MacKenzie was still Prime Minister of Canada in his third and final term from October 23, 1935 to November 15, 1948.INSCRIPTION and SIGNATURE on back...(Dec. 17, 1947 Christmas Eve 1947My dear Mary,Your beautiful card of Christmas and birthday greetings brought me no end of pleasure at this Christmastide. It was dear of you to send us this good words and good wishes it conveyed from you. I feel with the passing of the years a stronger attachment than ever to old friends, especially those who have shared family attachments as well. So to you, if you will permit me to do so, I send very affectionate remembrances, and of good wishes for 1948.Billy.Printed card with inscription and signature had been torn and tears repaired using Japanese mulberry and silk fibre paper. In very good condition otherwise. A scarce to rare personal signed and inscribed document to Canada's longest serving Prime Minister. The Mary WLMK is referring to in this note is most likely Mrs. Mary Scott, 82 South Drive, Toronto, Ont. A friend of his parents and whom he had previous personal correspondence with before and after this. WLKM had very few friends and family and rarely showed his private side in public which makes these type of personal communications insightful and rare. Highly collectable. WLMK, a man of many faces and names - Willie, Rex, Mackenzie, Billy- His mother referred to him as "Billy". Called "Billy" by his classmates - a member of the class of '95 at University of Toronto. "He may want to be a politician one day," his friend Oscar Rumpal contributed, "but if you meet Billy in a fist fight you''ll know why we call The Rebel" quoted from William Lyon Mackenzie King: p.14, Dreams and Shadows By Lian Goodall.A survey in 1997 by Maclean's magazine ranked King first among all Canada's prime ministers, ahead of Sir John A. Macdonald and Sir Wilfrid Laurier and maintained a very respectable third in the 2011 survey.

BEHOLD THIS WOMAN - PRESENTATION COPY

      D. Appleton-Century Company, Inc., New York 1947 - First Printing. Octavo; light gray cloth, with titled and blocked in black on spine and front panel; dustjacket; 281pp. Presentation Copy, inscribed by Goodis to a fellow employee at Warner Brother's: "February 9, 1948. To - Helen Fahringer - who is one of the most pleasant personalities in the Writers' Building at Warners. With my fond wishes - David Goodis." Faint offset to pastedowns, else a tight, Fine copy. Dustjacket is unclipped (priced $2.75), lightly spine-sunned, with some light edgewear, 2 short tears to rear panel, with a small scrape at upper corner of front joint; 2" of unnecessary brown paper reinforcement along edges on verso; Very Good+. Behold This Woman is Goodis' most autobiographical novel, a bizarre paean and cathartic payback to his estranged wife, Elaine Astor. The book was commercially successful, but more importantly, Goodis used the novel to lay the foundation for the type of woman his male protagonists would become entangled with; think Mommy Dearest meets The Black Widow. The novel tells the story of Clara Ervin, a manipulative, calculating, and cold-blooded woman who systematically emasculates and ruins her husband, as well as several other men, before meeting a violent death. To some degree, she embodies many characteristics of Goodis' wife Elaine, a central character in his life and the person who, ultimately, dealt him a piercing blow from which he did not recover for the remainder of his days. Books inscribed by Goodis are extremely rare; we know of but a handful of examples which have come to the market, nearly all of which were inscribed to people Goodis worked with at Warner Brothers, during some of the happier times in his life. The recipient was a much-loved secretary at Warner Brothers, working there well into her 70's. An attractive copy of the author's fourth hardcover book, and the only inscribed copy of this title we have seen or handled. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

First book of O'Hara's published by Random House, who remained his publisher until his death. " 'Hellbox' is a collection of 26 short stories. John O'Hara defined the twentieth century short story. This is one of his best collections consisting of stories for the most part published in The New Yorker from 1945 to 1947. He gives a glimpse and a memory into middle class white life, the things people thought about, the things they fretted and aimed for. It's the small detail at times that frames the atmosphere of the story. On the flyleaf, there's a explanation that Hellbox is a printer's receptacle for broken type." - OHara fan.. Signed by Author. Since its publication, the evolution of this domain has been enormous." (Bultheel & Cools: The Birth of Numerical Analysis).

