        Shiloh.

New York: Dial Press, 1952. First edition. Octavo, original half cloth. Inscribed by the author on the title page to fellow writer James Jones in the year of publication, "To my friend James Jones: Shelby Foote Greenville, Mississippi 15 April 1952." In Shelby Foote: A Writer's Life by Stuart Chapman, James Jones's visit is mentioned: "He set out to write the article but was interrupted by James Jones, the author of From Here to Eternity, who stopped over in Greenville with 'a milelong aluminum trailer and with three blackclad motorcyclists for outriders, like a Nazi general.' After surviving a hangover that saddled him for several days afterwards, Foote sat down to hammer out the article." An outstanding association copy, linking two important writers of war literature. Stamp commemorating the 90th Anniversary of the Battle of Shiloh on the half title page. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket with light wear. The book owes much to William Faulkner in the slow, elegant cadence of its storytelling. Its narrative also resembles Stephen Crane's "The Red Badge of Courage"; a similarity reinforced by the fact that Foote wrote an introduction to an edition of Crane's work some forty years later.

        East of Eden

New York: The Viking Pres, 1952 First edition, first printing. Publisher's light green cloth; original pictorial dust jacket. About near fine, with some light wear and toning to the extremities, spine cracked at the title page, otherwise fresh interior; unclipped dust jacket, with some light rubbing to the extremities, else bright and clean. Overall, a tight copy. East of Eden features the intertwining stories of the Hamilton and Trask families. The former is based on Steinbeck's own genealogical lineage, while the latter is a representation of the Biblical Adam and his descendants. Considered by the author to be his masterpiece work, East of Eden is a culmination of the major themes and strengths of Steinbeck's other novels: an affinity for nature, the pervasive struggle between good and evil, familial relationships, and American history. During the writing process, Steinbeck chronicled the development of this novel with letters to his friend and former publisher Pascal Covici, the contents of which were published a year after Steinbeck's death as Journal of a Novel: The East of Eden Letters. A lengthy yet popular tale originally intended by the author to teach his sons about the Salinas Valley in California, East of Eden has been adapted into a film, a musical, and a television miniseries.. 1st Edition.. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Dust Jacket Included.

A document signed three times by Marilyn Monroe for her 1952 appearance with the equally beloved Charlie McCarthy and Edgar Bergen! A rider in the original contract was specifically aimed at keeping the sexually charged starlet in check, and preventing her from doing anything that might "insult or offend the community or public morals or decency."

[Los Angeles, CA], [October 1952]. 8.5" x 11". "Endorsement Signed, ""MM"" (thrice), on a Typed Document, 1 page, 8.5"" x 11"", [Los Angeles, October 7, 1952], countersigned ""EB"" (thrice, each below Monroe's), being a portion of a contract concerning Monroe's radio appearance on The Charlie McCarthy Show, recorded on October 18, 1952, accompanied by color copies of the entire original contract, included for reference. File holes at top, minor staple holes at top left, usual folds, else fine condition. The original contract underscored Monroe's rapid rise to stardom in 1952 as she assumed more substantial film roles. In April 1952 she appeared on the cover of Life, who billed her as ""The Talk of Hollywood."" Briefly on loan to RKO, she appeared in Clash by Night with Barbara Stanwyick, which was released in June 1952. The following month, two films featuring Monroe appeared including We're not Married! and Clash by Night. In September 1952, Fox released Monkey Business, in which she appeared with Cary Grant and Ginger Rogers. It was in that film that Monroe appeared with her signature platinum-blond hair. The heavily-edited original contract, required that Monroe and Bergen initial all of the changes. Revisions were required to note that the program was recorded as opposed to live. Monroe also had to agree to mention the show's sponsor, which in this case was changed from Coca-Cola to ""Richard Hudnut Products"". In a testament to her growing influence, an entire provision making her liable for breaches of contract was crossed out. Monroe also insisted on a rider prohibiting the use of her likeness or name in connection with a product for the purpose of an endorsement. Another rider, attached to page four of the original, addresses Monroe's reputation for sex appeal, in which she agreed Bergen could cancel the appearance, ""... if I conducted or do conduct myself without due regard to public conventions and morals or have done or do anything which will tend to disgrace me in society or bring me into pubic disrepute, contempt, scorn or ridicule, or that will tend to schock [sic], insult or offend the community or public morals or decency or prejudice agency or sponsor or the entertainment industry in general ..."" This rider was especially important in light of the recent fracas concerning her nude photographs that had surfaced earlier in the year and threatened to derail her fledgling career. The same rider also reminds the reader of the high pitch of anti-communist hysteria at the time. Not only did Monroe agree not to offend any moral sensibility during the program, she also agreed that her appearance could be terminated in the event she was ""... held in contempt by any Congressional committee or other governmental body and any refusal to testify before any such committee or governmental body, whether for legally justifiable reasons or otherwise."" The language obliquely referred to the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC), which had become infamous after it began investigating Hollywood in 1947. Those who refused to testify before the committee were blacklisted by the industry, including Charlie Chaplain, Orson Welles, Paul Robeson and other greats. The activities of HUAC would be mimicked by another McCarthy, Senator Joe McCarthy, who, beginning in 1953, chaired the Senate Permeant Subcommittee on Investigations. The senator's well-publicized hearings and the aggressive methods employed to badger and intimidate witnesses became known as ""McCarthyism."" Judging from contemporary media reports, Monroe's appearance with Charlie McCarthy (no relation) was an enormous hit. During the program, the pair announced their engagement, much to the consternation of Edgar Bergen who ""admitted that losing Charlie would be like having his pocket picked."" McCarthy, for his part, assured listeners that he would allow Ms. Monroe to continue her screen career. ""'Certainly I'm gonna let her work. I love the girl. I don't want to interfere with her career?"or her income.'"" (Charles Denton, ""Charlie McCarthy Captures Heart of Marilyn Monroe,"" United Press, October 31, 1952)"

