        Bartender's Guide.

New York: Doubleday & Company,, 1947. With drawings by Ray Sullivan. Octavo. Original yellow cloth, titles to spine and decoration to front board in black. With the pictorial dust jacket. Illustrations in the text by Ray Sullivan An excellent copy in a chipped and rubbed jacket with faint dampstaining to spine panel. First edition, first printing. Inscribed and signed by Trader Vic in his characteristically extravagant (and mostly indecipherable) scrawl on the front free endpaper, "To my Maeleen [?] aloha... Trader Vic". His inscription is followed by one in a different hand, "To a nice lady I've known a long time. Audrey Mae Chesney, from Trader's Store". Trader Vic's manual contains over 1,500 cocktail recipes for the home and the professional bartender and "also includes several chapters of advice for bartenders, covering both the joys and the perils of bartending, how to be a good host, and how to handle guests who can't handle your drinks" (jacket blurb). Vic "The Trader" Bergeron opened his first bar in Oakland in 1934, which grew into the worldwide franchise of Polynesian-themed restaurants and bars, Trader Vic's. The master mixer travelled extensively to research rum and cocktail mixology and in 1944 invented the Mai Tai (although his friend and rival Don the Beachcomber claimed to be the real inventor).

6 highly-finished pencil drawings in the guest-book for Werzer's Gasthof "zum Weißes Rössl

Pörtschach am Wörthersee: , 1947. Octavo. Original red three-quarter cloth, floral boards. 6 pencil drawings by Pock. A little rubbed, else very good. The guest-book for Werzer's famous Gasthof "zum Weißes Rössl" at Pörtschach am Wörthersee, now the home of the Brahms Haus Museum, containing 6 highly-finished pencil drawings by Alexander Pock; : I) Mounted officer, with New Year's wishes for 1947, dated on 26 December 1946. II) Bust-portrait of a feldmarschal, 23 March 1947 III) Two sailors, "on a cozy and beautiful afternoon" 20 April 1947 IV.) Bust-portrait of a general "Before setting out for Carinthia" dated 11 May 1947 V) Drum major, "drawn on a cozy Sunday afternoon" of 12 October 1947 VI) Mounted bugler, dated 16 November 1947. Born in Znojmo, Moravia, now in the Czech Republic Alexander Pock (1871-1950), became on of the most popular Austrian military, genre and portrait painters of his period. He studied at the Vienna Academy under Christian Griepenkerl and Carl Rudolph Huber, showing early enthusiasm for military subjects, with a special talent for equestrian portraits. He came to the attention of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, who became an important patron, and provided many prestigious commissions for Pock. Immediately after Franz Ferdinand's assassination in Sarajevo and the outbreak of the First World War, Pock signed up as a war artist, working at the Front in Galicia, Transylvania, in the Krn (Isonzo) and South Tyrol. Pock had great facility as a sketch artist, quickly working up his studies from life into full studio paintings. His extremely naturalistic representations of horses was based on intensive studies from nature, spending many hours at the Spanish Riding School of Vienna. His clients were mainly of the court and aristocracy, especially the Bohemian nobility, and the military hierarchy, a clientele which was decimated by the war, forcing Pock to concentrate on developing new patronage among the bourgeoisie. But he never lost his love of the military and continued to produce images of the Austrian Army during the First Republic, work characterised by his painstaking accuracy, and meticulous rendering of detail, meaning that his work is considered a highly reliable source for historians of the period. Many of Pock's works are inevitably in private hands, but examples can be seen in Austrian Museums including the Heeresgeschichtliches Museum and Museen der Stadt Wien.

Octavo; black cloth, with titles stamped in red on spine and front panel; red topstain; dustjacket; 216pp. Inscribed by Robert Montgomery to Jack Cordes on the front endpaper: "For Jack Cordes - With many thanks and all good wishes. This was my first directorial job. Robert Montgomery - March 1965." Barely discernable trace of handling to lower left corner of front board, else very Near Fine, with the text notably fresh and without browning. Dustjacket is lightly worn, with tiny nicks at spine ends, and a few short tears; still an unusually colorful, Very Good+ example. Basis for the 1947 film noir starring Robert Montgomery, Audrey Totter, and Lloyd Nolan. The screenplay was written by Steve Fisher, and the film marked Montgomery's directorial debut. Photoplays are rarely found signed by the actors involved in the film, and Montgomery's signature is notably uncommon. A superb copy for any film noir enthusiast. Bruccoli A4.1.d.

        A Streetcar Named Desire

New Directions, New York 1947 - A sharp copy of this theater and film highspot. Near Fine book with a small chip at the top of the spine and bumping to the lower edge of the boards. In a Near Fine dust jacket also with a small chip at the top of the spine and two short tears (without loss and each less than 1/2 an inch). But a copy that does not display the ubiquitous toning and fading so often seen and, therefore, uncommon.Tennessee Williams' 1947 masterpiece, a Pulitzer Prize winning work that remains one of the great plays of the American theatre. A Streetcar Named Desire follows Blanche DuBois as she moves to New Orleans to live with her sister, Stella, and Stella's husband Stanley. Like many of Williams' plays, some of the characters are thought to be inspired by members of Williams' own family.A Streetcar Named Desire originally premiered on Broadway on December 3rd 1949, starring Marlon Brando and Jessica Tandy and directed by Eliza Kazan. The London production involved such theatrical luminaries as Vivian Leigh and Laurence Olivier. Of course, the play would be adapted in a classic film version in 1951, which would win four Academy Awards including Best Actress, and was chosen as the Library of Congress as 'culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.' "But Mr. Williams is entitled to his own independence. For he has not forgotten that human beings are the basic subject of art. Out of poetic imagination and ordinary compassion he has spun a poignant and luminous story." (Contemporary New York Times review). Near Fine in Near Fine. dust jacket. [Attributes: First Edition]

Zürich: in officina Frosch. [Froschoviana = Froschauer] 1586 16 Blatt, 611 Seiten, 62 Blatt. - VD 16: C 3057.         Alexis Zorba ou le Rivage de Crete (Zorba The Greek).

