        De Rousseau à Jean-Jacques *

Mermod, Lausanne 9.1950. TOPPER TOY’S DUMBO SPILL

[Monsterbeskyttet: Kaj Kjeldsen], No date, circa 1950. The game board with an impressive pop-up circus tent featuring Dumbo in the center preparing for his famed “burning building leap” and decorated with colorful characters from the movie. Included game pieces featuring colourful characters and an instruction sheet in Danish. 19 by 19 inches, fold-up cardboard game board, and a colorful pictorially decorated paper-board box containing the Dumbo playing pieces, a die, and an instruction sheet. One sheet of playing instructions in Danish. The pop up board is in lovely condition, some wear to the small box of playing pieces. A WELL-PRESERVED DISNEY GAME and one featuring one of the studio’s most beloved animal characters. Dumbo is of course the baby elephant who could fly. Although the rules are in Danish, the game is fairly simple to figure out and appears to be essentially complete. The main attraction here however is the fabulous pop-up circus scene which serves as a centerpiece to the playing-board.

        Strangers on a Train

New York; Harper and Brothers 1950., 1950. Thriller. FIRST EDITION. Author's debut novel. Publisher's hardcovers in the striking pictorial dust wrapper by Irv Doktor. Book is fine, but for a touch of glue browning though paper at joint. Wrapper is particularly clean with a couple of tiny nicks and a hint of the inevitable fading to purple spine, but still better than most. Overall and near fine, unsophisticated copy of a key thriller. An important suspense title; a landmark psychological thriller concerning 'swapped' identities which was famously filmed by Alfred Hitchcock; from the moment that he constructs a perfect alibi, Guy Haines is trapped in a nightmare of shared guilt and an insidious merging of his personality with that of his conspirator.

'Relative State' Formulation of Quantum Mechanics.Lancaster: American Institute of Physics, 1957. First edition.

A fine copy, in original wrappers, of this famous paper in which Everett first formulated his 'many-worlds interpretation' of quantum mechanics. <br/><br/> "The Many-Worlds Interpretation (MWI) is an approach to quantum mechanics according to which, in addition to the world we are aware of directly, there are many other similar worlds which exist in parallel at the same space and time. The existence of the other worlds makes it possible to remove randomness and action at a distance [e.g., the EPR paradox] from quantum theory and thus from all physics." (Stanford Encyclopedia).<br/><br/> "In the early 1950's, a graduate student at Princeton University, Hugh Everett, puzzled over the Copenhagen interpretation and the magical collapse of the wave function, and decided that it made more sense to treat each outcome of every possible quantum event as existing in a real world. In the classic example of Schrödinger's cat, this means that if the experiment really were carried out, the Universe would divide into two worlds, in one of which the experimenter opened the box to find a dead cat, and in the other of which the experimenter opened the box to find a live cat. Encouraged by his thesis supervisor, John Wheeler, Everett developed his idea into a fully worked-out interpretation of quantum theory, and showed that the assumption that all of the quantum possibilities are real leads to exactly the same predictions for the outcome of experiments as the Copenhagen interpretation... Everett's work was published in the journal <i>Reviews of Modern Physics</i> in 1957 alongside a paper by Wheeler drawing attention to it [also contained in the offered issue]" (John Gribben). In recent years Everett's theory has gained an increasingly strong following in the scientific community (led, most notably, by David Deutsch) as a viable alternative that corrects some of the inherent inconsistencies of the Copenhagen interpretation.<br/><br/> For a detailed account see: Mehra & Rechenberg, <i>The Historical Development of Quantum Theory</i>, vol. 6, pp. 1224-28.. In: Reviews of Modern Physics, vol. 29, no. 3, pp. 454-62, the entire issue in original orange printed wrappers offered here, upper right corner very slightly bumped, otherwise a fine and fresh copy.         Transparent Traitor

London - Macdonald and Co 1950 - A scarce first edition of this crime novel by Francis Gerard. 'Sir Digby Vane-Torrington, the great actor-manager, had made too many enemies for the good of any one man. He had a bad reputation with women, and he detested his own sons. When after his retirement he decided to give a private performance of Romeo and Juliet, he invited all the London critics and numerous other notabilities, including Sir John Meredith. It was a sensational evening, from the rise of the curtain to the shot which followed its fall. This is one of Francis Gerard's most unusual tales, for the issue is not so much one of 'who did the murder' as 'why and how did the victim come to fill his role' It is top-grade story-telling from beginning to end'. Cover design by Stein. Condition: In a cloth covered binding. Externally, smart and bright with very slight fading at head and tail of spine. Dustwrapper is generally clean with slight curling. A number of small closed tears have been repaired with tape on the reverse, and the dustwrapper is protected with Brodart wraps. Internally, firmly bound, bright and generally clean. Overall: VERY GOOD INDEED with a VERY GOOD dustwrapper [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Strangers on a Train

New York: Harper & Brothers, 1950. First edition of the author&#39;s first book. Octavo, original cloth. Light wear to the spine tips, else near fine in a very good dust jacket that shows some of the endemic fading to the spine panel. Inscribed by the author. Housed in a custom quarter morocco clamshell box. Very rare signed and inscribed. For eliciting the menace that lurks in familiar surroundings, there&#39;s no one like Patricia Highsmith" (Time). The success of Strangers on a Train allowed Highsmith to quit "hack" writing for magazines and devote her energies full time to fiction. "Her books evoke a quiet tension, a persistent apprehension, which is all the more terrifying and suspenseful for its aura of plausibility" (Vinson, 643-44). It was adapted as a film in 1951, directed by Alfred Hitchcock, starring Farley Granger and Ruth Roman.
