A play in three acts with character descriptions. 116 mimeographed pages, the text on rectos only. Hand corrected / altered in black ink throughout. In very good condition, the binding a little rubbed and marked, the contents with some silverfish erosion to the edge of the blank front endpaper and tanning to the text block edge otherwise clean. Almost certainly unique. An early adaptation of George Orwell’s novel for the stage. We have been unable to find any information pertaining to the author (perhaps a pseudonym?) or evidence of the play in this form ever making it to production. Bellissimo esemplare di provenienza eccezionale. - [FRENCH VERSION FOLLOWS] Nouvelle édition imprimée à 1050 exemplaires numérotés sur vélin Navarre de Voiron. Reliure de l'éditeur en plein cartonnage réalisé d'après la maquette originale de Mario Prassinos. Précieux et important envoi autographe signé d'Albert Camus à René Char : « à René Char, ces premières Noces, avec le meilleur du cœur. Albert Camus ». L'amitié entre Albert Camus et René Char figure parmi les plus belles et fructueuses de la littérature française. Rien ne semblait destiner l'écrivain journaliste algérois et le poète provençal à se rencontrer et encore moins à s'apprécier. Camus n'entendait rien à la poésie et Char n'avait aucun goût pour le roman, ceux de Maurice Blanchot mis à part. Pourtant, c'est par leurs œuvres respectives que les deux artistes se découvrent et s'apprécient. Ainsi avant Camus et Char se rencontrent Caligula et Hypnos, illustrant tous deux la responsabilité du poète face à la violence du monde. « Dans nos ténèbres, il n'y a pas une place pour la Beauté. Toute la place est pour la Beauté. » (Char, Feuillets d'Hypnos). C'est cette exigence commune de la Beauté comme réponse politique à la démesure des idéologies qui unit les deux artistes au sortir de la guerre. Ferment de leur amitié, cette première « reconnaissance » inaugure une correspondance de douze années au fil de laquelle croît leur affection mutuelle et se révèlent leur convergences artistiques : « Je crois que notre fraternité - sur tous les plans - va encore plus loin que nous l'envisageons et que nous l'éprouvons. » (Char à Camus, 3 novembre 1951). « Quelle bonne et profonde chose que de se détacher peu à peu de tout ce et tous ceux qui ne méritent rien et de reconnaître peu à peu à travers les années et les frontières une famille d'esprits. Comme on se sent beaucoup tout d'un coup à être enfin quelques - uns... » (Camus à Char, 26 février 1950) Ces « quelques - uns », référence à la citation de Gide : « Je crois à la vertu du petit nombre ; le monde sera sauvé par quelques - uns », Char et Camus tenteront de les rassembler en fondant ensemble la revue Empédocle : « Il est peut - être temps que les quelques - uns dont parlait Gide se réunissent » écrit Camus à Guilloux en janvier 1949. Ils publieront des écrits de Gracq, Melville, Grenier, Guilloux, Blanchot, Ponge, Rilke, Kafka... Les dissensions internes auront rapidement raison de la revue, et c'est ensemble qu'ils abandonneront le projet. Leur amitié, elle, est sans ombre. Les deux hommes se retrouvent régulièrement en Provence, terre natale de Char et devenue, grâce à lui, le pays d'adoption de Camus. Ils partagent leurs manuscrits, se confient leur doutes : « Plus je produis et moins je suis sûr. Sur le chemin où marche un artiste, la nuit tombe de plus en plus épaisse. Finalement, il meurt aveugle. Ma seule foi est que la lumière l'habite, au - dedans, et qu'il ne peut la voir, et qu'elle rayonne quand même. Mais comment en être sûr. C'est pourquoi il faut bien s'appuyer sur l'ami, quand il sait et comprend, et qu'il marche lui - même du même pas. » Ils se dédient leurs œuvres (la réédition des Feuillets d'Hypnos et Actuelles) et s'adressent sur chaque nouvel exemplaire des dédicaces qui, chacune, scellent leur fraternité d'armes et d'âme. « à René Char qui aide à vivre, en attendant notre royaume, son ami et son frère en espoir. » (manuscrit de La Peste) « Pour Albert Camus, un des très rares hommes que j'admire et que j'aime et dont l'œuvre est l'honneur de ce temps. Affectueusement Albert Camus » (Actuelles I) « Pour Albert Camus, dont l'amitié et l'œuvre forment une Présence qui éclaire et fortifie les yeux » (Art bref) « Ah si seulement les poètes consentaient à redevenir ce qu'ils étaient autrefois : des voyants qui nous parlent de ce qui est possible... Que ne nous donnent - ils l'avant - goût des vertus à venir. Nietzsche ». « A René Char, frère de ceux - ci, dont il a fait toute la route avec l'admiration et l'affection de son ami. / Albert Camus » Notre exemplaire, lui, a sans doute été adressé en octobre 1953 avec les autres « reliés » (les cartonnages Prassinos - cf. lettre du 23 octobre 1953). Camus avait déja adressé à Char un premier exemplaire de cette ode à son pays natal, initialement parue en 1939, bien avant leur rencontre : A René Char, pour ramener entre nous deux ces années où je ne le connaissais pas mais qui contenait déja les raisons de notre amitié.". Cette seconde dédicace sur "ces premières Noces" souligne combien cette oeuvre de jeunesse qui célèbre "les noces de l'homme avec le monde" est une révélation précoce de ce qu'ils nommeront leur "fraternité de planète". A la mort de Camus, Char publie La postérité du soleil, leur œuvre commune écrite en 1952, hommage à leur amitié et à : « cet arrière - pays qui est à l'image du nôtre, invisible à autrui ». Collotype is one of the most accurate and attractive methods of photomechanical tonal printing processes. Highly skilled and expensive process, it cannot produce more than a limited number of impressions. It has been used for single-sheet prints and luxury portfolios, and since the 1950s has been abandoned by all except a few small specialist firms.

