        The Decisive Moment (First Edition)

New York: Simon and Schuster in collaboration with Editions Verve of Paris, 1952. First Edition. First Edition. Board and jacket design by Henri Matisse. 126 black and white plates with original "Captions" booklet laid-in as issued. One of the most influential collections of 20th century street photography ever released; popularized by Cartier-Bresson's unique ability to capture the emotive nature of his subjects. The book's title came from an 17th century essay by Cardinal de Retz, in which he states "there is nothing in this world that does not have a decisive moment." As a result, the concept of waiting for the correct "moment" has been attributed to modern photographic technique ever since. Very Good in a Very Good dust jacket. Boards slightly bowed and toned at the edges, with light rubbing overall. Jacket has some dampstaining at the rear panel and flap, light toning at the spine, and a few closed tears. Roth 101, pp. 134-135. Parr & Badger Vol. 1, pp. 208-209.

Random House [1952]., New York - Octavo, cloth. First edition. "Describes a pacifist but masochist society in 1990, whose members have their limbs amputated and replaced by more efficient plastic appliances." - Gerber, Utopian Fantasy (1973), p. 159. "On its literary merits . LIMBO is one of the best American dystopias ever written, fully comparable with WE, BRAVE NEW WORLD, and NINETEEN EIGHTY-FOUR." - Survey of Science Fiction Literature III, pp. 1221-5. "LIMBO and Vonnegut's PLAYER PIANO, both written in 1952, are without question the two outstanding novels exploring the dystopian future vision of computers and automation. Vonnegut's novel is a better one artistically, but Wolfe's is creative in its images of a future that might be possible with technologies based on cybernetic concepts, and it is penetrating in its insights about human nature." - Warrick, pp. 147-50.         Invisible Man

Random House, New York 1952 - First edition, first printing book in later state jacket (Gordon Parks' photo of Ellison on rear panel, but price of $5.95). Inscribed by Ellison to Random House publisher Fred Goldstein per previous bookseller typed note. A mysterious character as we've been unable to find records on this man. Ellison did not publish much in his lifetime, so it wouldn't require a large imaginative leap to think Mr. Goldstein played a role during the publication of Invisible Man. Nonetheless, inscribed first printings are relatively rare and a welcome addition to any collection. An important work touching on many critical issues including race and existentialism. Both book and jacket in near fine condition with minor wear to extremities but still very pleasing. Housed in custom case. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

The Old Man and the Sea

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1952 First edition, first printing. Publisher's light blue cloth, spine lettered in metallic silver, author's signature to the front board in blind; in the original unclipped dust jacket, with an illustration of houses along a coast to front panel, olive tint photograph of the author by Lee Samuels to the rear panel. Near fine, with light toning to the spine, a hint of wear to the spine ends, very slight lean to the spine; unclipped dust jacket, with minor wear to the spine ends, a hint of toning to the spine, short closed tear at the spine tail, faint toning to the spine, bright and clean panels. A fresh copy. Hanneman A24. The Old Man and the Sea is one of Hemingway's most popular and widely acclaimed novels and the winner of the 1953 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. Additionally, The Old Man and the Sea is accredited with being a major contributor to Hemingway's 1954 awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize in Literature. The plot tells of elderly protagonist Santiago, a fisherman, and his struggle with a giant Marlin off the coast of Havana, Cuba. Metaphorically, it is the story of Hemingway's own struggle to continue to write and preserve his art in spite of his fame and the cost it has taken on his mental and physical health; like Santiago who had not caught a fish in months, Hemingway had not written a novel since over a decade prior. This award-winning novel was Hemingway's last significant piece of writing before his death in 1961.. 1st Edition.. Hard Cover. Near/Dust Jacket Included.

D'Arcy Ryan's annotated copy of 'Australian Totemism.' A Re-examination of the Problem, with Special Reference to Recent Field Work. Thesis for the degree of B-Litt.'.

Oxford: 1952 - The author's copy of the typewritten thesis of Australian anthropologist D'Arcy Ryan, for the degree of B. Litt. at Lincoln College, Oxford, on Australian totemism, with his pencil annotations. D'Arcy Ryan (1923 - 2014) was born in Bondi, educated in Sydney and Oxford and lectured for 25 years at the University of Western Australia, an expert on the Mendi people of the Highlands of Papua New Guinea. The author put his academic work at Oxford into perspective in his autobiographical essay in another work, "Ethnographic Presents: Pioneering Anthropologists in the Papua New Guinea Highlands", edited by Terence Hays: "In these days, when many postgraduate students are demanding that supervisors be a cross between a parent, confessor, and nanny, the casual style of Oxford supervision may seem incredible; indeed, in retrospect, it was. I was rash enough to remark on this at one stage, and received the reply (from E -P) [Evans- Pritchard]: "I'm afraid we don't indulge in spoon feeding Here!" I came to realize that this meant in practice an almost complete abdication from any sense of duty or responsibility to students, who were singularly blessed to be Here [Oxford] at all." (University of California Press, Berkeley, CA, 1992. p200). Contents in the thesis include: the Ecological and Social Setting of Totemism; the Religious Life of the Aborigines; theories of Totemism; Appendix I: Circumcision and Subincision; Appendix II: Psycho-analytical theories: Freud and Roheim.8vo, [iv], 272pp, folding map, map.
