In a three-page draft of a speech most probably delivered at the United Nations, Abba Eban, Israel's Representative at the U.N., blames the Arab States for preventing peaceful supervision of the Holy Places in Jerusalem

New York, N.Y., c. Early 1950's. 6" x 8". "Historically important Autograph Manuscript of a speech by Abba Eban, three pages, 6"" x 8"", separate sheets of hotel stationery of The Savoy-Plaza, New York City. The Savoy-Plaza was demolished in 1964. Eban was Israel's first Representative to the United Nations. With cross-outs and additions, but not signed by Eban. In full: ""The record of the Arab Government in the Jerusalem question is as follows: -They violently opposed the Statute of Jerusalem when it was first proposed by the U.N. and made brutal destructive war upon the City in cynical disregard of its sacred associations."" Eban then writes ""This assault caused the abandonment and irrevocable,"" then crosses the phrase out, replacing it with ""and with heavy loss of life and damage to buildings old and new, religious and secular."" He continues, ""When Jerusalem obtained its political freedom through integration with Israel, proposals arose in the United Nations and in world opinion generally for establishing United Nations representation in Jerusalem for the supervision of the Holy Places. The Arab States have opposed these suggestions and are largely responsible for their not having been put into effect. At the same time, Jordan, the only Arab government with actual interests and positions in Jerusalem opposes the internationalization proposals for which other Arab governments profess tactical support. This the Arab policy has been and is - to thwart whatever proposals can effectively or justly at any time give peaceful expression to international concern for the Holy Places. In these circumstances their exploitation of the Jerusalem question for a hollow political maneuver is a shocking profanity, offensive to the City's peace and holiness. The Arab Ambassadors have publicly referred to the responsibilities of the United States in this question. In this connection the Israel Embassy merely recalls the following facts from Israel's own experience. First. The United States and Israel were unable to maintain the original internationalization plans against Arab assault and the United States in May 1948 took the lead in advocating the non-implementation of the plan. Second. The United States representative in the U.N. in November 1948 proposed that Jerusalem be integrated with the rest of Palestine. In 1949 and 1950 the United States opposed the plan for territorial internationalization in the General Assembly and Trusteeship Council. Third. The United States encouraged and supported Israel's initiative in June 1950 in proposing an international representative for the Holy Places in and outside Jerusalem."" In October, 1948, President Truman stated that ""We continue to support, within the framework of the United Nations, the internationalization of Jerusalem and the protection of the holy places in Palestine."" In 1952, the United States took the position that ""The Government of the United States has adhered and continues to adhere to the policy that there should be a special international regime for Jerusalem which will not only provide protection for the holy places but which will be acceptable to Israel and Jordan as well as the world community."" Abba Eban was Israel's first voice to the world. A brilliant and eloquent speaker and a superb orator, Eban was born in South Africa and educated at Cambridge. He became Israel's first Representative at the United Nations in 1948, and served concurrently as Ambassador to the United States from 1950 until his election to the Knesset in 1959. Abba Eban was Israel's Foreign Minister from 1966-1974. In excellent condition."

        Actuelles. Chroniques 1944-1948

[AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] first edition of the theatrical adaptation established by Albert Camus, one of the review copies service.         Thomas Merton Original Calligraphic Artwork.

