James Mason on the set of "Julius Caesar" (1952)

N.p.: N.p., 1952. Vintage oversize double weight photograph of James Mason on location in Bronson Canyon, California, for the shooting of "Julius Caesar" in 1952. Shot, struck, and mounted by the film's still photographer, Bob Willoughby. SIGNED by Willoughby at the bottom right margin in black ink, with his rubber stamp on the verso (noting his address Los Angeles). Full provenance available. After studying with Saul Bass at the Kann Institute of Art in Los Angeles, Willoughby began working as a photographer for magazines such as "Life," "Look," and "Harper's Bazaar" in the late 1940s. It was while on assignment covering Judy Garland in a "A Star is Born" that Willoughby's ability to capture his subjects' spontaneity, humor, and vulnerability, resulting in images that were far different from more traditional film stills, came to Hollywood's attention and earned him his first "Life" magazine cover. Willoughby spent the next 20-plus years working as a set photographer for every major studio, documenting some of most important films of the era and creating intimate portraits of some of Hollywood's greatest celebrities. Technically and stylistically innovative, Willoughby built the first remote radio-controlled cameras used on film sets, pioneered the use of the "silent blimp" for 35mm cameras, and created brackets to mount his cameras directly over the movie cameras to capture the same images. Willoughby moved his family to County Cork, Ireland in 1972, working on only a handful of films through the late 1970s and early 1980s, though he would continue to photograph, exhibit, and publish books for the remainder of his life. The stills in this collection were given by Willoughby to friends in Kilbrittain, Ireland just prior to his move to Vence, France in 1989, where he would remain until his death in 2009. Perhaps more than any other photographer, Willoughby is responsible for creating the the look of mid-century celebrity and moviemaking in the popular imagination, with his images printed in magazines literally every week of his career. But beyond being prolific, Willoughby's legacy rests with his ability capture the essence of the actors he photographed, as well as the films with which those photographs were associated. As Sydney Pollack said in his introduction to Willoughby's autobiography, "Sometimes a filmmaker gets a look at a photograph taken on his own set and sees the 'soul' of his film in one still photograph. It's rare, but it happens. It happened to me in 1969, the first time I looked at the work of Bob Willoughby during the filming of "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?" Willoughby's photographs are in the permanent collections of ten museums, including The National Portrait Galleries in Washington, DC and London, the Bibliotheque Nationale de France, The Museum of Modern Art, and The Tate Modern. In a custom museum-quality frame, archivally mounted, with UV glass. 16 x 17.25 inches. Near Fine.

[Original Color Linocut British Double Crown Poster for:] MURDER IN THE CATHEDRAL

London: The Westminster Press [for:] The Academy Cinema, 1952. Large folio (30 x 20"; 76 x 51 cm). Original color linoleum cut, with text. Slightly curled from having been rolled (but never folded), very light use at edges, with a couple of tiny nicks and minor edge tears, otherwise very good to near fine. One of the iconic British film posters of its decade, with the central image executed as an original multi-color linocut by the eminent German-born British poster artist, Peter Strausfeld, for George Hoellering's film adaptation of Eliot's play. Strausfeld "was born in Cologne in 1910 and his engagement with expressionism, in the late 1920s and throughout the 1930s, defined his art. His life-long love of the woodcut and the linocut began here and his cinema posters are a natural reflection of this interest. As a result of his political and cultural opposition to the Nazis, Peter came to Brighton at the start of the Second World War. During internment in 1940-41 on the Isle of Man at the Onchan Internment Camp, he met the Austrian film producer George Hoellering. In 1947 Hoellering established the Academy Cinema in London and Peter became its poster designer. He held this job until his death in 1980. The Academy Cinema became the most important independent cinema in this country for the premiere exhibition of what are now recognised as the classic works of post-war world cinema ... In 1950-1, Peter worked with Hoellering on the film version of 'Murder in the Cathedral' and, as a result, Peter won the prize for best art direction at the Venice Film Festival in 1951. He also worked as an illustrator for the Folio Society. Peter taught at Brighton College of Art and later Brighton Polytechnic in the Department of Graphics from 1959 to 1980" - University of Brighton, Graphic Arts Hall of Fame (online). This poster has been frequently reproduced in facsimile in later years; this original bears the determinative imprint of the Westminster Press, as well as the obvious qualitative features of the original linocut that are absent from the reproductions.         Photo Album - RARE Large Format Photos of Young Monarchs - Queen Elizabeth II & Prince Phillip - African Tour