Improvisations: Spring Fantasia Masquerade Ball. May 15, 1952

New York: Artists Equity Association, 1952. Slim folio, original spiral-bound color lithographic pictorial wrappers, with one hundred original lithographs (several printed in color) by various artists on colored laid paper. Handbill announcing "Dagmar, Queen of Spring Fantasia" laid in. Expert repair to upper wrapper, closed marginal tear to one plate, small stain to lower margin affecting upper wrapper and a dozen plates. Limited first edition program, one of two thousand copies, commemorating the 1952 Spring Fantasia, the annual fundraising masquerade ball for Artists Equity Association. AEA was founded in 1947 to advance the economic interests of American artists in the face of dwindling government support for the arts after the Second World War. In its efforts to enlist private and institutional backing, the Association solicited program advertisements from a host of businesses large and small. Member artists were selected by advertisers to supply original artwork and given complete freedom of expression: "Spontaneity and fun, in the spirit of our annual Spring Fantasia Masquerade Ball, was the objective rather than orthodox merchandising." While predictably showcasing many galleries, museums and art supply shops, the program also features ads for CBS, Guerlain, Life Magazine, the Russian Tea Room, S. Klein, Encyclopedia Britannica, Harry Winston and Maidenform. Contributing artists include Milton Avery, Antonio Frasconi, Jacob Lawrence, Reginald Marsh, Ben Shahn, and Max Weber, among others. The spirited program notes, together with the sponsor and patron listings, reflect the midcentury merger of art, business and New York society. A very good copy of a fragile production, complete with one hundred original lithographs.

        La France de profil

Lausanne: La Guilde du Livre,, 1952. Quarto. Original pictorial wrappers over thick card stock boards. With original glassine wrapper. Monochrome plates throughout. Charming contemporary gift inscription in French with drawing of a cat to front free endpaper. Glassine slightly chipped at foot of spine. An excellent copy with exceptionally bright contents. First edition, first printing, of one of Roth's '101 seminal photographic books of the 20th century'. "In the early 1950s Paul Strand moved from the United States to Europe, largely to escape the spectre of McCarthyism... His intention [with this book] had been to find the perfect French village or small town and to photograph it in depth. But the ideal community was not forthcoming, so he utilized images that he had gathered from all over France to make this book with the left-wing writer, Claude Roy. Of all Strand's books, La France de profil (A Profile of France) is the truest collaboration with a writer... [Strand] finds poetry everywhere... including more weathered walls even than Atget, as well as equally weathered faces, lustrous clouds over fecund fields, and a fine picture of a lazy reed-lined stream" (Parr & Badger). Text in French. The quality of the reproductions is superb.

Comprehensive letters to the German artist Irmgard Hasenbach-Tavolato (née Seeling, 1899-1978), on the loss of his work (1948) and an exhibition (1952): "At least life is saved, although everything else is lost. What hurts me most, is the loss of my work, whole periods from 1905 onwards were smashed, a vast number of drawings irretrievably lost [.]" (Berlin, 31. III. 1948). - "Luckily all this fuss is now behind me. It proved very difficult to assemble all the necessary pictures for the exhibition, for most of my work has been lost.

[Attributes: Soft Cover]
