      Pour l'Art, Lausanne 10.1952. - En feuilles 29 x 20, couverture imprimée. Une ravissante et délicate gravure originale de Gérard de Palézieux, tirée en taille douce par G. Leblanc à Paris. Fascicule de 5 feuillets, couverture comprise, avec texte de 2 pages, dédié à Georges Nicole. On y entre, sur la pointe des pieds, par une phrase magique, à murmurer du bout des lèvres : "Il neige de l'autre côté du monde." L'un des livres les plus rares de l'auteur, qui manque avec l'inaugural "Adieu" (au tirage total à peine supérieur de 80 exemplaires) de 1927 à la plupart des collections. La gravure est d'un format un peu inférieur à l'ouvrage, l'ensemble étant très frais. Édition originale. L'un des 50 exemplaires numérotés sur Auvergne à la main.

        The decisive moment;

      Simon and Schuster 1952 - First American edition. Illustrated with Cartier-Bresson's photographs. Includes original captions booklet. Pictorial boards designed by Henri Matisse. Splitting to spine edge. Covers bowed. Generally good internally, except front margin of end page discolored at the margin. The Decisive Moment" originally titled "Images a la Sauvette"-is one of the most famous books in the history of photography, assembling Cartier-Bresson's best work from his early years. Published in 1952 by Simon and Schuster, New York, in collaboration with Editions Verve, Paris, it was lavishly embellished with a collage cover by Henri Matisse. The book and its images have since influenced generations of photographers. Its English title has defined the notion of the famous formal peak in which all elements in the photographic frame accumulate to form the perfect image. Paired with the artist's humanist viewpoint, Cartier-Bresson's photography has become part of the world's collective memory. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        The Old Man and the Sea.

      Charles Scribner's & Sons, New York 1952 - First edition. Octavo, original light blue cloth. Inscribed by Ernest Hemingway on the front free endpaper. Near fine with some offsetting to the front endpaper in a near fine first issue dust jacket with some wear to the spine extremities. Rare signed and inscribed. Upon its publication in 1952 by Charles Scribner's Sons, The Old Man and the Sea was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction the following year and was cited by the Nobel Committee as contributing to the awarding of the Nobel Prize in Literature to Hemingway in 1954. The novel reinvigorated Hemingway's literary reputation. It initiated a reexamination of his entire body of work. The novel was received with such alacrity, that it restored many readers' confidence in Hemingway's capability as an author. Indeed, the publisher even wrote on an early dust jacket, calling the novel a "new classic," and it was compared by many critics to such revered works as William Faulkner's "The Bear" and Herman Melville's Moby-Dick.         The Natural

      New York: Harcourt Brace and Company, 1952. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. First edition. His first novel. A contemporary (dated 1952) signed and inscribed presentation copy. Fine in red cloth, one of 3 colors with no priority. The dustjacket has a 1/4" tear, and a crease to the rear flap, else the jacket's also fine. Specifically, The Natural is a baseball novel set in the 1930s, but it's really a Gothic novel taken out into the sunshine and set between the chalk lines. Its primary theme is the tragic flaw, while its minor themes touch a succession of juxtapositions including, choices and consequences, morality and responsibility, and rise and fall. Woven through the plotline is a symbolic myth of initiation and isolation, drawing from models of lore as distant as Chrétien de Troyes' Sir Percival (the original Arthurian quest for the Holy Grail), and as near as T. S. Eliot's The Waste Land, and so it is a knight's tale of betrayal, lost virtue, redemption, and extinction, a chilling read, that's dark, deep, leveled, literate, mythological, supernatural, and profound. Generally, it's a reminder that novels are a circus, a carnival, a traveling troupe of secret charm, and of thought in cold storage, a small object that fills an immensity. Novels are, no less than, the history of everything that didn't happen (Book Code).
