Archive - RAF Service in Sudan - Photographs & Documents - Forced Landing, Aircraft Rescue & Salvage

Sudan 1952 - Sudan, 1952-1953. Archive of photographs and papers of RAF Flying Officer Harold Melville Kent, pertaining to his service in Sudan, and in particular a forced landing made in a desolate hill region south of Khartoum 21 September 1952, including a firsthand account of the event by one of the passengers who was fortuitously a Crash Inspector of the Middle East Air Force, and a series of official photographs of the aircraft rescue and salvage. Several photographs show Sudanese people, their dwellings, daily chores, and assisting with the aircraft rescue. Manuscript account, Folio. 2 leafs, 4 pages in manuscript. Royal Air Force Claim for Indemnification regarding crash landing, 8vo. completed in manuscript and signed. RAF telegraph message and signed letter addressed to Flying Officer Kent, both from early 1953. Photograph album containing 168 snapshot views taken in Sudan, ranging in size from 6 x 6 cm to 8,5 x 12 cm. 8vo. oblong album, 23 x 16 cm, string-tied patterned cloth boards, wear to spine, else very good. Additional twenty-two (22) RAF Crown Copyright Reserved Photographs measuring approximately 16 x 14 cm, each stamped with printing date 23 March 1953 and contained in individual plastic sleeves for protection. An exceptionally fascinating personal air force archive, uniquely focused on a momentous undertaking. Very good condition. Aircraft wreckage and recovery are the focus of these photographs and papers, from the personal archive of the valorous Royal Air Force aviator who made the landing safely enough that none of his passengers were even injured. Following engine failure, officer Kent made a skillful forced landing of a British Vickers Valetta VW819 in the uncharted wilds of Sudan, which was followed by a notable feat of engineering, perseverance, and hard labour - a decidedly monumental rescue mission on behalf of the Royal Air Force. The flight had departed from Khartoum early in the morning, its planned destination being Juba. The aircraft carried six passengers and two large engines as cargo. Alas, a forced landing was necessary, placing the aircraft in a field near Renk, a town in the Upper Nile State of South Sudan, and some 23 miles from a native village called Jebel Megeinis. The pilot's archive memorializes the event and includes the following: A surviving passenger's firsthand manuscript account of the forced landing of RAF aircraft Valetta VW819. The writer was a "Crash Inspector" for the Middle East Air Force, and writes the "true" account of the event, noting authentic and altered reports that were published in newspapers. Excerpts from his manuscript report: "In the green dawn of 21st September 1952 the ill fated Valetta VW 819 stood silhouetted on Khartoum airfield. I had little thought of adventure ahead." "The true story started when, to my alarm, I felt the aircraft suddenly yaw as the starboard engine stopped without warning, some 1 1/2 hours after take-off." ". freight consisted of two aircraft engines - in very large and heavy crates - which resisted our combined efforts to move even slightly. I invited our officer cadet to throw himself overboard to save the rest of us but he failed to respond to this plea. it was clear we were going to force land." "With wheels up the aircraft slid rather bumpily along in a very muddy grassland. Calmly we unstrapped ourselves, opened the door and vacated the aircraft in case of fire." ". returned to study our assets. 14 tins of tinned meat and about a gallon of water. " "A faint drone in the distance heralded the arrival of another civilian passenger aircraft. our plight was known." "Events up to this point were factually reported by the Sudan Star that evening." "As crash inspector Middle East Air Forces I found myself in the unique position of being able to carry out a first hand survey. Confident of early rescue I made a few notes of the damage to the aircraft whilst the others." "About now I became very thankful that our party consisted of only 7 men an

Fables, Eaux - fortes originales de MARC CHAGALL. Paris, Tériade Editeur (Presses de l'Imprimerie National de France), 1952

Esemplare in perfetta conservazione.

Two early letters from his graduate school days in Boston

Boston: "June 15, 1951; September 18", 1952. "The first is a 11" x 8½" T.L.s. to the Dean of the Boston University Graduate School, Charles W. Alter: "I have been accepted in Boston University Graduate School as a regular student and a candidate for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the field of Systematic Theology. I am now interested in finding living accomodations on the campus...A single room would be preferable...I am also interested in applying for a graduate Fellowship..." The request for accomodations is not a matter which was taken lightly. In 1965 King was quoted in the Boston Globe as saying, "I remember very well trying to find a place to live. I went into place after place where there were signs that rooms were for rent. They were for rent until they found out I was a Negro, and then suddenly they had just been rented." The second letter is a 9½" x 7¾" A.L.s. on a pre-printed Boston Graduate School "Petition to the faculty." 14 lines, approx. 110 words: "I am desirous of taking twelve hours towards the PhD degree this semester...At present I have completed twenty-eight hours towards the degree, and passed the French examination. I plan to take the German examination in October, 1952...For the past two years I have been a close student of German. In the light of thuis I am fairly certain that I can pass the examination..." The letter is signed "Martin L. King, Jr. / Graduate Student.""

