        Mr. Midshipman Hornblower.

Boston; Little Brown and Company. 1950 - First US Edition. 8vo. Publisher's blue cloth, very good indeed, lightly worn to the extremities and with some slight edgewear and discolouration. In a good only dustwrapper with significant creasing and loss to the spine panel. This copy is inscribed to Forester's wife, Dorothy, on the front flyleaf and the pastedown bears the bookplate of the Forester and Troughton Smith archive. Internally clean and sharp. A splendid association albeit with the dustwrapper in the condition we have come to expect from the titles purchased from the family collection. Housed in a tailor made leather spined clamshell box.         Poemes de Charles D'Orleans

One of the original sets of 1200 lithograph copies of Matisse?s original, which was done in color pencil and crayon. The text is a selection of Charles? poems that Matisse wrote out in hand in French. He then added fleur de lis decorations and hand drawn borders, all in various colors. Slightly more than 100 pages and more than 50 original lithographs, loose in sets of four pages each, housed in illustrated wrappers. A beautiful set with only slight offsetting on some internal pages. The acetate protector on the wrappers is yellowed and has a closed tear bottom left of front cover. Signed by Matisse in pencil on the limitation page. This is copy number 778. The protective cardboard box is in Poor condition, soiled and faded, with splits at the seams and one long, folding flap detached. Even though the number produced was large, intact copies are quite rare ?" presumably because many copies were broken and sold separately as single Matisse lithographs. This production is widely considered one of the most important illustrated books ever done. Included is a note from M. J. Royer, Antiquarian Bookseller and Gallery of Fine and Applied Arts, Los Angeles, to "Mrs. Tarr" stating that he has located this copy in Europe. The note is dated Dec. 4, 1958; additionally there is an Invoice for the purchase dated 14 Feb. ?59. Special shipping will be required at extra cost.

BENJAMIN GRAHAM - THE INTELLIGENT INVESTOR - FIRST EDITION 3rd Printing w/ "A-Z

New York: Harper & Brothers, 1950. 1st Edition 3rd Printing. Hardcover. Good. THE INTELLIGENT INVESTOR - A Book of Practical Counsel, by BENJAMIN GRAHAM. Published by Harper & Brothers Publishers, New York. FIRST EDITION, likely Third Printing. "Copyright 1949" is the only date stated on the copyright page, and there is the letter code "A-Z" at the bottom of the copyright page. Though Harper & Brothers usually stated "First Edition" in its books at this time, this was one of the exceptions; i.e. it did not state "first edition" but instead simply used its letter code for identification. It is presumed that the code "D-Y" (April 1949) was the first printing, with a second 1949 printing being lettered "K-Y" (November 1949). This "A-Z" (January, 1950) is, I believe, the third printing. You can easily find Harper & Brothers Letter Codes online. Hardcovers, 5.5" x 8.5", 276 pages. Original NAVY BLUE CLOTH COVERED BOARDS with GILT TITLING TO THE SPINE. and Harper & Brothers blind stamped colophon on the front cover.. This is the same binding as the First Printing (later printings had different bindings). NO DUSTJACKET. Condition: The covers have some wear to their spine ends and corner tips, rubbing to their folds and edges, and some rubbing to the spine, but are still solid and doing their job well; there is a bb-size stain to the top page edges (page edges of the closed book); there is a previous owner's name/address/phone rubber-stamped at the bottom of the front pastedown; there is clear tape reinforcement neatly applied to the gutter edge of the title-page and its facing page, and to the dedication page and the facing "Contents" page - the tape does not touch text, it extends for approx. 1/4" along the gutter of all 4 pages; there is underlining in red pencil to sections of 24 pages; there is NO noticeable foxing or toning, the pages are bright and clear. Overall a complete, solid, presentable, used copy. VERY RARE, EARLY "A-Z" (January 1950) PRINTING of this BIBLE of STOCK MARKET INVESTING. The only earlier printing I found for sale was a "K-Y" (November 1949 - probable second printing), selling for $6,500 with DJ. As of this writing, I found several LATER (i.e. not as scarce) but still early printings for sale online, including a "C-A" (March 1951) printing for $3,500 with dj, a "C-A" (March 1951) printing for $1,950 without dj; (please note that both of these "C-A" editions have the much less desirable LATER BINDING); and a "D-C" (April 1953) printing for $2,022 with no dj, and also with the later binding. As BENJAMIN GRAHAM would say, be an intelligent investor and do your own research! And as I would add, Have Fun doing it!

