        Creative Illustration

New York: Viking Press. 1947. First. First edition, first printing. Small folio. Some spotting and foxing to the boards, a faint stain on the rear board, and the rear free endpaper creased, thus about very good in an attractive, very good dustwrapper with a faint corresponding stain on the rear panel, and some light foxing on the spine. Despite the litany of small flaws, a bright and attractive copy of an important work on illustration by an artist notable in his own right. .

        A Streetcar Named Desire

New York: New Directions / Laughlin, 1947. First edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/Very Good. 1947, First Edition, first printing of Williams' most famous and lasting play. Hardcover in dust jacket -- lavender/purple boards and matching jacket designed by Alvin Lustig. Near Fine in a Very Good dust jacket. A sharp, square, clean copy with only minimal shelfwear to the spine ends and corners. The DJ sunned along the spine (as usual), but the title is bold and the coloring still retains a faint purple hue; mild sunning along the top edge of the front and rear panels as well, another common flaw; two 1/2-inch closed snags to the edges of the rear panel; light wear to corners; original price of 2.75 is present. A lovely edition, pairing Williams' poetic and symbolic play with book production by a fellow master of his medium, Alvin Lustig.

        Signed Yearbook

      - The Retrospect yearbook, dating from Armstrong's senior year at Blume High School in Wapakoneta, Ohio in 1947, hardcover, 8 x 11, 88 pages. Armstrong's senior portrait is at the top of page 12, and signed in ink under his activities, "Neil Armstrong." Among the activities he participated in during his three years at school are "Band (2,3,4) Vice-President 4," and "Student Council 3,4." Armstrong is pictured an addition six times in the yearbook, two in the band (one with the other officers), two for Student Council (one with the other officers), and two with the Senior Hi-Y, whose information reads, in part: "Clean Living-self-discipline in everyday life, Clean Speech-decency in conversation, Clean Scholarship-honesty in school, Clean Sportmanship-fairness in athletics." In fine condition, with inside pages detached from covers, loose front hinge, expected handling wear, and light wear and soiling to covers. Twenty-two years before his name would be etched into the history books, young Mr. Armstrong was associated with less-stellar--but no less noteworthy--pursuits such as band and student council. At age 16, he graduated 11th in his class of 78 students. His dedication to such creeds as those endorse by the Senior Hi-Y, including "clean living," "self-discipline," and "decency," would go on to serve him well in life--especially in the Apollo 11 moon landing and the demands of a post-NASA life as a living legend. Extremely uncommon in such early material!

(New York, February), (1947). (1947). - (New York, February), (1947). (1947). Fine. - sc - A powerful 14 inch high by 11 inch wide photograph by Emmerich Gara depicting the great Romanian composer and conductor from the chest up standing at the podium in three-quarter profile. Attired in a dark suit and tie over a striped shirt, the disheveled conductor looks up from a score into the dark distance. His furrowed brow belies the softer look of his features as he gently holds a baton between his two hands. Photographed by Cellist Emmerich Gara, with his name & address stamped on the verso of the photograph. Signed by Gara in pencil on the verso. Fine. The Romanian composer, violinist, and conductor and teacher George Enescu (1881-1955) was born in the village of Liveni. Known as Georges Enesco in France, Enescu was a child prodigy who created his first composition at the age of five. His works, influenced by Romanian folk music, include the two Romanian Rhapsodies, his opera "Oedipe", five symphonies, a symphonic poem "Vox Maris", and much more including chamber music. He made his American debut as a conductor at Carnegie Hall in 1923 and made several recordings as a violinist. He was considered as a possible successor to Toscanini. The town of Liveni, where he was born, was later renamed "George Enescu" in his honor.Emmerich Gara (b.1901, d.1963). Born in Vienna, Austria in 1901, Gara established lifelong careers as a portrait photographer and professional cellist. Before the outbreak of the Second World War he and his wife emigrated to the United States, where he was hired as cellist for the NBC Orchestra led by Arturo Toscanini. He performed with the orchestra (later called The Symphony of the Air) until his death. From his seat in the front row of the orchestra Gara was in the unique position to photograph all the great conductors and soloists who appeared with the orchestra during this extraordinary period of musical activity. His subjects were captured in performance, rehearsal, and in candid moments during recordings and while socializing.Gara's action portraits were used for record covers, for the Book of the Month Club and in articles in Time, Life and other major magazines around the world.         Scott-King's Modern Europe

First edition; 8vo; original cloth and John Piper designed dust jacket. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "from Evelyn Waugh March 1947." Bookplate of historian Hugh Trevor-Roper to the front pastedown. It is interesting that this copy belonged to Trevor-Roper as Waugh disliked him intensely, referring to him variously as "that blackguard" and "the demon don". In a letter of 1950 Waugh described his writing as 'vulgar'. Their most famous public spat was in the pages of the New Statesman in 1954 over relatively obscure points concerning the history of the Roman Catholic church in England. Waugh thought the appointment of Trevor- Roper as Regius Professor at Oxford as an insult to English Catholics. Waugh does not name the recipient of the inscription (he normally did), and it is interesting to speculate as to whether Waugh presented a copy of this work to a figure for whom he held a strong dislike. A fine copy in a near fine dust jacket with minor creasing to foot, lower panel and flaps a little spotted. A superb copy of this title with an interesting association.