Paris: Editions Du Chene, 1947. First French edition of Zorba the Greek, published one year after the first Greek edition and six years prior to the first English translation. Octavo, original wrappers. In very good condition. Kazantzakis traveled to Paris frequently throughout his life and spoke French fluently. From 1902 Kazantzakis studied law at the University of Athens, then went to Paris in 1907 to study philosophy. Here he fell under the influence of Henri Bergson. His 1909 dissertation was titled "Friedrich Nietzsche on the Philosophy of Right and the State. Zorba the Greek is the epic tale of a young Greek intellectual who ventures to escape his bookish life with the aid of the boisterous and mysterious Alexis Zorba. Kazantzakis has made a work of stunning genius. The book is about life. How does one live it? How does one deal with the vicissitudes of it? The tragedies? The failures? Does one stand on the sidelines of life and never jump in? Does one fear getting married or fear having children or fear doing any activity that could fail or come to naught? Zorba tells us what to do. And in the end, when the whole bloody mess comes falling down around us, and all our plans and schemes are for naught, what do you do? Dance. Dance as hard and as wild as you can. Spit and fume and sing and smash your heels into the dirt. And laugh at it all. the absurdity of worry and wondering. Zorba shows us the joy of just "being" and "doing". The novel was adapted into a successful 1964 film of the same name as well as a 1968 musical, Zorba.

American Folksong [Lengthily Inscribed, with Original Watercolor]

New York: Moe Asch / Disc Company of America, 1947. First Edition. An important Guthrie book, containing a number of his best songs; one of his toughest to find in acceptable condition, and very rare signed. In addition to the colorful watercolor presentation, this copy includes an extraordinary, lengthy inscription in which Guthrie reminisces on the birth and death of his daughter Cathy Ann, who had died in an electrical fire a few months previous: " makes me think about the longtime question of how can several good things all take place on some one certain night and then turn right around and see so many worser and sadder things happen on some other night...just a little few of the many good reasons why I drawed such a big pretty mark through that same night and date so I can just sit back now and watch Lily and Sandy and my calendar and almost feel my good feelings grow." Research has failed to turn up the identity of "Lily and Sandy" (no one with these given names is referenced in the finding aid to the Guthrie family papers at the Woody Guthrie Center in Tulsa); but given the context -- elsewhere in his inscription Guthrie describes hearing Sandy "play that piano down there in Dave and Ethel's basement" -- we imagine these to have been musician friends, perhaps from Guthrie's Mermaid Avenue neighborhood, or perhaps visiting to attend on Marjorie during the latter stages of her most recent pregnancy (Woody and Marjorie's second child, Arlo, would be born a few weeks after this inscription was made). One of the more remarkable Guthrie inscriptions we have encountered, in its own right comprising a "lost" manuscript of considerable depth and pathos. Small quarto (25cm). Pictorial, stiff card wrappers; 48pp; illus. Tight, Very Good copy. Watercolor presentation inscription inside front cover: "To Lily & Sandy / 16 June 1947 / The Guthrie Outfit / Coney Island." Further inscribed in blue ink, in the forward margin of each leaf (the inscription thus totalling 24 lines, transcribed below), and signed at final leaf "Woody Guthrie." In custom drop-back, flannel-cloth box.

Fascicule VII Volume II. / Le mŽmento universel. Da Costa. Fascicule I. / Le mŽmento universel. Da Costa. Fascicule II.

[Paris n pr ] [Paris] Jean Aubier [1948] ibd [1949] 1947 - First editions. Original printed wrappers. All published.1.) Folio. Upper wrappers with tear and discoloration to corners, see image. 2.) Quarto. Small hole to lower wrapper; unopened. 3.) Quarto. Small tears to lower wrapper; unopened.¦ ãThe Da Costa appeared unannounced in certain bookshops in St-Germain-des-PrŽs in the autumn of 1947. Anonymous and deliberately designed so that it appeared to be one fascicle, and not the first, of an encyclopaedia being published periodically, it began not only in mid-sentence, but mid-word and bore the heading Fascicle VII, volume II . It was of insolence and immoderate use of sarcasm . The Da Costas, by remaining anonymous, and enthusiastically stirring so much invective into the ideological pot, were obviously not aiming for reconciliation, and if some of the attacks today are obscure . those on the institutions of state, church, learning etc. are still fresh and steaming .Ò (A. Brotchie, 1995 edition of Le Da Costa .)Articles in the Da Costa are by Georges Ambrosino, Georges Bataille, Francis Bouvet, AndrŽ Breton, Jacques Brunius, Jacques Chavy, RenŽ Chenon, Charles Duits, Marcel Duchamp, Jean Ferry, S‡ndor Garay, Jindrich Heisler, Marcel Jean, Robert Lebel, Patrick Waldberg and a few more.
