        East Of Eden

Viking, NY, 1952. 1st edition. Hardcover. Original lime-green cloth in near fine condition, firm binding, and extremely clean pages. Many extant dustjackets are price-clipped, but this one shows $4.50 on the front flap. There are some chips to the extremities, a tear to the lower front edge and some bits of rubbing, otherwise the jacket is very good, with the author's photograph on the rear panel. Often regarded as Steinbeck's masterpiece, this is a very decent copy.

D'Arcy Ryan's annotated copy of 'Australian Totemism.' A Re-examination of the Problem, with Special Reference to Recent Field Work. Thesis for the degree of B-Litt.'.

Oxford: 1952 - The author's copy of the typewritten thesis of Australian anthropologist D'Arcy Ryan, for the degree of B. Litt. at Lincoln College, Oxford, on Australian totemism, with his pencil annotations. D'Arcy Ryan (1923 - 2014) was born in Bondi, educated in Sydney and Oxford and lectured for 25 years at the University of Western Australia, an expert on the Mendi people of the Highlands of Papua New Guinea. The author put his academic work at Oxford into perspective in his autobiographical essay in another work, "Ethnographic Presents: Pioneering Anthropologists in the Papua New Guinea Highlands", edited by Terence Hays: "In these days, when many postgraduate students are demanding that supervisors be a cross between a parent, confessor, and nanny, the casual style of Oxford supervision may seem incredible; indeed, in retrospect, it was. I was rash enough to remark on this at one stage, and received the reply (from E -P) [Evans- Pritchard]: "I'm afraid we don't indulge in spoon feeding Here!" I came to realize that this meant in practice an almost complete abdication from any sense of duty or responsibility to students, who were singularly blessed to be Here [Oxford] at all." (University of California Press, Berkeley, CA, 1992. p200). Contents in the thesis include: the Ecological and Social Setting of Totemism; the Religious Life of the Aborigines; theories of Totemism; Appendix I: Circumcision and Subincision; Appendix II: Psycho-analytical theories: Freud and Roheim.8vo, [iv], 272pp, folding map, map. Quarter blue cloth and dark blue buckram boards, with title at spine in white on black, printed by a label maker. Libraries Australia ID 42956953.         Grabhorn Press] HUNGERFIELD

San Francisco: Grabhorn Press, 1952. Limited Edition, one of 30 copies privately printed for friends of the author. Hard Cover. Folio. Bound as issued in linen backed boards; stamped spine label; boards are trifle rubbed at the edges; a bit of sunning to the covers towards the top; an early newspaper clipping with a Jeffers poem is laid down on the front pastedown with some offsetting to the preliminary leaves; residue below this clipping suggests another such item was pasted down and has come off. This edition predates the trade printing of "Hungerfield" by two years. An exceptionally scarce Grabhorn Press and Jeffers item--one of only 30 printed at least 10 of which are currently held by institutions making it all the more uncommon for this title to come on the market. It is inscribed by Jeffers to Melba Berry Bennet who was a close friend and his biographer. An extraordinary association copy of an extremely scarce book. GB 529. Signed by Jeffers.

        Limelight (Original Film Program)

Los Angeles: United Artists, 1952. Original US program for the 1952 film. Autobiographically reflective of Chaplin's fears of being left behind in the fading vaudeville and silent film era, "Limelight" depicts the final years of a washed up stage clown who briefly maintains an impossible relationship with a young dancer, representative of a new generation of performers. The first and only time that Charlie Chaplin and fellow silent film star Buster Keaton would appear onscreen together, "Limelight" is also notable for being the only Chaplin picture to win an Academy Award, albeit for the original score of the 1972 re-release. 9 x 12 inches, 16 pages, saddle stitched two color wrappers. Very Good plus, with light rubbing at the extremities. Criterion Collectiopn 756.
