Autograph Letter, signed ("John"), to Burgess Meredith and Paulette Goddard, regarding his hospitalization

[New York City], may 26, [1947]. 14 x 8-1/2 inches. 1-1/2pp. in ink on recto and verso of a single sheet of yellow ruled note paper. Slight waterstaining. Provenance: From the estate of Burgess Meredith . On the eve of his planned trip with Robert Capa to report on the state of postwar Europe, Steinbeck suffered a serious fall from his window. Writing to his friends Burgess Merdith and Paulette Goddard, he explains: "- I am in the Lenox Hill Hospital. Have been for two weeks and will be a minimum of one more and maybe two. I leaned out of our downstairs window and the iron guard gave way and I fell to the pavement. Broke my knee, tore ligaments in my back and had those things called internal injuries. I've been a sad sack but am getting better now. So I have to put off the trip I was going to make to let the knee get strong. Anyway here is what we plan to do. About the fifteenth of June Gwynn and I will go to Paris and stay there and thereabouts for about a month. Then she will go home and I will go on to Russia. Maybe we can spend some time together in France. Maybe Paulette could show Gwyn about in the lady dept. I'm supposed to have some francs - quite a lot. This is pretty wavery handwriting, but I have that fateful hospital weakness. By the way, Wallerstein has a play which the Schubert are opening here in the fall but it is opening in Glasgow soon. He is over there now. Maybe its something for you for in Dublin. Try to get in touch with him. It is a very funny and satiric comedy. It might be up your street. Very fine woman's part. Don't know about the man's. Might look into it. Tom [his baby son] has been exposed to mumps. I guess we'll have that next. This damnable sickness makes it hard to write for long -" [with:] MEREDITH, Burgess. Typed Letter (retained carbon copy), June 4, to Steinbeck in reply to the above, and one other, May 22, 1947, in which Meredith requests a copy of Pastures of Heaven. Meredith remarks humorously: "I don't know what philosophic remark to make about your guillotining yourself leaning out of your own downstairs window -" UNPUBLISHED

Fine Structure of the Hydrogen Atom by a Microwave Method

American Physical Society Lancaster and New York: American Physical Society. 1st Edition. Soft cover. Fine. FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPPERS of the discovery of the "Lamb shift" "Shortly after World War II, Lamb began his work to check the accuracy of the predictions of Paul Dirac as they related to the energy levels and spectral lines of hydrogen. Dirac's quantum mechanical theory predicted that the hydrogen atom had two possible energy states with equal energies. Lamb's accurate work using radiofrequency resonance techniques, reported in 1947, revealed that there was a minute difference in these energy levels. Small as it was, this Lamb shift necessitated a revision of the theory of the interaction of the electron with electromagnetic radiation. For this work Lamb was awarded the Nobel Prize for physics, which he shared with another leader of research at Columbia, Polykarp Kusch, with whom he had performed wartime research in developing microwave radar" (.Biographical Encyclopedia of Scientists).Particle Physics: One Hundred Years of Discoveries: "First measurements of the fine structure of the hydrogen atom, the Lamb shift. Nobel prize to W.E. Lamb awarded in 1955 'for his discoveries concerning the fine structure of the hydrogen spectrum.'"IN: The Physical Review, Vol 72, No 3, August 1, 1947, pp. 241-243. Lancaster, PA., and New York, NY: American Physical Society, 1947. Quarto, original wrappers. Tiny bump to outer edge, otherwise fine. Rare in wrappers.

De vises sten. Skådespel i fyra akter.

The Art of Walt Disney Inscribed and Signed By Walt Disney on the Title Page By Mickey Mouse

Collins 1947. The dust jacket has to be described as being in Poor condition since it is torn into two pieces and has minor losses. However, a conservationist/paper restorer may be able to re-attach the pieces improving the grading of this rare dust jacket. The tear is quite clean and the other losses are quite minor. Since we are not restorers ourselves we cannot make any claims of the restoration that is actually possible, and the Buyer/next owner of this beautiful book will need to seek professional advice. Measuring 21.00 x 29.00 cms (approx) the original creamy white boards have the lettering and decoration stamped into the front board, and lettering and the head of Mickey Mouse printed onto the spine. The boards are in Very Good condition with only the very lightest of discolouring and slight knocks to the top and bottom of the spine and to the corners. These are a very attractive set of boards. There are 290 numbered pages which are very clean and in overall Very Good condition with light spotting to the edges of the pages, predominantly noticeable when the book is closed (very minor and only mentioned for completeness). There is an attractive bookplate pasted to the front pastedown. Walt Disney's large and flourishing inscription and signature is located on the Title Page below the outline printed sketch of Mickey Mouse holding out his arms, and is executed in blue ink. This is one of the finest signed books by Walt Disney on the market today in complete and original condition

