Photography from the V-2 rocket at altitudes ranging up to 160 kilometers

Washington DC: Naval Research Laboratory, 1947.
The First Published Photographs of the Earth Taken from Space

Bergstralh, T. A. Photography from the V-2 rocket at altitudes ranging up to 160 kilometers. N. R. L. report no. R-3083. [ii]-vi, 25pp., 12 original photographic prints included in pagination. 1 sheet of printed Library of Congress catalogue cards laid in. Washington, DC: Naval Research Laboratory, April 1947. 265 x 204 mm. Original printed wrappers, cloth backstrip, small marginal tear in front cover; boxed. Fine copy, one of only 47 produced.

First Edition of the first published photographs of the Earth from space—the first photographs to show the earth’s curvature Extremely rare—the distribution list on p. iii of Bergstralh’s report indicates that only 47 copies were prepared for various military, academic and private research institutions.

The photographs, which show a large portion of the American southwest, were taken from cameras mounted on a V-2 rocket launched from the proving ground at White Sands, New Mexico. The rocket, which bore the number 21 but was the 20th V-2 launched at White Sands after number 1 misfired, was one of over 60 V-2 rockets captured from the Germans at the end of World War II in 1945. At that time the German rocketry program was at least 20 years ahead of any other such program in the developed world. As part of Project Paperclip, the United States government brought both the captured V-2s and over 100 German rocketry experts (headed by Wernher von Braun) to America, where they began what is now the U. S. space program. In 1946 the Upper Atmosphere Research Panel (also known as the V-2 panel) was formed to oversee a program of high-altitude experiments conducted using the V-2 rockets. On October 24, 1946 the research team was able to obtain photographs of the Earth taken from 65 miles above the surface; however, these photographs were not published until 1950 (see Newell, High Altitude Rocket Research p. 288).

The present report announces that photographs were taken from more than 100 miles above the earth. “On 7 March 1947 the twentieth V-2 to be launched in America took to the air from the Army Ordnance Proving Ground at White Sands, New Mexico. As on several of the previous flights, an attempt was made to obtain photographs of the features of interest on the rocket and, of course, of the earth. In this attempt the effort met with considerable success. Included among the group of pictures obtained are the first ever to be taken from altitudes greater than 160 kilometers (100 miles). The quality of the photographs is fairly good. For the first time, in pictures taken at such high altitudes, it is possible to recognize clearly many geographical features. In addition a large number and variety of cloud formations were recorded by the cameras and other information of meteorological value” (p. 1).

Photographs 11 and 12 are especially notable. Number 11 includes an overlay showing landmarks in New Mexico, Arizona and the Gulf of California. The caption to number 12 states that “this picture covers approximately 500,000 square miles of southwestern United States and northern Mexico. The photographs [making up the composite] do not match exactly due to the varying camera angles.” Newell, High Altitude Rocket Research (1953), pp. 284-288. Krause, “High altitude research with V-2 rockets,” Proceedings of the American Philosophical Society 91 (1947): 430-446. Sobranie sochinenii v chetyrekh tomakh [Collected works in four volumes]. Edited and with a preface by Viacheslav Zavalishin. A complete set of the edition prepared by Russian Displaced Persons in post-war Germany

Regensburg, 1947-48. Regensburg, 1947-48. 12mos (ca. 14.5 x 10 cm). Original side-stitched pictorial and printed wrappers; 159, [1]; 138, [1]; 108; and 88 pp. Wrappers lightly worn and creased; text evenly toned due to paper stock and with occasional nicks to margins; vol. 4 lacking original wrappers. Famous edition of collected verse by Acmeist poet Nikolai Gumilev (1886-1921), the first edition of his collected poems to appear anywhere after the poet?s death (two or three individual collections of Gumilev?s poetry, such as "Chuzhoe nebo," were published by the Shanghai-based publisher Drakon in 1940-41). Remarkably, this four-volume edition was published by Russian Displaced Persons (DP) in post-war Germany, despite extreme hardships, a lack of material resources, and military censorship rules. Such books, featuring original works, political manifestos, and reprints of Russian classics, were printed in very small print runs and on highly brittle paper. Furthermore, original Russian editions of Gumilev?s works were difficult to locate in post-war Germany, complicating the publishing endeavor from a textological point of view. An undertaking as difficult as this testifies to the tenacity of the Russian DPs, their immense love for their native culture, and unabated interest in Gumilev himself, who was executed by the Bolsheviks in 1921 and later became a figurehead of the many thousands of exiled Russians. A key figure of Russian Silver Age culture, Gumilev traveled widely and was fascinated with Africa and Asia. His name became synonymous with travel, foreign adventure, and a heroic, defiant stance endearing him to the Russian emigre readership. As the editor, Viacheslav Zavalishin, writes in the preface: "Nikolai Gumilev entered the history of Russian literature as the standard-bearer of heroic poetry. [...] Gumilev is a romantic, but his romanticism is of a special kind that contains all the passion of the world, which reveals itself in heroic feats and spells of intense rage..." Zavalishin, an editor and publisher throughout the DP period (1945-51) had escaped from German capture, was arrested by the Gestapo and survived imprisonment in a German concentration camp to become an important publisher and literary critic who later settled in the United States. Contents: Volume one ? "Zhemchuga" ("Pearls") and "Shater" ("The tent"); volume two ? "Chuzhoe nebo" ("Foreign sky") and "Kolchan" ("The Quiver"); volume three ? "Koster" ("Bonfire") and the play "Gondla"; volume four ? "K sinei zvezde" ("To the Blue Star") and "Ognennyi stolp" ("Pillar of Fire"). The wrappers of volumes one and two are illustrated with a portrait of Gumilev by DP artists Simechkevius and Drazhevskoi. Volume two features a printed censorship mark: "Permitted by HQ EUCOM, Civil Affairs Division, APO 757." Overall, this remains one of the most remarkable publications within the unique phenomenon of Russian Displaced Persons? printers and publishers. Complete sets are scarce (the third volume, here in particularly good condition, is the rarest of the four). Bazanov 134-137.

So i think so i paint: ideologies of an Italian self-made painter.

TEMI, Trento. 1947 - Traduzione di Raffaella Lotteri. Presente il foglietto di p. 9 in cui Depero ironizza su alcuni errori di stampa: "If in Alaska or in Turkestan a book were printed in Italian, the eventual ortographical mistakes and misprints would be, no doubt, excused. So I apologize for the inevitable mistakes contained in this book printed in Trentino and within a very limited space. I was told that the words Heaven, Hell, Purgatory are not to be written with capital letters; I reserve to myself to correct as soon as I am back from one of these misteroius and so much spoken of places; only then (sic) I will be able to give my opinion on the question. Finally I authorize the reader to displace surplus capital letters and to put them were I out of my typographical taste have omitted them". In fine elenco delle edizioni di Depero. Le tavole, con riproduzioni di opere del pittore, sono stampate su carta patinata. Assolutamente non comune. Esemplare con autentica di Rosetta Depero. Formato: 174 p., [32] c. di tav. 28 cm, bross. Buono.
