I, the Jury (Signed Bookplate Laid in)

Dutton, New York 1947 - A very good minus copy bound in black paper-covered boards stamped brightly in red. With bumping to all corners. Very clean and tight throughout with the exception of several gray smudges in the margins of page 69. Scattered foxing to the top edges and light foxing to the rear paste-down. In a good dustjacket which is worn, lightly edge-rubbed and has small pieces missing at all the corners and at the top and bottom of the spine. There is a small pinky fingernail-sized piece missing at the top left corner of the spine where it meets the rear panel. Small triangular piece missing in the middle of the rear panel as well. With the original price of $2.50 at the bottom of the inside front flap. Laid in is a bookplate signed "Mickey Spillane". An attractive and striking first edition in dustjacket of Spillane's first book and the First Mike Hammer mystery.         I, the Jury

New York: Dutton. 1947. First. First edition. A short tear at the crown, some modest bumps, and a little fading to the spine lettering, very good lacking the dustwrapper. Spillane's first book, the first Mike Hammer mystery, and the progenitor to a whole generation of books featuring ultra-violent detective heroes. Harry Essex wrote and directed the largely forgotten 1953 film version, the first of several films based on Spillane's works. .

        The Harder They Fall

Random House, New York 1947 - First edition. A small, faint stain on the top edge, still fine in a very near fine dustwrapper with a bit of rubbing and a couple of small and unnecessary internal repairs. Signed by the author. A scathing indictment of the manipulation of professional boxers, no less relevant today than it was fifty years ago. Basis for the powerful Mark Robson film in which Humphrey Bogart, in his final role, plays a cynical press agent who comes to realize the extent to which prizefighters are pawns of their managers and racketeers.         Jeunesse noire [Black Boy]

Paris: Gallimard. (1947). First. First French edition. Translated by Marcel Duhamel in collaboration with Andre R. Picard. Wrappers in tissue dustwrapper. Pages browned, a small chip on the last leaf affecting no text, else near fine. A novel which became the bestselling book by an African-American up until that time. This copy Inscribed by Richard Wright to French Nobel Prize-winning author Jean-Paul Sartre: "For Jean-Paul With all my best, As ever, Dick." Additionally signed by the translator Marcel Duhamel. Wright was keenly interested in Existentialist writing and it had a great influence on his own work. His association with Sartre, in particular, was a more intimate one -- the two authors became close friends and Wright's journals speak often of his high personal regard for the French author. Similarly, Sartre spoke of Wright as one of the greatest living American writers, without regard for race, and on several occasions enlisted Wright's aid in political causes. A magnificent association. .