Original signed artwork from Thomas Merton. In the last decade of his life, while living as a hermit-monk in dialogue with the world, Thomas Merton created a body of visual art, drawing from the Zen Buddhist tradition. When he was a student at Columbia University, Merton sought out a Hindu monk named Bramachari for counsel. The monk advised Merton to follow his own Christian tradition to find what he was most deeply looking for. A strong admirer of Gandhi, Merton also noted how Gandhi, a Hindu, had found a congenial ' second home' of sorts in the Christian Sermon on the Mount. In the 1950's Merton began exploring Buddhism, especially Zen Buddhism. He thought he found some resonance between Zen and the Desert Fathers. Merton sent a copy of his study of the Desert Fathers to Daisetsu Suzuki, the leading exponent of Zen in the west. They began a long correspondence in the late 1950's, and Suzuki's influence can be seen in Merton's artwork. Includes a letter from activist W.H. Ferry, which reads, "4/3/68 For Mary Sue Dilliard: Daisetsu Suzuki told Father Tom Merton in 1965 that the only way finally to understand Zen was to practice calligraphy. This is the result: one of Tom's earliest calligraphs. W.H. Ferry." On the Center for the Study of Democratic Institutions letterhead, which Ferry was the Vice President. Matted and framed in what looks to be the original frame, which measures 13 inches by 15 inches. Calligraphy drawing measures 9 inches by 12.5 inches. On the verso of the frame, it includes various Merton material including numerous clippings. Original artwork by Merton is exceptionally rare in the marketplace.

        The Morning Watch.

Rome: Botteghe oscure, 1950 - Octavo. Original buff wrappers, title to front cover in black. Faint spotting to wrappers, front hinge starting at head but text block sound, contents lightly toned. A very good copy. First edition, first printing. Presentation offprint, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "For Albert Brush, with warmest regard and esteem, Jim Agee, June 6, '54"; an offprint of the novella as it first appeared in the literary journal Botteghe oscure, VI. The recipient, the enigmatic Santa Monica poet Albert Brush, travelled in bohemian circles in Greenwich Village in the 1920s. He was in Paris in the early 1930s and spent most of his life moving in the artistic circles of Southern California; he appears briefly in the biographies of figures such as Christopher Isherwood and Charles Laughton. In the later 1930s he helped write Laughton's famous English adaptation of Bertold Brecht's Life of Galileo. In 1954, the time of this inscription, Agee was finishing work with Laughton on the screenplay of The Night of the Hunter (1955); it was presumably Laughton who introduced the two. Agee's novella, with its 12-year-old protagonist and atmosphere of foreboding religiosity, shares a number of themes with his screenplay for Laughton's celebrated film. [Attributes: First Edition]

Oeuvre originale

        Some Notes on No. 26

San Francisco, CA: Three Fingers Press, 1950. Soft Cover. Very Good. 48mo - over 3" - 4" tall. Book shows a publication date of 1950, but it was actually released in 1951. Handcrafted, string bound, heavy card wrappers with 14 uncut leaves upon which are mounted a number of original photographs and ephemera relating to the Virginia and Truckee Railroad's heavy Ten-Wheeler locomotive, No. 26. Very nice shape. There are over 20 original photographs and significant pieces of ephemera that "have with loving care been gathered, collated, hand set, pasted, bound up and cursed into book form . . . on the first anniversary of the demise of V & T No. 26." The book includes a signed 3-page essay about the demise of small railroads and a description of the loss of the No. 26 in an engine-house fire in 1950. Photographs include images of the train at work as well as its flaming destruction. The ephemera includes a 1876 V&T bank check, a 1878 invoice, a timetable, and a bill of lading. The author was a mining engineer and research mineralogist who worked for the Aurora Creek Gold Mining Company and at Stanford University's School of Mineral Sciences, where he published a number of scholarly articles and monographs. A rabid rail fan, Beatty focused his hobby on the railroads of Nevada and Eastern California. Although unspecified, the distribution of this work was no doubt quite limited. Very scarce. As of 2016, no examples are listed in OCLC, no auction records are reported by ABPC or Rare Book Hub, and only one other copy is for sale (for $2,000) in the trade.

        Inward Companion. Poems.

