Improvisations: Spring Fantasia Masquerade Ball. May 19, 1950

New York: Artists Equity Association, 1950. Slim folio, original spiral-bound color lithographic pictorial wrappers, with fifty-two original lithographs by various artists on colored laid paper. Expert repair to upper wrapper. Limited first edition program, one of two thousand copies, commemorating the 1950 Spring Fantasia, the first annual fundraising masquerade ball for Artists Equity Association. AEA was founded in 1947 to advance the economic interests of American artists in the face of dwindling government support for the arts after the Second World War. In its efforts to enlist private and institutional backing, the Association solicited program advertisements from a host of businesses large and small, with member artists supplying original artwork. While predictably showcasing many galleries, museums and art supply shops, the program also features ads for Welch's Grape Juice, Fortune Magazine, the Chrysler Corporation, Revlon, the Russian Tea Room, and Encyclopedia Britannica. Contributing artists include Milton Avery, Max Beckmann, Chaim Gross, Hans Hofmann, Leo Lionni, and Ben Shahn, among others: "The member-artists who illustrated this journal were selected by the advertisers and were given complete freedom of expression. Each page was designed by the artist directly on the litho plate, thus making this a collection of original lithographs." The spirited program notes, together with the sponsor and patron listings, reflect the midcentury merger of art, business and New York society. A near-fine copy of a fragile production, complete with fifty-two original lithographs.

        Promethee

1950. MOORE, Henry. Prométhée. By Goethe, translated by André Gide. [2], 64, [6] pp. Illustrated with 16 colour lithographs by Henry Moore, including the cover and title lithographs, three capital letters, three tailpieces and eight full-page lithographs. Folio, 318 x 223 mm, loose as issued in the original publisher's illustrated wrappers and cardboard folding box. Paris: Henri Jonquières, 1950. |~||~||~||~| |~||~| Prométhée is the first illustrated book by the noted English artist and sculptor, Henry Moore, and it is regarded as his magnum opus as a book-illustrator. "Although the subject matter was Greek mythology, some of Moore's illustrations refer to the great series of drawings that he created based on wartime Londoners huddled in underground shelters during the blitz" (Johnson, Artists' Books in the Modern Era 1870-2000, p. 208). Not only does it contain the evocative lithographs by Moore printed by Mourlot Frères of Paris, but the book is beautifully printed, resulting from a commission for a project originating at the Imprimerie Nationale using the Grandjean Romain du Roi type, originally cut in 1692. The total edition was 183 copies all on Marais, of which this is number 4 of 8 copies, accompanied by two suites in two states of the 6 lithographs for the title and initials, and an extra lithograph of the cover, all on Malacca de Lana paper. The original drawing and the suites for the full-page plates are no longer present. Slight wear to the covers and extremities of box, the book itself is immaculate. The Artist and the Book 211. From Manet to Hockney 124. Cramer, Henry Moore: the Graphic Work 18-32. Johnson, Artists' Books in the Modern Era 1870-2000, No. 129.

THE COMPLETE POEMS OF ROBERT FROST

New York: Limited Editions Club, 1950. No. 198 OF 1,500 COPIES, SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR, ILLUSTRATOR, AND DESIGNER-PRINTER n. Hardcover. 273 x 189 mm (10 3/4 x 7 7/16"). Two volumes. No. 198 OF 1,500 COPIES, SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR, ILLUSTRATOR, AND DESIGNER-PRINTER. In the publisher's blue denim binding, gilt-stamped leather spine labels, ORIGINAL GLASSINE DUST JACKETS. In the publisher's (somewhat worn) slipcase. With 10 wood engravings by Thomas W. Nason, comprised of two title vignettes and eight section headpieces. With 8-leaf pamphlet, "Thomas W. Nason 1889-1971," and "Monthly Letter of the Limited Editions Club" concerning this title laid in. Quarto-Millenary 208. Glassine with small chip at spine head of first volume and with other very minor imperfections, but A VERY FINE COPY, entirely fresh and clean inside and out. This is an imaginatively bound edition attractively designed and printed by the great Bruce Rogers and illustrated by poet-engraver Thomas W. Nason (1889-1971) in the tradition of Thomas Bewick. The straightforward, unadorned style of Frost (1874-1963) is echoed in the simplicity of Nason's small but evocative compositions as well as in the restrained design of Rogers (1870-1957). These three sons of New England have combined their talents to produce an essentially American book--fine and well made, but without airs or pretensions. One could not reasonably expect a copy to be in much better condition than the present one.

