c1947 PHOTOGRAPHIC AND TYPESCRIPT JOURNAL OF A MARINE FROM TENNESSEE - SUPER RELIC OF WWII BY A CHARMING NEAR POETIC SURVIVOR OF GUADALCANAL

TENNESSEE NEW CALEDONIA GUADALCANAL SOUTH PACIFIC 1947 - On offer is a sensational relic of World War II being a photographic diary with accompanying typescript journal commentary by an unidentified soldier from Tennessee. The Marine did a brilliant job putting together a handmade diary illustrated with two groups of photographs [the kind you might have gotten in the PX during the War]. Our sense is that the author has either returned to the area or hasn't yet left the arena of the War but soon after the War our author begins this charming retelling of experiences both good and terrible in the South Pacific. He uses twenty-five photographs and then details and stories relating to the people he was with or the scenes depicted in the photos. It is heartbreaking and heartwarming all at the same time. The soldier does not tell us his name but he makes references to being from Tennessee. He writes of taking a ship to New Caledonia and of people he worked with and situations he encountered. A great deal of his time was spent in Guadalcanal. In one moving passage he tells the story of his friend and mentor Howard H. [Gabby] Gould III; a soldier during World War I who reenlisted after Pearl Harbor. He became a drill sergeant and then made his way to New Caledonia. There he learned that he was considered unfit for overseas duty. Heartbreakingly Gabby dies of a broken heart 2 weeks after being shipped stateside. This is one of the most unique WWII relics we have come across. VG+. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall

A Map of Verona. SIGNED PRESENTATION COPY TO DAVID LOW, CREATOR OF 'COLONEL BLIMP'

Reynal & Hitchcock New York 1947 - 8vo., First US Edition; cloth, covers very slightly faded else a very good, bright, clean copy in unclipped dustwrapper, the whole housed in a calf solander case with gilt back and marbled edges. A SIGNED PRESENTATION COPY TO DAVID LOW, WITH THE AUTHOR'S HOLOGRAPH INSCRIPTION DATED 1947 ON FRONT FREE ENDPAPER. This scarce collection (the author's first book and sole collection of verse) contains the structured poem 'Lessons of War', Part I of which, 'Naming of Parts', is arguably the most famous poem to emerge from WWII. It also contains the famous T S Eliot parody 'Chard Whitlow'. PRESENTATION COPIES ARE EXCEEDINGLY SCARCE. THIS ONE IS TO DAVID LOW, LEADING BRITISH POLITICAL CARTOONIST AND CREATOR OF 'COLONEL BLIMP'. A New Zealander by birth, Sir David Low (1919-1963) arrived in Britain in 1919 to progress his fledgling career as a political illustrator. In his early years in Britain he worked with a variety of publications including the 'Star', 'New Statesmen', 'Punch' and 'The Graphic'. In 1927 he was invited by Lord Beaverbrook to join London's 'Evening Standard' and the rest is history. A staunch anti-fascist, Low used the scaithing and incisive poweer of his cartoons to attack the complacency of the British establishment in the 30s; in 1934 he created in Colonel Blimp' one of the most famous figures in newspaper cartoon history. His work was swiftly banned in both Germany and Italy and after the outbreak of war several of his cartoons were used to inspire the British people during the darker days at the beginning of the conlfict. Low was appointed an official War Artist and as such attended the Nuremberg War Trials. He was knighted in 1962. Many of Low's cartoons were published in book form, the most famous collections being 'Low's Political Parade with Colonel Blimp (1936) and 'Europe at War' (1941). His most famous character was the basis of 'The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp' (Powell & Pressburger, 1936), one of the most important feature films in the history of British cinema. A UNIQUE AND PARTICULARLY APPROPRIATE ASSOCIATION COPY IN THE CONTEXT OF WWII. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

THE MOMENT AND OTHER ESSAYS. PROOFS

The Hogarth Press, London 1947 - Woolf, Virginia: THE MOMENT AND OTHER ESSAYS. London: The Hogarth Press, [1947]. Gathered, trimmed loose signatures. Faintest tanning of the cheap proofing paper, otherwise about fine. Half morocco folding clamshell case. Original letterpress page proofs for the first edition, denoted as "First Proof" by the typesetter's stamp; each signature bears the printer's dated stamp, "R. & R. Clark, Ltd. 6 Sep. 1947 [-23 Sep. 1947]" marking the date of proofing of that form. A comparison with the published book shows several alterations were made to the prelims before the first printing was made; we have not compared the text, other than its makeup and pagination, and would presume any differences would be a consequence of typographical corrections. The finished book appeared on 5 December. Kirkpatrick and Clarke A29a. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

