Monaco: A La Voile Latine,, 1950. Roman. Traduit de l'Anglais par Judith Paley. Illustré par André Collot de bois gravés en couleurs et en noir. Quarto (280 × 225 mm) Sheets loose in light card wraps within pale grey card chemise in matching card slip-case as issued. Original glassine jacket on the wraps, and the suite of plates "en noir" in the original glassine sleeve. Coloured wood-engraved frontispiece, and 22 similar half-page head-pieces, tail-pieces in black and white; original pencil and water-colour drawings for two of the head-pieces window-mouted in light card and loosely inserted, together with an additional suite of the illustrations in black and white. The slip-case a little tanned, slightly rubbed and starting on the joins, spine of the chemise similarly tanned, some offsetting from the illustrations, but overall very good. First edition thus, the second French edition, limited to 950, this number 12, one of twelve copies on "pur chiffon à la forme", accompanied by two of the original drawings, signed in pencil, and a suite of the illustrations "en noir". Far from Churchill's finest hour in literary terms; "He devoted only one paragraph in My Early Life to Savrola, concluding: "I have consistently urged my friends to abstain from reading it" " (Rose, The Literary Churchill, p.68). However, this edition is widely considered to be "the most elegant of all Churchill 'A' titles" (Cohen, "The Bibliography of 'Savrola'", in Finest Hour, 74, 1992, p.33), Cohen further describing this as a "magnificently illustrated edition". And Langworth stresses its importance to collectors: "The finest presentation of Savrola Â… this magnificent edition is overlooked by many collectors because it is not in English. They are missing a great deal. No serious Churchill library is complete without it". André Collot, the artist who provided the stylish suite of illustrations for this edition - which were in the St. Augustine's Press re-issue, published in association with the Churchill Center in 2003 - was a highly thought of illustrator who worked on editions of such classics as Kipling's Jungle Book, The Three Musketeers, Letters from my Mill, and Barbusse's La Feu, but is probably best known for his sometimes quite brutal erotica. Having utterly disowned Savrola in the past, on receipt of his copy of the present edition Churchill wrote to Collot expressing himself "surprised and greatly pleased to have received the beautiful edition of my little novel of sixty years ago Â… I am glad to find it is still alive. It will have an honoured place in my library" (Finest Hour, 120, 2003, p.41). An excellent copy of the tête de tirage of this superb edition.

        Six Modern One-Act Plays

London: University of London Press 1950, 1950. FIRST EDITION, thus. SIGNED BY JOHN LENNON. Octavo, pp.160. Publisher's softcovers. Some soiling and associated reading wear. An interesting school text-book borrowed by Lennon whilst a student at Quarry Bank School, Liverpool. Lennon has signed the lending stamp to the inside cover 'J[ohn] W[inston] Lennon, IVC', and dated this '1955'. The details have been crossed through by the subsequent reader in 1961-2. This signed library book represents an especially early autograph from the future Beatle, at this time aged just 14; 'The Quarrymen' band was formed by John aged 15 and was named after the high school noted within this volume. Music aside, the subject of the book has a clear link to his later career as a dramatist; Lennon co-wrote the play 'A Spaniard In the Works' with Victor Spinetti and starred in the film 'How I Won the War'. An important item, accompanied by a statement of provenence from Paul Wane one of the world's most respected Beatles specialists.

        Dubonnet. Vin Tonique au Quinquina.

1950 1950 - Original lithographed poster. Signed A.M. Cassandre [19]32. Printed c. 1950. 66x45 cm. Printer brand cut off in lower margin. Cassandre became successful enough that with the help of partners he was able to set up his own advertising agency called Alliance Graphique, serving a wide variety of clients during the 1930s. He is perhaps best known for his posters advertising travel, for clients such as the Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits. His creations for the Dubonnet wine company were among the first posters designed in a manner that allowed them to be seen by occupants in moving vehicles. His posters are memorable for their innovative graphic solutions and their frequent denotations to such painters as Max Ernst and Pablo Picasso. In addition, he taught graphic design at the École des Arts Décoratifs and then at the École d'Art Graphique. [Wikipedia] [Attributes: Signed Copy]

