        Vanderbilt Clinic.

NY, Presbyterian Hospital, 1947 - NY, Presbyterian Hospital, 1947, first edition, wrappers. Softcover. A very scarce pamphlet written by Steinbeck about this New York hospital that apparently had served his family well, even the hospital itself doesn't own a copy, laid in loosely is a memorandum about this pamphlet signed by the hospital president, Charles P. Cooper, this is one of the more elusive of all Steinbeck "A" items, Goldstone & Payne A24a, Morrow 187, but neither record this memorandum, the whole is now housed in a custom clam-shell case. The memorandum is aged and quite brittle, but the book itself is fine. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

        Song of Robin Hood

Cambridge, MA: The Riverside Press, 1947. First edition. Quarto, original cloth. Inscribed by Virginia Lee Burton, "Greetings to the 'Caner' from Virginia Lee Burton." Near fine in the original dust jacket with some wear and tear.Anne Malcolmson, Grace Castagnetta, and Caldecott medalist Virginia Lee Burton joined forces in 1947 to produce the definitive edition of The Song of Robin Hood. Their triumphant achievement was one of the most distinctive presentations of the legend ever published, and it received a Caldecott Honor Medal in 1948. Through meticulous research and unfailing perseverance, Anne Malcolmson rediscovered fifteen of the original ballads of Robin Hood; Grace Castagnetta adapted them to modern musical notation. Virginia Lee Burton spent three years on drawings to accompany the songs, ultimately producing a work of art filled with exquisite detail and worthy of comparison to the greatest illuminated manuscripts of the medieval era.

Calculating Machines: Recent and Prospective Developments and Their Impact on Mathematical Physics.

Cambridge, Cambridge Unversity Press, 1947. 8vo. In the original printed wrappers. A 2 cm long tear to lower part of spine, otherwise a very fine and clean copy. 40 pp. + 2 photos.. First printing of Hartree's famous inauguration speech, which not only "marks the introduction of the knowledge about electronic digital computing into Britain [...]" (Erwin Tomash Library, H31) but also constitute "the first booklet on electronic computers separately published by a conventional publisher, and also one of the earliest discussions of how these machines could be used in scientific calculations" (Origins of Cyberspace 649).The present publication marks shift from computers being seen as a purely technical toy to an invention with a huge potential to the scientific community and society in general: "This can be seen as the start of Hartree's work on bringing computers and their potential to the attention of the scientific community." (DSB)."It reports on information he acquired while on a research trip to the United States earlier in the year. During his visit he was able to use the new ENIAC to solve a problem of integrating differential equations. He points out that the entire computation and punching of the result took less than four minutes, and it would have taken a human at least two days to simply write down the out produced during that time, let alone do any calculations. Such computing power must have seemed like a dream come true to his audience, but Hartree went on to describe the new machines under development that would be much easier to set up, more flexible to use and, more importantly, have more storage for data than the ENIAC." (Erwin Tomash Library, H31)."In 1945, Hartree paid an official visit to the United States on behalf of the British government, during which he visited the Harvard MARK I and ENIAC projects-both large-scale calculating machine projects. The ENIAC was built at the Moore School of Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania; it led directly to the development of the stored program computer concept, influencing computer design around the world. In 1946, Hartree again visited the ENIAC at the express invitation of the U.S. War Department in order to explore the ENIAC's application to scientific problems, with particular reference to the laminar boundary flow problem. Hartree was thus well placed to understand the advances being made in the United States and to promote computer development in the United Kingdom. It is unclear whether Hartree knew of the top secret Colossus machines built at Bletchley Park for code-breaking purposes, but he certainly moved in social and scientific circles with those who did. Hartree sat on advisory committees and executive groups and gave very positive support to the development of computers. In the late 1940s and early 1950s, electronic computers were developed in three main locations in the United Kingdom-at the University of Manchester, Cambridge University, and the National Physical Laboratory at Teddington. Hartree influenced all three projects, usually acting behind the scenes to promote, enable, or support the work." (DSB)Erwin Tomash Library H31Origins of Cyberspace 649

NY, Marguerite and Louis Henry Cohn, 1947 - NY, Marguerite and Louis Henry Cohn, 1947, first edition, wrappers. Softcover. First and only edition, this is supposed to be one of 60 numbered copies printed by Ward Ritchie, with the first 10 copies going to Steinbeck with the remainder going to the Cohns (House of Books) for Christmas gift presentation, however, this is numbered as copy No. 61 being Ward Ritchie's own personal copy, noted as being purchased from him by the legendary Serendipity Books in Berkeley, CA, a pencil note by Serendipity's Peter B. Howard indicates that he purchased the book from Ritchie June 16, 1986, this elusive "A" item is a letter from Steinbeck to Arnold Gingrich, editor of "Esquire," thanking him for sending a watch as a gift, the letter is full of Steinbeck's typical humor noting that he had expected a watch when he graduated from high school, but none was forthcoming, and since he didn't actually graduate from Stanford University he likewise hadn't received a watch as a gift, Goldstone & Payne A26a, Morrow 199 and 200, now housed in a custom clam-shell case.         Song of Robin Hood

Cambridge, MA: The Riverside Press, 1947. First edition. Quarto, original cloth. Inscribed by Virginia Lee Burton, "Greetings to the 'Caner' from Virginia Lee Burton." Near fine in the original dust jacket with some wear and tear. Anne Malcolmson, Grace Castagnetta, and Caldecott medalist Virginia Lee Burton joined forces in 1947 to produce the definitive edition of The Song of Robin Hood.