At that time the Allies had no idea of how far Germany had progressed in the quest to build a nuclear reactor, but given Germany’s leading role in the advancement of nuclear physics they had every reason to believe that the Nazis were ahead of the game—in fact, the fear of a German “atom bomb” was one of the main reasons behind the establishment of the Manhattan Project. This fear turned out to be groundless: Due to a combination of factors, including Hitler’s dislike of “Jewish science” and the “White Jew” Heisenberg, Germany had fallen far behind the United States in the development of nuclear energy. fter the bombing of Hiroshima Heisenberg became one of the primary crafters of Germany’s official account of its wartime nuclear energy program. In December 1946 he published his first postwar summary of the program in the journal Naturwissenschaften; the present English translation, slightly abridged from the German, appeared in Nature the following August. In the summary Heisenberg argued that Germany’s failure to advance its nuclear program was due both to enormous technical difficulties and to the lack of political and financial support; he also played up his own role in slowing down the project by quashing Nazi officials’ hopes for the imminent development of atomic weapons. “Heisenberg’s self-serving account parallels but overinterprets actual events. He especially did try to maintain scientific control over the [nuclear energy] project. He was also aware of the theoretical possibility of a nuclear explosive by late 1941, he did not demand a crash research and development to build one, and he did seem content to work for the rest of the war on the more modest program of building a reactor. It is difficult to assess his intentions and motives beyond that. But from what we know of his activities and research, there is nothing to support the notion that Heisenberg actually hindered the project in any way to keep an explosive out of Hitler’s hands or even that he himself had that much control of the situation” (Cassidy, Uncertainty: The Life and Science of Werner Heisenberg, p. 510).

        Jeunesse noire [Black Boy]

Paris: Gallimard. (1947). First. First French edition. Translated by Marcel Duhamel in collaboration with Andre R. Picard. Wrappers in tissue dustwrapper. Pages browned, a small chip on the last leaf affecting no text, else near fine. A novel which became the bestselling book by an African-American up until that time. This copy Inscribed by Richard Wright to French Nobel Prize-winning author Jean-Paul Sartre: "For Jean-Paul With all my best, As ever, Dick." Additionally signed by the translator Marcel Duhamel. Wright was keenly interested in Existentialist writing and it had a great influence on his own work. His association with Sartre, in particular, was a more intimate one -- the two authors became close friends and Wright's journals speak often of his high personal regard for the French author. Similarly, Sartre spoke of Wright as one of the greatest living American writers, without regard for race, and on several occasions enlisted Wright's aid in political causes. A magnificent association. .

The Einstein presentation Signed Letter is neatly tipped to the second half-title page; 1 page [mimeographed] on the letterhead of the Emergency Committee of Atomic Scientists, dated April 29, 1947. The letterhead lists Albert Einstein as Chairman & Selig Hecht as Hon. Vice-Chairman of the Committee along with Linus Pauling, Philip Morse & other scientists as officials*. The letter reads: "Dear Mr. Upjohn, / I am glad to have the opportunity to send you the enclosed book, Explaining the Atom, by Selig Hecht, honorary vice-chairman of the Emergency Committee of Atomic Scientists. Dr. Hecht has succeeded in giving, clearly and simply, and authoritative account of the scientific steps, both theoretical and experimental, that have led to our present knowledge of nuclear fission. I believe also that from this book the discerning reader can gain the information necessary to form an independent opinion of the practical problems of atomic energy confronting the world today. Remembering your concern for these problems, and your interest in the work of our committee, I hope that you may also share my admiration and respect for this distinguished book. / With kind regards, Faithfully yours, A. Urey, & V.F. Weisskopf joined together to form the Emergency Committee of Atomic Scientists. These scientists in turn were later joined by Selig Hecht, Harrison Brown, and H.J. Mueller. The object of the Committee as stated in their by-laws was to encourage and further the peaceful uses of atomic energy. To attain this objective the "Committee was to solicit private contributions in support of the work of the National Committee for Atomic Information." On August 6, 1946 the Emergency Committee of Atomic Scientist s was incorporated in Princeton, New Jersey in order "that the contributions it received might be devoted to other groups interested in the field of atomic information & education as well as the NCAI." Included among these groups were the Association of Scientists for Atomic Education, the Federation of American Scientists, & the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists. The ECOAS while supporting these various groups of scientists' organization whose ends were the education of the public & the United States' government in the potential uses & misuses of atomic energy, also carried on extensive educational programs.
