      Imprimerie National, Paris 1947 - First edition. Octavo, 2 volumes, original wrappers as issued. Inscribed by Maurice Allais on the title page of volume one. From the library of fellow Nobel Prize-winning economist Kenneth Arrow, with his name in each volume. In near fine condition with light shelfwear, minor mending to the first few pages of volume one. A nice association linking these two Nobel Prize winning-economists and giants of twentieth century economics. In ?conomie & Int?r?t, Maurice Allais introduced the first overlapping generations model (later popularized by Paul Samuelson in 1958), introduced the golden rule of optimal growth (later popularized by Edmund Phelps) or described the transaction demand for money rule (later found in William Baumol's work). In 1988 Maurice Allais became the first French citizen to receive the Nobel Prize in economics. He won it for his contribution to the understanding of market behavior and the efficient use of resources. Allais also showed that his insights could be applied to help set efficient prices for state-owned monopolies, of which France had many. Allais's work paralleled, and sometimes preceded, similar work done by English-speaking economists Sir John Hicks and Paul Samuelson. He also proved a result in growth theory in 1947 that had been credited to Edmund Phelps. Allais did not get credit as early as his English counterparts because his work was in French. Agent's ink-stamp to front free endpaper. Sunned along extremities, tips very lightly bumped, a few pale markings to boards, free endpapers tanned. A very good copy in the slightly rubbed and nicked dust jacket. First edition, first printing. Roger Senhouse's copy, sent to him by literary agents Pearn, Pollinger & Higham for the preparation of the first UK edition, published by Secker and Warburg the following year, here containing an illuminating collection of ephemera and correspondence exchanged between Senhouse, Frederic Warburg, Trilling, and critic Cyril Connolly over a period of two years, tracing the novel's UK publication from Senhouse's lukewarm assessment of Trilling's capabilities to its eventual success. The Middle of the Journey, a roman-à-clef of the McCarthyist era in American politics, was Trilling's first and only novel. As professor of English at Columbia University, New York, he had already published two books of criticism, on Matthew Arnold and E. M. Forster, and a number of short stories. Roger Senhouse and Fredric Warburg established Secker and Warburg when they assumed control of failing Secker in 1935. They soon became known as "the Trotskyist publishers" owing to their willingness to publish anti-Communist works by left-wing authors. As a young man Senhouse had notably been the last lover of Lytton Strachey: the sadomasochistic nature of their relationship was revealed with the publication of their letters in 2005. Cyril Connolly was close friends with Senhouse and responsible for arguably his greatest success as a publisher, suggesting to George Orwell that he try Secker and Warburg after the author had parted company with Communist-sympathiser Victor Gollancz following the publication of The Road to Wigan Pier (1937). The laid-in material includes two typed letters each from each of Trilling (both signed) and Connolly (one signed), various documents annotated extensively by Senhouse, as well as two further letters from him to Trilling (both signed). Those involved in the novel's publication consistently express concerns over Trilling's style and characterisation, though appear to have been divided over the appeal of its political message; Connolly and an unnamed reviewer both identify the influence of E. M. Forster. Senhouse's own letters refer to his continuing friendship with Lytton Strachey's sister Dorothy Bussy, and also to the postwar recession in British publishing that would lead to the absorption of Secker and Warburg into Heinemann in 1951.         The Big Sky

      NY: Sloane. (1947). The first in his series of historical novels about the settling of the American west in the 19th century. The second book in the series, The Way West, won the 1950 Pulitzer Prize for fiction. This book was a Pulitzer Prize nominee in 1948, is one of Jeff Dykes's "Western High Spots," and was the basis for the 1952 Howard Hawks movie starring Kirk Douglas that was nominated for two Academy Awards. Inscribed in Lexington, Kentucky in the year of publication to fellow Lexington residents: "For Elizabeth and Virgil [Steed], with the best of wishes," and signed "Bud Guthrie." Guthrie spent 22 years as a reporter and editor for the Lexington Leader, before moving back to Montana shortly after The Way West was published. Moderate dampstaining to cloth, with loss to the spine lettering; very good in a very good, spine-sunned dust jacket with small, internally tape-reinforced edge chips. First Edition. Hardcover.

