USS GENERAL WILLIAM A MANN (AP 112) Slow Boat From China

1948. Photographs mounted in a twin-screwpost commercial photograph album. Album lacks front cover. General signs of use to mounting leaves. About VG. Images generally clear & sharp, overall VG - VG+.. 30 leaves of black mounting-stock paper. 118 b/w photographs [evidence of some removed], plus 10 RPPCs. Most photographs captioned, as are all RPPCs. Album: 7-1/2" x 10-3/4". Images mainly 2-1/2" x 3-1/4" [xx] and 3-1/2" x 5-1/8" The "General W. A. Mann, a P2-type troopship, was built by the Federal Shipbuilding and Drydock Company of Kearny, New Jersey, in 1942-43 and commissioned on the date of acquisition, 13 October 1943, Comdr. Paul S. Maguire, USNR, in command. ... From 2 November 1945 to 5 January 1946 she made a round trip voyage from Seattle to Nagasaki and Wakayama, Japan, setting the pattern of a series of "Magic Carpet" passages and "Diaper Runs" in which servicemen and their families were carried to and from the Far East. She stood duty as a "Guam Ferry" and continued to transport men and material until transferred to the Military Sea Transportation Service in October 1949." [Wiki] This photo album, obviously compiled by one of the ship's enlisted crew, documents one such voyage in 1948. And while there are a goodly number of photographs depicting the sailor's crewmate's [e.g., "Doc Moose" & "Chief Dees (The Slave Driver)"], there are also a significant number depicting the ship & shipboard life ["Doctor and Chief Rankin Stacking the Chow", "Captain's Inspection Aboard the Mann", & "One of the Main Engine Rooms on the Mann"], other vessels [e.g., "S.S. Cleveland on her Maiden Voyage", "Tin Can at Pearl Harbor" & "Sea Plane Tender at San Diego"], and places visited on the voyage [e.g., "Tied up at Pearl Harbor", "Comming [sic] Up The Wangpoo River to Shanghia China" & "Anchored Out in Manila Bay in the Phillippines"]. Most of the RPPCs depict life in Hawaii [e.g., "Banana Tree", "Kau Kau Corner, Honolulu" & "Hula Girls & Canoe"]. All-in-all, a nice visual record documenting this ship's 1948 voyage.

The Second World War [The Gathering Storm; Their Finest Hour; The Grand Alliance; The Hinge of Fate; Closing the Ring; Triumph and Tragedy.]

London: Cassell & Co. Ltd., 1948–54 - 6 volumes, octavo. Recent burgundy morocco, titles and decoration to spines gilt, rule to boards gilt, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. The occasional minor blemish, an excellent set handsomely bound. With diagrams and tables throughout the text. First editions of Churchill's masterpiece, the single most important historical account of the Second World War. As Max Beloff observed, there was no statesman of the twentieth century "whose retrospective accounts of the great events in which he has taken part have so dominated subsequent historical thinking". A man who had always primarily made his living by his pen, Churchill was the only major war leader to give an authoritative account of the conflict, and his ringing phrases seeped into the collective memory. As J. H. Plumb noted: "Churchill the historian lies at the very heart of all historiography of the Second World War, and will always remain there [we still] move down the broad avenues which he drove through war's confusion and complexity."         The Second World War.

London: Cassell & Co. Ltd.,, 1948–54. 6 volumes, octavo. Original black cloth, titles gilt to spines, top edges red, grey endpapers decorated with a design that alternates a lion passant with the initials W.S.C. With the typographical dust jackets with background design as per the endpapers. Maps and diagrams, some folding. A very good set in slightly rubbed and chipped jackets, sunned at the spine. First UK editions, first impressions, of the UK edition of Churchill's masterpiece, the single most important historical account of the Second World War. Cassell were scrupulous in incorporating Churchill's extensive revisions, and Churchill always insisted that the UK edition was definitive. Signed and dated by Churchill on the half-title of volume I in 1951. Facing the signature is a lengthy inscription attesting that the volume was signed by Churchill "sur le train Ferry-Boat", as recorded in Day-book 97 of the Commissariat Spécial de Police des Renseignements Généraux de la Gare de Paris-Nord, and witnessed by Le Commissaire Spécial next to the commissariat ink-stamp. Churchill was passing through Paris on his way back from a winter break in Marrakech, and on the evening in question he "had dined with Odette Pol Roger, whose champagne, as well as whose company, he always enjoyed" (Gilbert, VIII, p.589). The set was bought from direct descendants of the original owner, and family "legend" has it that a friend worked for the commissariat and, having advance knowledge of Churchill's travel arrangements, suggested that he would be able to get their copy signed for them, and did so. Max Beloff observed that there was no statesman of the twentieth century "whose retrospective accounts of the great events in which he has taken part have so dominated subsequent historical thinking." A man who had always primarily made his living by his pen, Churchill was the only major war leader to give an authoritative account of the conflict, and his ringing phrases seeped into the collective memory. As J. H. Plumb noted in his essay in A. J. P. Taylor's Churchill: Four Faces and the Man "Churchill the historian lies at the very heart of all historiography of the Second World War, and will always remain there… [we still] move down the broad avenues which he drove through war's confusion and complexity".

