        Autograph letter initialed

1952 - ROOSEVELT, Eleanor. Autograph letter initialed. Moscow, September 18, [1958]. Single sheet of stationery, measuring 6 by 7 inches; pp. 2. $2600.Original autograph letter written entirely in Eleanor Roosevelt’s hand and sent from Moscow in 1958 to her close friend, university professor and women’s activist Esther Lape, thanking Lape for sending "the Nehru letter," referencing her warm memories of Lape’s late partner, Elizabeth Read, sharing Roosevelt’s post-Moscow travel plans, and initialed in closing by Eleanor Roosevelt. This most desirable letter was written during the second of Eleanor Roosevelt’s two trips to Russia—in the fall of 1958, as evident from Roosevelt’s reference to how "mail has improved this year as everything else has." Dated "Moscow, Sept. 18th" and written on Eleanor Roosevelt’s personal letterhead, the letter reads in full: "Dearest Esther, It is so cold I am wrapped in everything I own, but I want to write a line of thanks for the Nehru letter, very thought provoking & ideas of all kinds are seething through my head for the four columns I’ll write on getting home. I loved Peggy’s letter & Elizabeth must have helped so many of us to honesty & maturity. What a wonderful person she was. I never find her long out of my thoughts. I think the mail has improved this year as everything else has in the material line since last year. your letter of the 11th came this morning. we are seeing what we want & are so nearly through that we plan to leave the 26th by jet in the a.m. & be in Paris about 11 a.m. & take four days before going home. I am glad as Edna & David will enjoy it & so will I. My dear love to you E.R." This letter was written to Esther Lape, one of Eleanor Roosevelt’s closest friends. Lape was an English professor at Barnard, Swarthmore, and the University of Arizona. She also distinguished herself through her participation in the Women’s Trade Union League and as one of the founders of the League of Women Voters. Additionally, Lape was the life partner of Elizabeth Read, Eleanor Roosevelt’s personal attorney and financial advisor. It was that association that brought Lape to the attention of Eleanor Roosevelt and resulted in their friendship. As early as 1920, the three women already had a close professional association, working together on matters pertaining to the League of Women Voters. In 1921, they began meeting as friends, collaborating on the New Women movement. In 1923, Lape and Roosevelt worked alone for the first time, holding a competition for the Bok Peace Prize. When the Senate launched an investigation into whether the Bok Prize was a tool of "foreign governments or foreign institutions," Lape identified Roosevelt as one of the most influential members of the selection committee for the prize. The hearing were suspended with Wilson’s death and never revived. Throughout the 1930s, Lape and Roosevelt worked together on issues such as healthcare and United States recognition of the Soviet Union. With the war, their interests diverged somewhat, but their friendship remained as strong as ever. Lape and her partner Read owned a building in Greenwich Village and Roosevelt, desperate for an escape from the pressures of life as first lady, rented an apartment there. Lape and Read’s country home in Connecticut provided similar refuge. When Read died in 1943, Lape and Roosevelt grew even closer, holding up the memory of a beloved partner and friend. Upon Roosevelt’s death, Lape fought to get a posthumous Nobel Peace Prize for Roosevelt, but failed in that endeavor.A fine autograph initialed letter with an outstanding association.

The Camera Caught It, Bandage Bait, and Bargain Madness [Dollar Day] (Collection of four original screenplays for the 1951 and 1954 short films)

Beverly Hills, CA: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer [MGM], 1952. Four draft scripts for three Pete Smith production shorts "The Camera Caught It" (1954), "Bandage Bait" (1951), and "Bargain Madness" (1951), seen here under the title "Dollar Day." Collection of scripts for three of Pete Smith's later short productions: "The Camera Caught It," "Bandage Bait," and "Bargain Madness." "Bargain Madness" features a passive aggressive fight between two neighboring housewives who attempt to shop at the same department store sale, "Bandage Bait" a barrage of idiotic ways to injure oneself in various places, and "The Camera Caught It" a humorously-narrated series of unusual acts caught on camera. Smith produced and narrated over 150 shorts between the 1930s and 1955, beginning his career at MGM as a publicist and moving on to narration when others noticed his knack for comedy. His unmistakable sharp tenor and nasal tone unwittingly became the analog, the voice we expect to hear in all shorts and news reels of the era, and he was awarded an Honorary Academy Award in 1953 for his work.         A Theory of Price Control (Signed First Edition)