Illustrated with six original full page engravings. Fine in slightly worn and mottled slipcase and chemise. First edition of one of Genet's least common works, a long poem in homage to a fellow prisoner. At least one of the extant manuscripts of the poem dates from 1944. From a total edition of 88 copies (including eight for presentation), this is copy 49 of 71 press-numbered copies on Arches. Although they are not mentioned in the colophon, this edition is illustrated with six original engravings of chiefly homoerotic subjects by Genet's friend, Leonor Fini. Each of the engravings is numbered in pencil and signed in the plate by Fini. Additionally, the first engraving bears her signed ink inscription: "Pour Roland Fernandez Leonor Fini."

        The New Economics: Keynes’ Influence on Theory and Public Policy.

      New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1947. First edition. Octavo, original blue cloth. Fine in a very good dust jacket with some rubbing to the extremities. Signed by economists Paul Samuelson and James Tobin, who contributed essays to this volume. Other contributors include John Maynard Keynes, Wassily Leontief, Lloyd Metzler, Gottfried Haberler, Wassily Leontief, Abba Lerner, Joan Robinson, Joseph A. Schumpeter and Jan Tinbergen among others. A very nice volume dedicated to the work and influence of Lord Keynes. Paul Samuelson is one of the developers of both neo-Keynesian and neoclassical economics, the latter of which still dominates mainstream economics. He was awarded the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences in 1970. One of Samuelson's many novel contributions was that he generalized and applied mathematical methods developed for the study of thermodynamics to the field of economics. His inspiration for doing so came, in part, from his mentor, polymath Edwin Bisdwell Wilson who was a former Yale student of the founder of chemical thermodynamics, Willard Gibbs. Samuelson, therefore, is a successful example of interdisciplinarity, and he combined these ideas in his magnum opus Foundations of Economic Analysis.

Includes a black and white portrait of George Orwell. In the introduction for this edition, Orwell explains his experiences during the Spanish Civil war and his connection to what he describes as “the negative impact of Soviet myth in Western socialist movement. € Shevchenko first read the book in English while living in a displaced persons camp. He chose to publish it under the title “Kolghosp Tvaryn” which directly referenced collectivized farms instead of choosing the more direct translation of “Ferma Tvaryn. € “Shevchenko wrote to Orwell in London, and, working with him by letter, published Animal Farm in Ukrainian. In March 1947, Shevchenko printed around 5, 000 copies to distribute among the Ukrainian refugees in the displaced persons camps of postwar Germany and Austria. But only 2, 000 books were given out; U. S. Soldiers, suspecting the books of being anti-Stalin propaganda, confiscated the rest and handed them over to Soviet authorities to be destroyed. € (Chalupa, “Orwell and the Refugees. €) Subjects: English fiction -- 20th century -- Translations into Ukrainian. This series of images was commissioned in 1945 by Canadian philatelist and entrepreneur Kasimir Bileski and was originally referred to as The United Nations Series. Each print was created as an exquisite frontispiece and title page for a unique international stamp album. All images reflect the artistic genius of the 20th century's greatest miniaturist illuminator and painter.Of the approximately 60 colorful and highly detailed images commissioned by Bileski, only nine countries were completed (plus the History of Flight) and printed prior to Szyk's sudden death in 1951.At the top, presiding over the illumination, is the American Bald Eagle, the most immediately recognizable symbol of freedom, democracy, and power of the United States. Szyk positions two portraits on either side of the eagle: an African American man, apparently a farmer; and a Native American, wearing a feathered headband typical of the Abenaki Indian tribe of the Northeast. Cet ouvrage n?a jamais été publié malgré son immense intérêt historique et son prix littéraire. Edmond JONGLEUX est né en 1869. Il entre à la Mairie de Bourges en 1896 et en devient le Secrétaire Général. Il est admis à la Société des GENS DE LETTRE, présenté par Paul Féval fils et Charles Le Goffic Académicien, en juin 1922. Il développera une activité Historique et littéraire locale abondante. Son ouvrage « Bourges sous la Botte Allemande ou 50 mois d?esclavage » lui vaudra le Prix Littéraire du Syndicat d?Initiative pour les deux années 1947 et 48. Sa position Secrétaire Général de la Mairie de Bourges pendant les années d?Occupation lui permettront d?