      [New York]. [ca. 1950]. - Folio. Plate size 45 x 37.5 cm, plus full margins. Series of six original etchings, with aquatint. Some faint smudges to a few margins, otherwise fine. A striking, atmospheric series of etchings depicting six Roman emperors, each being example #4 from an edition of fifty numbered impressions, each captioned, numbered and signed by the artist in the margin. The etchings are also titled in the plate: "Nero The Profligate," "Marcus Aurelius the Philosopher," "Constantine the Christian," "Great Caesar the Conqueror," "Augustus Father of Rome," and "Tiberius render Unto Caesar." Ritter (1906 - 1976) ran the Laurel Gallery in New York from 1947 - 1950, and published the work of a number of artists, including Milton Avery. It is possible that this series appeared at that time.

Edwin Roscoe Shrader (1878 - 1960), Painter, Illustrator, And Teacher, Began His Art Studies With William Lees Judson At Usc. Shrader'S Father Was A Professor And Chair Of The Physics And Chemistry Department At Usc. In 1902 Roscoe Enrolled At The Art Institute Of Chicago For Two Years, Studying With John C. Johansen And Thomas Wood Stevens (1880-1942). He Applied And Was Accepted To Howard Pyle'S School Of Illustration In Wilmington, Delaware; Under Pyle'S Guidance For Two Years (Until The School Closed In 1906), Shrader Became An Accomplished Illustrator Of Books And Magazines, With Clients Such As Harper'S, Century, And Scribner'S. He Was A Member Of The Art Colony In New Hope, Pa For Three Years Before Settling In Los Angeles In 1917. After Returning To California, Shrader Joined The California Art Club And Became A Teacher At The Otis Art Institute. In 1923, He Was Named Dean Of The Faculty, And Upon Retirement In 1949, Was Honored As Dean Emeritus Of Otis By County Supervisor John Anson Ford. In 1924 Shrader Was Elected President Of The California Art Club, A Position That He Would Hold Three Times. He Received A Silver Medal For The Wreck In The Cac'S 17Th Annual Exhibit (1926), And Was Awarded The Mrs. Keith Spalding Prize For Best Western Landscape Twice: For Pageant Of A Mountain Camp In The Cac'S 18Th Annual (1927) And For Grape Pickers Of La Cañada In Their 20Th Annual (1929). Shrader Played A Large Role In Helping Oil Heiress Aline Barnsdall Decide To Gift Her Famous Hollyhock House To The California Art Club To Use For Fifteen Years (1927-1942) Rent Free. Shrader Would Preside Over The First Black American Art Exhibit In Los Angeles, Held At The Hollyhock House (1929) As Well As Myriad Other Cac Activities. As Dean Of Otis, He Supported Education For Returning G.I.S, Fighting To Keep Them In Schools. The Cac Joined The G.I.S And The Otis Alumni At The Protests - Later Resulting In The First Annual G.I.         Conan the Conqueror.

      New York: Gnome Press, Inc.,, 1950. Octavo. Original dark red cloth, titles to spine and front cover in black, brown map endpapers. With the dust jacket. Ownership inscription to foot of front free endpaper. An excellent bright copy in the jacket with slight rubbing to extremities, small nick to foot of spine, small mark to front flap. First edition, first impression. Although this is the first of the Conan books to be published it is Conan's final adventure, as well as being "the longest and most ambitious". The character of Conan first appeared in 1932 in Weird Tales magazine; the renowned fantasy magazine which also published H. P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos stories. This story was originally published in Weird Tales as The Hour of the Dragon between 1935 and 1936. Howard's "stories of bloody fantastic adventure remain the best in their subgenre".

