Max Brand, including a complete four-issue run and partial three issue run of The Fabulous Faust, and the complete 10-issue run of The Faust Collector, along with other related ephemera. No, I do not think the situation there is hopeless' as long as there are some people as honest and intelligent as you seem to be [...] Incidentally, I may visit Germany once again, before returning to the U.S. - - which will be by the end of March.         A complete set of the first American edition of Churchill's monumental history of the Second World War

Winston Churchill, The Second World War (Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1948-1953) 6 Vols., 8vo. Volumes include: The Gathering Storm, (v, 784 pp.); Their Finest Hour, (xvi, 751 pp.); The Grand Alliance (xvi, 903 pp.); The Hinge of Fate (xvi, 1,000 pp.); Closing the Ring (xiii, 749 pp.); Triumph and Tragedy (xvi, 800 pp.). Half bound in brown leather on red cloth boards, ribbed spine with tilt titling and tooling, marbled pastedowns and endpapers. Spines cracked but binding intact, some very minor rubbing to boards, pages very clean. Following his staggering defeat at the polls in 1945, Churchill took solace in the pen, much as he had in the early 1930s when he found himself in the political wilderness with the defeat of the Conservatives in 1929. The volumes served two purposes: to redeem his reputation and to bolster his often shaky finances. (Even as Prime Minister, Churchill received only a nominal salary, and often had to take on add

Ghosts Along the Mississippi: The Magic of the Old Houses of Louisiana [Limited Autographed Louisiana Edition]

NY: Scribner's, 1948. Hardcover. Very Good. First Edition. Signed and numbered[258] on a limitation page tipped in before the half title. Very good in a better than usual jacket with some minor loss at the the extremities and light rubbing to the panels. Prelims foxed, otherwise internally fine. While the Bonanza reprint is beyond ubiquitous, the trade edition in a decent jacket is tough, with this signed limited being scarce and the only one we, and in conference with a few others who have many more years in the trade than us, have ever seen.

        Intruder in the Dust

Random House, New York 1948 - FIRST EDITION of Faulkner's powerful novel of Southern race relations, centered around the trial of a black farmer (Lucas Beauchamp) accused of murdering a white man. Intruder in the Dust "has the suspense and excitement that Faulkner can nearly always create and the disturbing emotional power that he can generate at his best. This subject of the complicated consequences of the mixture of white with Negro blood has been explored by Faulkner with remarkable intelligence and subtlety and variety of dramatic imagination; and Lucas himself, the black man who embarrasses a set of white relatives by having inherited the strongest traits of a common white ancestor, is one of the author's most impressive creations" (Edmund Wilson).         Le Phénomène Humain.

Rome, 28 October 1948. 4to (273 x 218mm). pp. (8), ii, 174. Printed wrapper, paperbacked spine. The extremely rare and unrecorded privately issued edition of Teilhard de Chardin's famous work on evolution. The work was forbidden by the church and was published after the death of the author in 1955 in an edition of 500 copies. This privately issued edition was mimeographed and distributed to a very few friends and scientists. The 'Foundation Teilhard de Chardin' in Paris does not have a copy of the work.//Pierre Teilhard de Chardin was born in 1881 and died in New York 1955. He was a Jesuit priest, paleontologist and one of the most important and original thinkers of the 20th century. The years 1908-1912 had been of critical intellectual formation. He was influenced by Henri Bergson's 'Evolution Creatice' and the book would be of a critical influence on Teilhard's thinking as it set his lifelong interest on the subject of evolution. Teilhard de Chardin became professor of geology at the Catholic Institute of Paris. However soon his ideas about evolution were considered unorthodox by his religious superiors and he was forbidden to teach. He stayed a long time in China doing extensive research on mammalian fossil fauna. He was an advisor to the Geological Survey of China and undertook many expeditions, one of which unearthed the skull of the Peking man (Sinanthropus pekinensis).//When he came back to Paris he was forbidden to write about any philosophical subject. The biggest blow however was in 1950 when the Church forbid him to publish his major work 'Le Phénomène Humain'. "The Teilhardian thesis is not a scientific theory but, rather, a philosophical world view based on certain themes drawn from the evolutionary synthesis and expressed in mystical, often poetic terms. Teilhard discerned in the historical development of the cosmos a law of 'complexity-consciousness', a notion reminiscent of Haeckel's views of the psychic unity of the organic world, only extended on a cosmic scale to include the inorganic world. According to Teilhard's law, each succesive stage in the evolutionary process is marked, first, by an increasing degree of complexity in organization and, second, by a corresponding increase in degree of conciousness. Evolution thus proceeds in orderly fashion from the inorganic to the organic, from less complex to more highly organized forms of life, through the process of hominization and beyond to 'planetization,' wherby all the peoples of 'Homo sapiens' are to achieve collectively an ultrahuman convergence, seen symbolically as a final 'Point Omega'" (DSB).//Teilhard went in exile in New York in 1951, where he was invited by the Wenner-Gren foundation, to continue his paleontogical work. He died on Easter Day April 10th. 1955.//The 'Avertissement' is dated: Paris, Mars 1947. The last pages of the work is dated: Rome, 28 Octobre 1948. Ladislaus Polgár in his 'Internationale Teilhard-Bibliographie' mentions the fact that some of his writings were reproducted and known to a small group 'die zwar vervielfältigt einem engeren Kreis bereits bekannt waren, aber erst nach seinem Tod veröffentlicht wurden".