LOT of 453 "UN MYSTERE" PRESSES DE LA CITE 1949-1965

PRESSES DE LA CITE 1950's - LOT of 453 UN MYSTERE French Vintage Mystery Paperbacks from PRESSES DE LA CITE issued between 1949 and 1964. The UN MYSTERE ("A MYSTERY") series from PRESSES DE LA CITE represents the best of postwar French-language Vintage Mystery Paperbacks from France. There were 1-769 numbered Mystery titles (NB: numbers 647 & 766 do not exist) issued from 1949 to 1966 along with 9 RARE pre-numbered titles issued between 1947 and 1949 with roman numerals I-IX with each book also issued with a illustrated dust jacket. These 9 were a trial run and, based on their success, the numbered series started in 1949. (NB: None of these I-IX are present in this lot.) The publisher announced on the back cover of some titles that 2 titles a month were initially issued then 4 titles reaching 6 titles a month at its peak. Most titles in this series were translated into French from then contemporary American and British writers, along with some original French writers, notably Jean BRUCE, Jean-Pierre CONTY, and Gilles MORRIS, covering all aspects of the Mystery field from Whodunits, Detective and Hard-boiled to Suspense, Thriller and Espionage. Some of the American and British authors in this specific lot include: EDWARD AARONS, WILLIAM ARD, BILL BALLINGER, BEN BENSON, OWEN CAMERON, JAMES HADLEY CHASE, PETER CHEYNEY, JONATHAN CRAIG, URSULA CURTISS, SPENCER DEAN, CARTER DICKSON, FERGUSON FINDLEY, JOHN FLAGG, RAE FOLEY, ERLE STANLEY GARDNER (also as A.A. FAIR), ANDREW GARVE, WILLIAM CAMPBELL GAULT, HARTLEY HOWARD, WILLIAM IRISH (CORNELL WOOLRICH), ADAM KNIGHT, ED LACY, JOHN ROSS MACDONALD, J.J. MARRIC (JOHN CREASEY), WHIT MASTERSON, ED McBAIN, MARGARET MILLER, WADE MILLER, ELLERY QUEEN, PATRICK QUENTIN, PETER RABE, CRAIG RICE, MICKEY SPILLANE, THOMAS WALSH, LIONEL WHITE along with many others. ERLE STANLEY GARDNER was the most prolific writer in this series with a whopping 111 titles issued, many of these are included in this lot. However, the main attraction for Vintage Paperback collectors is the interesting cover artwork. Some early covers appear to be originals, but the majority are "cover swipes" taken from nearly all the American, and some British, 1950’s and 1960’s paperback publishers including: ACE, AVON, GOLD MEDAL, POCKET BOOKS, POPULAR LIBRARY, etc. These covers were partially redrawn presumably by French artists and, although this artwork is not as slick, many are still recognizable as being taken from other English language Vintage Paperback companies. The first 100 or so titles have some of the most attractive cover artwork and are generally the most difficult to find as First printings especially in better than Good condition. Individual titles appear for sale now and then, but large lots like this one are now simply RARE. This collection represents almost 60% of all titles issued by this publisher and is the result of many years of collecting. One would be hard pressed to find this many together! Five photos show a selection of titles in this lot, additional photos & scans are also available. A complete checklist of all 767 titles published will be provided to the buyer so he can see which titles are present. CONDITION: Early numbers especially those under #100 in this lot are in about Good (some better) condition with some spine creasing and edge wear, some light corner creases, the original sale price of 50¢ penned or stamped on some titles, however many of later higher numbers are generally Very Good (or better) condition. #007200 Price: $4500.00 (This is a heavy set of 453 books and will require additional postage. Please e-mail to confirm availability and correct postage before ordering.) [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Error Detecting and Error Correcting Codes. Bell Telephone Systems Technical Publications Monograph 1757