        LADY IN THE LAKE (1947)

MGM 1947 - Set of eight (8) vintage original 14 x 11" (35 x 28 cm.) lobby cards, USA. Robert Montgomery, Audrey Totter, Lloyd Nolan, Leon Ames, Jayne Meadows, dir: Robert Montgomery; MGM. Strong graphics and layout highlight the film noir feel of this rare set of cards. Raymond Chandler's character Phillp Marlowe is presented first person through the camera's view, allowing the audience to solve the mystery along with him. This film was close in spirit to the novel and is one of the finest adaptations of a Chandler book. This is an absolutely wonderful set showing key tense moments from this bizarre film. Of all the classic '40s Phillip Marlowe films, this is one of the toughest titles to find, and this is certainly a very difficult set to find complete. Minor creasing to top left of title card as well as a tiny border tear and rub at the mid-left margin, a repaired tear at the bottom middle edge of card no. 2, mended tear at bottom left side of card no. 7, otherwise all are very clean and without pinholes. NEAR FINE.

Omaha, NE: Union Pacific Railroad/Dining Car & Hotel Department, [no date, between 1947 and 1954] A cook book used by the Union Pacific railroad for its name passenger trains. This particular copy was identified by a previous owner with an attractive flowered cover of a menu from the Los Angeles Limited fixed to the inside of the front cover. Beginning in 1905 the Los Angeles Limited was the flagship train of the Union Pacific between Chicago and Los Angeles. Service finally ceased in 1954 as ridership declined. The binder begins with eight pages of service instructions, followed by sixteen sections of recipes. The sections are lettered A through P and are complete according to the list of contents. The lettering does not correspond to the type of recipe, i.e. beef is under the letter I, and desserts under the letter M, and so on. The previous owner fixed fine glossy photographs of the interior of the dining cars, the patrons and staff from the early 1900's through the 1950's, the exterior of the dining cars, the chefs in the kitchens preparing meals, the dining car being loaded with supplies from the commissary, and finally on the inside of the rear cover a photograph of a menu from 1946 used on this famous name train, seventeen original photographs in all. OCLC records only three copies and does not hazard a date other than that of 1954 when UP ceased the trains operation. Bound in original black vinyl three ring binder with lettering on the front cover in gold. The three ring binder allowed the book to be opened flat for easy reading of the recipes. A fine copy of this well cared for cook book.. Three ring binder.

[Evansville, IN: Printed by Herbert W. Simpson, Inc.], December 1947.. 12mo. Printed wrappers. Illustrations. A fine copy. First separate US edition of this essay, reprinted from its US publication in THE NEW REPUBLIC. From a total edition of 470 copies, this is one of fifty copies designated for distribution as a Christmas Greeting to friends of Paul A. Bennett. The text first appeared in HORIZON in April 1946, and soon became one of Orwell's most frequently anthologized and reprinted essays. One among several of his observations, at least when judging the utterances of the vocal extremes, remains particularly timely: "In our time, political speech and writing are largely the defense of the indefensible."         The Transistor, a Semiconductor Triode," and "Nature of Forward Current in Germanium Point Contacts," and "Modulation of Conductance of Thin Films of Semi-Conductors by Surface Changes" in The Physical Review Volume 74, I July-December 1948. pp. 230-231; pp. 231-232; pp. 232-233 [Full Volume]

FIRST EDITION of John Bardeen, Walter Brittain and William Shockley's development of the transistor, a discovery that in many ways invented the information age. "In 1947, John Bardeen and Walter Brattain, working at Bell Telephone Laboratories, were trying to understand the nature of the electrons at the interface between a metal and a semiconductor. They realized that by making two point contacts very close to one another, they could make a three terminal device - the first "point contact" transistor. They quickly made a few of these transistors and connected them with some other components to make an audio amplifier. This audio amplifier was shown to chief executives at Bell Telephone Company, who were very impressed that it didn't need time to "warm up" (like the heaters in vacuum tube circuits). They immediately realized the power of this new technology. This invention was the spark that ignited a huge research effort in solid state electronics. Bardeen and Brattain received the Nobel Prize in Physics, 1956, together with William Shockley, "for their researches on semiconductors and their discovery of the transistor effect" (Nobel Prize Committee). CONDITION & DETAILS: Lancaster: American Physical Society. 4to. (10.5 x 8 inches; 263 x 200mm). Ex-libris with minimal markings (just a library stamp on the title page. Illustration: In-text illustrations throughout. Binding: Bound in green cloth with gilt-lettered spines. Some rubbing and scuffing to the edge and spine tips. Solidly and very tightly bound. Interior: Occasional toning and spotting within; minor. Professionally rendered repair to the title page. Very good condition overall. Pictures available upon request.
