        The Natural

New York: Harcourt Brace and Company, 1952. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. First edition. His first novel. A contemporary (dated 1952) signed and inscribed presentation copy. Fine in red cloth, one of 3 colors with no priority. The dustjacket has a 1/4" tear, and a crease to the rear flap, else the jacket's also fine. Specifically, The Natural is a baseball novel set in the 1930s, but it's really a Gothic novel taken out into the sunshine and set between the chalk lines. Its primary theme is the tragic flaw, while its minor themes touch a succession of juxtapositions including, choices and consequences, morality and responsibility, and rise and fall. Woven through the plotline is a symbolic myth of initiation and isolation, drawing from models of lore as distant as Chrétien de Troyes' Sir Percival (the original Arthurian quest for the Holy Grail), and as near as T. S. Eliot's The Waste Land, and so it is a knight's tale of betrayal, lost virtue, redemption, and extinction, a chilling read, that's dark, deep, leveled, literate, mythological, supernatural, and profound. Generally, it's a reminder that novels are a circus, a carnival, a traveling troupe of secret charm, and of thought in cold storage, a small object that fills an immensity. Novels are, no less than, the history of everything that didn't happen (Book Code).

        Wise Blood

New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company, 1952. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Good/fair. First edition, octavo size, 232 pp. Flannery O'Connor (1925-1964), Southern novelist and essayist, wrote only two novels; this, "Wise Blood", was the first. The first chapter is from her master's thesis at the University of Iowa, and she spent five years working with the rest of the text before she was satisfied that it was ready to release to the publisher; she was committed to the process of revision, and her novels went through many drafts before completion. "The hero of 'Wise Blood', Hazel Motes, whom O'Connor was to call 'a Christian malgré lui' in her author's note to the 1962 second edition, sets the tone for the religiously displaced types that haunt her fiction. These unlikely creatures preach strange gospels, engage in rituals of drowning-baptism and 'prayer healing' (burying morbid newspaper stories), have visions near 'hog pens' and before figures of 'artificial Negroes,' and have heads of Byzantine Christs tattooed on their backs. Despite O'Connor's Roman Catholic upbringing and her ongoing commitment to its teachings, her characters tend mainly to be fundamentalist Protestants. These were the religious types she observed most frequently during her years in and around Milledgeville." (N.B., per ANB.) Ms. O'Connor was the recipient of the 1972 National Book Award for her "Complete Stories", which in an online poll taken in 2009 was named the best book ever to have won the National Book Awards.***DESCRIPTION: Original yellow cloth with lettering blocked to backstrip in black, in original dust jacket (correctly labeled with $3.00 to the head of the front flap), octavo size (8.25" by 5.75"), [1-8] 9-232 pp., first edition (so stated), of an edition of 3000 copies.***CONDITION: A good copy only; it has a strong square text block with solid hinges, and is internally clean with no prior owner markings; the corners are straight (albeit somewhat rubbed), we are grading as good only due to a damp stain that worked through the book at the backstrip, causing some chipping to the head and tail of the spine; otherwise a very good copy. The dust jacket is fair to almost good, it is all in one piece with the flaps still quite bright and is not price-clipped, with the authors portrait unscathed; it does suffer from some medium to large chips at all sides, and has evidence of the same stain afflicting the book. Though still a good jacket and intact, we have priced reflecting the condition, which is overall very good.***POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details.***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.         The Natural

New York: Harcourt Brace and Company, 1952. 1st edition of his first book. Red cloth (one of 3 bindings with no priority), a fine copy, in a fine dustjacket (no nicks, tears or fading). Superficially, The Natural is a baseball novel set in the 1930s, but it's really a Gothic novel taken out into the sunshine and set between the chalk lines. Its themes touch a succession of juxtapositions including, choices and consequences, morality and responsibility, and, of course, rise and fall. S. Eliot's The Waste Land, as well as numerous others (some even earlier than the former, some even later than the latter). Malamud's motif is the tragic flaw, and the symbols galore accent birds (including Harriet Bird, the woman in black), water (rain, drowning), the vegetative cycle of spring (including Iris Lemon, who's name was changed to Gaines in the movie), trains (the book opens with Roy's train emerging from a tunnel, his rebirth at the age of 19), and the field (the playing field is The Waste Land), dry and parched when Roy arrives, but after his first hit, rain falls for 3 days and turns the field a vibrant green. And then there is his bat, Wonderboy, an Excalibur forged in lightning. Fine / fine.

In all, a superb set, rarely seen seen in such condition, let alone signed (no other such set we know of exists). Burgess 99, pp. 61-62. Callil and Toibin 200, 39. "Sword of Honour is not merely the story of one man's battles; it is the whole history of the European struggle itself, told with verve, humour, pathos and sharp accuracy." (Burgess). Never planned as a trilogy. Following Officers and Gentlemen, the second installment, Waugh decided he had said all he had to say about Guy Crouchback, heir of a declining aristocratic English Roman Catholic family who, like Waugh, participated in the Dakar expedition, served a stint with the commandos, experienced the débâcle on Crete, and ended the war in Yugoslavia. But Waugh later changed his mind and completed the sequence with Unconditional Surrender. In 1966, he pruned, revised and issued the trilogy as Sword of Honour (the title is drawn from the ceremonial sword, the "Sword of Stalingrad," made "at the King's command," to be presented in recognition of the sacrifices the Soviets had made against the Nazis.) But, according to Burgess, "Most readers prefer to take the items severally and in their unrevised form." In the event, the trilogy is generally regarded as Waugh's greatest achievement in fiction, with its "fine war reportage and superb comic action." Waugh received the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for Men at Arms. Note: With few exceptions (always noted), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves.
