        Ler dla canpane

The rare first edition of 165 copies, the author's calligraphic text throughout, illustrated with 6 original engravings by Jean Dubuffet. With an exceptional and very rare inscription from Jean Dubuffet to Hans Bellmer : "à Hans Bellmer amitiés Jean Dubuffet".This copy is housed within a folding box in full ochre calf lined with velvet, reproducing the calligraphy of the upper cover. Covers and spine lightly and marginally sunned as usual, discreet, skilful restoration to margins at head and foot of plates. The first work by Jean Dubuffet, being calligraphic phonetically-spelled words stenciled (with linocut illustrations) on wood from crates and the bottom of camembert boxes, then hand-printed by the author on newspaper with 6 engravings in a run of 150 copies, plus 15 copies with 2 further plates, spattered with ink for "le samatere detrase etdanprinte".Those 'lovers of marks and spots', however, should bear in mind that as far as we know Dubuffet only inscribed "ordinary" copies to his friends, in keeping with the very concept that dominates this founding work of Art Brut.In his 1962 preface to Vignettes lorgnettes, which reproduces the engravings from Ler dla Campagne, Dubuffet recalled the origins of his first book: "with their makeshift printing methods, these little works were the exact opposite of the received wisdom of bibliophilia. They were as far as possible from the frigid solemnity of the thick and costly paper of luxury printing, the typography of the great publishers, the full margins and the profusion of endpapers and blank pages; they were printed in very humble circumstances with scant resources, in small format on the cheapest sort of newspaper. It seemed to us (it seems to me still) that even so they were just as attractive as the books usually sold to book collectors."This copy, inscribed to Hans Bellmer, is rare and precious testimony to the major influence of the Surrealists on Dubuffet's thinking and the emergence of Art Brut. Though both art historians and biographers are in agreement in highlighting this link unambiguously, there are in fact few actual traces of the interaction between Dubuffet and the Surrealists. It was nonetheless under the aegis, and with the full collaboration, of André Breton that he founded the Compagnie de l'Art Brut in 1948. "The part laid out for you, as you say, in this Compagnie de l'Art Brut, is yours by absolute right, since your ideas, your temperament, your impulses definitely played a big part in guiding our spirit in all this; and it's absolutely right and proper that a place should be set for you at our table - had you not wanted to take it, it would have stayed empty, like the seat reserved for the angel," (letter of the 28th May 1948). This relationship, the first we know of between Dubuffet and a Surrealist (not an ex-Surrealist or a Surrealist to be) gave rise to an immediate warmth between the two artists, who developed several projects together (among them an Almanach de l'Art Brut). But from 1951 onwards, their relationship cooled and Breton stopped supporting the Compagnie; the Almanach, although finished, was never actually published. The failure of this project and of the budding friendship between the two artists contributed to the definitive rupture between the two movements and to a growing mutual mistrust. In branding Art Brut the "art of madmen," and trying thus to maintain the supremacy of Surrealism over this 'offshoot', Breton undoubtedly betrayed Dubuffet's hopes of a natural affiliation between the two movements.Nonetheless, it was a price Dubuffet had to pay to become one of the major artists of the second half of the 20th century, while Surrealism only barely survived the war and the intransigent behaviour of its founder. The idea of Art Brut as Dubuffet put it from 1948 on could not really locate itself in any theoretical continuum, nor accept any artistic basis:"Art worksowe nothing (or as little as possible) to the imitation of the works of art we see in the museums, salons and galleries; rather, they call out to the very depths of human experience and the most spontaneous and personal creativity possible. These are works that their creator has taken entirelyfrom their own depths," (Jean Dubuffet, Notice sur la Compagnie de l'art brut [September 1948], in Prospectusvolume I, p. 489).This (necessary) distancing and the frequently anti-Surrealist positions that served to highlight the lack of historical elements linking the two movements have constrained writers and biographers to broad guesswork, based on the obvious similarities in the movements' artists and ideas. Aside from this short friendship with Breton, the Surrealists barely appear in biographies of Dubuffet. But this friendly inscription to one of the most important Surrealist artists on this earliest of pieces is testimony to Dubuffet's proximity to other members of the movement - a proximity that nonetheless remains a mystery, since Dubuffet deliberately 'forgot' his links to Surrealism, of which he is, despite everything, one of the most important heirs and successors.  L'art brut Paris 1948 13,5x19cm agrafé sous coffret-étui