        The Invisible Glass

New York: Greenberg. (1950). First. First edition. Octavo. Slight bumping and wear to spine ends, else about fine in rubbed and price-clipped very good dustwrapper with a few small nicks and tears. Laid in is a Typed Letter Signed ("Loren Wahl") to Dr. Noel J. Cortes dated in 1951, responding to Cortes' inquiry of the publisher inquiring about purchasing the manuscript of this novel; Wahl offers to discuss it with him. Wahl published a second novel in 1959, Confetti For Gino, under the name Lorenzo Madalena. Like John Horne Burns' The Gallery, The Invisible Glass is set among American service personnel serving in Italy during World War II. A doomed love story which breaks three taboos: love between men, love across the racial divide, and love between an officer and an enlisted man. Contemporary critics were dismissive of the novel's gay content, preferring instead to commend it (where they commended it at all) for its sympathetic and insightful handling of the role played by black servicemen during the war. A better than usual example of a very scarce title, one much more candid in its treatment of homosexuality than The Gallery, which it resembles. Slide, Lost Gay Novels, p. 46. .

BENJAMIN GRAHAM - THE INTELLIGENT INVESTOR - FIRST EDITION 3rd Printing w/ "A-Z"

Harper & Brothers: New York, 1950. THE INTELLIGENT INVESTOR - A Book of Practical Counsel, by BENJAMIN GRAHAM. Published by Harper & Brothers Publishers, New York. FIRST EDITION, likely Third Printing. "Copyright 1949" is the only date stated on the copyright page, and there is the letter code "A-Z" at the bottom of the copyright page. Though Harper & Brothers usually stated "First Edition" in its books at this time, this was one of the exceptions; i.e. it did not state "first edition" but instead simply used its letter code for identification. It is presumed that the code "D-Y" (April 1949) was the first printing, with a second 1949 printing being lettered "K-Y" (November 1949). This "A-Z" (January, 1950) is, I believe, the third printing. You can easily find Harper & Brothers Letter Codes online. Hardcovers, 5.5" x 8.5", 276 pages. Original NAVY BLUE CLOTH COVERED BOARDS with GILT TITLING TO THE SPINE. and Harper & Brothers blind stamped colophon on the front cover.. This is the same binding as the First Printing (later printings had different bindings). NO DUSTJACKET. Condition: The covers have some wear to their spine ends and corner tips, rubbing to their folds and edges, and some rubbing to the spine, but are still solid and doing their job well; there is a bb-size stain to the top page edges (page edges of the closed book); there is a previous owner's name/address/phone rubber-stamped at the bottom of the front pastedown; there is clear tape reinforcement neatly applied to the gutter edge of the title-page and its facing page, and to the dedication page and the facing "Contents" page - the tape does not touch text, it extends for approx. 1/4" along the gutter of all 4 pages; there is underlining in red pencil to sections of 24 pages; there is NO noticeable foxing or toning, the pages are bright and clear. Overall a complete, solid, presentable, used copy. VERY RARE, EARLY "A-Z" (January 1950) PRINTING of this BIBLE of STOCK MARKET INVESTING. The only earlier printing I found for sale was a "K-Y" (November 1949 - probable second printing), selling for $6,500 with DJ. As of this writing, I found several LATER (i.e. not as scarce) but still early printings for sale online, including a "C-A" (March 1951) printing for $3,500 with dj, a "C-A" (March 1951) printing for $1,950 without dj; (please note that both of these "C-A" editions have the much less desirable LATER BINDING); and a "D-C" (April 1953) printing for $2,022 with no dj, and also with the later binding. As BENJAMIN GRAHAM would say, be an intelligent investor and do your own research! And as I would add, Have Fun doing it! Good
