Perhaps this is your solution - we need fine teachers here. How about it? N.p. Vintage borderless double weight photograph, circa the late 1950s, depicting world renowned Spanish cellist and composer Pablo Casals playing the cello, while his wife Marta looks on in the background. Rubber stamps for photographer Helene Jeanbrau, the Dalmas Photography Agency, and the International Magazine Service, with light holograph notations in pencil and blue pencil on the verso. A musical virtuoso, Casals was playing solo cello recitals by age fourteen, having learned piano, violin, and flute by the age of four. Tragically, this would not occur until two years after his death at age 96. 6.75 x 9 inches (17 x 23 cm), housed in a 15.75 x 19.75 inch white mat. Near Fine condition.

Ray Bradbury
Doubleday & Company, Inc., New York. This inscribed and jacketed first edition of Bradbury’s first major work and enduring classic, The Martian Chronicles, is inked in blue in four lines on the title page: "BILL! | BEST FROM | RAY BRADBURY | OCT. 1966". First edition is so stated on the copyright page. Condition is good plus in a good plus dust jacket. The first edition’s pale green cloth binding proved notoriously prone to toning and discoloration. This copy is square and tight with sharp corners and only trivial wrinkling to spine ends, but nonetheless modestly toned to the spine and also showing some mild staining to the boards, primarily at the midpoint of the spine and the rear cover. The contents are clean with no previous ownership marks apart from the author’s signature. Trivial spotting appears confined to a few spots on the fore and bottom edges and at the lower rear endpaper verso and pastedown. The dust jacket is complete, with no appreciable loss and retaining the original "$2.50" price on the upper front flap. The spine is modestly toned and we note mild wear to extremities, hinges, and flap folds. The chief detraction is spotting and staining to the jacket verso, which permeated the jacket and is visible primarily on the white rear panel and flaps. Fortunately, the hues and design of the jacket’s spine and front face make the staining unobtrusive. The dust jacket is now protected beneath a removable, archival quality clear cover. The Martian Chronicles was Bradbury’s first major work, a collection of short stories, some of which had been previously published … [Cliquez ci-dessous pour une description complète]

The front and back cover paintings measure roughly 8" x 10" while each of the 7 interior paintings measures 7" x 8" on the same size 8" x 10" illustration board. This set of 9 LOVELY original watercolour and gouache paintings were used to illustrate the Children's book "TEA-TIME" published by the Birn Brothers circa 1940's?-1950's consisting of the front cover of the book, the back cover (see last scan) along with 7 of the 8 interior color plates. Ernest Hemingway
London: Jonathan Cape, 1950. The first chapter opens on the last day in the life of protagonist, Colonel Richard Cantwell, who is duck hunting in Trieste. Much of the novel is a protracted flashback, with Cantwell thinking about a young Venetian woman, Renata, and about his life as a soldier during the war. In Italy, Hemingway had met a young woman, Adriana Ivancich, with whom he was infatuated and he used as the model for the female character in the novel. A central theme in the novel is death and how one faces death. Ernest Hemingway (1899 - 1961) was an American author and journalist. His economical and understated style had a strong influence on 20th-century fiction, while his life of adventure and his public image influenced later generations. CONDITION In a green cloth binding with an embossed cover design. Externally smart. Some light shelfwear to the boards, with light discolouration to the extremities and some sunning to spine. Dustwrapper generally sound with some wear and browning to the extremities and some loss to spine. Internally firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean throughout. Overall Condition: Very Good Good. [Attributes: First Edition]

