        KOLGHOSP TVARYN [ANIMAL FARM]

[Munich?] : Prometheus. 1947. Original Wrappers. 8vo. 90 pages. 21 cm. First Edition. In Ukrainian. Translated by Igor Shevchenko under the pseudonym John Chernyatynskyy. Includes a black and white portrait of George Orwell. In the introduction for this edition, Orwell explains his experiences during the Spanish Civil war and his connection to what he describes as “the negative impact of Soviet myth in Western socialist movement. € Shevchenko first read the book in English while living in a displaced persons camp. He chose to publish it under the title “Kolghosp Tvaryn” which directly referenced collectivized farms instead of choosing the more direct translation of “Ferma Tvaryn. € “Shevchenko wrote to Orwell in London, and, working with him by letter, published Animal Farm in Ukrainian. In March 1947, Shevchenko printed around 5, 000 copies to distribute among the Ukrainian refugees in the displaced persons camps of postwar Germany and Austria. But only 2, 000 books were given out; U. S. Soldiers, suspecting the books of being anti-Stalin propaganda, confiscated the rest and handed them over to Soviet authorities to be destroyed. € (Chalupa, “Orwell and the Refugees. €) Subjects: English fiction -- 20th century -- Translations into Ukrainian. OCLC lists one copy worldwide. (British National Library) Some age toning and rubbing. Small edge tears on cover foredge. Backstrip corners bumped. Institutional stamp (M. Y. H. Youth of CDWU. ) on half-title page. Number written on half-title and cover. Small puncture through cover near fore edge continuing to page 11.         Theory of Games and Economic Behavior

Princeton: Princeton University Press, 1947. Second edition of the author's groundbreaking work on game theory. Octavo, original cloth. Red pencil marginalia in the text, near fine in the original dust jacket with some chips to the spine and wear to the extremities. One of the major scientific contributions of the first half of the 20th century" (Goldstine & Wigner). "Had it merely called to our attention the existence and exact nature of certain fundamental gaps in economic theory, the Theory of Games and Economic Behavior... would have been a book of outstanding importance. But it does more than that. It is essentially constructive: where existing theory is considered to be inadequate, the authors put in its place a highly novel analytical apparatus designed to cope with the problem. It would be doing the authors an injustice to say that theirs is a contribution to economics only. The scope of the book is much broader. The techniques applied by the authors in tackling economic problems are of sufficient generality to be valid in political science, sociology, or even military strategy. The applicability to games proper (chess and poker) is obvious from the title. Moreover, the book is of considerable interest from a purely mathematical point of view... The appearance of a book of the caliber of the Theory of Games is indeed a rare event" (World of Mathematics II:1267-84).

        ODE A CHARLES FOURIER

[Attributes: Hard Cover]

A Collection of 21 B. Traven Letters to Ruth Ford, with Related Material Including Three Books

      - A magnificent archive consisting of 21 Typed Letters Initialed (as either "H." or "H.C.") from the elusive and fiercely private B. Traven, nearly all of the letters to the actress Ruth Ford, for whom he professes great love in many of the letters. Accompanied by three books, including a first American edition of *The Treasure of the Sierra Madre*, and assorted clippings. All of the letters Initialed by Traven as "H.C" or "H." as Hal Croves. Croves, one of several aliases used by Traven, was invented by the author in order to present himself as Traven's literary agent, and used mostly in his interaction with legendary film director John Huston throughout the development and filming of Traven's novel *The Treasure of the Sierra Madre*. The letters start in early 1947 and end in 1961, but the majority of them were written during 1947 and correspond with the production of the classic film. Many include references to day-to-day events of the film's production. These are dense letters, nearly all being single space typed. The letters average more than 500 words each, and one letter is over 2000 words. All of the letters have folds from mailing but are otherwise fine with about half of them accompanied by the original postmarked envelopes. Further details available upon request.         KOLGHOSP TVARYN [ANIMAL FARM]

[Munich?] : Prometheus 1947 - Original Wrappers. 8vo. 90 pages.