Two Autograph Letters Signed, 4to, New York, June 9, 1948. With full signature in return address of transmittal envelope, and Autograph Letter Signed, 4to, New York, July 1, 1948

      - Johnson thanks his correspondent for writing and thanks him for his "kind and generous favor in considering my efforts in the music world for your collection." However, he asks his that "Under the Bamboo Tree" be withdrawn as a 'Caption' for "personal reasons of utmost importance." He is referring to the sheet music he published. He offers others instead, mentioning other of his most well-known and well-respected works, "Lazy Man," "Castle on the Nile" or "The Congo Love Song." He says, "But my real choice would be 'Lift Every Voice and Sing' (the Negro National Anthem) sung by school children and 'grown ups' for more than fifty years, and still is being sung." The Negro National Anthem he refers to was first performed in 1900 in Florida where he was born. Signed, "J. Rosamond Johnson." In the second letter to the same correspondent on Johnson's printed personalized stationery with ASCAP insignia in upper left corner, Johnson apologizes for not having sent "the enclosed to you sooner." Signed, "J. Rosamond Johnson." John Rosamond Johnson with brother James Weldon formed a successful team of lyricist and composer. In additions to their well known anthem "Lift Every Voice and Sing," are the many popular hits they sold as sheet music such as "Under the Bamboo Tree." Our research indicates this letter is unpublished. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

The Second World War - C C Wood's copies - Proof-reader to Churchill - SIGNED to volume 3 by Churchill

Cassell, 1948 First Edition, First Printings, published by Cassell and Co., 1948. From the library of Charles Carlyle Wood, proofreader of this work for a new corrected edition (or indeed editions, judging from the span of dates). Six volumes. 8vo. Publisher's black cloth titled in gilt to spines. Very good indeed in like dustwrappers, light toning to spine panels, slight shelfwear, strong and handsome. Internally clean. Inscribed by Churchill to C. C. Wood, his proofreader, in Volume 3: "For C.C. Wood from Winston S. Churchill (not to be read by you) 1950". Also present (and indeed present in all volumes in varying forms; alongside a copious number of content changes, proof marks and marginal annotations is "Examined, no corrections marked herein May 1st 1952" in Wood's hand. All volumes are annotated as "marked copies" if nothing else, Volumes I, II and IV bearing ink notations to the dustwrappers, and all volumes having at least one or two corrections marked in the text. Volume I; "The Gathering Storm" is famously a mass of errors and inconsistencies, the publicising of which were catalytic in Churchill following Bill Deakin's advice and passing the job of proofreading on to Wood (who had previously worked as part of the Churchill machine during the production of "Marlborough" in the 1930's and would continue to be the sand in the gears for a good few years subsequently. The process of proofreading at Chartwell was known rather ruefully as "Wooding." This copy of Volume I is packed to the gunwales with corrections ranging from the repositioning of maps and charts, through simple corrections of spelling and punctuation (Churchill and Wodd differed vociferously on this subject, Wood was the original Grammar Nazi) by way of date, place and name corrections through to the occcasional plea for clarification. Also present in the volume are a hnumber of rather censorious editorial pencil comments in another hand; these are somewhat critical of WSC's honesty and integrity and comment on his gernal reliability in terms of historical accuracy. Also laid in to the prelims of Volume one is a copy (or mimeograph) of a typed note from Wood to Churchill thanking him in surprisingly florid fashion for the inscribed Volume III. Examples detailing the mechanical workflow of Churchill's literary team are rare, especially in the case of what could be considered his most important work. An impressive and unique record.[removed][removed]