WhiteÂ’s own copy, inscribed by him on the front free endpaper: “The property of T.H. White. Please donÂ’t steal this my last copy. T.H. White.” This copy then further inscribed and presented by White from his library in 1957—White has crossed out this earlier inscription, initialed the hash marks, and penned beneath this, “Presented [and] released to John Gloag by T.H. White in person on May 29th, 1957. T.H.W. i.e. honestly come by.” This copy also with two lengthy footnotes to the text added by White in black ink and initialed by him.The first footnote penned by White covers the lower margins of pages 42-43, and reads “It may be a point worth mentioning that, to a gentleman of WalpoleÂ’s period, London itself was a brand new town—as new as Chicago is to a gentleman of our own day. It had been burned to the ground only 50 years before the birth of Walpole, and re-created by Sir Christopher Wren in what was then the height of modernity. T.H.W.” The second footnote, on page 44, reads “‘Do everything,Â’ Lord Chesterfield had written to his son, ‘in minuet-time; speak, think and move always in that measure.Â’ T.H.W.” Recipient Gloag was an English writer on furniture design and architecture; he also wrote several science fiction novels and historical fiction, including Artorius Rex (1977), set in the Arthurian milieu that White portrayed so memorably in The Once and Future King. “This is the first of his two volumes studying a minor period of the 18th century, between the Age of Reason and the Romantic Revival. The book deals mostly with historical characters an such well-known eccentrics as Horace Walpole, the Marquis de Sade, Dr. Johnson, George Selwyn, Admiral Byng and Queen Caroline Matilda of Denmark” (Gallix).         SOCREALISM: Capodristria 1.-8. X 1950. Mostra del Attivitˆ Economica del Circondario del Istria

      [Ljubljana : Blasnikova tiskarna ] 1950 - Lithograph in colour (Very Good, soft folds with tiny holes on crossings) 93 x 74 cm (36.7 x 29.1 inches). A large, attractively printed poster map shows the coastal area of Istria between Koper (Capodistria) in Slovenia in the north and Umag in Croatia in the south. The images show the produce of the region, as well as the industry and tourism. The poster is dominated by a gigantic figure of a muscly fisherman. The images are wrapped in string of flags, which includes a flag of Yugoslavia, Slovenia and Italian minority in Yugoslavia. The latter flag Ð which is a combination of Italian flag and a red star, was used from circa 1946 or 1947 on, until the 1990s. The poster was made for the occasion of the exhibition of the economical achievements after WWII in Koper, what was at the time zone B of the Free Territory of Trieste. After WWII the coastal territory around Trieste to Croatian cities in the south was divided into Zone A and B. The Free State of Trieste was dissolved in 1954, Zone A (save some minor border concessions in YugoslaviaÕs favour) was handed to Italy, while Zone B was given to Yugoslavia. is allocation was de facto accepted by both nations, although it was not formally agreed until the Treaty of Osimo (1975). Fortunately, today relations are amicable, as Slovenians in Trieste enjoy special cultural protections, while Italian speakers enjoy similar protections in Istria (now divided between the sovereign republics of Slovenia and Croatia). Koper became a part of Yugoslavia and is now a part of Slovenia. After the referendum a majority of Italian population. We could only trace two examples in the institutions worldwide.

        PAPERMAKING BY HAND IN AMERICA

      Chillicothe, Ohio: Mountain House Press, 1950. First Edition, one of 210 copies signed by Dard Hunter. With a hand-coloured frontispiece, numerous illustrations, tipped-in samples and labels. Folio (18 by 12.5 inches), in the original linen backed decorative paper-covered boards, the spine with a paper label lettered and decorated in black and red. Housed in a morocco backed buckram covered box with gilt lettering. 326 pp. An especially fine and handsome copy, the textblock pristine, the binding equally well preserved, the original prospectus for the book, and an invitation to the event with Dard Hunter honouring the publication are affixed to front endleaves. Some age evidence to the protective box. A VERY FINE COPY OF THIS IMPORTANT WORK BY DARD HUNTER, THE LAST AND MOST AMBITIOUS WORK TO COME FROM HUNTER’S PRESS. The colophon states 210 copies were produced, but in his book, MY LIFE WITH PAPER, Hunter says it had only been possible to produce 180 of them. The book took several years of work to produce. It has a hand-coloured frontispiece, 96 facsimiles on specially made paper, 27 reproductions of early American watermarks made in exacting imitation of the originals and 42 full-size reproductions of old paper labels specially printed on paper made to emulate the original labels in the Paper Museum.

