Typed letter signed ("Henry Moore"). Hoglands, Perry Green, Much Hadham, Herts., 15. V. 1948.

1948. Two pages, closely typed on two octavo sheets of letterhead. Folded for mailing, otherwise very good or better, with the original typed envelope. Enclosed in a folding half morocco clamshell case. A fine letter from the artist, addressed "Dear Miss [Irene] Rosen", in response to her enthusiastic letter written after a viewing of his sculptures at the Art Institute of Chicago (a carbon of her letter is present). In a substantially better than ordinary response by the sculptor to his public, and after apologizing for the delay in his response, Moore writes: "[...] As to your touching the pieces of sculpture at Chicago, you were right and the guards were wrong. If you can get a better idea of the volume of the mass, of the depth of the space and of the hardness of the material by touching a sculpture as well as looking at it, you must do so. I much enjoyed seeing a work of mine which had been in a museum in a mining town in England for many years and which had become dirtied in places where the miners, dropping into the museum on the way home for work, had run their hands over it". In response to her query about the possibility of reproductions of his sculptures, he writes "As to reproductions, I don't think they are worth making unless they're good; it's the same thing with pictures [...] reproductions of sculptures [...] can't be any good unless each cast is worked on by the artist -- and no artist has time to do that to a large edition of reproductions [...]". He details how his editions of bronzes are produced, comments on their availability and price ("which is, I imagine, more than you can afford to pay"), and responds to her complaints about the inadequacy of the reproductions of photographs in J.J. Sweeney's book: "In feeling the limitations of photographs you are certainly on the right lines [...] a reproduction in a book can never have the same beauty or fidelity as an actual photographic print [...]". He concludes in appreciation of her "genuine and intelligent interest" and notes that he his sending her separately a photograph (not present) of his latest carving. Signed in ink, "Henry Moore".

        The Second World War

London: Cassell & Co. Ltd.,, 1948?54. 6 volumes, octavo. Original black cloth, titles gilt to spines, top edge red, grey endpapers decorated with a design that alternates a lion rampant with the initials WSC. In the typographical dust jackets with background design as per the endpapers. Maps and diagrams, some folding. Each volume with the bookplate of the Association of Men of Kent and Kentish Men. Top edges faded as usual, jackets a little rubbed, and a touch sunned at the spines, which are slightly crumpled at ends, but the cloth unspotted and the text-blocks clean, a very good set indeed. First editions, first impressions, except vol. II, which is the fourth edition of 1954; signed in full by the author on the half-title of vol. I and initialled in the same place in the others, for the Association of Men of Kent and Kentish Men, at the request of Wykeham Cornwallis, 2nd baron Cornwallis (1892?1982). Together with a one-page letter on the letterhead of La Pausa, Churchill's literary agent Emery Reves's house. In the letter, dated 9 February 1956, Churchill tells Lord Cornwallis, president of the association, that he "would be happy to do as you ask", signing the set as requested, that he is "returning to England for some days on February 10, so perhaps you would let me have the books sometime before I leave the country again towards the end of this month", and concluding that he is "indeed complimented by the wish of Kent County Society" for him to sign the books. After he left office in 1955 Churchill spent long periods with Reves and his partner Wendy at their home in the Alpes-Maritime. On this occasion he was there for a month. "He returned for another 11 substantial visits during the next three and half years, a total of 54 weeks" (Jenkins, Churchill, p. 904), during which time he worked on the completion of English-Speaking Peoples. At La Pausa, originally built by Churchill's friend Bendor, 2nd duke of Westminster, for his lover Coco Chanel, Churchill "was made an immensely welcome guest ? the central purpose of the Reveses' lives became the entertainment of Churchill", who much enjoyed "the poetic justice" of sharing in the "elegant luxury" which came from Reves's "highly profitable marketing of Churchill's post-war writings". An extremely appealing association copy, inscribed for a proud Man of Kent by an adoptive, but equally proud Kentish Man. Churchill had been smitten by the view across the Weald of Kent from Chartwell when he first visited in 1922, and the house and estate became one of the loves of his life, famously he declared that "A day away from Chartwell is a day wasted". Lord Cornwallis was born in Linton, east of the Medway. He is probably best remembered for his role in creating the County of Kent squadron of the RAF during the Battle of Britain. Inspired by a meeting with Squadron Leader Bob Stanford Tuck when he was shot down over his home near Maidstone, Cornwallis established the Kent County Spitfire Fund, which raised £100,000 for the purchase of planes in a little over a year, which generosity he acknowledged with an exhortation to "remember that when you look upward to the skies, it may be your squadron that is defending the gateway of England and ask for God's blessing and protection for those glorious men who are riding on the wings of the White Horse of Kent".