        Bebop dancing in the Club Eleven, London, in the background a few musisians

      London, "Illustrated", 1950. Original photograph, silverprint, 24 x 18,7 cm. Photograph 6. Two small discoloured spots in left upper corner and right border. Club Eleven, named after the number of founder members, began life just before Christmas in 1948. It was a co-operative arrangement designed to bring bebop to the attention of the jazz public at large. The musicians involved were Ronnie Scott, Hank Shaw, Leon Calvert, Johnny Rogers, Bernie Fenton, Tommy Pollard, Lennie Bush, Joe Muddel, Tony Crombie and Laurie Morgan plus manager Harry Morris. Johnny Dankworth and Denis Rose were regulars from the start. Some gave up steady work, Scott left Ted Heath, Fenton severed relations with Oscar Rabin, and Rose, Crombie, Muddel and Dankworth came from the now defunct Tito Burns orchestra. - This venue with these musicians were the first truly organised bebop sessions in Britain. With the star-studded assembly of musicians, Club Eleven became the focal point for the new jazz and the inspiration to many other young musicians throughout the country. - The music was played by the Johnny Dankworth Quartet comprising Dankworth, Bernie Fenton (pno), Joe Muddel (bs), and Laurie Morgan (d) and a band led by Ronnie Scott with Hank Shaw (tpt), Johnny Rogers (alto), Tommy Pollard (pno), Lennie Bush (bs), and Tony Crombie (d). The Dankworth quartet became a quintet when trumpeter Leon Calvert was added. - Mac's Rehearsal Rooms, 41, Windmill Street, (where the Moffat Club had been), became the first venue operating on Thursday and Saturday nights. The early months of the Eleven saw the highest peak of enthusiasm in the history of British modern jazz. The jazzmen continued to listen and study as many records of Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis that they could get hold of. Broadcasts, recordings, and concerts came in quick succession and public acclaim was such as to force a move within a few months to much larger premises at 50, Carnaby Street, satisfying the legions of fans coming from all over the country to the by now famous Club Eleven. It was now operating six days a week in the evening and was open in the afternoon as a meeting point for musicians. At this point Johnny Dankworth left to form his Seven taking Joe Muddel with him, and Harry Morris also quit. - Tony Hall writing in 1960 said "I can never recall such a sense of evil excitement in a club. The atmosphere was so vivid that the red glow from the stand and the savaget beat made me think of hell on earth!" - The phenomenal rise of the club, though dependent on the new jazz music it embraced, owed much to the personality of group leaders Ronnie Scott and Johnny Dankworth. - Unfortunately after this the early enthusiasm among the musicians began to wear off, they began to quarrel about the financial side of the club and the old spirit was gone. On the night of 15th April, 1950, Club Eleven was raided by the Drugs Squad. Six musicians appeared on drugs charges and Denis Rose was arrested by the Military Police as an Army deserter. The news of the arrest, trial and conviction of some of the Club Eleven members occupied the front page of almost every national paper in the size of type usually reserved for earthquakes or war. Though this publicity did nothing to lessen attendances, the decline of the Club Eleven was only a matter of time. There were a number of other factors contributing to the dissolution of an organisation that for the two years of its existence had a profound influence on its leading figures and devoted followers but it folded shortly afterwards. - - - Don Rendell remembers Club Eleven... A lot of jazz activity was consolidated by the formation of the 'Club Eleven' which was quite a milestone. It was the first regular paid modern jazz gig for London musicians, who ran it themselves. It was a co-operative arrangement designed to bring bebop to the attention of the jazz public at large. The musicians involved were Ronnie Scott, Hank Shaw, Leon Calvert, Johnny Rogers, Bernie Fenton, Tommy Pollard, Lennie Bush, Joe Muddel, Tony Crombie and Laurie Morgan plus manager Harry Morris. Johnny Dankworth and Denis Rose were regulars from the start. Some gave up steady work, Scott left Ted Heath, Fenton severed relations with Oscar Rabin, and Rose, Crombie, Muddel and Dankworth came from the now defunct Tito Burns orchestra. - This venue with these musicians were the first truly organised bebop sessions in Britain. With the star-studded assembly of musicians, Club Eleven became the focal point for the new jazz and the inspiration to many other young musicians throughout the country. - The music was played by the Johnny Dankworth Quartet comprising Dankworth, Bernie Fenton (pno), Joe Muddel (bs), and Laurie Morgan (d) and a band led by Ronnie Scott with Hank Shaw (tpt), Johnny Rogers (alto), Tommy Pollard (pno), Lennie Bush (bs), and Tony Crombie (d). The Dankworth quartet became a quintet when trumpeter Leon Calvert was added. - Mac's Rehearsal Rooms, 41, Windmill Street, (where the Moffat Club had been), became the first venue operating on Thursday and Saturday nights. The early months of the Eleven saw the highest peak of enthusiasm in the history of British modern jazz. The jazzmen continued to listen and study as many records of Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis that they could get hold of. Broadcasts, recordings, and concerts came in quick succession and public acclaim was such as to force a move within a few months to much larger premises at 50, Carnaby Street, satisfying the legions of fans coming from all over the country to the by now famous Club Eleven. It was now operating six days a week in the evening and was open in the afternoon as a meeting point for musicians. Born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1919, Jason Schoener came from a family of distinguished American artists. He was the nephew of sculptor/painter William Zorach and his wife, painter Marguerite Zorach. Beginning in 1939, Schoener spent his summers at the Zorach family farm in Georgetown, Maine, where he studied art with his Uncle William. After service in the Pacific during WWII, Schoener served as an instructor, department chairman, and dean at California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, CA. Schoener's other teaching assignments included Mills College in Oakland, California, and the Athens Technological Institute in Greece. Meanwhile, Schoener continued to use his Georgetown and then Robinhood homes Maine as a summer studio. Over the span of almost two decades, Schoener had several solo exhibitions at the Midtown Gallery on East 57th Street in New York City.         Autograph letter signed "Benjamin [?]Br" to the noted English composer, broadcaster, and writer on music Antony Hopkins