Professionally conserved: 6 inch tear to mid upper edge, 4 inch tear in lower margin, 4 short tears on right edge now mended and minimized; single pinhole in each corner, horizontal crease across center of poster, tape residue on verso (barely visible from front); clean, bright condition. One of Jean-Gabriel Domergue's lithe beauties with a giant bouquet of colorful flowers. While the poster is a photo offset lithograph, the richness of the color printing gives the look of a lithograph, making for a stunning, joyful image.         Archive of Helicopter Photographs

      N.p.: N.p. circa 1950s-1980s - Extensive photographic collection of over 1000 helicopter pictures, most silver gelatin prints, collated into six 2 1/2-inch thick Leitz binders, and organized by manufacturer and model. Three binders are dedicated to the American company Bell Helicopters and are titled Bell, Bell UH-1, and UH1D; with two focused on the "Huey" model, widely used by the US Army during the Vietnam War. Two binders are titled SUD AVN ALII75-77 and SUD AVN ALII (F/BGS/Bw), both concentrated on the French helicopter maker Sud Aviation, and their then primary model, the Alouette. The fifth binder is titled Bölkow and is centered on the West German company of the same name; an additional clasp bound manila folder is laid in and contains more Bölkow images. The majority of the photographs were collected from a variety of military related sources such as press packets, presentation packets, tear sheets, and other such official disseminations; indeed some of the images, especially from Bell and Sud Aviation are stamped to verso with company name. However, there are also numerous snapshots more personal in origin. The organization of the folders documents the production and variations of the helicopters, often with nearly fetishistic attention to small details, like markings and graphics. While civilian deployment is documented, the overall tone and content is distinctly martial; the West German helicopter parks and French training exercises especially suggest the tense staging of European Cold War militarization. Although the exact purpose of this archive is unknown, certain clues (such as pages from a West German plastic modeling company) suggest an amateur enthusiast engaged in obsessive typological collation. Throughout, the high quality of the photographs are chillingly anonymous and professional. Taken as a whole, a phenomenal photographic archive and accidentally curated art object. An extensive catalogue about the archive entitled "From the Bunker" has been published by The Everyday Press. Light wear from handling throughout, overall near fine in cardboard binders.

Large octavo, contemporary black cloth. $1600.First edition of the complete journal volume containing the first publication of the Nash Equilibrium, which forever changed the fields of game theory and economics.Published shortly after Nash received his Ph.D. in 1950, this is the first and most influential of only three articles directly derived from NashÂ’s thesis research. As a graduate student at Princeton, Nash encountered game theory, which had been recently articulated by John von Neumann and Oskar Morgenstern. While their theory dealt with two-person zero-sum games, or “pure rivalries,” Nash explored rivalries with the possibility of mutual gain, where each player acts independently and no outside authority makes sure that players stick to predetermined rules. His idea that any game such as this has one equilibrium point became known as the “Nash equilibrium,” a founding concept in analyzing economic behavior, and the one for which he won the Nobel Prize in 1994. NashÂ’s devastating struggle with schizophrenia, which propelled him out of elite mathematics for decades, was chronicled in Sylvia NasarÂ’s award-winning biography, A Beautiful Mind, and by the film, which won the Academy Award for Best Picture in 2002.       [Ljubljana]: Ljudska pravica . 1950 - Lithograph in colours, 49 x 34 cm / 19.3 x 13.4 inches (Very Good, soft folds with tiny tears in margins). A rare smaller colourful poster was made for a bicycle race across Slovenia, Croatia, and the Free Territory to Trieste. The race was organised by Yugoslavia in the time of the Tito-Stalin split, as a response to its expel from the popular Peace Race, organised by the Communist countries. This highly decorative mid-century design poster shows a map with a route of the bicycle race, made in 1950 through the territory of Slovenia, Croatia and the Free Territory of Trieste. The race was attended by Yugoslavia, Trieste and eleven other West-European countries. This bicycle race had an important political meaning in the time of the Tito-Stalin split after 1948. In that year Yugoslavia broke contacts with all Communist countries and was, as one of the consequences, expelled from the bicycle race of East European countries: the so called Peace Race. In the first race, organised in 1948, which was supposed to be an Eastern Block reply to Tour de France, winners were Yugoslavians. Because they could not participate in the Peace Race in the following years, whey have organised their own similar international event, held on the territory of Slovenia, Croatia ant the coastal area of Trieste, which was a few years later divided between Italy and Yugoslavia. Sport events such as this bonded Yugoslavia, which a decade later became a member of Non-Aligned Movement, with western countries. The artist Henrik Béranek was active as an illustrator of books, posters and children's magazine Ciciban after WWII and around 1950. He is not to be confused with the artist Jože Béranek, the author of many right-wing propaganda posters, who was executed in 1945, after the end of WW II.

