Parades abolies.

". Jean-Marc Campagne, Le Crapouillot, janvier 1959. Levi-Strauss's first book, his dissertation (thesis). Inscribed on upper wrap by Lévi-Strauss. Extremely Rare ! [wikipedia].

        Who Goes There?

Shasta Publishers 1948 - First book edition. This volume reprints 7 Campbell stories that appeared originally in pulp magazines in the 1930s. The book is fine, square and tight with no markings of any kind save for Campbell's signature on the ffep. The jacket, featuring stunning Hannes Bok artwork, has not been clipped and shows minor wear to the spine ends and the extremities, as well as minor fading to the spine. The front and back are bright and crisp. The title story in the collection is legendary as the basis for the 1951 film The Thing from Another World and also the 1982 John Carpenter remake, a film that is much better, in my opinion, than many people seem to think. Plus, tipped in is the original invoice for a shop in Toronto that ordered 5 copies and, after discount, paid a whopping 9 bucks for them. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

The title story has been filmed twice, the first in 1951 as "The Thing From Another World", one of the classic Science Fiction films of the 1950s (with James Arness in the title role).         Cry, the Beloved Country (Review copy)

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1948. First edition. Fine/Fine. A Fine copy of Paton's famous first novel. Review slip from the publisher laid in. Book Fine, bright and unread. In a Fine example of the fragile dust jacket with the spine just slightly faded. Nonetheless, a lovely copy and scarce in this condition. "Cry, the Beloved Country" follows the story of Stephen Kumalo, a black priest who goes to Johannesburg to help his sister -- and find his brother. The book is a critique of South African society, released just a year before Apartheid was instituted. It was adapted into two films, including one in 1995 that would star James Earl Jones and Richard Harris. "Cry, the Beloved Country" was enormously successful - it would become a worldwide bestseller with upwards of 15 million copies in over twenty languages. It was also a selection of Oprah's Book Club. "The finest novel I have ever read about the tragic plight of black-skinned people in a white man's world is "Cry, the Beloved Country" by Alan Paton." (Contemporary New York Times review). Fine in Fine. dust jacket.

        A Mathematical Theory of Communication

New York: American Telephone and Telegraph Company, 1948. First Edition. Cloth. Very Good. First Edition. 752 pages. Blue cloth binding with gilt spine lettering. Ex-libris "Thomas A. Prugh" with his name stamped on front pastedown endpaper. In The Bell System Technical Journal, Volume 27, 1948 (entire volume with four individual issues offered). Shannon's article is in 2 parts, found on pp 379-423 and 623-656. Original issue front wrappers are bound in (rear wrappers are not). The first issue has owner name inked on cover. Next three issues have a date stamp inked on cover, and previous owner markings inked out. An "AS 72" stamp in several places, including first page of first half of Shannon article. Otherwise very occasional markings in the text. Cloth. Claude Shannon is credited with founding the field of information theory. Previous to the work done in this paper, the noise found on transmission lines was treated fundamentally differently. The previous solution was to "shout louder" so that the signal could be heard over the noise. With the introduction of the "bit" or binary digit, and the practical introduction of coding theory by Hamming and others, the start of modern transmission technologies were born. Without Shannon's work, the internet as we know it would not exist. "What began as a study of transmission over telegraph lines [ by Nyquist and Hartley ... ] was developed by Shannon into a general theory of communication applicable to telegraph, telephone, radio, television, and computing machines - in fact, to any system, physical or biological, in which information is being transferred or manipulated through time or space" (Aspray, 1985, pp. 119-22) Shannon's paper was also responsible for introducting the term 'bit' (for binary digit) into the published literature, and for giving the term it's current meaning..." (Origins of Cyberspace 880) The previous owner Thomas A. Prugh was awarded 4 patents in the electronics and telecommunications areas, several of which were assigned to the US Army. In this fundamentally important paper, Shannon laid the foundation for much of today's interconnected world.