      Hopkins's Festival Overture was first performed at the Aldeburgh Festival on June 24, 1950, in Aldeburgh Parish Church, conducted by the composer. Of the work, Hopkins writes: "Judge of my surprise when I received a letter from Benjamin Britten asking me to write a short Festival Overture for the then comparatively new Aldeburgh Festival. It was to be for a tiny band - just 11 strings and 2 trumpets. I had earlier dedicated my first opera to Britten and this may have been a kindly reciprocal gesture. I duly wrote this piece and tried to finish it triumphantly, despite the small resources. My 'triumph' was received in total silence - I had forgotten that the performance was given in the local church, and in those days applause wasn't allow in churches. Surely the angels wouldn't mind? Anyway, to this day, it was the biggest anti-climax of my life, and I slunk out of the building a broken spirit." From Goodmusic Publishers online. He apologizes for not writing sooner, and for not spending more time with Hopkins and his wife, Alison, during the Festival. "... [the Overture] made an extremely brilliant effect, and was a perfect opening piece for what, I think, turned out to be a nice concert. I especially admired the restraint & skill in writing for the small body of performers. The performance seemed fine - I hope you were pleased... I was sorry not to see more of you & Alison - but the whole social business of the week gets a bit out of hand... Thank you again for your kindness, promptness & skill in writing the overture."         The Morning Watch.

      Rome: Botteghe oscure,, 1950. Octavo. Original buff wrappers, title to front cover in black. Faint spotting to wrappers, front hinge starting at head but text block sound, contents lightly toned. A very good copy. First edition, first printing. Presentation offprint, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "For Albert Brush, with warmest regard and esteem, Jim Agee, June 6, '54"; an offprint of the novella as it first appeared in the literary journal Botteghe oscure, VI. The recipient, the enigmatic Santa Monica poet Albert Brush, travelled in bohemian circles in Greenwich Village in the 1920s. He was in Paris in the early 1930s and spent most of his life moving in the artistic circles of Southern California; he appears briefly in the biographies of figures such as Christopher Isherwood and Charles Laughton. In the later 1930s he helped write Laughton's famous English adaptation of Bertold Brecht's Life of Galileo. In 1954, the time of this inscription, Agee was finishing work with Laughton on the screenplay of The Night of the Hunter (1955); it was presumably Laughton who introduced the two. Agee's novella, with its 12-year-old protagonist and atmosphere of foreboding religiosity, shares a number of themes with his screenplay for Laughton's celebrated film.

Float-mounted and matted in white beside a 9.75 x 7.5-inch photo of Bunche seated casually on a desk with a world map in the background; set in a black frame measuring 15.5 x 20.75 inches. Natural folds but still in fine condition. American political scientist, academic, and diplomat who received the 1950 Nobel Peace Prize for his late 1940s mediation in Israel and was involved in the formation of the United Nations.