Two tiny little creases on the top corners of the boards otherwise as new. In the original unclipped first issue color pictorial dust jacket with the price "2.50" on the front flap. A fine copy of the book in its original and very fine dust jacket. Easily the best copy that we have ever seen of this children's classic.Charlotte's Web is a children's novel by American author Elwyn Brooks White (1899-1985) and illustrated by Garth Williams (1912-1996); it was published on October 15, 1952, by Harper & Brothers. "Dear Miss Nordstrom: ? I've recently finished another children's book, but have put it away for a while to ripen?," wrote E.B. White to the renowned children's books editor at Harper & Brothers on the first of March, 1951. The story did not so much ripen as find itself reconstituted, ending up as one of the best-selling American children's books of all time with translations into over twenty languages." (Grolier 100 Childrens' Literature, p.274).The novel tells the story of a pig named Wilbur and his friendship with a barn spider named Charlotte. After her father spares the life of a piglet from slaughtering it as runt of the litter, a little girl named Fern Arable nurtures the piglet lovingly, naming him Wilbur. On greater maturity, Wilbur is sold to Fern's uncle, Homer Zuckerman, in whose barnyard he is left yearning for companionship but is snubbed by other barn animals, until befriended by a barn spider named Charlotte, living on a web overlooking Wilbur's enclosure. Upon Wilbur's discovery that he is intended for slaughter, she promises to hatch a plan guaranteed to spare his life. Accordingly, she secretly weaves praise of him into her web, attracting publicity among Zuckerman's neighbors who attribute the praise to divine intervention. As time passes, more inscriptions appear on Charlotte's webs, increasing his renown. Therefore, Wilbur is entered in the county fair, accompanied by Charlotte and the rat Templeton, whom she employs in gathering inspiration for her messages. There, Charlotte spins an egg sac containing her unborn offspring, and Wilbur, despite winning no prizes, is later celebrated by the fair's staff and visitors (thus made too prestigious alive to justify killing him). Exhausted apparently by laying eggs, Charlotte remains at the fair and dies shortly after Wilbur's departure. Having returned to Zuckerman's farm, Wilbur guards Charlotte's egg sac, and is saddened further when the new spiders depart shortly after hatching. The three smallest remain, however. Pleased at finding new friends, Wilbur names the spiderlings Joy, Nellie, and Aranea, and the book concludes by mentioning that more generations of spiders kept him company in subsequent years.Charlotte's Web was adapted into an animated feature by Hanna-Barbera Productions and Sagittarius Productions in 1973. Paramount released a direct-to-video sequel, Charlotte's Web 2: Wilbur's Great Adventure, in the U.S. in 2003 (Universal released the film internationally). A live-action film version of E. B. White's original story was released in 2006.Grolier 100 Children's Literature #92.

Autograph letter signed in full to an unnamed correspondent, most probably Heinz Drewes

The present letter was apparently actually completed on June 19, confirmed by the statement that the permit for travel to Switzerland was refused "yesterday, June 18" (Trenner, Chronik, p. 627, confirms this date of refusal). Die Liebe der Danae was canceled after Goebbels declared the "Total War" on August 1; a dress rehearsal was held on August 16, but the production never opened, and the first public performance of the opera did not take place until 1952. The letter testifies to Strauss's close relationship with leading officials of Nazi Germany and its allies. Heinz Drewes (1903-1980), a conductor by training, was head of Division X (music) at the Reichsministerium für Volksaufklärung und Propaganda. Koichi Ehara was a diplomat of the Japanese puppet state "Manchukuo" at the embassy in Berlin; Timothy Jackson (University of North Texas) presented a paper, "Richard Strauss and Japanese Fascism," at the Annual Meeting of the American Musicological Society in Louisville, Kentucky, that illuminated the relationship between Strauss and Ehara. Also mentioned is Baldur von Schirach (1907-1974), the leader of Nazi youth organizations and, from 1940, Reichsstatthalter and Gauleiter in Vienna.. 2 pp. Quarto (250 x 225 mm). Dated Vienna, June 17, 1944. In brown ink. In German (with translation). Strauss reports the state of affairs after the official celebration of his 80th birthday. He is satisfied with the celebration, praising conductor Karl Böhm for his contribution, but expresses his frustration regarding the refusal of the Nazi authorities in Berlin to allow him to travel to Switzerland. He looks forward to the first production of his opera Die Liebe der Danae: "Since the Strauss Weeks came to a glorious end with operas and concerts (in which Dr. Böhm excelled, especially proving himself), I have been condemned to sit around in Vienna because the security police in Berlin have not issued my wife and I a permit to enter Switzerland... Thank you for your visit, your beautiful speech [at the Strauss Weeks], and the particularly lovely idea of the Gluck bust that pleases me very much and that is now the pride of my modest art collection, which was enriched especially by the good Japanese, His Excellency [Koichi] Ehara, and attentive friends... I told Clemens Krauss that I have agreed to another Strauss concert in Salzburg on August 6 and ask that you kindly inform the minister [Joseph Goebbels]... whom I hope to see in person on August 1 for [Die Liebe der] Danae." Very slightly worn; creased at folds.
