High-Speed Computing Devices

New York: McGraw-Hill. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Very Good. FIRST EDITION IN THE EXTREMELY RARE ORIGINAL DUST JACKET of the first textbook on digital computers. Popular and influential, it served as the first "how-to" guide for building an electronic digital computer. "High-Speed Computing Devices was written to satisfy a perceived need, following the end of World War II, for a compendium of technologies applicable to the emerging field of the electronic digital computer. Because published technical information was scarce in the US, there can be little question that the book was an important contribution to the computer literature of the 1950s. For today's student of computer history, whether a professional historian or a history buff, the book, with its state-of-the-art picture of the period 1947 through 1949, establishes a well-documented baseline for tracking and evaluating subsequent technological progress" (A.A. Cohen, "Introduction", Charles Babbage Institute Reprint Series Edition of the ERA Report, 1983). Supervised by C.B. Tompkins and J.H. Wakelin; edited by W.W. Stifler, Jr. New York: McGraw-Hill, 1950. Octavo, original cloth, original dust jacket. With neat ownership stamp and address on front free endpaper. Book fine with spine gilt remarkably bright. Dust jacket with fading to spine and very light edgewear and a few tiny spots of rubbing. SCARCE in the original dust jacket.

The first theoretical study of rocketry published in the United States after World War II, written by three members of Cal Tech's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The three-part paper, published two years after the end of the war, reflects the advances in rocket science made available to the United States after the collapse of Nazi Germany, which during the war had developed the first long-range guided rockets (the V-1 and V-2) and used them as weapons in the last months of the conflict. The paper also discusses the work on liquid- and solid-propellant rocket systems done at Cal Tech's Jet Propulsion Laboratory under the guidance of the lab's director, Theodore von Karman. Topics covered here include the dynamics of rocket jets, the theory of solid-propellant operation, fundamental of liquid-propellant rocket motors, sounding rockets and escape from the earth, and rockets utilizing nuclear energy.

This set of offprints is from the library of Theodore von Karman, who in addition to directing the JPL at Cal Tech was also the founder of the Aerojet Engineering Corporation, one of the industrial giants of the jet age. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

        [Typescript]: Summer and Smoke

January 1947. Carbon typescript. Quarto. (4), 147, (1)pp. Sheets bradbound in the blue "Liebling-Wood" folder of Williams's agent, Audrey Wood. The light blue wrappers are moderately worn with wear to the extremities with tears and chips, the page ends are also worn, and the brads have pulled through the front wrap and part of the first page, about very good. The typescript for Williams's 1948 play about a refined minister's daughter from Glorious Hill, Mississippi, who falls for the unsophisticated young doctor who lives next door. This early version of the play, labeled "January 1947," is the one used during its first production in Dallas, Texas, in July 1947 by Margo Jones, before its New York debut in October of the following year. Though it ran for 102 weeks it was considered something of a disappointment as a follow-up to Williams's incredibly successful A Streetcar Named Desire" which immediately preceded it. The play was revived in 1952 off Broadway with a now legendary performance by Geraldine Page as Alva, and was later made into a 1962 film directed by Peter Glenville with Laurence Harvey, Rita Moreno, and Page, who received an Oscar nomination for best actress. .

[Mexico: n.p.] 1947-1981 - Collection of 60 Mexican bullfighting posters / broadsides, mostly dating from the 1960s and 1970s, ranging in size from 15 1/2 x 7 3/4 inches to 25 x 18 inches. An excellent study in late 20th century art and advertising, the images combine the traditional bullfighting imagery of Spain with the vibrant commercial graphics of 1970s Mexico. Illustrations by artists John Fulton, Reynaldo Torres, R. Basso, and D. Cardenas, among others. Includes advertisements for fights at the Plaza Monumental, El Toreo de Tijuana, and La Plaza de los Toros, and announcements for performances by El Cordobes, Alfredo Leal, and Mario Mareno Cantinflas. Uniformly near fine condition overall; some individual pieces may have slight edgewear; an exceedingly bright and compelling collection.

        The Wayward Pressman

Garden City, NY: Doubleday and Company, 1947 First edition. Inscribed by Liebling on the front free endpaper: "For Alfred Byers / A. J. Liebling". Publisher's gray cloth, lettered in dark green; in the original pictorial dust jacket, with a red, dark green and white title label over a newspaper background in gray and black, lettered in white and dark green. Very good, with some wear and rubbing to the extremities, light rubbing to the boards, bright and clean interior; price-clipped dust jacket, with some wear and nicks to the extremities, jacket splitting at the flaps but still intact, light toning to the spine, minor soiling to the rear panel. Overall, a bright and presentable copy. Inscriptions by Liebling are extremely rare. The Wayward Pressman is a collection of A. J. Libeling's newspaper articles in which he reflects on his "life with newspapers," which "began long before [he] first worked on one, in 1925." This collection takes its title from The New Yorker's "The Wayward Press," a column analyzing American journalism, originally written by humorist Robert Benchley. Liebling took over the column in 1945, and, although he wrote hundreds of articles for The New Yorker, it is the 82 pieces he wrote for this column that Liebling is best remembered. In The Wayward Press, Liebling addresses his own affinity for newspapers, the differences between newspapers and other printed texts, and the role of the journalist in society, in addition to his evaluations of the priorities and performances of various American newspapers. Himself an avid newspaper reader, Liebling infuses his Wayward Press pieces with his own passion and "affectionate needling," making the column well-written, insightful, and extremely entertaining.. Signed by Author. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Dust Jacket Included.
