        The Great Gatsby

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1952. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1952 First edition, first printing. Bound in the publisher's dark blue-green cloth, front board lettering stamped in blind, spine lettering stamped in gilt. A very good or better copy, with a faint hint of wear to the extremities, spine gilt just a bit dulled, light foxing to the half-title and title pages, very minor foxing to the page edges, otherwise bright and clean interior. Overall, a bright and sturdy copy. Bruccoli A 11. While it has since been regarded as masterful piece of classic literature, The Great Gatsby did not gain popularity until after the author's death in 1940. The novel tells the story of the star-crossed lovers Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan against the backdrop of wealthy and materialistic West Egg, Long Island, during the Prohibition Era. Although Fitzgerald meant the text to be critical of the 1920's social climate, today The Great Gatsby is beloved for its vivid descriptions of extravagant parties, palatial homes, and eccentric characters that are emblematic of the Jazz Age. The text remains extremely popular today and is widely taught in schools across the United States. The first edition was printed in a run of 20,870 copies; today, Scribner's sells almost 25 times as many copies per year as printed books and e-books.. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good.

        CHARLOTTE'S WEB

Harper , 1952. Harper , 1952. First edition. Original publisher's pictorial cloth in (supplied) dustwrapper. Author's presentation copy, inscribed to friend and fellow novelist, Elizabeth Taylor on the front end paper, "For Elizabeth Taylor / and I do like Irish whiskey / E B White". A very good copy, with some toning to the spine and a little wear to the spine ends and slight looseness to the initial pages. The dustwrapper is near fine, clean and bright with trivial wear and a thin chip to one corner. Colour dustwrapper by Garth Williams and numerous line drawings in the text also by Williams. Elizabeth Taylor, the critically regarded British novelist, described by Kingsley Amis as "One of the best English novelists born this century", whose writing career was forced into relative obscurity as a consequence of coinciding with the rise of her more famous namesake, the American actress. Her style was in the mould of Ivy Compton-Burnett, Barbara Pym and Elizabeth Bowen, and has only recently been recognised as one of the important authors of the twentieth century. She wrote twelve novels and many short stories, most of which were originally published in, The New Yorker, where E.B.White's wife, Katherine, was her first editor. Taylor rarely travelled to American so did not often meet White, but they became good friends via a long and frequent correspondence. Charlotte's Web was one of Taylor's favourite books and was a story she read aloud to her grandchildren. E.B. White was known to be a great fan of whiskey, often having a bottle to hand to offer guests and storing all his manuscripts in old whiskey boxes. Presentation copies of Charlotte's Web of significant literary association are genuinely rare.

Reaction organique a L'agression et choc.

Paris, Masson et cie., 1952.. 205 pages. Original softcover in protective Mylar. Signed and inscribed by Laborit. Very good in green printed wraps, with a crease to the front panel and a small loss to the foot of the spine. First edition of Laborit's third book, with an inscription in his somewhat illegible hand addressed to "Monsieur le professeur." Laborit was a French physician, writer, and philosopher who eventually became a research department head at Boucicault. He was the first to study GHB, and also did pioneering research into dopamine antagonists as treatment for shock and as antipsychotics. Laborit also appeared in Resnais' 'Mon oncle d'amerique,' which draws heavily on his ideas.. Henri Laborit (November 21, 1914 - May 18, 1995) was a French physician, writer and philosopher. Laborit was born in Hanoi, French Indochina and started his career as a neurosurgeon in the Marines and then moved on to fundamental research. He won the prestigious Albert Lasker Award for Clinical Medical Research in 1957. Laborit later became a research head at Boucicault Hospital in Paris. His interests included psychotropic drugs, eutonology, and memory. He pioneered the use of dopamine antagonists to reduce shock in injured soldiers. His observation that people treated with these drugs showed reduced interest in their surroundings led to their later use as antipsychotics. He was also the first researcher to study GHB, in the early 1960s. He hoped that it would be an orally bioavailable precursor to the neurotransmitter GABA, but it proved to have other uses and was later discovered as an endogenous neurotransmitter. He appeared in the 1980 Alain Resnais film Mon oncle d'Amerique, which is built around the ideas of Laborit and uses the stories of three people to illustrate theories deriving from evolutionary psychology regarding the relationship of self and society. This movie includes short sequences of rat experiments that are used to illustrate the behaviors of some of the characters in different situations (such as inhibition in the action). The French-born American market researcher Clotaire Rapaille considered Laborit to be an important influence in his work. The 1991 Italian film Mediterraneo begins with a quote from Laborit which, translated, means "In times like these, escape is the only way to stay alive and keep dreaming." (Wikipedia)

        Presidential Telegram

Washington: , 1952. Washington, 1952. unbound. Exceedingly rare and important original Presidential Western Union telegram. 2 pages, 5.75 x 8 inches, The White House, Washington D.C., November 20, 1952. Written to the Honorable Owen J. Roberts, President of the Atlantic Union Committee, sending greetings on the occasion of the AUC's second annual Congress and acknowledging the organization's role in making NATO a success. In part: "...Your organization has performed a notable service to this country and to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization by promoting a broader understanding of the need for continued cooperation among the peoples of the Atlantic community. While Americans may sometimes disagree as to the particular methods by which peace and security can be insured, there can be no doubt that an ever increasing public understanding of the problems we face in our relations with other parts of the world is essential to the ultimate attainment of these goals: HARRY S. TRUMAN." Some creasing and browning; very good(-) condition. In 1949, the Association to Unite Democracies spawned the Atlantic Union Committee, with former Supreme Court Justice Owen J. Roberts as Chairman, former Under-secretary of State Will Clayton, and former Secretary of War Robert Patterson as Vice-Chairman, in an intensive nationwide campaign for Atlantic integration. This was the climate in which NATO was proposed, the stage already being set by the Marshall Plan of which Clayton was the principle author. In the period from 1949 to 1953, the Atlantic Union Committee (AUC) became the primary organization in America supporting NATO. In 1952, the AUC took the initiative to form an Atlantic Assembly, as an annual "consultative" assembly of Parliamentarians from NATO countries. When President Truman sent this telegram to Owen J. Roberts he was ecstatic. It was Roberts' idea to give countries like Greece and Turkey large expenditures and help them re-build their economies. This tactic prevented Greece and Turkey from turning to Communism and opened the door for them to be formerly accepted as members of NATO at the very function Truman was sending his greetings.