        River of Grass

2012. Soft Cover. Fine. Soft Cover. Number 22 of 36 copies. A stunning work by noted book artist, Doroth Simpson Krause. From the artist's statement: "This homage to Marjory Stoneman Douglas, (1947-1997), and her seminal book, "The Everglades: River of Grass" combines my images of the Everglades with historic photographs, documents and maps. Forty miles wide and over 100 miles long this slow moving river ranges from a few inches to a few feet in depth. Only half it's original size, the Everglades has been largely destroyed to meet the demands of urban and agricultural growth. The ongoing battle for restoration of the Everglades is a moral test which hopefully we will pass." The book's exquisite images evoke the beauty and mystery of the Everglades, which are "one of the unique regions of the earth, remote, never wholly known" (Marjory Douglas). Printed on Yu Kou paper heavy,on the Oki C9650 laser printer with letterpress overlay printed on the Vandercook 4 with metallic inks. Interleaved with Yu Kou light. Envelope enclosure of Lokta Oil Paper, saddle brown, referencing a packet of documents an early settler might have carried. Native mahogany tree seedpod closure with rawhide and thread tie. TYPED LETTER SIGNED (TLS). 1/2 page on a single sheet of letter-size paper, signed "Fritz" in green ink, dated 5 August 1945, to "Dear August" [Derleth]

Faint fold crease and some mild edge-rumpling, else near fine.. (#116646). A businesslike letter to Derleth, as editor of Arkham House, concerning the edition of Leiber's tales that he was preparing. NIGHT'S BLACK AGENTS appeared in 1947, Leiber's first book, and Arkham's 29th. (It was also the first of their titles which went subsequently into a paperback edition, brought out by Ballantine Books in 1961.) In this letter, responding apparently to Derleth's request for blurb material, Leiber refers to a letter he had received from H. P. Lovecraft late in 1936 after sending him the novella, "Adept's Gambit." He points out several sections of the letter, which he had enclosed, that might be suitable for quoting. "... I was delighted to receive a letter from Lovecraft containing not only some general comments, but an unexpected list of detailed criticisms and corrections, which I hastened to make use of in preparing a second writing of the story ... ." The front dust jacket flap did, in fact, wind up using some of this copy. "'Some day I hope the Fafhred Cycle will get into print,' wrote H. P. Lovecraft after reading the manuscript of the novel herewith, 'leading off with Adept's Gambit.'" Bleiler calls NIGHT'S BLACK AGENTS "one of the landmark volumes in modern fantastic fiction" (Bleiler, The Guide to Supernatural Fiction 1002) -- though he didn't care much for the Fafhred/Mouser story, which, in fact, was the only part of NIGHT'S BLACK AGENTS omitted in the Ballantine paperback. The letter links three of the most important figures in mid-twentieth-century American fantastic fiction.

A Collection of B. Traven Letters to Ruth Ford with Related Material Including Three Books

A magnificent archive consisting of 21 Typed Letters Initialed (as either "H." or "H.C.") from the elusive and fiercely private B. Traven, nearly all of the letters to the actress Ruth Ford, for whom he professes great love in many of the letters. Accompanied by three books, including a first American edition of The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, and assorted clippings. All of the letters Initialed by Traven as "H.C" or "H." as Hal Croves. Croves, one of several aliases used by Traven, was invented by the author in order to present himself as Traven's literary agent, and used mostly in his interaction with legendary film director John Huston throughout the development and filming of Traven's novel The Treasure of the Sierra Madre. The letters start in early 1947 and end in 1961, but the majority of them were written during 1947 and correspond with the production of the classic film. Many include references to day-to-day events of the film's production. These are dense letters, nearly all being single space typed. The letters average more than 500 words each, and one letter is over 2000 words. All of the letters have folds from mailing but are otherwise fine with about half of them accompanied by the original postmarked envelopes. Further details available upon request. .