Patricia Highsmith
USA: Harper Bros, 1950. Books has light corner bumps and minimal scuffing. Interior is clean and bright without foxing or previous owner additions. The DJ is a facsimile without issues. A beauty of an author's first book! For consideration, offered now is a very rare first printing of Patricia Highsmith's debut novel, "Strangers On A Train," which she inscribed on the ffep. This excellent copy is bright, clean, unmarked and free of foxing, loose or torn pages. Very few of the first printings remain in the marketplace simply because the book was a debut novel by an unknown writer. Ironically, the success of the work enabled the author to give up the low-pay magazine market and to write bestsellers full time. This copy comes from a smoke-free environment and ships to you postpaid well padded and tucked in a sturdy carton. A highly-desirable collectible. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Kyle Crichton
Doubleday & Co. Book boards are straight, unmarked, undamaged, no bumps or scuffs. Dust jacket unclipped ($3.00) with only minimal rubbing, chipping. (See scans). Book does have a faint musty smell. For your consideration, offered here is a very rare true first printing of Kyle Crichton's 1950 bio on the zany Marx Brothers, who signed above their line drawing image on the main title page. Although this beautiful copy is nearly 70 years old, it is close to mint-like in its well-saved condition. It is from a collection belonging to a film buff and has been stored in a closed bookcase in a smoke and pet-free enviroment for decades. It is doubtful another copy in equal condition will ever hit the market. Examine the scans to confirm our enthusiasm. Shipment by Priority Mail is gratis. Nabokov, Vladimir
First printing of this edition, and first printing in paperback of Nabokov's first novel, originally titled "Kamera Obscura." INSCRIBED by Nabokov for publisher Kurt Enoch: "Vladimir Nabokov / IV.1950." From the Kurt Enoch collection, with a letter of provenance included. Apart from the rarity of the signature, the book was inscribed Nabokov a full five years before "Lolita" was published by the Olympia Press in Paris, propelling him to international fame. Originally published 23 years prior to his controversial masterpiece "Lolita," "Laughter in the Dark" is something of a study for that book, about a middle-aged man's sexual fixation on a much younger woman, and how the ways they use each other lead to their downfalls. Kurt Enoch was the founder of Signet Books and a publisher whose desire was to bring great literature and genre fiction out of the libraries and into the hands of readers. Matisse, Henri
Paris: Ateliers Mourlot Freres for Editions la Revue Verve, 1950. A warm, vibrant and joyful celebration of life - Henri Matisse celebrates the elusive mystique of medieval love poetry in this magnificent portfolio of one hundred lithographed sheets. The troubadour poet, Charles d'Orleans, lived from 1394 -1465 and is believed by some to have been the sender of the first Valentine's Day gift. His poems are veiled yet alluring, a perfect source for modern artistic inspiration. Matisse worked upon this magnificent livre d'artiste in 1943: it was printed some years later by the master fine art lithographer, Fernand Mourlot, in 1950. (Mourlot is credited with reintroducing lithography as an art form in the twentieth-century, and his studio in Paris was frequented by Picasso, Chagall, Dali and others.) This is a beautiful portfolio, filled with fresh and spontaneous decorative patterns based on the tapestry tradition of the royal fleur-de-lis. Significantly, there is no letterpress as Matisse wrote the poems by hand for the lithographic printing process. The work is remarkable for its confidence and youthful vigour, created by Matisse at seventy-three years of age. 'Poems de Charles d'Orleans' combines the spontaneity and irreverence of a modern artist with the high chivalry and mystical love poetry of the Middle Ages. Limited edition of 1,200 copies signed by Henri Matisse: lithographic portfolio of one hundred sheets measuring 410 mm x 265 mm., with additional limitation leaf; in excellent condition within the original folding decorated wrappers, with the publisher's slipcase … [Cliquez ci-dessous pour une description complète]

Eliot, T.S
Faber & Faber, London. First edition of Eliot's most popular play published in his lifetime. Octavo, original cloth. Association copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper to his niece, "Theodora Eliot Smith from T.S. Eliot." Near fine in near fine dust jacket. A nice association. The Cocktail Party was written while Eliot was a visiting scholar at the Institute for Advanced Study in 1948. It was first performed at the Edinburgh Festival in 1949. In 1950 the play had successful runs in London and New York theaters (the Broadway production received the 1950 Tony Award for Best Play.) It focuses on a troubled married couple who, through the intervention of a mysterious stranger, settle their problems and move on with their lives. The play starts out seeming to be a light satire of the traditional British drawing room comedy. As it progresses, however, the work becomes a darker philosophical treatment of human relations. As in many of Eliot's works, the play uses absurdist elements to expose the isolation of the human condition. In another recurring theme of Eliot's plays, the Christian martyrdom of the mistress character is seen as a sacrifice that permits the predominantly secular life of the community to continue."An authentic modern masterpiece" (New York Post). "Eliot really does portray real-seeming characters. He cuts down his poetic effects to the minimum, and then finally rewards us with most beautiful poetry" (Stephen Spender). New York: Bell Telephone Laboratories. Condition: Near Fine. First Separate Edition. 4to., pp. 7; original printed wrappers; ex-library stamp (dated Nov 21, 1950); perforations for ring binder as issued; near fine. First separate issue, October 1950. Originally published in the Bell System Technical Journal Vol. 29, pp. 343-349, July 1950. The Bell Telephone System Technical Publications Monograph series was primarily distributed to libraries that subscribed to the series. Stapled wraps. "In discussing the memory requirements of a telephone exchange, Shannon derived a 'Separate memory" formula, M=2SlogN, which he interpreted in terms of information theory" (Origins of Cyberspace 883, quoting Shannon 1993, no. 56). First printed in the July 1950 issue of the Bell System Technical Journal, this Monograph was issued in October 1950. Often erroneously referred to as offprints, the Monograph series was not published in most cases contemporaneously with the original publications. The series also included work by Bell System employees that were first published outside the Bell System umbrella. They are, however, usually the first separate publication, and are thus highly prized by collectors since offprints in the traditional sense were not produced in the Bell System as far as we are aware. Shannon Collected Papers #56 referring to the Bell System Technical Journal (not Monograph) issue. [Attributes: First Edition]