        THE NAKED AND THE DEAD

New York:: Rinehart and Company. (1948).. First edition of the author's first book. SIGNED by him on the title page. Acclaimed as one of the best to come out of WWII. A Burgess 99 title. The fragile black paper-covered boards showing edgewear and subtle staining to rear board, otherwise good to very good in the scarce first-issue dust jacket with the introductory blurb by Stanley Rinehart comparing Mailer favorably with Hemingway and others. Dust jacket edge rubbed, chipped on one corner, and with lightly rubbed creases where we assume it was once folded to quarters, but still bright and about very good for this jacket. .

Painting as a Pastime, the first edition, finely bound in full red morocco by Sangorski & Sutcliffe

London: Odhams Press Limited, Ernest Benn Limited, 1948. First edition, first printing. Full leather. This is the British first edition, first printing of Painting as a Pastime, Churchill's essay about his famous hobby. This copy is finely bound in full red morocco by Sangorski & Sutcliffe. The elegant goatskin binding features a hubbed and gilt ruled spine.  There are gilt rule borders on the covers, gilt rules on the binding edges, gilt page edges, and gilt ruled turn-ins framing striking, marbled endpapers.  Even the gold, red, and black head and foot bands are executed with noteworthy skill and aesthetic effect.  ?Bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, London, England? is gilt-stamped on each lower front pastedown.  This venerable firm, founded by Francis Sangorski and George Sutcliffe in 1901, became recognized as one of the leading bookbinders in London.  Like Churchill himself, Sangorski & Sutcliffe endured the First World War, the Great Depression, the Second World War, and post-war austerity.  This truly gorgeous example of the fine binder?s craft is a reminder to collectors that not all fine bindings are created equal.  Condition is better than near fine. The binding remains bright, clean, tight, and square, with just a few trivial scuffs. The contents are exceptional for the edition, crisp and bright with none of the typical spotting and no previous ownership marks. The contents of Painting as a Pastime had been printed in The Strand Magazine as early as 1921, but it was not until 1948 - nearly three decades after his first published words on the subject - that Churchill consented to a book about his hobby and passion. Soldier, writer, and politician, Churchill was perhaps an unlikely painter. Nonetheless he proved both a prolific and passionate one. Churchill first took up painting during the First World War. May 1915 saw Churchill scapegoated for failure in the Dardanelles and slaughter at Gallipoli and forced from his Cabinet position at the Admiralty. By November 1915 Churchill was serving at the Front, leading a battalion in the trenches. But during the summer of 1915, as he battled depression, he rented Hoe Farm in Surrey, which he frequented with his wife and three children. One day in June, Churchill noticed his brother's wife, Gwendeline, sketching in watercolors. Churchill borrowed her brush and swiftly found solace in painting, which would be a passion and source of release and renewal for the remaining half century of his long life. Winston's wife Clementine had opposed the idea of her husband's opining in print on the subject, concerned that he might be belittled by professional painters and others. Clementine aside, it may be that Churchill's comparative reticence on the subject was to keep something personal in the great and turbulent sweep of his otherwise tremendously public life. He wrote, "Painting is a friend who makes no undue demands, excites to no exhausting pursuits, keeps faithful pace even with feeble steps, and holds her canvas as a screen between us and the envious eyes of Time or the surly advance of Decrepitude" (Painting as a Pastime, p. 13). Whatever Churchill's reason for penning and ultimately consenting to book publication of Painting as a Pastime complete with images of his paintings, the relatively few words he offered on the subject add something truly personal and different to the great body of his writing.         Alphabet for Adults (First Edition, inscribed to Bebe and Louis Barron)

Beverly Hills, CA: Copley Galleries, 1948. First Edition. First Edition. One of 500 copies issued. INSCRIBED by the author and artist on the front endpaper: "For Charlotte [Bebe] and Louis Barron. Cordially, Man Ray, Hollywood, 1949." An exceptional avant-garde association. Around this time the Barrons were beginning to experiment with committing electronic sounds as music to magnetic tape, and were ultimately not only pioneers in that field, but its inventors. One year after the date of this inscription, they would compose their first piece, "Heavenly Menagerie," and they would go on to produce the first electronic film score, for the seminal 1956 science fiction film, "Forbidden Planet" (credited as "tonalities" rather than "music" at the time, due to union rules). The Barrons' earliest compositions were slow and laborious, as their early work preceded the digital age, and involved building circuits and tape splicing to create even the smallest sequences of sound. In the decades that followed, electronic composition has become a worldwide phenomenon in every musical category. A tremendous association between pioneers in two major fields of twentieth century artistic endeavor.