VERY RARE! He became renowned as the quintessential 'Tel Aviv Photographer', and was famous for capturing the historic housing lottery in Ahuzat Bayit (the genesis of the city). His photographs accompany the construction and development of the first Hebrew city, and are a key source of information on Tel Aviv's first days, its streets, and its residents, as well as important events in its history. Photos courtesy of Eretz Israel Museum, Tel Aviv Avraham Soskin (1881-1963) was the quintessential "Tel Aviv photographer" in the first decades following the city's establishment. His photograph of the historic lottery of housing parcels that took place on April 11, 1909, on the Jaffa sand dunes is the most frequently reproduced and widely disseminated image of early Tel Aviv. Soon thereafter, the streets of the Ahuzat Bayit suburb were laid out and the first buildings erected. From 1914 to 1933 Soskin maintained his studio at 24 Herzl Street, down the block from the new town's principal landmark, the Herzliah Gymnasium. After he closed his studio he supported himself through a typesetting (zincography) business. The leaders of the Zionist movement, both in Palestine and abroad, were well aware of the power of photography as a medium for publicity and propaganda. Dozens of Soskin's photographs were reproduced on postcards during the early years, and in 1926 some achieved canonic status when they were published in a small album aptly entitled Tel Aviv. Soskin is the most prominent photographer represented in the Eliasaf Robinson Collection, which has rich holdings of historically significant postcards, commercial photographs, and snapshots produced by other photographers.

One of the most influential members of the cinematic avant garde, Richter In this film made the bold attempt to introduce this work to a wider audience Using the framing story of a man who discovers how to craft and sell dreams to a series of anxious clients, Richter allotted each dream (seven in all) to artists who included Max Ernst, Fernand Leger, Man Ray, Marcel Duchamp and Alexander Calder. Some chose to reprise their work in cinematic form - Ernst recreates a sequence from his collage novel La Semaine de Bonte - and Richter uses music by composers ranging from Darius Milhaud and John Cage to Duke Ellington

There is an added acknowledgment to H. G. Tapply, editor of Outdoors, whose interest in the Jeff Coongate stories, and in the wilderness country around "Mopang" and "Privilege," has been pleasingly predatory. EWS; and concludes his excellent Foreword, thus: [.] In conclusion, I find myself tempted to give my father a name commensurate with his own narrative ability. He ought to have been christened Tom Sawyer Finn, or Captain Galahad Flint, or Don Quixote Balzac, or James Fenimore Dostoevsky, Instead, I am for once compelled to stick to the truth in dedicating these wantonly fictitious stories, with immense and unending gratitude, to my father, whose name is George M. Smith--and who, when he reads this at age seventy-seven, will doubtless bend his searching eyes upon me, and remark:"Ed--I consider this foreword one of the most eloquent lies I have ever told you!"         Knizhka malyshke [A little book for a little kid]

Zlatoust (Russkoe Zarubezhnoe Izdatel'stvo), München-Schleissheim 1947 - Oblong octavo (20.5 × 14 cm). Original pictorial wrappers; 40 pp. Publisher's device to rear wrapper and numerous small black-and-white drawings throughout. About very good; some rust to staples and light wear to spine extremities. Rare anthology of Russian children's verse published by this publishing house of the Russian "displaced persons" (DP) camp Schleissheim, in the American occupied zone of Germany. Both the editor of the book, A. Kudriavtseva, and the illustrator, Robert Shlykevich, were likely displaced persons (nothing is known about them). The book consists of poems by a range of Russian authors, including Agniia Barto, who went on to win the Stalin Prize in 1949 for her work. Others represented in the book include: the nineteenth-century poet K. A. Peterson; Korney Chukovsky, a popular children's writer; and Sasha Chernyi, a Silver Age poet, children's author, and satirist, who emigrated after the Russian Revolution. Interestingly, in some instances the poems vary slightly from other versions of the well-known verse. For example, in Barto's "Snegir'" (1939) the first line is changed from "on the Arbat" (the famous boulevard in Moscow) to the more generic "on the prospect". The DP publisher Zlatoust was founded in 1946 and had anti-communist leanings; it published political works as well as children's literature, translations, high liter- ature and more popular books such as detective novels. Rare, with no copies in KVK, OCLC; not at the Russian State or National Library. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Typed Letter Signed while in exile in the United States

Kew Gardens, NY, 1947. unbound. 1 page, 11 x 8.5 inches, Kew Gardens, New York, February 18, 1947, providing a philanthropist with the name of a worthy German who is deserving of economic assistance during the post-war shortage crisis, in part: "...Emil Samorei has been a militant for the workers' cause since a very long time. Almost a youngster he stood in the 'Spartacus' front during World War I. Sent to the battle front he was crippled for the rest of his life. But his spirit was never broken. Soon, he became one of the courageous leaders of the Ruhr miners in their hard political and economic struggles. Under the Nazi terror he was caught by the Gestapo, terribly tortured and sentenced to hard labor. Only the fact that he was crippled in the war saved him from capital punishment. After ten years he left the prison almost paralyzed but with his old fighting spirit..." Usual folds with docketing notations presumably in Frolich's hand; very good(-) condition. German political activist and founding member of the Communist Party of Germany. Following the rise to power of Adolf Hitler in 1933, he was imprisoned in the Lichtenberg concentration camp, eventually fleeing to France and then the United States. He is best remembered as a pioneer biographer of the assassinated Communist Rosa Luxemburg.