The Second World War, full set of six British first editions

London: Cassell and Company, Ltd., 1948. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. This is an exceptionally well-preserved full set of British first editions of The Second World War, Churchill's history of the epic 20th Century struggle that was so indelibly stamped by his leadership. Jacketed British first edition sets in marginal condition are not uncommon. However, the coarse cloth bindings of this edition proved susceptible to soiling and mildew, the contents (printed on post-war "Economy Standards" paper) proved highly prone to spotting, the red-stained top edges are most often severely faded, and the dust jackets proved exceptionally vulnerable to pronounced spine toning. Consequently, superior jacketed sets have become scarce. This is such a set, near fine plus first editions in near fine or better dust jackets. The coarse black cloth bindings are immaculate, tight, and square with nicely rounded spines, sharp corners, bright spine gilt, and no appreciable wear. The contents are uniformly clean and bright. We find no previous ownership marks and, particularly noteworthy, absolutely no spotting. Even the fore and bottom edges are beautifully clean. The red topstain remains strong across the set, with some of the volumes more dark pink than red but still quite respectable. All six dust jackets are clean, unclipped and entirely complete, with no losses. We note only fractional wear at a few spine ends. All six dust jackets have been spared the typical pronounced spine toning; the red subtitles remain bright and shelf appearance is excellent. The Volume I dust jacket ? typically quite challenging to find in superior condition ? is among the brightest copies we have seen. All six dust jackets are protected with removable, archival quality clear covers. Seldom, if ever, has history endowed a statesman with both singular ability to make history, and singular ability to write it. As with so much of what Churchill wrote, The Second World War is not "history" in the strictly academic, objectivist sense, but rather Churchill's perspective on history. In his March 1948 introduction to the first volume, Churchill himself made the disclaimer, "I do not describe it as history... it is a contribution to history..." Nonetheless the compelling fact remains, as stated by Churchill himself, "I am perhaps the only man who has passed through both the two supreme cataclysms of recorded history in high Cabinet office... I was for more than five years in this second struggle with Germany the Head of His Majesty's government. I write, therefore, from a different standpoint and with more authority than was possible in my earlier books." Certainly The Second World War may be regarded as an intensely personal and inherently biased history. Nonetheless, Churchill's work remains seminal, iconic, and a vital part of the historical record. Richard Langworth calls the six-volume epic "indispensable reading for anyone who seeks a true understanding of the war that made us what we are today." Please note that this set may require additional postage. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A240.4(I-VI).a, Woods/ICS A123(ba), Langworth p.264.

The Laying of the Foundation Stone of the New Chamber of the House of Commons by the Speaker 26th May 1948.

London: printed for H.M. Stationery Office by the Curwen Press Ltd.,, 1948. Foolscap folio. Original green buckram over bevelled boards, title gilt to the spine and front board, quadruple fillet gilt panel to both boards, Palace of Westminster portcullis centre-tool gilt the lower. 5 collotype plates with two images per plate, title page printed in green. A little rubbed, a couple of small areas of bubbling on the boards, else very good. First and only edition, with the limitation statement: "twenty-four copies ? printed on hand-made paper for presentation to His Majesty the King, the Library of the House of Commons and those who took part in the ceremony". Copac shows just five locations in the UK: BL, Oxford, Cambridge, Guildhall, and Chartwell; OCLC adds Houghton Library, Harvard, Universities of Toronto and Alberta, and Milwaukee Public Library Service. The exact details of publication seem somewhat muddied, Cohen explains that "the normal edition of the work , for distribution to the Members of Parliament, was in wrappers. By order of the Speaker, however, 24 copies were printed and bound in full green morocco by Sangorski and Sutcliffe for presentation ? I have also examined a cloth-bound copy. A folder of loose photographs of the occasion (reproduced by collotype at the Chiswick Press) was attached to the inside back cover". Which is much the same as Woods's account of the piece, but does not clarify the status of the present copy. This is the second such copy examined by this cataloguer. The text reprints Churchill's speech as Leader of the Opposition: "The House of Commons is a living and deathless entity; it survived, unflinching, the tests and hazards of war; it preserved our constitutional liberties under our ancient monarchy in a manner which has given a sense of stability, not only in this island, but as an example to nations in many lands". He features in all but two of the images.