"Just when modern computers were being invented (those digital, electronic, and programmable), John von Neumann and Herman Goldstine wrote a paper to illustrate the mathematical analyses that they believed would be needed to use the new machines effectively and to guide the development of still faster computers. Their foresight and the congruence of historical events made their work the first modern paper in numerical analysis. Von Neumann once remarked that to found a mathematical theory one had to prove the first theorem, which he and Goldstine did concerning the accuracy of mechanized Gaussian elimination - but their paper was about more than that. Von Neumann and Goldstine described what they surmised would be the significant questions once computers became available for computational science, and they suggested enduring ways to answer them." (John von Neumann's Analysis of Gaussian Elimination: the Founding of Modern Numerical Analysis, Lecture at ICME, Stanford, January 2007).

"The concluding Chapter 7 interprets the rounding error analysis. Von Neumann asked his readers to continue from his residual bound 'several different ways'. He guided his readers by explaining the appropriate conclusion shows the computed result is exact for some perturbation of the initial data. This is the 'backward' interpretation which many people think von Neumann did not understand. The paper closes by evaluating the residual bound for 'random' matrices, and by counting arithmetic operations.
In sum, von Neumann's paper contains much that is unappreciated or at least unattributed to him. The contents are so familiar, it is easy to forget von Neumann is not repeating what everyone knows. He anticipated many of the developments in the field he originated, and his theorems on the accuracy of Gaussian elimination have not been encompassed in half a century. The paper is among von Neumann's many firsts in computer science. It is the first paper in modern numerical analysis, and the most recent by a person of von Neumann's genius." (Kees Vuik, Birthday of Modern Numerical Analysis).

Hook & Norman, Origins of Cyberspace, no. 957; Goldstine, The Computer from Pascal to von Neumann, pp.290-91; Nash, A History of Scientific Computing, p.23; DSB, XIV, p.92.. 1947 - Illustrations de Jacques Simon. Abbott and Costello, despite their growing estrangement, promote the opening of a youth center. A rare dual-signed document

"Typed Letter Signed, ""Bud Abbott"" and ""Lou Costello,"" 1 page, 8.5"" x 11"" on ""Lou Costello Jr. Youth Foundation"" letterhead, Los Angeles, April 21, 1947 to Jimmy Starr of the Herald Express inviting him to the opening of the ""Lou Costello Jr. Youth Foundation play center and medical clinic ..."" Expected mailing folds, mounting remnants on verso, else fine condition. The letter reads in full: ""You are cordially invited to attend a press preview of our greatest show. The many kindnesses of the press have made this show possible, so this invitation is especially fitting. We are speaking of the Lou Costello Jr. Youth Foundation play center and medical clinic at 3121 East Olympic Boulevard. At 8:00 p.m. on the evening of Friday, May 2 the curtain goes up on the main performers of this show--- the recreational and medical facilities that we are offering to the boys and girls of Los Angeles. Less than twenty-four hours later---10:00 am. On Saturday, May 3 to be exact---we will turn the keys of the place over to a boy and girl. From that moment the Lou Costello Jr. Youth Foundation will belong to the kids. We are not promising you laughs on the evening of May 2. Because, as you know, the ever rising tide of juvenile delinquency is no joking matter. But, from what we hear of the food and refreshments, the smiles department will be well taken care of that evening. Our greatest pleasure will be the opportunity of greeting you and the Mrs."" Lou Costello decided to establish the recreation center in 1944 in honor of his son, Lou ""Butch"" Costello Jr., who tragically drowned in the family swimming pool soon before his first birthday in 1943. At the time Costello began his effort, his relationship with Bud Abbott had sunk to a such a low that the pair barely spoke off set. Despite these differences, Abbott supported the foundation and acted as Secretary-Treasurer. The center held a special place in Costello's heart, not only because it reminded him of his lost son Butch, but because he had a sincere desire to help the disadvantaged children of the city. His daughter Christine later recalled, ""Dad didn't just open the foundation; he became an active part of it... He went there as often as he could, to make sure things were okay, to visit and joke with the kids. Sometimes he even got out on the baseball diamond and batted balls around with the youngsters. If he went overboard on the project, it was because he wanted 'his' kids to have the best recreation facility in the world?"and it was."" (Christine Costello, Raymond Strait, Lou's on First: The Tragic Life of Hollywood's Greatest Clown Warmly Recounted by His Youngest Child,1982, p. 145) Supporting the center became a burden for Costello, and in 1950 the City of Los Angeles purchased the center, which continues to operate in East Los Angeles as The Lou Costello Jr. Recreation Center."