être un observateur majeur de la vie quotidienne des berruyers en période d?occupation.       - A magnificent archive consisting of 21 Typed Letters Initialed (as either "H." or "H.C.") from the elusive and fiercely private B. Traven, nearly all of the letters to the actress Ruth Ford, for whom he professes great love in many of the letters. Accompanied by three books, including a first American edition of *The Treasure of the Sierra Madre*, and assorted clippings. All of the letters Initialed by Traven as "H.C" or "H." as Hal Croves. Croves, one of several aliases used by Traven, was invented by the author in order to present himself as Traven's literary agent, and used mostly in his interaction with legendary film director John Huston throughout the development and filming of Traven's novel *The Treasure of the Sierra Madre*. The letters start in early 1947 and end in 1961, but the majority of them were written during 1947 and correspond with the production of the classic film. Many include references to day-to-day events of the film's production. These are dense letters, nearly all being single space typed. The letters average more than 500 words each, and one letter is over 2000 words. All of the letters have folds from mailing but are otherwise fine with about half of them accompanied by the original postmarked envelopes. Further details available upon request. In the introduction for this edition, Orwell explains his experiences during the Spanish Civil war and his connection to what he describes as “the negative impact of Soviet myth in Western socialist movement. € Shevchenko first read the book in English while living in a displaced persons camp. He chose to publish it under the title “Kolghosp Tvaryn” which directly referenced collectivized farms instead of choosing the more direct translation of “Ferma Tvaryn. € “Shevchenko wrote to Orwell in London, and, working with him by letter, published Animal Farm in Ukrainian. In March 1947, Shevchenko printed around 5, 000 copies to distribute among the Ukrainian refugees in the displaced persons camps of postwar Germany and Austria. But only 2, 000 books were given out; U. S. Auf dem Vorsatzblatt findet sich ein fast wortgleicher Eintrag einer zweiten (wohl späteren) Hand: 'Monuments de Rome-Tivoli 50 Dessins d'après Nature, et Sepia Rome 1834'. Album mit 53 Original-Handzeichnungen des Malers und Stechers C. Wise (5 Sepien und 48 Bleistiftzeichnungen), zwei datiert 1831 bzw.1834, montiert auf 47 Blatt starkem, graublauem Papier. Bildgrößen zwischen 32 x 25 cm und 15 x 20 cm.

      - Halbleder-Band der Zeit mit marmorierten Deckenbezügen und handschriftlichem Etikett (rechte obere Ecke des Einbandes beschädigt, Kanten berieben), 28,3 x 42 cm. Über den Künstler C. Wise ist trotz seiner späteren Karriere in den USA, die sich durch verschiedene druckgraphische Arbeiten nachweisen lässt, bislang erstaunlich wenig bekannt. Noch nicht einmal der Vorname ließ sich bislang entschlüsseln. Im Thieme/Becker (Bd. 36, 1947) wird er als englisch-amerikanischer Bildnisstecher bezeichnet. Man nimmt an, dass er Europa gegen 1850 verließ und fortan bis zu seinem Tode gegen 1889 als Stecher, Radierer, Lithograph und eventuell sogar als Verleger in den USA wirkte. Über seine englische Herkunft weiß man gar nichts, vielmehr muss er, wie Trockenstempel auf verschiedenen früheren Arbeiten, aber auch auf zwei Blättern im vorliegenden Album, hindeuten, eine beträchtliche Zeitlang im französischen St. Omer gelebt haben. Das vorliegende Album fügt der Biographie Wises wichtige Bausteine hinzu, da wir nun wissen, dass er sich 1834 als junger Mann und angehender Künstler in Rom aufhielt und dass er zudem ein überaus begabter Zeichner war, der diese Profession offensichtlich später zunehmend zugunsten einer Tätigkeit als Stecher und Lithograph aufgab. Sollte er seinem künstlerischen