Pabst Blue Ribbon Draft Beer. Transporting, Storing, Delivering, Dispensing How Pabst Blue Ribbon Beer is made; Fundamentals of Merchandising; Your Company. A Brief History of the Origin and Growth of the Pabst Brewing Company - Salesman's sample catalogue with samples of brewing materials.

Milwaukee, WI & Chicago, IL: Pabst Sales Company, Pabst Brewing Company, 1946-1950 - Quarto, 17 parts bound in a singlevolume. Original black morocco-grained cloth post binder, rounded corners, embossed gilt lettering and company logo with Pabst Blue Ribbon on front cover. Minor shelfwear, slight fraying to outer edge of the sample board, remains a very good copy. Numerous illustrations, diagrams, tables, several colour plates, 3 of them large folding, 1 colour-lithograph plate for Pabst Brewing materials, mounted on thick board with linen hinges, die-cut holes creating small round display windows in the board, and samples for malt, hops, grits & yeast inserted into the holes with glassine window covers, one of which is a just little damaged, 4 loosely inserted Pabst Sales Company memos from Astrup & Swan dated 1949-1951 First edition of this unusual and uncommon - no copies traced on OCLC - Pabst Blue Ribbon Company salesman's sample catalogue and advertising manual. Divided into several bulletins, which were to be continually updated by the Pabst Brewing sales force and which detail the brewing process, Pabst operations, how to place beer cases on the floor, what kind of signage needed to be located in their prospective selling location, a detailed history of the company, and much more. One of the large folding colour diagrams details the brewing process in a colour cut-away view of a Pabst Brewery detailing the innovations by Pabst, including the first use of mash filters in America, sterile air in connection with large open coolers, bottom fermentation yeast for brewing lager beer, sterile liquefying of fermentation carbon dioxide, market beer in cans nationally, and high pressure speed bottle filters. Pabst had originated the use of a blue ribbon tag to be affixed to each bottle or beer in 1882 in order identify their brew. By 1889 they were advertising this blue ribbon, and promoting it as a "Select" brand. Of special interest is the wonderful sample leaf with its original period samples offers an invaluable historical reference for the brewing ingredients and processes in post-World War II America. From collection of Robert Horner, former regional sales agent for Pabst who fortunately ignored the directives to destroy the earlier portions of the manual.

        Principia Mathematica

Cambridge: Cambridge University Press,, 1950. 3 volumes, octavo. Original blue cloth, spines lettered in gilt. With the printed dust jackets. Spines rolled and very slightly bumped and faded at extremities. A very good set in the dust jackets with sunned spines and light toning towards a few edges. Second edition, third impression. The first edition of Principia Mathematica, "the best-known work in 20th-century logic" (Ency. Brit.), appeared in 1910?-13 in a lopsided publication: 750 copies of the first volume in 1910; only 500 each of the later two volumes. The second edition, the first uniform iteration, was published in 1925 with revisions and additions produced solely by Russell, which introduced a new system of logic influenced by both Wittgenstein and Frank Ramsey. A smart set.

No Highway in the Sky [No Highway] (Original screenplay for the 1951 film)

Los Angeles: Twentieth Century-Fox, 1950. Final Shooting script for the 1951 film, here under its working title, "No Highway." Profusely annotated by a studio secretary on the inside rear wrapper, over time, regarding at least eight script revisions, with dates ranging from 10/4/50 to 11/13/50. Based on the 1948 novel by Nevil Shute. The second pairing of Jimmy Stewart and Marlene Dietrich, after their splash together in "Destry Rides Again" (1939). Theodore Honey is an aeronautical engineer being sent to Labrador from London to examine the wreckage of a new passenger plane designed by his company. His theory is that the planes are susceptible to metal fatigue after a specific amount of time in the air. The absent minded Honey boards the Reindeer class plane and only realizes that this plane is due to fail in the next few hours after the plane is airborne. He decides to warn the crew and creates an incident regardless of whether he is right or wrong. A somewhat obscure and much underappreciated drama. Goldenrod studio wrappers, noted as Final Shooting Script on the front wrapper, rubber-stamped production No. 2459. Distribution page present, with receipt removed. 172 leaves, mimeograph, with blue and pink revision pages throughout. Pages Near Fine, wrapper Very Good, internally bound with three gold brads.