London: Faber and Faber Limited, 1950 - Octavo. Original blue cloth, titles gilt to spine direct and on red ground, fore and bottom edges untrimmed. With the dust jacket. Laid-in material detailed below. Spine toned and rolled, scattered faint mottling to cloth. A very good copy in the dust jacket with a toned and slightly chipped spine, crease along front panel top edge and a few nicks. First edition, first impression. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author "To Margaret, with love & infinite blessing from Jack, Oct 13 '50" on the front free endpaper. The recipient was Margaret Newbolt (née Duckworth), the wife of De La Mare's literary patron Henry Newbolt, who died in 1938. It was the "eager championship" of Newbolt that in 1908 secured for De La Mare a royal bounty grant of £200, a sum that encouraged him to leave his job at Anglo-American Oil, where he had spent eighteen years in the statistics department, and devote full-time himself to writing (ODNB). This copy with a superb collection of ephemera illuminating the enduring relationship between De La Mare and the Newbolt family, including: Autograph letter signed from De La Mare to Margaret Newbolt (addressed as "Ma"). Single leaf (114 × 177 mm), with De La Mare's Hill House letterhead, writing on recto and verso; three faint vertical creases from folding, excellent condition. De La Mare sympathetically expresses his concern at the health of Margaret and Henry's son Francis: "when he was with us that Sunday I thought he looked very tired & almost wished he hadn't taken the journey though it was such a joy to see him. I am hoping & praying & believing that he will soon be better Please give Margaret & Harry & Nancy my love – they know how my heart is with them in this trouble". Francis (1893-1966) married Nancy Triffit in 1921. They had two children: Peter (b. 1923) and Anne (b. 1926). Margaret was the first given name of Francis's older sister, Celia (1890-1975), and Henry was known to his friends as Harry. Typescript of "Sheep", an unpublished doggerel poem by De La Mare, with his signed holograph dedication to Peter Newbolt, Henry's grandson through his Francis, reading "To Peter, hoping that / in spite of ALL / he didn't lose his WOOL / from W. J. dlm". Single leaf (263 × 202 mm), verso blank; creased from folding, 14 mm closed tear to central transverse fold to not affecting text, very good condition. Five stanzas of four lines, beginning: "As I skipped into garden, / My heart gave a leap. / For where once was a tatie-patch / Now was all Sheep!" Peter Newbolt, "The Astonishing Memory of Walter De La Mare", journal clipping, docketed Time and Tide, 30 June 1956 (305 × 145 mm). Peter recounts how De La Mare "sent me every Christmas into well into my schooldays a large box of chocolates With each box came a card inscribed by De La Mare". He quotes one written in a similar style to De La Mare's inscription to the "Sheep" typescript: "ALL best wishes / Pies on Dishes I mean the above / And send my LOVE." Typed letter signed from J. E. L. Bashford, secretary of the Old Cliftonian Society, to Lady [Margaret] Newbolt, extensively annotated by De La Mare in pencil on the verso. Single sheet (205 × 125 mm), with the Old Cliftonian Society letterhead and dated 13th June, 1942; single transverse crease from folding, slight foxing, very good condition. Bashford informs Margaret that a plaque commemorating her husband, shown in an enclosed photograph (not present), "is being stored in the strong room under this building for the duration of the war, when it will probably be erected in the Ante Chapel. At present the School buildings are being occupied by the Army." Henry Newbolt notably celebrated his alma mater Clifton College in two of his best-remembered poems - Vitai Lampada and Clifton Close. In his note on the verso De La Mare voices reservations about the project: "There seems to be no alternative to suggesting that the design etc should be remachined [sic] - & that appears to be impracticable Who paid f [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

Doubleday & Company, Inc., Garden City, NY 1950 - Inscribed by Asimov on the front free endpaper, "For Dirce Archer, With best wishes, Isaac Asimov." Dirce Archer was a well known science fiction fan of the 1950's and 60's. Asimov's first novel. "A sentimental favorite among Asimov's fans, but significant also as a transitional step between the relatively miserly world of Golden Age pulps and the relatively lucrative world of mainstream book publication." Quoted from Barron; Anatomy of Wonder 4, 3-15. Bound in gray cloth with lettering on the spine in red. The merest hint of toning to the edges of the text block, else fine in fine and bright dust jacket illustrated by Richard Powers, Doubleday's $2.50 price present, and with just the merest hint of rubbing at the spine panel ends.
