        Autograph postcard signed

1952 - ROOSEVELT, Eleanor. Autograph postcard signed. India, 1952. Printed photographic postcard, measuring 5-1/2 by 3-1/2 inches, inked manuscript hand on verso, stamps and postmarks above address. $3600.Printed photographic postcard depicting the Lahori Gate in Fort Delhi addressed entirely in Eleanor Roosevelt's hand to a Mr. Robert Largo and with a message also written by Roosevelt that reads: "Dear Mr. Largo, Thank you for your wise note. Very Sincerely. Eleanor Roosevelt."This wonderful autograph postcard was written during Eleanor Roosevelt's trip through Asia in 1952. Her travels took her through the Middle East, then to Pakistan, then India, and finally to Nepal. Ultimately, her favorable impressions helped to influence America's perceptions of India as both a potential democracy and as a potential ally. In a speech, Roosevelt said, "So I've come back with tremendous hope that India is going to be the country of Asia"""a statement that had consequences for India's future in trade and politics.         The Old Man and the Sea

New York: Charles Scribner's & Sons, 1952. First edition. Octavo, original light blue cloth. Near fine in an excellent first issue dust jacket with the blue tint and $3.00 price with light rubbing and wear to the extremities. Upon its publication in 1952 by Charles Scribner's Sons, The Old Man and the Sea was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction the following year and was cited by the Nobel Committee as contributing to the awarding of the Nobel Prize in Literature to Hemingway in 1954. The novel reinvigorated Hemingway's literary reputation. It initiated a reexamination of his entire body of work. The novel was received with such alacrity, that it restored many readers' confidence in Hemingway's capability as an author. Indeed, the publisher even wrote on an early dust jacket, calling the novel a "new classic," and it was compared by many critics to such revered works as William Faulkner's "The Bear" and Herman Melville's Moby-Dick.

La Semaine A Radio-Canada (Lot Collection of 276 Issues Plus 11 Duplicates, 1952-1962, 1964-1966): L'Hebdomadaire du Reseau Francais, Radio et Television (Magazines)

Societe Radio-Canada, Montreal, Canada 1952 - A significant, although broken, run of 276 issues plus 11 duplicates (Volume III through Volume XVI) of this foundational publication containing perhaps over 2,000 photographs and hundreds of articles related to those working in or featured on Canadian television and radio broadcasting (authors, actors, artists, musicians, singers, conductors, comics, announcers, and many others). Published weekly, a left-folded or left-stapled magazine printed on medium-glossy paper measuring 9-1/4" by 12-1/4" (1952-1962, mostly 8 pages, a handful 12 or 16 pages) or 6-1/2" by 9-1/4" (1964-1966, each with 32 pages). Text is in French. Each issue contains an itemized, daily list for the week of radio and television programs from Canadian Broadcasting Corporation station networks and affiliates. Given that each Volume has 52 weekly issues (an exact itemization is available on request), these are the issues I have: Vol. III (40 issues + 1 dup); Vol. IV (50 issues); Vol. V (50 issues + 1 dup); Vol. VI (50 issues plus 4 dups); Vol. VII (no longer subtitled; 31 issues); Vol. VIII (5 issues); Vol. IX (7 issues); Vol. X (10 issues); Vol. XII (18 issues plus 5 dups); Vol. XIV (1 issue); Vol. XV (1 issue); Vol. XVI (13 issues). Please note that Volume Nos. III, IV, V and VI contain the most issues and are near-complete runs. Condition: the stapled issues, beginning with Volume IX, are rusted (most of the previous issues were not stapled, although a few that were show rust); a light mildew smell through Volume VIII, a bit stronger beginning with Volume IX; most of the issues were previously, but lightly, folded for mailing purposes and show a small machine-printed subscription name and address to the margins; there is no sign of any water exposure and the pages are clean, bright and complete.         Men at Arms; Officers and Gentlemen and Unconditional Surrender [trilogy]

Chapman and Hall, London; 1952, 1955 and 1961 - Octavo. First printings. The three volume trilogy of Evelyn Waugh's military novels, where he spent the war from start to finish as a junior officer engaged chiefly in ordinary regimental soldiering. He recounts the phases of a long love affair, full of vicissitudes, between a civilian and the Army. Men at Arms began with its hero inspired by illusion. Officers and Gentlemen ends with his deflation. Unconditional Surrender explains the mysterious origins of Ludovic, which were left doubtful before and completes the disillusionment of the hero, Guy Crouchback. A handsome and fine ser, all bound in blue cloth, spines lettered in gilt, one tiny bump to one corner, in fine unclipped showing only very minute wear to head of Men at Arms. No names or plates, only one small bookseller's ticket to rear of one volume. Simply, an exceptional set. [Attributes: First Edition]

The Observer Prize Stories [The Author's Copy]

London: Heinemann, (1952). London: Heinemann. (1952). Peter Matthiessen's copy, in which he has re-drafted his included story, "The Centrepiece." These changes were incorporated when the story was republished in the collection On the River Styx in 1989. Front hinge cracked, loss of color to spine extremities; a good copy, lacking the dust jacket, but for the front flap, which is laid in. First Edition. Hardcover. Good.
