        [The Chronicles of Narnia:]

London: Geoffrey Bles, [The Bodley Head], 1950-1956. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe; Prince Caspian; The Voyage of the Dawn Treader; The Silver Chair; The Horse and His Boy; The Magician's Nephew; The Last Battle. 7 volumes, octavo. Recent burgundy morocco, raised bands to spines, titles and extra decoration to spines gilt, single rule to boards gilt, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Housed in a matching cloth slipcase. With colour frontispieces and black and white illustrations by Pauline Baynes. The occasional minor blemish, an excellent set. First editions, first impressions throughout this complete set of the beloved Narnia series. 'The immediate inspiration for "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" was a series of nightmares that Lewis had had about Lions. More seriously, he was concerned to do for children what he had done for an adult readership in his science fiction trilogy... The Narnia novels are not allegorical; they are entirely in keeping with the belief, shared by Lewis and his close friend and Oxford colleague Tolkien, that stories in themselves, especially of the mythical type, can give spiritual nourishment without imparting abstract meaning... As Naomi Lewis has written, the books are 'intoxicating' to all but the most relentlessly unimaginative readers, and must be judged the most sustained achievement in fantasy for children by a 20th century author'.

Near Fine+ ¶Eliot was at Princeton in 1948, working on his second verse-drama, One-Eye Riley (which, after significant revision, became The Cocktail Party), when he received word he had won the Nobel Prize for literature. His literary reputation rested principally on poetry and criticism, but in later years, beginning with The Family Reunion in 1939, he had turned to the verse drama that would display his Christian sensibilities. In its early, revised form, The Cocktail Party, in three acts, was based closely on Euripides's Alcestis, according to Elliott Martin Browne, producer of all Eliot's plays except Sweeney Agonistes (Eliot thanks Browne in this edition's acknowledgments "for his criticism of the [play's] structure, from the first version to the last."). According to Gallup, 10,000 copies were published on March 10, 1950, all of which

        Actuelles. Chroniques 1944-1948

First edition, one advance (service de presse) copy. One pale stain to lower cover, paper yellowed, this copy has a chemise and slipcae of grey half shagreen by signé Devauchelle.Handsome autograph inscription with initials from Albert Camus to his close friend André Belamich.