Uganda, 1952. Kenya, Uganda, 1952-1954. Set of 45 large format, original gelatin silver print photographs taken in Nairobi, Jinja, Mombasa, and on journeys in between, by George Rodger and his partners in Magnum Photos, featuring rare photographs of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip on their tour to Africa. Photographs vary in size, the smallest measuring approximately 19 x 11 cm, and the largest measuring approximately 27 x 23 cm. Thirty-two (32) are mounted onto heavy cardstock measuring between 25 x 20 and 34,5 x 29 cm. The lot contained in an archival folder for protection. Mounts slightly bowed otherwise very good condition, rare and pleasing images. The present set of rare professional photographs forms a lovely visual chronicle of Queen Elizabeth II on her earliest visits to Kenya (1952) and Uganda (1954), the second journey being when she learned of her father's death and subsequently became Queen of England. In 1952 Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip flew to Nairobi. Only five days later, while on this trip, Elizabeth II became Queen of the Commonwealth upon the death of her father, King George VI, 6 February 1952. Upon landing in Nairobi on the 1st of February, the royal couple was greeted by the Governor of Kenya, Sir Philip Mitchell, then driven to Government House where they attended a garden party. Then still 'Princess' Elizabeth, she visited the New Stanley Hotel as part of the world tour, being there the day before the death of her father, King George VI, and her subsequent succession as Queen of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth. The following day they attended a civic luncheon and visited Nairobi National Park. That evening they stayed at the Royal Sagana lodge, which was a wedding gift from the Kenyan Government. In this set, Elizabeth II is seen at the New Stanley Hotel in Nairobi, peering out from a balcony towards Woolworth's department store and a fairly busy street. Other city scenes are taken in Nairobi including the Ahmed Omar produce market and a view of Kenyatta Avenue (formerly Delamere Ave) where we faintly see the shop signage of Ahmed Brothers. Especially scarce is a photograph of the original Royal Sagana fishing lodge, with another showing its garden style entrance. It was at this lodge that Elizabeth learned of her father's death. Lovely coastal scene photographs also show fishing boats just off the shore. While at Sagana, Philip took the call from the princess's secretary who was staying at the Outspan Hotel. Philip took his wife for a walk along the trout stream by the lodge and told her the bad news. The king had been ill for some time, and in preparation for this untimely scenario, Elizabeth had packed mourning clothes in her suitcase. [The Sagana lodge was destroyed in the Mau Mau Uprising and has since been replaced by another.] The collection further features views from Mombasa including Fort Jesus, a street scene from Old Town with a Hindu Temple in the background, as well as two close-up photographs of the same temple. As part of a six month world tour (November 1953 to May 1954), H.M. Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, visited Uganda 28-30 April 1954. They arrived at Entebbe near Kampala by air, where they were greeted by Sir George Erskine. From there they travelled to Jinja. At Jinja, Queen Elizabeth presented the colours and inspected the guard, then addressed the 4th Uganda Battalion, Kings African Rifles. She met the Chaplains and was then escorted to her car by General Sir Erskine. The couple also stopped at Katunguru, where they were welcomed by Mugabi Gasyonga II of Ankole. [Mugabe or Omugabe of Ankole is the title given to the monarch of the former Kingdom of Ankole in Uganda, which was abolished in 1967.] Four photographs illustrate a welcoming ceremony and official visit to the village of Kikorongo, Elizabeth being seen in three of these, Philip in two. [Kikorongo is situated between Kampala and what is now Queen Elizabeth National Park]. One of the photographs captures Governor of Kenya Sir Evelyn Baring with the Kabaka (King) of Buganda, Matesa II, together inspecting the Guard of Honour. [Major General Sir Edward Frederick William David Walugembe Mutebi Luwangula Muteesa II KBE (1924-1969) was Kabaka of the Kingdom of Buganda from 22 November 1939 until his death. He was the thirty-fifth Kabaka of