        The Moment and Other Essays

London: The Hogarth Press, 1947 First edition, first printing. One of 10,000 copies. Personal copy of author's niece, Angelica Garnett, presented and inscribed by the author's sister Vanessa Bell: "Angelica / from VB" in blue ink to the front free endpaper. Publisher's pale ruby red cloth boards, lettered in gilt; pink dust jacket with vase of flowers illustration printed in black. About good (this copy appears to have taken a bath, dust jacket and all): bright cloth and gilt, tidemarks and paper residue to boards, pink bleeding from the dust jacket to the first and last few pages of text and the page edges, hint of spotting to the top edge, light rippling to the otherwise clean pages; unclipped dust jacket, faded and rippled from dampstaining, with loss to the spine ends, toning to the spine, wear and chipping to the extremities, panel text and illustrations unfaded. Housed in a custom quarter-leather clamshell box. Kirkpatrick A29a. The Moment and Other Essays is a collection of twenty-nine of Virginia Woolf's essays, selected and published posthumously by her husband Leonard Woolf. Her second posthumously published set of essays, following The Death of the Moth in 1942, The Moment contains a mix of previously published and unpublished essays, including: "On Being Ill," "The Artist and Politics," "The Leaning Tower," "On Re-reading Novels," and "Sterne's Ghost," among others. Many of the essays contain Woolf's trademark literary commentary in which she commemorates rather than analyzes literary figures and their works. Vanessa shared a very close relationship with her daughter Angelica Vanessa Garnett (née Bell, 1918-2012), the youngest of her three children. Writing to her son Julian in May 1936, Vanessa describes her affection for Angelica: "…having a daughter … has been in a way the most terrific experience of my life - that's to say the most penetrating, intimate, I don't know how to put it, experience.". Illus. by Bell, Vanessa. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Good.

"The Da Costa appeared unannounced in certain bookshops in St-Germain-des-Pres in the autumn of 1947. Anonymous and deliberately designed so that it appeared to be one fascicle, and not the first, of an encyclopaedia being published periodically, it began not only in mid-sentence, but mid-word and bore the heading Fascicle VII, volume II ... It was of insolence and immoderate use of sarcasm ... The Da Costas, by remaining anonymous, and enthusiastically stirring so much invective into the ideological pot, were obviously not aiming for reconciliation, and if some of the attacks today are obscure ... those on the institutions of state, church, learning etc. are still fresh and steaming ..." Brotchie, 1995 edition of Le Da Costa ...)Articles in the Da Costa are by Georges Ambrosino, Georges Bataille, Francis Bouvet, Andre Breton, Jacques Brunius, Jacques Chavy, Rene Chenon, Charles Duits, Marcel Duchamp, Jean Ferry, Sandor Garay, Jindrich Heisler, Marcel Jean, Robert Lebel, Patrick Waldberg and a few more. .

        The Amboy Dukes

Garden City: Doubleday. 1947. First. First edition. Fine in a just about fine, price-clipped dustwrapper with some very slight rubbing. The author's influential first book, a cheaply manufactured novel about youth, sex, and crime in Brooklyn. Basis for the film City Across the River, which, though it toned-down "the good parts," nevertheless was the movie for teenagers to see in 1949 and paved the way for subsequent pictures such as The Blackboard Jungle and Rebel Without a Cause. It also featured Tony Curtis in his second film appearance and first significant role, as Mitch, the gangleader. A superb copy, and seldom found thus. .
