Paris Review, Numbers 1-50, Complete [Signed by Matthiessen and Plimpton]

(Paris): (The Paris Review). (1952-1970). A complete run of the first 50 issues of the groundbreaking literary journal started by Peter Matthiessen, George Plimpton and Harold Humes, which introduced a large number of the most highly respected 20th century writers to their first readers, including Philip Roth, V.S. Naipaul, Adrienne Rich, and others. Jack Kerouac's first excerpt from On the Road was published within, as was Beckett's Molloy and the first pieces from Jim Carroll's Basketball Diaries. The "Writers at Work" series of interviews included was another unparalleled feature and included talks with such writers as William Faulkner, Vladimir Nabokov, William Burroughs, Joan Didion, and others. The first four issues are signed by one or more of the founders: Issues 1 & 2 by Peter Matthiessen and George Plimpton, and issues 3 & 4 by Plimpton alone. Consecutive runs of the early issues, which included so many notable debuts, are difficult to assemble these days, let alone with the early copies signed by the founders, who are now deceased. One of the influential literary journals of the postwar years. All issues are in very good or better condition. First Edition. Softcover. Very Good.

The War Speeches of the Rt. Hon. Winston S. Churchill

London: Cassell and Company Ltd., 1952. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. This is a superior first printing set of the three-volume "definitive" edition of Churchill's war speeches, published during Churchill's second and final premiership. During his long public life, Winston Churchill played many roles worthy of historical note - Member of Parliament for more than half a century, distinguished soldier and war correspondent, author of scores of books, ardent social reformer, combative cold warrior, Nobel Prize winner, painter. But his enduring preeminence owes most to his indispensable leadership during the Second World War, when his soaring and defiant oratory sustained his countrymen and inspired the free world. Of Churchill, Edward R. Murrow said: "He mobilized the English language and sent it into battle.? Between 1941 and 1946, Churchill's war speeches were published in seven individual volumes. Charles Eade played a critical role in their original publication, as well as in the publication of this edition issued during Churchill's second premiership. Charles Eade (1903-1964) was a noted figure in British journalism. In 1938 he became editor of the Sunday Dispatch, a post he held until 1957. Eade was also an early radio sports commentator, and during the Second World War served as public relations advisor to Louis Mountbatten. In 1942 Eade stepped in as compiler of Churchill's wartime speech volumes, replacing Churchill's son, Randolph, who had been called to wartime service. Notably, he offered his services free of charge, stating, "my reward for the task would be the pleasure of doing it" (7 May 1941 letter from Charles Eade to Kathleen Hill). Eade ultimately edited six of the seven wartime volumes - all except the first, Into Battle. For this "definitive" edition of Churchill's war speeches, Eade returned to the role. In 1952, during Churchill's second premiership, the publisher reissued the War Speeches as a new, three-volume edition. This edition is, in many ways, superior to the original seven wartime editions in both aesthetics and content. Gone is the cheap economy paper of the wartime editions. The binding is a heavy navy cloth with attractive, uniform dust jackets. Further, the books each measure a substantial 10 x 6.25 inches. New speeches are added, as is a very helpful index. Some of the original speeches considered peripheral are eliminated while others are retitled and chronological dates are replaced with brief transitional or introductory notes. This first edition, first printing, three-volume set is fine in very good dust jackets. The blue cloth bindings are exceptionally clean ? square, clean, bright, and tight with vivid spine gilt. We note only a few minor corner bumps. The contents are immaculate with no previous ownership marks or spotting. The page edges are likewise immaculate, with no dust soiling or spotting. The dust jackets are complete, unclipped with no losses. Shelf presentation is quite good, with only a hint of uniform spine toning. Apart from light wear to extremities, what prevents our grading these dust jackets as near fine or better is some unobtrusive, scattered light spotting. The dust jackets are protected in removable, archival quality clear covers. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A263.1(I-III).a, Woods/ICS A136(a.1), Langworth p.303.

The Old Man and the Sea.

New York: Charles Scribner's & Sons, 1952. First edition. Octavo, original light blue cloth. Near fine in an excellent first issue dust jacket with the blue tint and $3.00 price with very light rubbing and wear to the extremities. Upon its publication in 1952 by Charles Scribner's Sons, The Old Man and the Sea was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction the following year and was cited by the Nobel Committee as contributing to the awarding of the Nobel Prize in Literature to Hemingway in 1954. The novel reinvigorated Hemingway's literary reputation. It initiated a reexamination of his entire body of work. The novel was received with such alacrity, that it restored many readers' confidence in Hemingway's capability as an author. Indeed, the publisher even wrote on an early dust jacket, calling the novel a "new classic," and it was compared by many critics to such revered works as William Faulkner's "The Bear" and Herman Melville's Moby-Dick.

Esemplare in perfetta conservazione. Sorlier, chagall e Vollard, pp.75-126. Rauch, n.147. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