Buganda and the first President of Uganda. Representing Africa's tribal culture and wild kingdom, photographs show round huts with peaked straw roofs, quaint villages, and a traditional tribal dance. A series of big game photographs included herein may have been taken at Kazinga National Park which in 1954 was renamed to Queen Elizabeth National Park to commemorate the queen's visit to Uganda. [The park was officially established in 1952 and formerly known as Ruwenzori Park.] Finally, the photographer himself, George Rodger, is seen as a spectator at a lively outdoor game of tug-of-war. African men of business and military are cheering on a winner. In 1947, Rodger became a founding member of Magnum Photos. Over the next thirty years, he worked as a freelance photographer, taking on many expeditions and assignments to photograph the people, landscape and nature of African nations. Magnum photographers has chronicled Queen Elizabeth's life from her first official visit to Jamaica in 1953 to the present day, including her visits to New York, Holland, Ghana after independence, the Silver Jubilee of 1977, and the Royal weddings and funerals. George Rodger (1908-1995) was a British photojournalist, famed for his work in Africa, and also for photographing the mass deaths at Bergen-Belsen concentration camp at the end of the Second World War. In 1947, Rodger became a founding member of Magnum Photos. Over the next thirty years, he worked as a freelance photographer, taking on many expeditions and assignments to photograph the people, landscape and nature of African nations. In 1949 Rodger was on a two-year journey across Africa to record the tribes whose lives had not yet been influenced by colonialism, and to produce a series of photographs that gave insight into the lifestyle and habits of these unfamiliar people. His work there earned him international fame. In that same year, his series on the Nuba group was published in Weekly Illustrated, followed by a censored version (showing no genitals or blood) in National Geographic in 1951. In 1955, Rodger published his book of photographs, 'Village des Noubas', with his own accompanying text. The powerful images, especially of the native wrestling matches, became world renowned. Much of Rodger's photojournalism in Africa was published in National Geographic as well as other magazines and newspapers. A retrospective exhibition of Rodger's work was held at Imperial War Museum North in 2008. Magnum Photos is an international photographic cooperative owned by its photographer-members, one of the first to be owned and administered entirely by members. Its founders were Robert Capa, George Rodger, David "Chim" Seymour, Henri Cartier-Bresson, William Vandivert (all photographers), Rita Vandivert and Maria Eisner. Many of Elizabeth's official tours were undertaken on the Royal Yacht Britannia. It was launched by the Queen on April 16, 1953 and was commissioned for service on January 7,1954. Britannia was first used by Elizabeth when she embarked with the Duke of Edinburgh on May 1,1954 at Tobruk for the final stage of their Commonwealth Tour returning to the Pool of London. The last time Elizabeth was on board for an official visit was on August 9, 1997 for a visit to Arran. It was de-commissioned in December 1997. During this time, Britannia travelled more than a million miles on Royal and official duties. Queen Elizabeth's first Commonwealth tour began on November 24, 1953, and included visits to Bermuda, Jamaica, Panama, Fiji, Tonga, New Zealand, Australia, the Cocos Islands, Ceylon, Aden, Uganda, Libya, Malta and Gibraltar. The total distance covered was 70,196km. . Very Good.

La Croisade De Lee Gordon [Lonely Crusade]

Paris: Correa, 1952. First French Edition, and the first edition to appear with an introduction by Himes' compatriot Richard Wright. Wrappered issue. Near Fine in a Very Good plus dust jacket, with only a few small chips to note. The striking jacket design comically depicts the interracial tension of the novel's protagonist in a way that would likely never have been allowed by Himes' American publisher, Knopf, who first issued the book in 1947. The second of two novels written by Himes during his tenure as a screenwriter in Los Angeles (the other was "If He Hollers Let Him Go"), both dealing with the influx of the black population into that city as a result of the growing defense industry.