        Of Flight and Life

New York: Charles Scribners, 1948. First Edition. First printing Fine in dark blue cloth covered boards with gilt text on the spine. A 12mo measuring 7 1/4" by 5". In a very good, unclipped dust jacket with a 1/4" deep by 1/8" wide chip at the upper corner of the front panel at the fold to the spine area and several closed tears and related creasing around the edges of the front panel. Signed and warmly inscribed "To Dr. and Mrs. Charles A Beard | With great admiration | and best wishes" by the author and famous pilot in the year of publication. It is unfortunate though that the inscription is blurred by either the ink from Lindbergh's pen or the ink from another handwritten, ink note having been laid-in before it dried. This is an outstanding example of an association copy inscribed by one luminary to another. Lindbergh needs little in the way of introduction other than to say his signature is not often seen. Dr. Charles A. Beard was one of the most influential historians of the early 20th century and author of many books on history and political science and is best known for a book he co-wrote with his wife, The Rise of American Civilization in 1927. However, the link between Lindbergh and the Beards became more firmly cemented in the mid to late 1930's when both took a firm isolationist stand against Roosevelt in his attempts to bring the United States into war with Germany. Both men ultimately paid a dear price for their support of the Anti-War Movement. 56 pages of text. A very nice collectable copy.

The silk samples have different patterns and designs, with each measuring 4 1/4 x 1", except for the last sample of the first volume which measures 2 3/4 x 1", and three of the second volume measuring 3 x 1".Volume 48-1 with closed tear at head of spine, and pages 6 to 12 partly disbound. Title pages in Japanese and English. Wrappers in overall good+ to very good, interior in very good condition. * Nishijin-ori's origins are with the Yasushi family, who immigrated to Kyoto from China around the 5th to 6th century and introduced how to make silk textiles to the local people. By the 8th century, the royal court had created an official branch to supervise the textile artists and their production. These artisans used to live together around Chouza machi, Kamigyo ku, Kyoto, which became a textile Mecca. Between 1467 and 1477, Kyoto suffered a long period of civil war between the East and the West, and many artisans fled Kyoto. As a result, the whole industry was almost extinguished. However, after the war, the artisans returned to Kyoto and revived the textile industry in the area of Imagawa, Omiya. Since then, the name has been used for the method of weaving to create designs and patterns using dyed threads in Kyoto. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        EVERY IDLE DREAM

London: Collins, 1948. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good/Very good. With Illustrations by Elinor Darwin. London: Collins, 1948. First edition. The grandson of British naturalist Charles Darwin, Bernard Darwin (1876-1961) was an accomplished amateur golfer who covered the sport for The Times from 1907 to 1953 and for Country Life from 1907 to 1961, becoming the first writer ever to cover golf on a daily basis, rather than as an occasional feature. He was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2005. In the twenty-nine essays in this collection, Darwin elaborates on such varied topics as his boyhood attachment to tin soldiers, his "fundamentalist's" faith in Sherlockiana, his affection for small railroad junctions situated thrillingly close to some favorite golf links, the "restful excitement" of watching a cricket match, and the pleasures of a day spent in bed. Signed by Darwin on the title page. Octavo. Original gray cloth binding, with gilt titles. The spine is touch sun faded. Some light edgewear to the dust jacket, with a bit of mild foxing to the rear panel and flap; otherwise very good.

Seraph on the Suwanee: A Novel.

In 1948, Moon began working for the NAACP as their public relations director. Moon held the position until 1974. During his tenure at the NAACP, he promoted voting rights and encouraged the organization to work harder to elect politicians friendly to their cause. While at the NAACP, he also wrote the book Balance of Power and edited a collection of W. E. B. Du Bois' writings. In 1988, the library at the NAACP's headquarters in Baltimore was renamed in his memory. Near fine in a very good dust jacket. A nice association. Acclaimed for her pitch-perfect accounts of rural black life and culture, Zora Neale Hurston explores new territory with her novel Seraph on the Suwanee--a story of two people at once deeply in love and deeply at odds, set among the community of "Florida Crackers" at the turn of the twentieth century. Full of insights into the nature of love, attraction, faith, and loyalty, it follows young Arvay Henson, convinced she will never find true happiness, as she defends herself from unwanted suitors with hysterical fits and religious fervor. But into her life comes bright and enterprising Jim Meserve, who knows that Arvay is the woman for him, and nothing she can do will dissuade him. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

USS GENERAL WILLIAM A MANN (AP 112). Slow Boat From China

1948 - 30 leaves of black mounting-stock paper. A. Mann, a P2-type troopship, was built by the Federal Shipbuilding and Drydock Company of Kearny, New Jersey, in 1942?43 and commissioned on the date of acquisition, 13 October 1943, Comdr. Paul S. Maguire, USNR, in command. . She stood duty as a "Guam Ferry" and continued to transport men and material until transferred to the Military Sea Transportation Service in October 1949." [Wiki]This photo album, obviously compiled by one of the ship's enlisted crew, documents one such voyage in 1948. Cleveland on her Maiden Voyage", "Tin Can at Pearl Harbor" & "Sea Plane Tender at San Diego"], and places visited on the voyage [e.g., "Tied up at Pearl Harbor", "Comming [sic] Up The Wangpoo River to Shanghia China" & "Anchored Out in Manila Bay in the Phillippines"].Most of the RPPCs depict life in Hawaii [e.g., "Banana Tree", "Kau Kau Corner, Honolulu" & "Hula Girls & Canoe"].All-in-all, a nice visual record documenting this ship's 1948 voyage. Album lacks front cover. General signs of use to mounting leaves. About VG. Images generally clear & sharp, overall VG - VG+. Photographs mounted in a twin-screwpost commercial photograph album

        The Second World War

London: Cassell & Co. Ltd.,, 1948–54. [The Gathering Storm; Their Finest Hour; The Grand Alliance; The Hinge of Fate; Closing the Ring; Triumph and Tragedy.] 6 volumes, octavo. Recent burgundy morocco, titles and decoration to spines gilt, rule to boards gilt, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. With diagrams and tables throughout the text. The occasional minor blemish, an excellent set. As J. H. Plumb noted: "Churchill the historian lies at the very heart of all historiography of the Second World War, and will always remain thereÂ… [we still] move down the broad avenues which he drove through war's confusion and complexity.