THE TRAVELLING GRAVE AND OTHER STORIES

Sauk City, Wisconsin: Arkham House,. 1948. Octavo,. cloth.. Mild bump to upper spine end, a fine copy in fine dust jacket with. touch of rubbing to upper spine end. A very nice copy. This book is. rarely found signed or inscribed by Hartley. (#132179). First edition. Signed by Hartley on the front free endpaper: "With the best wishes of the / the writer, / Leslie Hartley." 2047 copies printed. Hartley scattered supernatural material throughout his short story collections, as well as the mainstream novels, such as THE GO-BETWEEN, for which he is better known. The present volume concentrates most of this material in one collection. The author worked mainly as a critic and reviewer, writing fiction on the side and bringing to it a sensibility that fused "a Hobbesian view of human nature [and] a childlike rapture ..." (Sullivan, The Penguin Encyclopedia of Horror and the Supernatural, p. 193) Such a fusing of horror and humor shows up in many masters of the fantastic, such as Dickens, Bierce, M. R. James and W. W. Jacobs. "Stylistically, Hartley is peerless, bringing to his genre fiction the same elegant precision that characterizes his major novels. The ghost story, he once wrote, is 'if not the highest, certainly the most exacting form of literary art.' No one was more exacting in the genre than Hartley himself." - ibid, p. 192.         Roads ---a Copy Signed By Seabury Quinn and Virgil Finlay ( Signed Twice By Finlay )

Sauk City, WI.: Arkham House, 1948, 1st Arkham House Edition, 1st Printing - -----------hardcover, The condition of the book is a solid Very Good with just a wee bit of age toning to paper and endpapers. This copy was exposed to smoke from a fire and has resulted in the page edges being darkened. I should mention though that there is no smoke smell. The dustjacket is one of the nicest that I have seen. This dustjacket is prone to rubbing to the black and gold stock. This copy has very minimal rubbing, with the rear white panel being nice and bright. Clearly a mylar protector was on the book at the time of the exposure to the smoke, this is a dandy copy of this classic Santa Claus story, this is one of the truly rare copies as it is signed by Seabury Quinn on the half-title page without inscription, as well this copy is signed and inscribed by Virgil Finlay on the half title page -----and, Finlay has also signed and inscribed the Finaly designed dustjacket, he signed the dustjacket on the front flap at the top near the price (Finlay's inscription is to a past Worldcon chair, and well known bookseller), a truly one of a kind item, anything signed by Quinn is rare, signed copies of the Arkham House edition of Roads is VERY RARE and to be combined with the signature of one of the truly great pulp artists ---- well, this is THEE copy , any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Borgers aan Lekkerkerker, 9 december 1948: 'Fusie Criterium-Libertinage: prachtig man.
