Jahr der Republik China”. – Mit Darstellungen von Pflanzen, Früchten, Vögeln, Steinen. Gutes Exemplar. A facsimile of a rare seventeenth-century Ming Dynasty work (1644-45) that was a milestone in the development of Chinese and world colour printing. The printer and compiler, Zheng-yan Hu (ca. 1582-1672) is credited with pioneering aubtle printing techniques such as wiping the block for graded colour effect and gaufrage (Embossing). The elegant designs document the style and taste of th period, including motifs that apeear in late Ming paintinh: rocks, bamboo, insects, landscape scenes, famous hermits of antiquity, The facsimile was produced by Rong Bao Zhai Studio, China\'s foremost publisher of wood-block and scoll reproductions. The original woodcut techniques were used on a high qualty paper to re-create with extraordinary accuracy the great variety of colour and subtle effects, including the ubcoloured embossed designs. The work is a monument of colour printing in both the historical and modern sense. This limited edition includes the original prefaces of 1644 by Yü-jian Li and Ke-gong Li, as well as a preface and a postscript by the well-known scholar Zheng-duo Zheng. Each of the 4 volumes has a table of contents listing the subjects in groups.         La France de profil

Lausanne: La Guilde du Livre,, 1952. Quarto. Original pictorial wrappers over thick card stock boards. With original glassine wrapper. Monochrome plates throughout. Charming contemporary gift inscription in French with drawing of a cat to front free endpaper. Glassine slightly chipped at foot of spine. An excellent copy with exceptionally bright contents. First edition, first printing, of one of Roth's '101 seminal photographic books of the 20th century'. "In the early 1950s Paul Strand moved from the United States to Europe, largely to escape the spectre of McCarthyism... His intention [with this book] had been to find the perfect French village or small town and to photograph it in depth. But the ideal community was not forthcoming, so he utilized images that he had gathered from all over France to make this book with the left-wing writer, Claude Roy. Of all Strand's books, La France de profil (A Profile of France) is the truest collaboration with a writer... [Strand] finds poetry everywhere... including more weathered walls even than Atget, as well as equally weathered faces, lustrous clouds over fecund fields, and a fine picture of a lazy reed-lined stream" (Parr & Badger). Text in French. The quality of the reproductions is superb.

[Attributes: Soft Cover]

        Letters to Grant Richards

[Hurst]: Peacocks Press 1952 - Cockerell boards, printed paper label. Spine very slightly darkened and very slightly rubbed at foot. Edition limited to 200 numbered copies, this no. 1 and the publisher's own, with his (Alan Anderson, "Et in Arcadia ego"; and Will Carter, blue) book-labels; later pencilled ownership signature of the Corvo collector Robert Scoble. Printed by Guido Morris. "Conscious that he was being criticised for the shoddiness of his previous publications," Robert Scoble records in The Corvo Cult, "Sims this time put the printing in the hands of a devoted Corvine . . . 'Letters to Grant Richards [Scoble quotes the Guido Morris scholar Anthony Baker] . . . gave Morris his only opportunity of giving typographical expression to his long-standing admiration for Corvo. At Langford, Angus McBean remembers, he had first editions of all the Corvo titles then published, and had starved himself to get them. "There is a touch of Corvo about him" remarks Sven Berlin, and Morris himself writes that possibly he “enjoyed the Corvo so much because I was a terrific Corvo fan, and perhaps a kindred spirit". Some copies were printed on blue paper, and these were supposed to be the de luxe part of the edition; but Morris prefers the copies on a very white handmade, "probably one of my finest pieces of printing".'" In his catalogue 107 Sims offered the copy he inscribed on publication to Martin Secker, commenting, "A review in the T.L.S. censured the lack of editorial comment in this book which led to a relative of Grant Richards taking steps re libel on G.R.; Martin Secker intervened and the matter was happily resolved." Ten extra, unnumbered, copies were printed on Hodgkinson azure hand-made paper (and bound variously by Sangorski). The standard issue sold for 32s 6d. Significantly, the publisher has not filed in his own copy the precautionary postscript "apology" notice issued to placate Grant Richards's family. Despite all, Richards emerges respectably from this (one-sided) correspondence of 1899-1902. Woolf A13. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

New York: Simon & Schuster in Collaboration with Éditions Verve, [1952].. Small folio. Decorated boards after a design by Matisse. Illustrated with 126 photographs (some double spread). An unusually nice copy, near fine, in slightly tanned dust jacket (replicating Matisse?'s design) with a few smudges at the extreme lower edges, a short closed tear at the top edge of the front panels, and a few short tears and a small creased snag at the edges of the rear panel. First edition, US issue, printed in France. Accompanied by the separate [12]pp. quarto leaflet printing the captions to the photographs in English. The design was undertaken by Teriade, with the collaboration of Marguerite Lang, and the photographs engraved and printed in heliogravure by Draeger Frères. This state of the dust jacket prints comments on the rear inner flap by Monroe Wheeler, Philippe Halsman, Jacob Deschin, et al. In his important introduction to this collection, one of the defining books in the field of photography from the immediate post WWII years, Cartier- Bresson sums up the principles that would inspire the work of countless photographers for the next half- century or more: ?"There is nothing in this world that does not have a decisive moment ... To me, photography is the simultaneous recognition, in a fraction of a second, of the significance of an event as well as of a precise organization of forms which give that event its proper expression." The initial edition consisted of approximately 3000 French language copies and 7000 English language copies, and like any number of significant books, received highly positive reviews but sold only a slow trickle of copies. Because of the nature of the binding and dust jacket, copies in agreeable condition, as here, are few and far between. The first faithful reprint was finally published in late 2014.