        Seventy Cantos [Signed]

Faber & Faber, London 1950 - A Fine copy of the first edition, first printing (pushing to the spine ends -- otherwise Fine), in a Very Good dust jacket (spine sunned and with wear to the spine ends, small chips to the ends of each flap fold, small tape repairs to the interior at/near the spine panel ends), SIGNED BY EZRA POUND on the half-title, WITH POUND'S DRAWING BELOW HIS SIGNATURE (an appropriate and notable drawing by Pound as the Cantos contain Chinese characters). This first English collected edition presents Cantos that previously appeared under the Faber imprint in four separate volumes (A Draft of XXX Cantos; A Draft of Cantos XXXI - XLI; The Fifth Decad of Cantos; and Cantos LII-LXXI). During World War II, Faber was unable to keep all four installments in print and -- after the War ended -- rather than reprint the separate volumes that they had been unable to supply, Faber determined to collect all four installments in this volume. While titled "Seventy Cantos", the volume in fact contains seventy-one Cantos (thus explaining the Roman numerals "LXXI" above the title on the dust jacket's front panel). This collected volume shows some textual differences between it and the four separate volumes from which it was compiled, which differences can be detected because the emendations and corrections are in a type slightly lighter than the type of the original text. A project begun by Pound at age 30 and on which he did not stop working on until his death in 1972, Pound originally intended the Poem to contain 100 cantos. Eventually a few more were written, with Canto CXVI being the last canto completed by Pound. Although Pound died leaving the Poem incomplete, one finds in this volume the majority of the uncompleted Poem, a work regarded as one of the most important Poems of the 20th Century. Signed copies of the earlier volumes contributing to this collected edition are quite scarce, and signed copies of this collected edition are as scarce as hen's teeth. A Fine copy in a Very Good dust jacket, of one of the MOST IMPORTANT POEMS WRITTEN IN THE MODERN ERA, SIGNED BY EZRA POUND AND ILLUSTRATED WITH HIS SYMBOL BENEATH HIS SIGNATURE.         Portrait of Marilyn Monroe

Ed Clark 1950 - Hollywood icon Marilyn Monroe at the beginning of her career. Signed by the photographer in silver ink. Ed Clark was a top photographer for Life magazine in the 1940s, 50s, and 60s. In 1950 he received a call from a friend at 20th Century Fox wondering if he wanted to photograph “a hot tomato,” the little-known 24 year-old actress Marilyn Monroe. Her film career had just begun to gain momentum: three months earlier, Monroe had appeared as a crooked lawyer’s girlfriend in The Asphalt Jungle. Two months later, she had a small role as an aspiring starlet in All About Eve. In a 1999 interview, Clark recalled, “She was almost unknown then, so I was able to spend a lot of time shooting her.” “We’d go out to Griffith Park [in Los Angeles] and she’d read poetry. I sent several rolls to LIFE in New York, but they wired back, ‘Who the hell is Marilyn Monroe?’” Printed later by Clark. Ektacolor print. 14 x 11 in. Minor faults in the negative. Fine.         Marco Polo Fall collection 1950

[Los Angeles]: Helen of California. 1950. "4to, 42 leaves, mostly printed on rectos only on various color paper, each with a fashion design by ""Helen"" and each with accompanying text; full-page ""fabric story"" incorporporating a printed tree on which are applied various cool woolen samples in the shape of hearts (and a bow-tie) (1 thumnail-size sample missing); one mounted illustration within a hand- applied frame, and another cut-out (possibly not original) mimicking one of the designs; comb-bound in original green suede textured wrappers printed in red, and accompanied by 3 sample cards of ""color harmonies,"" with 12, 14 and 18 mounted color samples of woolen yarn; all in all, very good. Wonderful fashion catalogue filled with designs by ""Helen of California"" and based on the 14th century designs of Marco Polo. The designer details how her Fall 1950 Marco Polo fashions emphasize the Basic Dress Plus, with her designs accentuating a slim, straight silhouette, while highlighting ajn Oriental line inthe shoulder, a mandarin collar, pagoda peplum, Hindu sari, and other elements borrowed from descriptions of costume made by Marco Polo. These include fashions in wool such as the Aladdin (a worsted wool spiked with silk jacquard taffeta dress); the Siamese Dancer (dress of worsted wool crepe with long and pointed sleeves, a stiletto slim skirt, and turned-back shoulder flanges); the Saracen (a long, side-swept silhouette one-piece with a velvet hat), and many others. Gudgell worked as a fashion and costume designer in L.A. in the 1930s, moved to Minneapolis during World War II, and then returned to the L.A. area. Her ""Helen of California"" label was popular until the endof the 1950s. The color wool yarn sample cards and harmony chart offer an excellent example of the color palate balance intended."