The Second World War is Churchill's history of the epic 20th Century struggle that was so indelibly stamped by his leadership. Seldom, if ever, has history endowed a statesman with both singular ability to make history, and singular ability to write it. As with so much of what Churchill wrote, The Second World War is not "history" in the strictly academic, objectivist sense, but rather Churchill's perspective on history. In his March 1948 introduction to the first volume, Churchill himself made the disclaimer, "I do not describe it as history... it is a contribution to history..." Nonetheless the compelling fact remains, as stated by Churchill himself, "I am perhaps the only man who has passed through both the two supreme cataclysms of recorded history in high Cabinet office... I was for more than five years in this second struggle with Germany the Head of His Majesty's government. I write, therefore, from a different standpoint and with more authority than was possible in my earlier books." Certainly The Second World War may be regarded as an intensely personal and inherently biased history. Nonetheless, Churchill's work remains iconic and a vital part of the historical record. Richard Langworth calls the six-volume epic "indispensable reading for anyone who seeks a true understanding of the war that made us what we are today." The first volume of Churchill?s history was published in 1948, three years after the war ended. The sixth and final volume was published in 1954, during Churchill?s second and final premiership. Please note that this set may require additional postage. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A240.4(I-VI).a, Woods/ICS A123(ba), Langworth p.264

PHILIPS' NEW IMPERIAL ATLAS: WITH A DESCRIPTIVE GAZETTEER-INDEX OF OVER 100,000 NAMES

London: George Philip & Son, Limited, 1948. A large folio binding, in bound in black half morocco over maroon cloth boards stamped with ornate gold titling; raised bands with gold titling to the spine. With 64 numbered leaves (in actually 81 leaves) of maps, mostly double-pages, with some folding. The Atlas, presenting an accurate survey of the world, and its "imposing size ... makes possible the employment throughout of large scales, [so that] the maps present a considerable amount of topographical detail". Special prominence has been given to the United Kingdom and the scattered territories in the overseas Dominions, and to the countries of Europe "the scene of never-ending political changes". The main features are grouped thusly: 1. Political maps drawn on a large scale; 2. Physical maps of the World, British Isles, the Alps, and a four-sheet map of Central Europe; 3. Maritime maps, physically colored; 4. Polar maps on large scales showing Arctic and Antarctic regions; and 5. A Gazatteer-Index with over 100,000 place names. The maps are "finely engraved on copper plates" and are beautifully colored. The front board has been discreetly reinforced, and binding is quite bright and sturdy. A splendid production, and not common in this edition, with only four holdings located on OCLC, There is a short closed tear to the Preface leaf, and a small repaired snag to the cloth at the front board.

        The Second World War

London: Cassell & Co. Ltd.,, 1948?54. [The Gathering Storm; Their Finest Hour; The Grand Alliance; The Hinge of Fate; Closing the Ring; Triumph and Tragedy.] 6 volumes, octavo. Recent burgundy morocco, titles and decoration to spines gilt, rule to boards gilt, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. With diagrams and tables throughout the text. An excellent set. First editions of Churchill's masterpiece, the single most important historical account of the Second World War. As Max Beloff observed, there was no statesman of the twentieth century "whose retrospective accounts of the great events in which he has taken part have so dominated subsequent historical thinking". A man who had always primarily made his living by his pen, Churchill was the only major war leader to give an authoritative account of the conflict, and his ringing phrases seeped into the collective memory. As J. H. Plumb noted: "Churchill the historian lies at the very heart of all historiography of the Second World War, and will always remain there? [we still] move down the broad avenues which he drove through war's confusion and complexity.

