Autograph letter signed in full to an unnamed correspondent, most probably Heinz Drewes

The present letter was apparently actually completed on June 19, confirmed by the statement that the permit for travel to Switzerland was refused "yesterday, June 18" (Trenner, Chronik, p. 627, confirms this date of refusal). Die Liebe der Danae was canceled after Goebbels declared the "Total War" on August 1; a dress rehearsal was held on August 16, but the production never opened, and the first public performance of the opera did not take place until 1952. The letter testifies to Strauss's close relationship with leading officials of Nazi Germany and its allies. Heinz Drewes (1903-1980), a conductor by training, was head of Division X (music) at the Reichsministerium für Volksaufklärung und Propaganda. Koichi Ehara was a diplomat of the Japanese puppet state "Manchukuo" at the embassy in Berlin; Timothy Jackson (University of North Texas) presented a paper, "Richard Strauss and Japanese Fascism," at the Annual Meeting of the American Musicological Society in Louisville, Kentucky, that illuminated the relationship between Strauss and Ehara. Also mentioned is Baldur von Schirach (1907-1974), the leader of Nazi youth organizations and, from 1940, Reichsstatthalter and Gauleiter in Vienna.. 2 pp. Quarto (250 x 225 mm). Dated Vienna, June 17, 1944. In brown ink. In German (with translation). Strauss reports the state of affairs after the official celebration of his 80th birthday. He is satisfied with the celebration, praising conductor Karl Böhm for his contribution, but expresses his frustration regarding the refusal of the Nazi authorities in Berlin to allow him to travel to Switzerland. He looks forward to the first production of his opera Die Liebe der Danae: "Since the Strauss Weeks came to a glorious end with operas and concerts (in which Dr. Böhm excelled, especially proving himself), I have been condemned to sit around in Vienna because the security police in Berlin have not issued my wife and I a permit to enter Switzerland... Thank you for your visit, your beautiful speech [at the Strauss Weeks], and the particularly lovely idea of the Gluck bust that pleases me very much and that is now the pride of my modest art collection, which was enriched especially by the good Japanese, His Excellency [Koichi] Ehara, and attentive friends... I told Clemens Krauss that I have agreed to another Strauss concert in Salzburg on August 6 and ask that you kindly inform the minister [Joseph Goebbels]... whom I hope to see in person on August 1 for [Die Liebe der] Danae." Very slightly worn; creased at folds.

        Steve Canyon for Jack Protey

New York: By the Artist, May 5, 1952. original. Near Fine. Milton Caniff. 8 1/2" by 11" sheet with an original pen & ink with watercolor wash (black, beige, blue, & brown) of Milt Caniff's famous World War II aviator, pipe-smoking Steve Canyon. Presented by Milt Caniff to Jack Protay "with all good wishes," on May 5, 1952, from New York. Milt Caniff (1907-1988) was a cartoonist most famous for "Terry and the Pirates" and the "Steve Canyon" series. The "Steve Canyon" comic strip was begun in 1947 after he terminated "Terry and the Pirates." The dynamic Canyon series continued until Caniff died in 1988. He won the Reuben Award for its excellence in 1971. Steve Canyon was a vet who had been running his own air-transport operation, but out of patriotism re-enlisted in the Air Force to serve during the Korean War. He remained in the U.S. Air Force for the duration of the strip. Other notable characters who were associated with our hero were Copper Calhoon, an evil temptress; Happy Easter, his grouchy millionaire buddy; General Philerie (based on the war hero Phil Cochran), and others. Exceptional presentation and quality!

Eade corrects the titles of a number of the speeches and inserts the Secret Session Speeches in the correct chronological order.

        A Theory of Price Control.

Cambridge, MA: Harvard University Press, 1952. First edition of the economist's first solely authored book. Octavo, original cloth. Signed by Galbraith on the front free endpaper. Near fine in a very good dust jacket. Uncommon, especially signed. In nontechnical language, John Kenneth Galbraith supplies the underlying economic ideas which will help readers understand how particular controls affect the general operation of the economy. He shows why price controls during World War II worked as well as they did and he analyzes the criteria for effective price control both under a fully mobilized economy and under limited mobilization.