Reflections in a Golden Eye., Introduction by Tennessee Williams. The New Classis Series

For Elizabeth* / with my love / Carson". Elizabeth ist Elizabeth Bowen - Elizabeth Dorothe Cole Bowen (* 7. Juni 1899 in Dubli - + 22. Carson McCullers (* 19. Februar 1917 in Columbus/USA - + 29. 1946 erschien The Member of the Wedding. 1947 erlitt McCullers zwei Schlaganfälle; der zweite lähmte sie linksseitig. 1948 versuchte sie sich umzubringen und wurde in New York in ein Krankenhaus eingewiesen. 1950 fand die Uraufführung des Stücks The Member of the Wedding in New York statt, das noch im selben Jahr den New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award für das beste neue Stück erhielt. 1951 erschien die Novelle The Ballad of the Sad Café. 1953 gab es eine erneute Ehekrise, die zum Suizid ihres Mannes führte. 1955 hielt sich McCullers mit Tennessee Williams für einige Zeit in Key West auf, wo sie unter anderem an Theaterversionen von The Ballad of the Sad Café und The Square Root of Wonderful arbeitete. Letzteres wurde 1957 in New York uraufgeführt; die Resonanz fiel jedoch gemischt aus. 1961 erschien der Roman Clock Without Hands. McCullers war zu dieser Zeit bereits meist an den Rollstuhl gefesselt (Wikipedia) Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 246 [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

        I, Robot

New York: Gnome Press, Inc.. (1950). First. First edition, wrappered issue, or possibly second printing (see additional information below). Pages browned, two small chips to the wrappers, a very good or a little better copy. One of reportedly 2500 copies (we have also heard the figure of just 200 copies from another source, which seems to be discredited) of the first edition sheets bound up by the publisher in wrappers duplicating the dustjacket art. The intention and publication history of this variant is disputed: it was done either as an "Armed Services Edition" or as a short-lived experiment in paperback publishing. The publisher also issued three other titles thusly, but quickly abandoned the project. One source asserts that these were reprinted in 1951 from the original printing plates (retaining the first edition statement). At any rate this is by far rarer than the hardcover issue of the first edition. Basis, or more properly inspiration, for the 2004 film directed by Alex Proyas and featuring Will Smith, Bridget Moynahan, and Alan Tudyk. A rarity, the fragility of the construction assured that few of the copies survived. .

        Seventy Cantos [Signed]

London: Faber & Faber, 1950. First edition. Hardcover. Fine/very good. A Fine copy of the first edition, first printing (pushing to the spine ends -- otherwise Fine), in a Very Good dust jacket (spine sunned and with wear to the spine ends, small chips to the ends of each flap fold, small tape repairs to the interior at/near the spine panel ends), SIGNED BY EZRA POUND on the half-title, WITH POUND'S DRAWING BELOW HIS SIGNATURE (an appropriate and notable drawing by Pound as the Cantos contain Chinese characters).

Frohe Weihnacht. - Illustrated Rebus Manuscript.

Vienna, ca. 1950,. 17 x 25 cm, 20 leaves written on one side only of an account-book for the years 1938-1949, rhyming verse in manuscript, heavily illustrated with ink and watercolor drawings, red clothbound.. Told and illustrated in rebus fashion, a charming post WWII Christmas greeting from Vienna to New York. Gretl Hain describes a visit from America of an old friend, Peter Deiches who had emigrated sometime around 1938. Their friendship and correspondence had been interrupted until he and his wife returned for a summer visit to the Hain family sometime around the end of the 1940s. The verses describe Deiches career outside New York City as an egg-farmer, his marriage to Margaret, an interior designer, their return to Europe with visits to the resort town Bad Gastein and then to Vienna to be reunited with the Hain family, make shopping trips to Vienna (where Margaret acquires the latest fashion and searches for antiques for her decorating business). Finally the Deiches decide to return home to America, taking their leave after a festive dinner, with Gretl promising to buy Deich a beer at the Waldorf Astoria. Hain's verses are witty and playful, and the illustrations, by Azi (signing as "Picc-azi") are both charming and professional. The final page shows Gretl with her feet in Vienna reaching across the Atlantic, with outstretched arms extending to Deiches (symbolized by two lovers' hearts) in NYC. A nice example, coming from an upper-middle class milieu, documenting in a light-hearted way the early years of the post-war economic recovery and the return of normal life and renewed friendships.Hübsches handgemaltes Album als Weihnachtsgruss aus dem Wien der Nachkriegszeit an einen ausgewanderten Freund in New York. Please notify before visiting to see a book. Prices are excl. VAT/TVA (only Switzerland) & postage.
