MESONS, THE PION & THE MUON: "On the Disintegration of Negative Mesons," "The Decay of Negative Mesotrons in Matter," "Mechanism of Capture of Slow Mesons," and "On the Two-Meson Hypothesis" (Physical Review; Volume 71 No. 3, pp. 209-210; Volume 72 No. 5, pp. 314-315, 320-321; Volume 72 No. 6, pp. 506-509) -- 3 Volumes

Lancaster, PA: The American Physical Society, 1947. First Edition. Wraps. Very Good. The first meson was discovered in 1936. For many years physicists believed this to be the pi meson (now pion) predicted by Yukawa in 1935. Then in 1947, a series of four papers led to the realization that there are in fact two mesons (the pion and the muon) and the one that had been discovered in 1936 is the muon. In the first paper in early 1947, three Italian physicists, Conversi, Pancini and Piccioni, noted unusual results in the decay of cosmic ray mesons. A few months later, Fermi, Teller, Weisskopf, and John Wheeler concluded from these results that the interaction of mesons was much weaker than predicted by theory. Shortly thereafter, Marshak and Bethe built on these findings to propose the two-meson hypothesis. Note: Three of the authors (Fermi, Wheeler and Bethe) became Nobel Laureates. 145-214, 281-326, 439-539 pp. 4to. Green paper wraps that are quite clean inside and out, very minor age toning to spines.

        PAPERMAKING IN INDO-CHINA.

Chillicothe 1947, Hunter. Quarter red morocco leather over. boards, vellum corner-tips, 102p., 18 b.w. photos, two bamboo. paper samples tipped in, beautiful hand bound by Peter Frank. in quarter red crushed morocco, patterned end papers. RARE. An account of papermaking in Viet-Nam prior to the beginning of the war with the French. During the war, the hand made papermaking industry was virtually destroyed. This work is the recorded record of what that industry produced. Cottage based, this indigenous industry utilized Daphne bark. Very fascinating account of a now dead craft tradition. ** LIMITED EDITION NOTE: Note in a copy of this book which sold in a 1985 auction, contained a Hunter letter stating that the actual number of copies he did amounted to only 155 copies, rather than the projected 182 which were planned. Owing to the lack of ample paper samples, the total number was therefore reduced down. The last page of this work shows the colophon, hand numbered and signed in ink by Dard Hunter. * BIZZARE BUT TRUE STORY WHILE HUNTER RESEARCHED THIS BOOK: This book is printed on hand-made deckle edge paper, made in 1932 at Lime Rock, Connecticut by Dart Hunter. This extraordinary work covers the author's experiences during travels to Yen-Tha and Lang-Buoi. On the way his vehicle struck a young Tonkinese girl, knocking her from the roadway and killing her. This accident had a major effect on Hunter, who felt guilty for the girls lost life in his pursuit of the ancient paper-making villages of Tonkin, Indo-China [Old Vietnam]. The work was actually written in 1935, upon his return. Owing to the war with Japan, the book was postponed. * THE BINDING: The book was beautifully hand-bound by Peter Frank, in one quarter crushed red morocco, the boards were covered with Hunter's own hand-made paper, printed with gilt Buddha's, each of which shows a different Mudra with red Mandalas. The central Buddha decoration is also gilt Buddha, but done in large size, and is seated upon a green Lotus. This Buddhist theme was done after an ancient Chinese woodcut print. The book is 20 x 30 cm. in size. * There were two variations to this title. The first was hand bound by Peter Frank and did NOT come with a slipcase. The slip cased version was done later from the remaining unbound sheets and were hand-bound by Gray Parrott in his typical style of slipcase, which matched the red morocco leather binding. All copies had vellum corners, the other variant point, was the type of paper used, which was either complete in cream paper, or two-thirds cream with white for the b.w. plates paper; the preferred is the entire work in cream, and that is what we have here. * DARD HUNTER: Dard Hunter [1883-1966] came from a family of printers and publishers who began their work in Ohio in 1812. All of Dard Hunter's works are rare and costly; they were issued in very small and numbered editions, limited to the small number of paper samples and specimens, all copies were then personally signed by Dard Hunter. * ORIGIN OF PAPER: "It is recorded in ancient Chinese literature that paper was invented in 105 A.D., in Lei-Yang, Hunan Province in China by the eunuch Ts'ai Lun, a member of the Imperial Guard." See page 41 for this citation. * FASCINATING FOOT NOTE: There are photos of the three Daphne papermaking plants reproduced from the treatise by Dr. N. Wallich, Calcutta, 1820. * CONDITION: The book is bound as issued, with velum corners, the spine has a some darkened areas and minor rubbing to the head and tail, otherwise the contents are clean, bright as issued. * This is DARD HUNTER'S Rarest and most extraordinary of all his books. * Color scans can be sent by email.         MASQUE OF MERCY