        History of the Tuna Club

Tuna Club 1948 - Arthur Macrate Jr.'s "HISTORY OF THE TUNA CLUB, Avalon, Santa Catalina Island, California" . Published by the Tuna Club, 1948, FIRST EDITION 1948 True First Edition of this great history of the AVALON TUNA CLUB, at Santa Catalina Island, California (Founded in 1898). 197 pages, with 17 chapters. Contents includes: Dedication; Acknowledgements; Table of Contents; List of Illustrations (Of which there are 26, with many historic photos of record game fish, and sights around Catalina); Introduction; Prologue; Fin De Siecle; Early Days; Constitution, Incorporation, and By-Laws; The Club House; In Memoriam; Affiliated Clubs; The Annual Tournaments; Flags and Buttons (Awards); Guides and Boatmen; Tuna, Marlin, and Broadbill; Tackle and Baits; Fishing Grounds; San Clemente (Island); Conservation; War Years; Some Interesting Fights; Club Records: Epilogue, Appendix, Bibliography, and Index. The Santa Catalina Avalon Tuna Club was founded by Charles Frederick Holder (Author of GAME FISHES OF THE WORLD, RECOLLECTIONS OF A SPORTSMAN ON THE PACIFIC COAST, BIG GAME AT SEA, THE BOY ANGLER, THE CHANNEL ISLANDS OF CALIFORNIA, THE LOG OF A SEA ANGLER, LIFE IN THE OPEN, and others) . Holder had a special place in Big Game Fishing History, as he invented the sport of BIG GAME FISHING in 1898 when he took a tuna of 183 pounds on a rod and reel (See Scan) It took 3hr. and 45 minutes, and they were towed 10 miles in their boat by the tuna. All previous Big Game fishing was done with hand lines. The news went out by word of mouth and by telegraph that the sport of Big Game Fishing had been born. Later, the first broadbill swordfish ever landed on rod and reel was caught by a member of the club here (See Scan). Charles Holder also founded the Rose Parade in Pasadena California, and was prominent in the Valley Hunt Club, in Pasadena. This history of the Club was written to honor the Fiftieth anniversary of the club. The Golden Jubilee. The club's purpose is and has always been to preserve Big Game Fishing as a sport in which the skill alone of the angler and the boatman is matched against the native cunning and strength of the fish. These men went forth to catch Tuna that could exceed 200 pounds, Marlin, and Broadbill swordfish on wooden or cane rods and reels. The early reels did not have a drag with which to slow the run of the fish. They used leather pads to press against the spool. The club is still in existence today, and continues to use strict limitations and rules on the size of tackle and lines to be used in taking Tuna, Swordfish, Marlin, Dorado, etc. The tuna were called Leaping Tuna and could at times be seen jumping over the fishing boats, in their pursuit of Flying Fish (Their favorite meal). The anglers at times used silk Chinese kites to help carry their baits outside the wake of the fishing launches, as this made them more acceptable to their quarry. Contributors (And/or members of the club) include Kip Farrington (PACIFIC GAME FISHING, ATLANTIC GAME FISHING), Van Campen Heilner (OUR AMERICAN GAME BIRDS, A BOOK ON DUCK SHOOTING), O.H.P. Rodman, George C. Thomas Jr. (GAME FISH OF THE PACIFIC) George C. Thomas III, and F.G. Menke. The book includes records of fish caught, including Tuna, Marlin, Broadbill Swordfish, Black Sea Bass, Yellowtail, White Sea Bass, Albacore, Dolphin, and others. Believe me when I say that this book is a treat for the eyes. These copies do not come along very often. If you have an interest in Big Game Fishing, then this is the Holy Grail of angling club histories. This is a scarce book. One of only 4 available on the internet. This copy is Near Fine, in a burgundy leather binding that has some minor scuffs, with gilt titles on the front cover. There is NO internal marking or writing of any kind. The hinges and the binding of the signatures are quite tight, with no signs of separation [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        PIRATE, THE (1948)

MGM 1948 - Vintage original 41 x 27" (102 x 68 cm.) one sheet poster, USA. Judy Garland, Gene Kelly, Walter Slezak, Gladys Cooper, Nicholas Brothers, Reginald Owen, George Zucco, dir: Vincente Minnelli: MGM. One of the grandest, most colorful and most controversial of all MGM musicals. Ahead of its time, the film is now a cult classic. Based on the S.N. Behram play which starred Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne on Broadway, stars Judy Garland and Gene Kelly were required to become grand comedians in acting style. They were up to it, and Cole Porter wrote an entirely original score for Garland to sing and Kelly to dance to. The film was in production for a year due to re-writes, re-structuring, song replacements and Judy's illnesses. Though it was the only Garland film to lose money, the critics appreciated it and it was made at a time when studios were willing to experiment and push the genre of the musical to new heights. This copy of the one sheet is folded, un-backed and in original condition with extremely rich color. There are tiny tears at the fold edges and a few along the blank white border edge. There is one tiny chip near the top right corner and there are several pin holes at each of the four corners. NEAR FINE.

        Konvolut Pataphysique.

Cm 60 x 46,6. pp. 2. Molto Buono (Very Good). .