Hodder & Stoughton, London 1947 - With Full Page Family Inscription - Hand-Written By Cousin Of Lord Horatio Nelson: Begins: I am fifth cousin to Lord Nelson. The Rev'd Edmund Nelson, Rector of Burnham, Thorpe, Norfolk, married Miss. Catherine Suckling, whose sister married a Mr Barker. Their daughter, Miss Barker, married Mr Smith and she 'worked the apron, now in my possession "pro tem". She was my Great, Great Grandmother. - It explains the ancestry of Lord Horatio Nelson further on in the paragraph and interestingly it says: Nelson's Mother died when he was 9 years old, at the age of 42, after having 11 children in 17 years. Captain Maurice Suckling, his Mother's Uncle, gave Nelson his first chance to go to sea on his ship [the Raisonnable] when he was 12 years and 3 months old. [1771]. - The apron is to be handed down in our family as an heirloom and I trust Charles Anthony Patrick, my Dear Nephew to do so. Hand-Signed:- Dorothy Patrick. 1 :3 : 71. - End of handwritten piece. My Notes: I have researched 'working the apron' but I can't seem to find any sort of reference to this phrase. If anyone knows what it means I will put the information in this description. - I have researched the ship referred to in the piece of writing: Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia states: THE RAISONNABLE: was a 64-gun ship of the line of the Royal Navy, named after the ship of the same name captured from the French in 1758. She was built at Chatham Dockyard, launched on 10th December 1768, and commissioned on 17th November 1770 under the command of Captain Maurice Suckling, Horatio Nelson's uncle. Raisonnable was built to the same lines as HMS Ardent, and was one of the seven ships forming the Ardent-Class of 1761. Raisonnable was the first ship in which Nelson served. CONDITION & DESCRIPTION: The original dustjacket houses this book. Retains price of 42/- net to the inner front prelim. Foxing in general to the lighter coloured parts of the dustjacket. Small closed edge tears and creasing. Few small chips: mainly corner edges and some nibbling to the top and bottom of the spine. There is a fold that runs down the spine. I have now housed the dustjacket in a removable protective archival sleeve. Navy blue cloth boards with gold gilt lettering to the spine, the gilt is very slightly faded. Corners are very lightly and minimally bumped. Still firmly bound to the inner page block. Inside the book: Front blank endpage is removed so you open at the half-title page and find the large family hand-written page by Dorothy Patrick. There are 13 full page illustrations with a description of each one on the reverse. Several were reproduced from original oil paintings at The National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, by kind permission of the trustees. There is a facsimile of a letter written by Lord Nelson to Admiral Sir John Jervis K.B. August 16th, 1797. There are also several black and white drawings of maps and battles fought by Nelson throughout his naval career. Apart from foxing to the first and last few pages, the other 734 pages are in a very nice clean condition. There is a large fold out family tree for THE NELSON FAMILY, at the very end of the book. [almost 27 inches long in its' entirety]. Book is large and heavy measuring approx 10 inches x 7 inches and weighing 1.4kg [1400g]. - There were 3 small newspaper clippings that came with this book and I will add them as a small bonus item. - This Is A Mighty Rare Book Especially With The Family Inscription & The Historical Information Provided In The Inscription. - [example: Is It A Well Documented Fact That Nelson Had His First Trip With His Uncle When He Was 12 Years Old?] [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Age wear with minor staining and scuffing to binding. Five-inch split along bottom edge of front cover. Expertly reinforced with gray binders tape along gutter at front- and rear endpaper. Photos show children at play, nurses with newborns, mothers with their kids at home, etc. Usual age toning to card stock. Text in Russian. Binding in good-, interior in overall very good condition. Rare. Originally created in 1941 as an antifascist committee, at the time of this publication it simply became a women's organization. Its main purpose was to convince foreign women's delegations of the high economic and political status of women in Russia. Representatives stressed the fact that the vast majority of lawyers, doctors and teachers were women, but failed to point out the miserly salaries and low prestige of those professions within the economic hierarchy in the Soviet Union. This hypocrisy turned many women against the organization. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Theatre Complet

Gide, Andre. Theatre Complet. Neuchatel: Ides et Calendes, 1947. First edition of his collected plays. Eight volumes, (9" x 6.5") 4to. Original wrappers. Fine copies. Illustrated with original lithographs in colors by Maurice Brianchon. Plays printed include: Saul, Philoctete, Le Process, Robert ou l'interet General, Hamlet, plus twelve others. Maurice Brianchon, French, (1899 - 1979) proved to be a fine choice for the illustrations of Gide's plays because he was a stage designer for the Paris Opera as well as being a recognized artist. As a man of the theatre, Brianchon could understand two of the key elements of the play, movement and the climax of the dramatic scene. His lithographs are shaded and colored in a way that lets one shape blend into another suggesting stage movement. Also, his formal composition captures the essential action of a scene.

Boston: Little, Brown and Company, [post- 1947]. - Pictorial cloth. Spine slightly cocked, cloth a bit faded. Internally clean. About very good in imperfect dust jacket (large portion of spine panel lacking). An exceptional association copy of this 5th printing of the Little, Brown edition, with a full-page presentation inscription from Dobie to man of letters and social activist John Howard Griffin: ".Legions of devils & quite a few angels - most of them unaware - have prevented my getting this off to you sooner. Now I send it with affectionate good wishes while I look forward to what the Mexican earth says to you, or, rather tells you something to say . A fine letter on Censorship you wrote." The inscription is dated in Austin, 25 February 1962, in the year following the appearance in book form of Griffin's most widely known work, BLACK LIKE ME, an account of his six-weeks of travel in 1959 in the South after having his skin chemically darkened. In the wake of the publication of the periodical and book forms of his narrative, Griffin came under considerable attack, both in Texas and elsewhere, for his exposure of deeply ingrained racial inequities, his life was threatened, and he was hanged in effigy in his Texas hometown. As a consequence, for a period he moved, with his wife and four children, to Mexico for safety. As two of the most prominent Progressives in Texas, Dobie and Griffin were, for the many years of their friendship, allied in the waging of a number of significant battles for social justice and intellectual integrity, including almost legendary battles against censorship in Texas. This book, which many consider Dobie's best, is an account of the northern regions of Mexico, much of it based on his own experiences, and his gift of it to Griffin, then in refuge there, renders it a particularly evocative association copy.
