The Second World War

London: Cassell & Co. Ltd.,, 1948–54. [The Gathering Storm; Their Finest Hour; The Grand Alliance; The Hinge of Fate; Closing the Ring; Triumph and Tragedy.] 6 volumes, octavo. Recent burgundy morocco, titles and decoration to spines gilt, rule to boards gilt, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. With diagrams and tables throughout the text. An excellent set handsomely bound. First editions of Churchill's masterpiece, the single most important historical account of the Second World War. As Max Beloff observed, there was no statesman of the twentieth century "whose retrospective accounts of the great events in which he has taken part have so dominated subsequent historical thinking". A man who had always primarily made his living by his pen, Churchill was the only major war leader to give an authoritative account of the conflict, and his ringing phrases seeped into the collective memory. As J. H. Plumb noted: "Churchill the historian lies at the very heart of all historiography of the Second World War, and will always remain there… [we still] move down the broad avenues which he drove through war's confusion and complexity.

"A Perfect Day for Bananafish" [story in] The New Yorker, January 31, 1948

New York: The New Yorker Magazine. 1948. The complete story "A Perfect Day for Bananafish" in The New Yorker for January 31, 1948. Quarto. A newsstand edition, not obscured by a mailing label. Wrappers worn at the extremities, a small split at the foot of the spine, and very light waviness to several rear pages, very good. One of Salinger's best and most famous stories, and the first to feature the Glass family, centering on Seymour, the brilliant but troubled eldest sibling of Franny and Zooey. One of the most important stories of Salinger's career -- William Maxwell at The New Yorker, which had previously published only one other Salinger story, liked the initial draft but asked Salinger to revise it. Whereas he had previously just taken his writing elsewhere upon any initial rejection, this time he decided to work with editors Maxwell and Gus Lobrano. Upon its publication he was immediately hailed as an important new and singular voice in American fiction. The partnership with The New Yorker was sufficiently agreeable on both sides that the magazine signed him to a first-refusal contract, a great coup for any young writer. This story was later collected in Nine Stories but is scarce in its original format, particularly in collectible condition. A particularly desirable issue. .

To Be or not to Bop …

New York: Leo B. Workman,, 1948. Octavo. Wire-stitched in the original yellow textured card pictorial wraps. Author portrait to the title page and 10 pages of illustrations including full-page portraits of Bird, Diz and Monk. A little rubbed and with a few splash marks, middle bifolium loose, but overall very good. Third printing with an additional three paragraphs noting recent and upcoming record releases, and new names on the scene. This copy inscribed by the author on the title page to jazz historian Rudi Blesh; "To Rudi Blesh, good luck, a friend and fan, Sincerely Nard Griffin". Extremely uncommon - just 7 copies on OCLC, edition unspecified - one of the earliest detailed appreciations of Bop and its personnel, the title later appropriated by Gillespie for his autobiography. Odd that Griffin should be inscribing to Blesh who was very much a traditionalist, favoured journalist of "the Mouldy Figs." An unusual and attractive piece.

        Other Voices, Other Rooms

Random House, New York 1948 - 1st edition/1st printing. Stated First Printing of this author's first book, and signed by the Truman Capote on the half-title page (just his name; no inscription). This book is bound in beige cloth with unfaded red lettering on the spine. It is very clean, without handwriting or markings other than the author's signature, and very firmly bound. It has some slight shelfwear to the cloth at the very edges of the spine ends, and the lower front corner is lightly bumped. The dustjacket is clean, crisp and price intact ($2.75). It has some light edge wear, 2 completely closed short edge tears, a few small surface rubs, and the spine is very slightly darkened, extending onto a small area of Capote's shirt sleeve nearest the spine (otherwise his picture on the back panel is fine). Altogether a very handsome example of this scarce book and its dustjacket, and particularly scarce signed. ; Signed by Author [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        The City and the Pillar.

E.P. Dutton, New York 1948 - First edition of this landmark novel. Octavo, original black cloth. Signed by the author on the title page. Fine in a bright near fine dust jacket with a small chip to the crown but does not show the fading endemic to the spine panel. A very sharp copy. Stylistically influenced by Hemingway, this work, "is distinguished by its honesty and lack of self-pity; the central figure is unexceptional in every respect but his sexual choices" (Stringer, 690). "One of the best novels of its kind. . . . It isn't sentimental, and it is frank without trying to be sensational and shocking" (Christopher Isherwood). [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