        Declaration of Israel's Independence

1948 - [BEN-GURION, David]. "The Declaration of the Establishment of the State of Israel." IN: Israel's Provisional Government Official Bulletin No. 1. WITH: Official Bulletins No. 2-3. Tel Aviv: 5 Iyar 5708 [May 14, 1948]-22 Iyar 5708 [May 31, 1948]. Three quarto sheets, folded in half, plus one extra half sheet, each leaf measuring 8 by 13 inches; pp. 14. Housed in a custom chemise and clamshell box. $15,000.First printing of Israel's Declaration of Independence, together with two rare successive issues of the Official Bulletin from the same month.May 14, 1948 was the final day of the British Mandate over Palestine, and as that day approached, various nations angled to determine the future, or lack thereof, of the proposed Jewish state. In an effort to finally bring their dream of a Jewish homeland to fruition, Jewish leaders seized the initiative and began preparations to create a government for a Zionist state. Spearheaded by David Ben-Gurion, leaders "established a 13-member National Administration and a National Council of 37 members, which would, upon the departure of the British Mandatory forces, become the provisional government and legislature of the Jewish State". A committee of five""David Remez, [Felix] Rosenblueth, Moshe Shapira, [Moshe] Shertok, and Aharon Zisling""was appointed to draft the Declaration of Independence. The draft submitted by the committee on May 13 consisted of 22 articles". It was criticized as too long and flowery, and the final wording was entrusted to Ben-Gurion, Rabbi Y. L. Fishman (Maimon), A. Zisling, and M. Shertok. During the same evening Ben-Gurion prepared a final draft, which was approved by his colleagues on the committee." Debate on the final wording the next day, May 14, was fierce, with concerns about whether or not a state language should be named, the extent to which religion should enter into the document, and whether the borders of the nation should be delineated. Ultimately, it was decided that the document contain a brief history of the historical precedents for the foundation of the new nation, a description of the various authorities supporting the land's establishment, the reasons for its establishment, and a clear explanation of the temporary government that would lead it until a permanent structure was formed. The majority approved the document, and Ben-Gurion then "requested that the Declaration be adopted unanimously in a second vote, whatever objections members might have to a particular item or aspect, and this was done" (Encyclopedia Judaica). That same day, at 4:30 pm on Friday, May 14, 1948, David Ben-Gurion proclaimed Israel's independence, saying: "I shall read you the Foundation Scroll of the State of Israel, which has been approved in first reading by the National Council." His recitation of Israel's Declaration of Independence was broadcast throughout the entirety of the new state of Israel, and the nation, now a fait accompli, was quickly recognized by the United States and the USSR, assuring its acceptance. The National Council then immediately became the Provisional Council of State, with Ben-Gurion at its head, and it published the Declaration as its first official bulletin. That day has been celebrated every year since as Yom ha Azma'ut, Israeli Independence Day. First Israeli government printings of all three bulletins. The Declaration's equivalent in U.S. history would be the John Dunlap broadside of the Declaration of Independence. Declaration with names of the 37 members of the Temporary Government, headed by David Ben-Gurion, listed on page 2, rear page blank except for printer's name. Text in Hebrew. Double hole-punch along right margins.A bit of usual toning, signatures divided or partially divided into leaves. Near-fine condition. [Attributes: First Edition]

47th Street [Inscribed, Signed, and Contemporarily Dated]

Prairie City, Illinois: The Decker Press, 1948. Hardcover. Near Fine/near fine. A Near Fine copy (small spot at bottom of rear board, lower corners tapped, minor shelf wear, some spotting to the closed page block's edges, slight leftward lean -- ironic perhaps), in a Very Good +dust jacket (age toning, small spot at bottom of rear panel, some spotting to the verso, light soiling and light edge wear) INSCRIBED, SIGNED, AND CONTEMPORARILY DATED BY FRANK MARSHALL DAVIS on the title page as follows: "To / Bill McBride / from a fellow artist / but of another field / Frank Marshall Davis / July 24, 1948". Davis was a poet, journalist, and political and social activist and former editor of the Atlanta Daily World, turning the paper from a semiweekly paper to the first successful black daily newspaper. Davis also served as a Member of the National Executive Board of the Civil Rights Congress, cited by the Truman Administration as a subversive organization. The Civil Rights Congress also was named a Communist Front in the House Un-American Activities Committee Report. Davis' work was resurrected during Amiri Baraka's (aka Everett LeRoi Jones) important Black Arts Movement. "47th Street" is named for Chicago's street of the same name. A very scarce book itself, signed copies are scarcer still. A Near Fine copy of an extremely scarce book in a Very Good + dust jacket, INSCRIBED, SIGNED, AND CONTEMPORARILY DATED BY FRANK MARSHALL DAVIS. SCARCE.
