        The Second World War

London: Cassell & Co. Ltd.,, 1948–54. [The Gathering Storm (1948); Their Finest Hour (1949); The Grand Alliance (1950); The Hinge of Fate (1950); Closing the Ring (1951); Triumph and Tragedy (1953)]. 6 volumes, octavo. Original black cloth, titles gilt to spines, top edge red, grey endpapers decorated with a design that alternates a lion rampant with the initials W.S.C. In the typographical dust jackets with background design as per the endpapers. Maps and diagrams, some folding. Volume I: shallow chip to head of dustjacket spine, creasing to base of dust jacket spine; the rest have the occasional closed tear. An excellent set overall. First UK editions, first impressions, of the single most important historical account of the Second World War. Churchill prioritised the UK edition as the authoritative final text: The US edition had to be published first for contractual reasons. Max Beloff observed that there was no statesman of the twentieth century "whose retrospective accounts of the great events in which he has taken part have so dominated subsequent historical thinking." A man who had always primarily made his living by his pen, Churchill was the only major war leader to give an authoritative account of the conflict, and his ringing phrases seeped into the collective memory. As J. H. Plumb noted in his essay in A. J. P. Taylor's Churchill: Four Faces and the Man "Churchill the historian lies at the very heart of all historiography of the Second World War, and will always remain there… [we still] move down the broad avenues which he drove through war's confusion and complexity."

There are numerous shots of the campus including a view of the Carillon Tower as well as an impromptu football game. The women are shown in a fair number of internal housing shots where they can be seen preparing for finals as well as chumming around with banners and beer bottles in the background. There are a number of portraits of the women as well. There are two series of images depicting football games, one of which focuses on the marching band. Others show parties, parades for homecoming and the Rose Bowl victory, picnics, graduation day and more. A hearty slice of Wolverine life in the early post-war years. .

Photo Album]: Oregon Policeman's Crime Scenes Album

[Portland, Oregon] 1948 - An unusual photo album of 115 crime scene photos taken by a Portland, Oregon policeman that is equal parts gruesome and pedestrian. Oblong quarto. 75pp. String-tied stiff paper boards with "Photographs" in gilt on the front along with a decorative boarder. The photos range from 3.5" x 2.5" to 10" x 8", and fill all but the last 10 pages which are empty. Overall near fine with wear to the edges of the boards but the photos are fine. The album documents various crime scenes visited by a Portland patrolman from June to October in 1948. Half the album features images of car crashes, boating accidents, building fires, and bee swarms, many captioned below. The remaining photos feature a series of macabre images of the recently deceased. Some, like a murder victim dumped by the side of the road are disturbing, but hardly compare to the more chilling images of bodies recovered from the Willamette River and adjoining waterways. These "floaters," as he refers to them, are victims of suicides, murders, or accidental deaths. All are in various states of decay or bloat from the water, which makes for harrowing viewing. These too are captioned, some with gallows humor: "On July 1, investigation showed . When asked where he was going, he replied, 'Down to the Broadway Bridge, and see how G-- D--- deep the river is right in the middle.' He left no report as to depth of river." A compelling collection of photos rarely seen by the public and not for the faint of heart. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

A Mathematical Theory of Communication [ IN Bell System Technical Journal, July and October 1948 Issues ]

American Telephone and Telegraph Company, New York 1948 - First Edition. July: 379-592 pages, 8vo. ; October: 593-751, [1] pages, 8vo. Both original blue printed wrappers. July issue has stamps "Property of the Telephone Systems Training Section" on front wrapper and first page. Spine slanted and lightly sunned. A better than average copy. October issue has pencilled note at top of front wrapper, and is creased in the upper right corner (increasingly obvious as the issue progresses). Hard creases to rear cover. Otherwise clean. The Shannon article is in 2 parts, found on pp 379-423 (Jluy) and 623-656 (October). Wraps. Claude Shannon is credited with founding the field of information theory. Previous to the work done in this paper, the noise found on transmission lines was treated fundamentally differently. The previous solution was to "shout louder" so that the signal could be heard over the noise. With the introduction of the "bit" or binary digit, and the practical introduction of coding theory by Hamming and others, the start of modern transmission technologies were born. Without Shannon's work, the internet as we know it would not exist."In this paper it was shown that all information sources - telegraph keys, people speaking, television cameras and so on - have a 'source rate' associated with them which can be meausred in bits per second. The information can be transmitted over the channel if and only if the source rate does not exceed the channel capacity. This work on communication is generally considered to be Shannon's most important scientific contribution.Few other works of this century have had greater impact on science and engineering. By this landmark paper and his several subsequent papers on information theory he has altered most profoundly all aspects of communication theory and practice." (Shannon Collected Papers p. xiii)."What began as a study of transmission over telegraph lines [ by Nyquist and Hartley . ] was developed by Shannon into a general theory of communication applicable to telegraph, telephone, radio, television, and computing machines - in fact, to any system, physical or biological, in which information is being transferred or manipulated through time or space" (Aspray, 1985, pp. 119-22) Shannon's paper was also responsible for introducting the term 'bit' (for binary digit) into the published literature, and for giving the term it's current meaning." (Origins of Cyberspace 880)In this fundamentally important paper, Shannon laid the foundation for much of today's interconnected world. Finding these papers in decent original wrappers is getting more difficult. Bound copies are more available.Shannon, Collected Papers, #37. Origins of Cyberspace 880. Aspray, 1985, pp119-22.         The Discovery of India.

1948 - Calcutta: Signet Press. 1948. 8vo. Original black cloth-backed decorative paper covered-boards and wrapper, designed by Satyajit Ray; pp. xvi + 497; wrapper chipped with some loss to top of spine, otherwise very good indeed. Provenance: inscribed by Nehru to ffe,: "To Mr Denny/ with all good wishes/ Jawaharlal Nehru/ New Delhi - August 16 1949". From the library of George V. Denny, Jr. (1899-1959), broadcaster and host of the NBC radio programme “America’s Town Meeting of the Air", in which panel members of different political persuasions were quizzed by members of the audience. Nehru, as Prime Minister of India, appeared on the programme in 1949 when Denny brought it New Delhi as part of a round-the-world tour. Fifth printing. Written during Nehru's final imprisonment in 1942-46, this has been hailed as one of the finest books on Indian history, culture and politics. It is written from the viewpoint of a fighter for independence, and is more concerned with the philosophical and spiritual underpinnings of Indian culture than with recounting a historical narrrative. Nevertheless, Nehru follows the growth of the nation from the earliest records to the movement for independence from the British Empire. In doing so he provides a political basis for independence, and a rousing, often romantic message of hope for his supporters. This is one of the founding works of modern India. Satyajit Ray (1921-1992), later to be acclaimed as a film-maker, was working as a commercial artist in Calcutta when he was employed by D.K. Gupta of the newly founded Signet Press as a cover designer. Gupta gave him complete artistic freedom; as well as this dustwrapper, he also designed covers for Jim Corbett's Maneaters of Kumaon and the classic Bengali novel Pather Panchali, which he later turned into his first feature film.
