, Jr born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, on October 9, 1913, died on May 18, 2006, at his home in the hills above the campus of the University of California, Berkeley, where he served as a professor from 1953 to his retirement in 1979, when he became professor emeritus. His contributions to anthropological theory and practice still challenge us; in more than 300 publications, his writings encompass a wide diversity of topics, including acculturation, long-term fieldwork, peasant economies, pottery making, public health, social structure, symbolic systems, technological change, theories of illness and wellness, humoral medicine in Latin America, and worldview. The quantity, quality, and long-term value of his scholarly work led to his election to the National Academy of Sciences in 1976. Virtually all of his major publications have been reprinted and/or translated. Provenance from the executor of Foster's library laid in.Condition:Foster's stamp to front limited page, some wear to edges, small linear tear at spine head of volume 2 else a very good copy.

        Joyce the Artificer

[London:] Issued for Private Circulation, printed by the Chiswick Press, 1952. [London:] Issued for Private Circulation, printed by the Chiswick Press,, 1952. Two Studies of Joyce's method; with five Collotype reproductions from the Proofs of "Ulysses" and "Tales of Shem and Shaun", together with a letter and notes thereon by J. Schwartz. Quarto. Original light green paper wrappers printed in black, single quire of 10 leaves bound with thread. With 5 full-page collotype facsimiles of Joyce's corrected proofs and an autograph letter to the printer of a section of Work in Progress. Small pencil correction to p. [8] ("conscience" instead of "conscious") Edges of wrappers faintly faded, tiny closed tear to fore edge of front wrapper. An excellent copy. Limited edition, number 87 of 90 copies. "James Joyce was a man of afterthoughts. His inspirations, as we can see from these much-corrected proofs of Ulysses, were successive. The first was a key, as it were, to a second, and the second to a third. His discovery of what he wished to say was like the conquest of Mexico. It began with the islands, touched the mainland, climbed to an astounding vision of pyramids and feathered warriors, and ended in the triumphant capture of Tenochtitlan. Shakespeare would have landed on the roof of Montezuma's palace by helicopter. Joyce had to take the longer, harder road. However, he got there in the end. And that, after all, is the only thing that matters" (Aldous Huxley).

        Zorba The Greek

London: John Lehman, 1952.. London: John Lehman, 1952. First edition in English, preceding the American edition by one year. Octavo, original cloth. Signed by Nikos Kazantzakis. From the library of Odysseas Elytis, the recipient of the Nobel Prize in literature in 1979. Fine in a fine dust jacket. Translated by Carl Wildman. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. Trade editions signed by Kazantzakis are exceptionally rare. Zorba the Greek is the epic tale of a young Greek intellectual who ventures to escape his bookish life with the aid of the boisterous and mysterious Alexis Zorba. Kazantzakis has made a work of stunning genius. The book is about life. How does one live it? How does one deal with the vicissitudes of it? The tragedies? The failures? Does one stand on the sidelines of life and never jump in? Does one fear getting married or fear having children or fear doing any activity that could fail or come to naught? Zorba tells us what to do. And in the end, when the whole bloody mess comes falling down around us, and all our plans and schemes are for naught, what do you do? Dance. Dance as hard and as wild as you can. Spit and fume and sing and smash your heels into the dirt. And laugh at it all. the absurdity of worry and wondering. Zorba shows us the joy of just "being" and "doing." The novel was adapted into a successful 1964 film of the same name as well as a 1968 musical, Zorba.

Typed Letter, Signed, to Charles Maurras].

London. 24 August 1952. - One page, quarto. On 24 Russell Street letterhead. In French. Old folds from mailing, else very good. A warm letter, in French, to an elder colleague of many years, the French poet, critic and political theorist, Charles Maurras (1868 - 1952), written three months before the recipient's death. Addressed to "Cher monsieur et maître .," Eliot thanks him for the copy of LA BALANCE INTÉRIEURE, then recently published, and (roughly translated) comments that "I was first of all very touched that you would have thought of me after so many years. I read certain of those poems with a delight that I experience only rarely with those poets called 'modern'; noting there above all the perfect accord between intelligence and feeling: a harmony that I appreciate to the highest degree in a world that is tending to lose at the same time both the spirit of order and the spirit of refinement ." Signed in ink, and with the original typed envelope, bearing a forwarding address in an unknown hand to Maurras at the Clinique St.

Signed* Black Reconstruction: An essay towards a history of the part which black folk played in the attempt to reconstruct democracy in America, 1860-1880

Albert Saifer 1952 - This copy is *AUTOGRAPHED/SIGNED* by W. E. B. Du Bois on the fly, not quite inscribed. A Poor, nay Bad copy -- but with an authentic autograph of the famed American sociologist, historian, civil rights activist, and co-founder of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Although it gives the appearance of being inscribed to John Wilson, "W. E B Du Bois / Nov 24, 1954 / for / -''- / John Wilson / --''--" The former owner John Wilson had previously signed his name on the fly (of all his books). When he met and got W.E.B. Du Bois to autograph this copy Du Bois signed _around_ the previous John Wilson signature. Even had this been unknown, it is obvious from differing handwriting. The fly page with the autograph is quite sharp and only slightly age toned with little wear. You could remove it and it would frame up quite nicely - if that is your desire. The book itself is a mess. The front hinge (the inside portion of the flexible fold where book cover meets the book spine) is firm, but the rear hinge is split & the joints (the exterior flexible fold where book cover meets book spine) are split. The cover has been taped, poorly, with scotch tape and black _duct tape_. There are some pencil underlinings and marks to the text. There is rub-through to the corners. There is a waterstain to the top spine and covers, although it does not affect the signed page. Reprint of the 1935 Harcourt, Brace & Co hardcover. 746 pages. * * * * * {Any images shown next to the listing that have our 'aCastleofBooks' watermark on them are the exact item you will receive, all other images are for reference only.
