Street Corner Society

Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1947. Reprint. Cloth. Good +/good +. Stated fourth impression of this seminal volume on ethnic studies in an "Eastern City" (Boston). The books subtitle reads "Corner Gangs, Racket and Political Organizations - Their Leadership and Control in an Italian-American Slum". 284 pp. Author's first book. Reprinted many times, the book has become a standard college text, but when first published in 1943, it received little notice. Wikipedia has given over an entire page to this work. Prior owner bookplate afixed to the front free endpaper. Small stamp to same page. Prior owner name sticker afixed to the inside front pastedown and that same individual has printed his last name on the bottom of the page textblock. The remainder of the book is quite clean and presentable in decorated green cloth binding. The dustwrapper is clipped at front flap and has several chips and paper loss about the edges of the wrapper, especially at the top of the spine area. Despite these flaws, the book presents very well. Scarce early edition of a classic in the field of sociology.

        Eigenh. Brief m. Unterschrift.

New York, 26. VI. 1947. - An den steirischen Schriftsteller und Journalisten Rudolf List (1901-1979). - „[.] - Knickspuren. - Beiliegend eine kleine Broschüre (8 S. inkl.         Mohandas K. Gandhi Signed Photograph.

Photograph signed on the lower center, "Sincerely MKGandhi," It is a bust portrait showing him looking downward. The photograph measures 4.75 inches by 3.5 inches. Double matted and framed. The entire piece measures 12 inches by 13 inches. Photographs signed by Gandhi are rare. Mohandas K. Gandhi was the leader of the Indian independence movement against British rule. Employing nonviolent civil disobedience, Gandhi led India to independence and inspired movements for civil rights and freedom across the world. He is unofficially called the Father of the Nation. Gandhi's vision of an independent India based on religious pluralism, however, was challenged in the early 1940s by a new Muslim nationalism which was demanding a separate Muslim homeland carved out of India. Eventually, in August 1947, Britain granted independence, but the British Indian Empire was partitioned into two dominions, a Hindu-majority India and Muslim-majority Pakistan. As many displaced Hindus, Muslims, and Sikhs made their way to their new lands, religious violence broke out, especially in the Punjab and Bengal. Eschewing the official celebration of independence in Delhi, Gandhi visited the affected areas, attempting to provide solace. In the months following, he undertook several fasts unto death to stop religious violence. The last of these, undertaken on January 1948 when he was 78, also had the indirect goal of pressuring India to pay out some cash assets owed to Pakistan. Some Indians thought Gandhi was too accommodating. Among them was Nathuram Godse, a Hindu nationalist, who assassinated Gandhi on January 30, 1948. Gandhi's birthday, October 2, is commemorated in India as Gandhi Jayanti, a national holiday, and worldwide as the International Day of Nonviolence.

We climbed the impossible peak. [Extract from The Saturday Evening Post, June 28, 1947.]

