BORN TO KILL (1947)

RKO 1947 - Vintage original 22 x 28" (55 x 71 cm.) half sheet poster style B, USA. Lawrence Tierney, Claire Trevor, Walter Slezak, dir: Robert Wise, RKO. A calculating divorcà e (Trevor) risks her chances at wealth and security with a man she doesn't love by getting involved with the hotheaded murderer (Tierney) romancing her foster sister. "A grim and complicated melodrama…", the first of a number of noir films directed by Robert Wise, who had previously been associated with Orson Welles and then with the Val Lewton group at RKO. This leads to the interesting speculation that RKO developed the quintessential noir style of the 1940s due to a unique synthesizing of the expressionistic style of Welles and the moody, Gothic atmosphere of Lewton. BORN TO KILL is an excellent example of an RKO style, not only for its visuals but also for its offhanded depiction of perturbed sexuality and extreme brutality. RKO created a group of varied posters for this film. This genuinely rare B style half sheet, which we have never seen before, has unusually vivid colors and the extreme prominence on right hand side of artwork of psychopath Tierney. Also note that this poster is unfolded, which is also highly unusual. Unfolded, there is a small chip missing from blank middle right margin, there is a 2" (5 cm.) tear which extends from the top margin down to above the letter "A" of "BULLET-MAN", and some assorted minor smudges and creases, but this is overall a wonderful example of this rare piece, VERY GOOD+.

        The Tiger's Eye

1947 - New York: Tiger's Eye Publishing Company, 1947-1949. Nine volumes in illustrated wraps, comprising the entire run of this short lived but important and influential art and literary periodical curated by the husband and wife team of John and Ruth Stephans. The Tiger's Eye featured work by lesser known artist like Mark Tobey and Maud Morgan alongside work by more famous artists like Giacometti and Picasso. Ruth Stephan herself was a poet and heiress to the Walgreen fortune; the first four issues feature artwork by her husband. Spines of several volumes heavily creased, with some heavier creasing to front and rear panels; the glue originally used to hand mount the plates was very dry and several plates have been re-tipped in but a nice fairly clean set overall. Very frequently found pamphlet bound and/or in poor condition due to the cheapness and fragility of the bindings. The set was reissued in 1967 but these are the original issues. Included here is the book by Pamela Frank 'The Tiger's Eye-The Art of a Magazine' issued to coincide with the Tiger's Eye exhibit held at Yale in 2002 documenting the magazine's history. A rare survival of the original run. [Attributes: First Edition]

Merle Armitage: Dance Memoranda (Second Edition, inscribed to composer Arthur Berger)

Duell 1947 Sloan & Pearce, New York - Second Edition. INSCRIBED by the author on the front endpaper in 1949 to composer Arthur Berger: "For Arthur Berger / with the gratitude of / Merle Armitage / 1949." Berger and Armitage were not only contemporaries in the New York arts scene of the 1940s, they had a strong connection in a composer that had just preceded them, Igor Stravinsky. The work of both men--Armitage's work as an impresario and Berger's compositions--strongly reflected his influence, and both wrote essays on him, captured in the noted collection of essays on Stravinsky edited by Edwin Corle and published in 1949, the same year the book offered here was inscribed. Jacket is moderately faded at the spine panel and folds, but has no chips or tears. A survey of dance profusely illustrated with photographs and works of art from diverse cultures and periods throughout. Yellow pictorial endpapers by Picasso. A tremendous association.Near Fine in a Very Good plus dust jacket. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