En attendant Godot [Waiting for Godot]

Paris: Les Editions de Minuit, 1952. First edition. Fine/about Fine. A Fine copy of the first trade edition, following the 35 signed copies. A fragile softcover book, uncommon in this condition. Spine slightly toned and pages a bit browned, although less than normal. This copy with the original publisher's glassine overwrap also in just about Fine condition (some toning, one small 1/4 split lower rear panel, otherwise complete). Extremely scarce in the glassine. A comparable copy at Swann recently brought $4,420. One of the masterpieces of 20th century theatre - Beckett's hugely influential tragicomedy. Beckett had originally written the play in French between the Fall and Winter of 1948-1949. (Beckett would not translate the play into English until its London premier, in 1955) In fact, this edition of the play - the Minuit edition - was released in 1952, before the play's first performance the next year. Beckett was thought to have been inspired to write the work after viewing Caspar David Friedrich's painting "Mann und Frau den Mond betrachtend" (Man and Woman observing the Moon). Upon its French premier, the play was met with positive reviews and though it was first received somewhat coldly in London, it would soon become a popular and critical success there and worldwide. Some critics, like Norman Berlin, credit the play's wide appeal to its "stripped down" nature - its simplicity encourages a myriad of readings and interpretations that otherwise could not exist. Beckett would later win the Nobel Prize for Literature and "Waiting for Godot" appears on Le Monde's list of the "100 Books of the Century." "It arrives at the custom house, as it were, with no luggage, no passport and nothing to declare: yet it gets through as might a pilgrim from Mars. It does this, I believe, by appealing to a definition of drama much more fundamental than any in the books. A play, it asserts and proves, is basically a means of spending two hours in the dark without being bored." (Contemporary Observer review from the famed drama critic Kenneth Tynan.). Fine in about Fine dust jacket.

        [Photo Album]: South Africa 1952

South Africa. 1952. Oblong quarto. Measuring 10" x 12.5". String-tied red leather over paper boards with "Photographs" stamped in gilt on the front board. Contains 96 sepia toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs measuring between 2.5" x 4" and 5.5" x 7.5", with captions. Album is very good with short tears and edgewear with near fine photographs.A photo album kept by an English woman during a trip to South Africa, then known as The Union of South Africa, a dominion of Great Britain, with her extended family, at least some of whom were Americans. The album takes place during the summer of 1952 and shows various tourist sites throughout Cape Town. The photos show the government buildings and monuments, including the Voortrekkers monument in Pretoria. The indigenous people of the country are seen throughout the album including numerous images of Zulus. There are photos of topless women with captions commenting on their appearance such as "the latest in hairdos," as well as the men and children of the community. Also documented is a trip to a local market with scenes of the travelers as well as the Zulu people purchasing goods. One photo of a Zulu child reads, "my pet picanninny," reflecting the casual racism of the era, which didn't prevent the company from attending a Zulu dance festival which featured "maidens," older women, and a religious group called the Scotchmen. The Zulu men and women are seen with drums and other instruments dancing in traditional clothing and headdresses. One caption reads, "past their heyday but still shaking a mean spear," under a photo of older men dancing. The trip also focused on the landscape of the area with views of the natural beauty of South Africa. One group of photos is captioned, "typical South African scenery with native huts nestling on hillsides," another reads "Indian Ocean at Scottburgh Natal." They took a guided tour up the Umfolozi River to see hippos and crocodiles; a hippo is seen here in the distance in one photo. The South African man who took them up river was captioned "a character." They visited a native village and posed by the huts, "of the beehive type" and with villagers. One photo is captioned, "view from inside the hut" another reads, "gone native" and shows the very well-dressed British people standing beside a thatched hut. Also featured are animals such as monkeys and numerous photos of the Drakensburg Mountains along with a brochure of the gardens there. An interesting photographic account of a South African trip with an emphasis on Zulu culture from a British tourist perspective. .