Talent misstraut und stattdessen auf die Druckgraphik, gerade im Sinne eines gesicherten Broterwerbs, gesetzt haben? Das Etikett auf der Vorderseite des Albums lässt keinen Zweifel daran, dass die in diesem Band vereinten Zeichnungen allesamt von seiner Hand stammen ("par C. Wise") und vor Ort, in direkter Anschauung, entstanden waren ("d'après Nature"). Ein kleines Etikett auf dem vorderen Innendeckel ('50 Desins & Sepias f 30') mit womöglich einer Preisangabe ("f 30") könnte darauf hindeuten, dass Wise die Zeichnungen in der Absicht angefertigt hatte, damit als junger Künstler in Rom einen Teil seines Lebensunterhalts zu finanzieren. Drei Blätter (Bl. 29r-31r) entstanden am Standort der Académie de France in Rom, also dem römischen Außenposten der in Paris ansässigen Académie des Beaux-Arts. Ob er dieser damals auch institutionell verbunden war, müsste man nachprüfen. Immerhin zeigt auch dieses Album den besagten Trockenstempel: 'C. Wise à St. Omer'. Dieser Trockenstempel findet sich ferner auf einigen im Kunsthandel nachweisbaren Blättern, wohl aus dem Nachlass von Wise, auf die er die kleinformatigen Radierungen des niederländischen Malers Adriaen van Ostade (1610-1685) aufgeklebt hatte, die sich wohl in seiner Sammlung befanden. Zudem sind jüngst von seiner Hand drei aquarellierte Tuschfederzeichnungen mit Kostüm- bzw. Trachtenstudien bekannt geworden. Eine davon weist den gleichen Trockenstempel auf, die beiden übrigen Blätter den etwas abweichenden Prägestempel "C. Wise Doulens 1. CH". Bei den Studien handelt es sich offensichtlich um eine Folge von Kostümentwürfen für eine Theateraufführung, denn sie sind sie mit "La Guerre des Servantes" bzw. "Bohemniens" bezeichnet. Das Stück "La Guerre des Servantes" stammte von Emmanuel Théaulon (1787-1841) wurde 1837 uraufgeführt. Über das Schaffen und Wirken von Wise in den USA weiß man wenig. Immerhin lassen sich vereinzelte Werke ermitteln, die C. Wise als den Stecher ausweisen. Eine "Allegorie der Künste und Wissenschaften" von 1856, ediert in New York bei J.H. Colton & Company, zeigt vier Musen, die sich um einen Globus herum versammeln. Signiert ist das Blatt, das als Frontispiz zu Coltons zweibändigem Weltatlas dient, mit "F.a. Chapman Del." und "C. Wise Sc.". Ob eine Lithographie von 1883, die sich einem Ereignis aus der jüngeren amerikanischen Geschichte widmet ("Execution of Thrity-eight Sioux Indians at Mankato, Minnesota December 26, 1862") mit unserem C. Wise zusammenhängt, bliebe zu klären. Jedenfalls wird als Verleger ein John C. Wise angegeben. With title and chapter headings printed in red and black, 15 photogravure plates of illustrations of papermaking, 1 botanical plate and 2 mounted paper samples. 4to, in the original decorated paper-covered boards backed in red morocco by Peter Franck of Sherman, CT. The binding is paper was handmade by Hunter and is printed with gold Buddhas highlighted in red and green from a 17th century woodcut and is coated with India ink. The spine is lettered in gilt. 102 pp, inclusive of plates, samples and colophon. A very fine copy of this scarce and impressive book, beautifully preserved. FIRST EDITION, LIMITED TO ONLY 182 COPIES HAND-PRINTED BY HUNTER ON HIS OWN PAPER FROM HIS MILL AT LIME ROCK. The book is a result of firsthand studies of papermaking in the papermaking villages Yen-Thai and Lang-Buoi in Tonkin, Indo-China prior to the Japanese invasion and outbreak of the Second World War. Hunter traveled with a photographer from Hanoi whose work is reproduced to illustrate the book. The tipped in paper specimens are from pieces brought back by Hunter, the first being the best Tonkin handmade paper and the other being a specimen of pure Daphne paper. This is an important record of a gone-by art form, but is also full of interesting observations of the local people and the political situation of the time. The woodcut used on the paper boards was procured by Hunter while in China, the one used for the title-page device is from Tonkin. The typographical ornaments used as chapter headings and borders were cut and cast by Dard Hunter, Junior. The paper used was made by Hunter in 1932 in Lime Rock, CT. The limitation on the printing of this title was dictated by both the size of the paper samples brought back from Tonkin and the availability of his own Lime Rock paper.