      - First-hand account of the first ascent of Yosemite's Lost Arrow. This magazine article is cropped and laid into an hand-made octavo volume of 23 leaves, including 5 illustrations (1 folding), bound in blue cloth with neat, hand-lettered front cover and spine, the binding almost certainly done by Lawrence W. Swan (see below), with Swann's ownership signature on recto of the front free endpaper, Stanford University, August 1947, and on the verso the signatures of three of the four climbers: the author of the article, Fritz Lippmann, Jack Arnold, and Anton "Ax" Nelson. This is "the dramatic, breathtaking story of how Lost Arrow, the one long, thin shaft of rock rising like a giant needle in Yosemite Valley, finally was conquered by man." Lawrence Swan (1922-99), from whose library this hand-made book emanates, was a biologist, naturalist, professor, and a pioneering public television instructor. He was born in Darjeeling, in northern India. and was inspired by the region's stunning mountain terrain. He began a natural history career that was to bring him world-wide recognition as a leading authority on high-altitude ecology, particularly in the Himalayan mountain range" (from his obituary in the San Francisco Chronicle, May 15, 1999). He was a member of the first American Himalayan Expedition in 1954 on which he collected numerous specimens, and discovered two hitherto unknown species, a frog (Rana swani), and a glacier flea (Michilanus swani), both of which had adapted to surviving in one of the world's most inhospitable environments, and which were named in his honor. In 1960 he returned to the Himalayas with Sir Edmund Hillary's scientific expedition to the Mt. Everest area to conduct high altitude research. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Nations shown on this map are France, Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg, etc. The Western Front or Western Theater was the main theatre of war during World War I. Following the outbreak of war in August 1914, the German Army opened the Western Front by invading Luxembourg and Belgium, then gaining military control of important industrial regions in France. The tide of the advance was dramatically turned with the Battle of the Marne. Following the Race to the Sea, both sides dug in along a meandering line of fortified trenches, stretching from the North Sea to the Swiss frontier with France. This line remained essentially unchanged for most of the war. ERNEST HEMINGWAY WAR SUMMARY At the age of 18, Hemingway volunteered to serve as a Red Cross ambulance driver in World War I. He arrived in Paris in May, 1918 as the city was under bombardment from German artillery. By June, he was at the Italian front and stationed at Fossalta di Piave. On July 8, he was seriously wounded by mortar fire. Despite his wounds, Hemingway assisted Italian soldiers to safety, for which he received the Italian Silver Medal of Bravery. Hemingway said of the incident: "When you go to war as a boy you have a great illusion of immortality. Other people get killed; not you. Then when you are badly wounded the first time you lose that illusion and you know it can happen to you." He sustained severe shrapnel wounds to both legs, underwent an immediate operation, and spent five days at a field hospital before transferring for recuperation to the Red Cross hospital in Milan where he spent six months. These wounds affected him throughout his life. His novel, The Sun Also Rises, comprises themes resulting from these early experiences and many have speculated on their relatedness to his own war injuries. According to Hemingway: "World War I was the most colossal, murderous, mismanaged butchery that has ever taken place on earth. Any writer who said otherwise lied, so the writers either wrote propaganda, shut up, or fought." In 1941 Cuba before the declaration of war by the United States, Hemingway convinced the Cuban government to help him refit his sea vessel the Pilar, which he intended to use to surveil the waters near Cuba and ambush German submarines off the coast. Hemingway edited and wrote an introduction for a collection of war stories entitled Men At War first published in 1942. It contained the best war stories of all time including unabridged stories from Hemingway, William Faulkner, Rudyard Kipling, Winston Churchill, Marquis James, Victor Hugo, Nordoff and Hall, C. S. Forester, and many others. A classic compilation read by many G.I.'s when first published in 1942. In assembling this collection of the greatest war stories of all time, Ernest Hemingway presented a rare glimpse into history.         [Offprint of] "Recent and Prospective Developments in Large Digital Calculating Machines"

Overview Details & Condition Scarce early computing offprint describing ENIAC and the IBM/Harvard Mark I. Only the third of Hartree's computer publications, this offprint appeared shortly before the more well-known Cambridge University Press pamphlet Calculating Machines: Recent & Prospective Developments. The only two pieces published prior to this were an article in the journal Nature and a shorter article in the Journal of Scientific Instruments (published July 1947, the same month as the present). In addition to his contributions to ballistics and quantum theory, British mathematician Douglas Hartree (1897-1958) was also a leader in efforts to automate scientific calculations. He was "involved in the development of the digital electronic computer, which emerged from wartime attempts to automate calculation further... In 1946 Hartree's advice was sought in the application of the United States army's ENIAC (electronic numerical integrator and computer) to the production of ballistic tables" (ODNB). The present paper begins with a short history of mechanical and electrical calculating, describes the functioning of the Mark I and ENIAC, and notes some prospective developments, including the construction of the EDVAC and ACE computers and the principle of the acoustic line delay. The original owner of this offprint was the prominent Swedish chemist Gunnar Hägg. [London:] Royal Naval Scientific Service Journal, July 1947. 10-page stapled offprint. Ownership ink stamp of Gunnar Hägg and date ink stamp "Dec 1947" to first leaf. Upper staple lacking, a little minor creasing and toning. An excellent copy.