Bell Telephone Laboratories, New York 1950 - First Separate Edition. 4to., pp. 14; original printed wrappers; ex-library stamp (dated Nov 21, 1950); perforations for ring binder as issued; very good. Small scratch to upper left corner near second hole punch. First separate issue, October 1950. Originally published in the Bell System Technical Journal Vol. 29, pp. 147-160, April 1950. The Bell Telephone System Monograph series was primarily distributed to libraries that subscribed to the series. Stapled wraps. First printed in the April 1950 issue of the Bell System Technical Journal, this Monograph was issued October 1950. Often erroneously referred to as offprints, the Monograph series was not published in most cases contemporaneously with the original publications (this is an exception). The series also included work by Bell System employees that were first published outside the Bell System umbrella. They are, however, usually the first separate publication, and are thus highly prized by collectors since offprints in the traditional sense were not produced in the Bell System as far as we are aware."Hamming was the first coding theorist to attract widespread interest in his work.frustrated when a failure in one of Bell Lab's relay comptuers had spoiled a run of data, Hamming began deveooping the first error-correction codes (now known as Hamming codes), which enabled computers to find and correct single errors in a stretch of data, as well as to discover double errors. Error correction has since been developed into a scientific discipline." (Origins of Cyberspace 646). [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Error Detecting and Error Correcting Codes ; Traveling-Wave Tubes ; Memory Requirements in a Telephone Exchange

New York: Bell Telephone Laboratories, 1950. First Edition. Cloth. Near Fine. First Edition. 675 pages. 8vo. Blue cloth with previous owner name (C. K. Birdsall) printed at base of spine panel and signature on front wrapper of January issue. Bound privately from separate issues, this copy does not have a volume title page. The entire Volume XXIX offered, containing 4 quarterly issues of the Bell System Technical Journal (only the January issue still retains it's original wrappers as often the case). The article by Hamming is found on pp. 147-160 in the April 1950 issue. Sound and clean, noting a taped tear on page 496. Cloth. Volume XXIX contains work by some of Bell Lab's great minds. It contains work by Hamming in coding theory, Pierce on traveling wave tubes, Shannon on Memory sizing, 2 articles by Hartley and Bardeen on Germanium Point Contacts. It also includes articles on the transistor and triode as they were being developed. A few of the highlights follow. "Hamming was the first coding theorist to attract widespread interest in his work...frustrated when a failure in one of Bell Lab's relay comptuers had spoiled a run of data, Hamming began deveooping the first error-correction codes (now known as Hamming codes), which enabled computers to find and correct single errors in a stretch of data, as well as to discover double errors. Error correction has since been developed into a scientific discipline..." (Origins of Cyberspace 646) Pierce's massive four installment article on Traveling-Wave Tubes is found in the January, April, July and October issues. Pierce "invented the electron-multiplier tube and electron gun (the basis of television computer monitors, and other visual display equipment), and was instrumental in developing NASA's first communications satellites" (Origins of Cyberspace 836). Issue 3 in this volume includes Shannon's Memory Requirements in a Telephone Exchange. (Origins of Cyberspace 883). "Charles Kennedy ("Ned") Birdsall, Professor Emeritus at the University of California, Berkeley, and a pioneering inventor and educator in microwave tubes and plasma physics...Among numerous awards and honors for his contributions, Ned was selected as the inaugural recipient for the IEEE Marie Sklodowska-Curie Award in 2011. This Technical Field Award is one of the highest awards in the IEEE hierarchy, and recognizes outstanding contributions to the field of Nuclear and Plasma Sciences and Engineering. His citation is "for theoretical investigations and fundamental discoveries involving microwave tubes, electron beam physics and particle-in-cell simulation of plasma physics." (EECS Univ Michigan) Also see Lee,"International Biographical Dictionary of Computer Pioneers", 1995, for more information about Bardeen, Hamming, Hartley, Pierce, Shannon and others.         The Town & the City.

New York: Harcourt, Brace & Co. 8vo (20.5 cm; 8"). [3] ff., 499, [1] pp.. (1950) First edition of Kerouac's first book. An advance review copy, this distinction being printed on its wrapper; there apparently was no distributed "proof copy" for it. A fictionalized account of the author's life and family and friends, the novel is somewhat conventional but contains the seeds and hints of things that will mature, expand, and dominate in his later writings. Publisher's printed salmon paper wrappers, rear cover with a slim crease to paper (in production?); a fresh, unworn copy. Cryptic pencilled characters (totalling 13) on endpapers and rear endpaper with one very short tear. Housed in a quarter green morocco clamshell box.

        Principles of Economics

Glencoe, Illionois: The Free Press, 1950. Hardcover. Like New. First American edition. (Correct first in the English language, as well, following the original German publication by 79 years.) 328 p. Black cloth with silver lettering. Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. Bookplate of Philip Nymeyer on fep with another bookplate quoting his father, apparently, prominent Austrian School advocate and industrialist Frederick Nymeyer, for his descendants to avoid Knight's introduction, without explanation.