Harvard University Press, Cambridge, MA 1952 - First Edition. Inscribed by the author on the front endpaper: "To John D. Black / Affection and regards / Ken." Dr. John D. Black was a pioneer of agricultural economics and amongst the most prominent figures in the field from 1920 to 1950. He accepted a professorship at Harvard in 1927, and seven years later met Galbraith. They collaborated on research intermittently until Black's retirement in 1956. As a colleague, Black influenced Galbraith's thinking on the practical applications of economics to welfare issues, for which Black laid much groundwork. Black passed away in 1960.Galbraith's second book, a concise work on the applications of price control, circa 1939-1952. The Canadian economist was a former editor of "Fortune" magazine, best known for the seminal work he would write three years later, "The Great Crash of 1929." A strong association, and the earliest example of the author's hand we have encountered.Near Fine in a Very Good plus dust jacket. A hint of foxing and fading to the extremities, else tight and unread. Moderate toning to the jacket, with a couple of small chips, and light rubbing overall.         Walt Disney boldly signs a letter about the Snow White Coronation Ball, with his distinctive flourish

Burbank, CA, February 5, 1952. 7" x 10.25". "Single page TLS on Walt Disney's letterhead, 7"" x 10.25"". Signed ""Walt Disney"", and dated ""February 5, 1952"". Page lightly toned to outer edge, with a few small stains. Pencil marks located to front. Expected folds. Stapled to the personal postmarked envelope which includes Disney's typed address of ""Walt Disney/2400 South Alameda Ave/Burbank, California"", 7.5"" x 4"", with age toning along the left outer edge.A wonderful letter with great content, boldly signed by Walt Disney with his large distinctive flourish. He was writing to Governor Payne of Maine, addressing the ""the beautiful scroll"" he received, inviting him ""to attend the Snow White Coronation Ball at the Somerset Hotel in Boston"". Snow White was enjoying a huge resurgence as it was being re-released in February at the time of this letter. But perhaps of most interest was his revealing response, as he addressed both the strong production schedule during this high growth period for Disney Studios, and most certainly alluded to what was to culminate in the March 27th announcement of a $1.5 million development called Disneyland. ""… this affair could not come at a worse time for me. We are in the middle of getting under way our heaviest production schedule in years, and I have so many important decisions to make in the next few weeks that to leave here for only a few days would present a serious problem""A fantastic letter for a Disney aficionado. Would be stunning framed!"

        WELL DONE NODDY!

Published by Sampson Low, Marston & Co. Ltd., 1952. 1st edition.. Hardback. Very Good/Very Good. Illustrated by Beek, . Slightly better than very good condition in a very good dustwrapper. Orange pictorial paper boards. Colour endpapers. Colour illustrations. 61 Pages. Rounded spine. SIGNED by the author twice! (love from Enid Blyton in belongs to box and "Josephine, Enid Blyton" on an autograph slip which is stuck to same page as belongs to box). Minimal bumping to spine and minimal rubbing to spine and corners. Faint evidence of old pencil price erasure to front free-endpaper otherwise contents are fine. Dustwrapper is very slightly edge rubbed and creased but generally bright and complete, tear to edge of spine on front panel and a tiny hole to rear panel. This copy would make a wonderful gift. [R]

        Un Grido e Paesaggi.

Schwarz Editore 1952 - FIRST EDITION, 7/300 COPIES (from an edition of 350 copies) signed by the author, printed on Fabriano paper with the title-page printed in black and blue and a facsimile of a manuscript page printed in green, 5 plates from pencil drawings by Giorgio Morandi, pp. 84, [iv], 4to, original wrappers printed in black and blue, a little corner creasing, tissue jacket a little frayed and browned to edges with backstrip panel lacking, Clipping of Charles Tomlinson's translation of the opening 'Monologhetto' laid in, good. A presentation copy of this late work from perhaps the foremost Italian poet of the twentieth-century - inscribed by the author on publication 'Per la Signora Antonini e Giacomo Antonini, il caro amico, Giuseppe Ungaretti'. The recipient was an eminent literary critic, with his wife Moussia, who shared with the poet the shame of a fascist past - whilst Ungaretti played an active role in Mussolini's government, Antonini collaborated more discreetly as an informer to the OVRA ((Opera Volontaria di Repressione Antifascista).