        PAPERMAKING IN INDO-CHINA

Chillicothe: Mountain House Press, 1947. LIMITED First Edition, one of 182 copies SIGNED by Dard Hunter. With title and chapter headings printed in red and black, 15 photogravure plates of illustrations of papermaking, 1 botanical plate and 2 mounted paper samples. 4to, in the original decorated paper-covered boards backed in red morocco by Peter Franck of Sherman, CT. The binding is paper was handmade by Hunter and is printed with gold Buddhas highlighted in red and green from a 17th century woodcut and is coated with India ink. The spine is lettered in gilt. 102 pp, inclusive of plates, samples and colophon. A very fine copy of this scarce and impressive book, beautifully preserved. FIRST EDITION, LIMITED TO ONLY 182 COPIES HAND-PRINTED BY HUNTER ON HIS OWN PAPER FROM HIS MILL AT LIME ROCK. The book is a result of firsthand studies of papermaking in the papermaking villages Yen-Thai and Lang-Buoi in Tonkin, Indo-China prior to the Japanese invasion and outbreak of the Second World War. Hunter traveled with a photographer from Hanoi whose work is reproduced to illustrate the book. The tipped in paper specimens are from pieces brought back by Hunter, the first being the best Tonkin handmade paper and the other being a specimen of pure Daphne paper. This is an important record of a gone-by art form, but is also full of interesting observations of the local people and the political situation of the time. The woodcut used on the paper boards was procured by Hunter while in China, the one used for the title-page device is from Tonkin. The typographical ornaments used as chapter headings and borders were cut and cast by Dard Hunter, Junior. The paper used was made by Hunter in 1932 in Lime Rock, CT. The limitation on the printing of this title was dictated by both the size of the paper samples brought back from Tonkin and the availability of his own Lime Rock paper.

Agreed, and you send me a copy of the score and each separ[at]e part. Yours very truly. " "With Bartók, [Kodály] was one of the creators of a new Hungarian art music based on folk sources, and he laid the foundation for the development of a broadbased and musically literate culture. With the success of the Psalmus hungaricus Kodály had made a fresh start, and his career gained further momentum with the premières of the Singspiel Háry János (Budapest, 16 October 1926) and of the six-movement suite drawn from it (Barcelona, 24 March 1927). These works consolidated Kodály';s stature the world over: Toscanini and Mengelberg, Ansermet and Furtwängler were among the first to include them in their programmes. " László E sze et al in Grove Music Online.Universal published Kodály's arrangement for cello and piano of Bach's 3 Chorale Preludes in 1924; we have not located an arrangement by Kodály for string orchestra of any of Bach's chorales published by AMP.

Handsome red cloth boards and vellum backstrip. Gilt lettering and illustration. Teg. Only very light wear to spine and boards -- strong VG+ or near fine exterior. Front loose flyleaf with toned marks. This book is prone to browning on random pages (but often on pages 91-2). This isn't offsetting or foxing, but rather something in the paper composition.         Twelve Wood Engravings to the Psalms

1947 - Folio. 15ff., loose, as issued. A set of twelve proof illustrations, each labeled as such in pencil, plus a title page and Table of Contents, for an unpublished edition of Psalms by Gustav Wolf. The artist's watercolor sketches were in the process of being transferred to engraved blocks when he died in 1947. What remained were notes to himself written on the back of the sketches intended to guide him as he transferred the feel of the multitonal watercolors to the single-color gradients of black & white prints. After Wolf's death, his notes were transcribed onto a single sheet and included with this group of proofs of his final illustrations "to show something of the fitful, unpredictable process of creation."Wolf, who studied under Hans Thoma, fled Germany in 1938 and settled in the United States, where he continued his work as an illustrator. One of his more noteworthy contributions was the set of thirty-two woodcuts he produced for The Book of Job, published by the Cummington Press in 1944. Reflecting their shared Old Testament inspiration, the illustrations for Psalms and The Book of Job show grand, multi-dimensional landscapes and the awesome power of Jehovah over the heavens and earth. Beyond the similarities in their subject matter, the images in Psalms also depict themes and symbols that were in The Book of Job, such as crystalline mountains and stars surrounded by swirling whirlpools of creation. In many ways, this unpublished edition of Psalms would have acted as a follow-up volume to the Book of Job, and was perhaps intended as such while Wolf was alive. The loose leaves are housed together in a paper chemise with a label designed by Wolf. Light toning and minor creasing to leaves and chemise; transcription of Wolf's commentary affixed to cardboard, which is toned and has darkened the inside of the chemise; else fine. Overall a fine portfolio of Gustav Wolf's last unpublished work. [Attributes: Soft Cover]