Edwin Roscoe Shrader (1878 ¿ 1960), Painter, Illustrator, And Teacher, Began His Art Studies With William Lees Judson At Usc. Shrader¿S Father Was A Professor And Chair Of The Physics And Chemistry Department At Usc. In 1902 Roscoe Enrolled At The Art Institute Of Chicago For Two Years, Studying With John C. Johansen And Thomas Wood Stevens (1880-1942). He Applied And Was Accepted To Howard Pyle¿S School Of Illustration In Wilmington, Delaware; Under Pyle¿S Guidance For Two Years (Until The School Closed In 1906), Shrader Became An Accomplished Illustrator Of Books And Magazines, With Clients Such As Harper¿S, Century, And Scribner¿S. He Was A Member Of The Art Colony In New Hope, Pa For Three Years Before Settling In Los Angeles In 1917. After Returning To California, Shrader Joined The California Art Club And Became A Teacher At The Otis Art Institute. In 1923, He Was Named Dean Of The Faculty, And Upon Retirement In 1949, Was Honored As Dean Emeritus Of Otis By County Supervisor John Anson Ford. In 1924 Shrader Was Elected President Of The California Art Club, A Position That He Would Hold Three Times. He Received A Silver Medal For The Wreck In The Cac¿S 17Th Annual Exhibit (1926), And Was Awarded The Mrs. Keith Spalding Prize For Best Western Landscape Twice: For Pageant Of A Mountain Camp In The Cac¿S 18Th Annual (1927) And For Grape Pickers Of La Cañada In Their 20Th Annual (1929). Shrader Played A Large Role In Helping Oil Heiress Aline Barnsdall Decide To Gift Her Famous Hollyhock House To The California Art Club To Use For Fifteen Years (1927-1942) Rent Free. Shrader Would Preside Over The First Black American Art Exhibit In Los Angeles, Held At The Hollyhock House (1929) As Well As Myriad Other Cac Activities. As Dean Of Otis, He Supported Education For Returning G.I.S, Fighting To Keep Them In Schools. The Cac Joined The G.I.S And The Otis Alumni At The Protests ¿ Later Resulting In The First Annual G.I. In this continuation of his first collection of essays, The World As I See It (1934), Einstein offers further thoughts crossing that divide, mirroring his political, social, philosophical and scientific concerns. Drawn from articles, speeches, letters and various papers, all written from 1934 to 1950, with many published here for the first time, the book includes selections on science, ethics, public affairs, issues in Jewish history, the dilemma of modern war and tributes to figures such as Marie Curie, Isaac Newton and Mahatma Gandhi. This work was issued in a number of different cloths and dust jackets, and there continues to be bibliographic uncertainty about some points; this copy's cloth and jacket is commonly identified as first edition.