New York Henry Holt and Company 1947 - 2 volumes. First Edition and a FINE ASSOCIATION COPY INSCRIBED BY ROBERT FROST, dated 1950. 8vo, publisher’s original light blue cloth lettered in gilt on the spine. In the original dustjacket. [6], 23, [1 blank] pp. A very fresh and well preserved copy, the blue cloth excellent but for trivial rubbing at the extremities, quite handsome with only some expected age mellowing and a small chip at tip of the lightly faded jacket spine panel. A few unobtrusive spots on three early leaves likely caused by something once laid in. FIRST EDITION AND A FINE AND PLEASING SIGNED ASSOCIATION COPY, inscribed by Frost to Virginia Proctor, secretary to Harvard President James Byrant Conant. Though Frost tenure at Harvard was short, his friendship with Mrs. Proctor lasted well beyond his years in Cambridge. It was President Conant who first cited Frost as "The Poet of New England" when Frost was given an honorary degree of Litt.D. in 1937. In 1938 Frost resigned from Amherst and was elected to Harvard's Board of Overseers and that year also saw him placed in the English department at the university. Conant reappointed Frost for the years 1939 through 1942. Though Frost's formal ties with Harvard would end in that year, his association with Virginia Proctor would continue for years following. The inscription on this 1947 publication reads, "To Virginia / From R. F. Frost / 1950" This is the FIRST EDITION of Robert Frost’s experiment in blank verse play in which Biblical characters in modern settings discuss ethics and man’s relation to God. "Mr. Frost, who has never been impressed by superficial orthodoxies, rolls up his poetic sleeves and discusses the possibility of reconciling justice with mercy in a sharp wit, a firm logic, and a strong faith in God and man. Here is proof again, and shining proof, of his genius."- Publisher [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Transportation Report. Dammam to Riyadh. Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. A study for the Development of a Transportation System between the Persian Gulf and the City of Riyadh [with:] Taqrir al-Naqliyat bayna al-Dammam wal-Riyadh

San Francisco: Bechtel, Morrison-Knudsen, Sverdrup & Parcel, 1947. Produced in a small number. Illustrated with 14 plates with captioned photographs, figures, or charts, and a folding map. English volume: xii, 66 pp.; Arabic volume reproduced from manuscript text: [x], 78, [1] pp. 2 vols. 4to. Dark green morocco, spine and upper cover titled in gilt (English volume titled in English in Arabic), pictorial endsheets. Minor rubbing (spine ends of Arabic volume rubbed and scuffed, small loss at head). Very good plus. Tiny owner name inkstamp on top edge. Produced in a small number. Illustrated with 14 plates with captioned photographs, figures, or charts, and a folding map. English volume: xii, 66 pp.; Arabic volume reproduced from manuscript text: [x], 78, [1] pp. 2 vols. 4to. The King's New Railroad. Fascinating glimpse of a key postwar infrastructure development project in Saudi Arabia, the report outlining possible routes between the Gulf port city of Dammam and the capital city, Riyadh, "the center of all political and financial activities ... supplied at excessive cost with food, clothing, and other materials shipped to ports on both the Persian Gulf and Red Sea and then carried on long hauls by camels over the old camel trails or by trucks over the one coast to coast road which is little more than a trail." The report, jointly produced by a consortium of the construction firms Bechtel, Morrison-Knudsen, and Sverdrup & Parcel, discusses possible routes, options for rail transit and a highway system, construction and maintenance costs, planning, benefits, and an appendix on the Sand Hills Highway in California. The project was approved by Ibn Saud, and construction on the railway began in 1949. It was the first major rail project since the 1908 Hijaz rail line on the western side of the peninsula. The first link connected Dammam with the oil center of Abqaiq in eastern Nejd, and the railroad was completed in 1952. A key document in the development of Saudi Arabia. OCLC records only a handful of copies of the English text, and no copies of the Arabic version of the report. OCLC: 17072696 (5 locations, English text only)

Autograph Album]: Signatures of Joe Liggins and The Honeydrippers

[New York] 1947 - Autograph album. Measuring 4 x 6 inches. String-tied maroon paper wrappers with "Autographs" on the front wrap. Very good with the silk tie a bit frayed, general rubbing and the corners a little chipped. An album containing the signatures of the five members of the rhythm and blues band Joe Liggins and The Honeydrippers," collected by "Helen" who saw them perform at The Harlem Renaissance Ballroom, the premiere venue for African-American performers and sports in New York. The group was organized by Joe Liggins (1915-1987), an African American pianist from Guthrie, Oklahoma, who had moved to California and played with a number of bands before starting his own, at once becoming a mainstay of the R&B circuit in Los Angeles. His group's breakaway hit was called "The Honeydripper" which topped the Billboard R&B chart (then called the "Race Chart") in 1945, remaining there for 18 weeks, tied with Louis Jordan's "Choo Choo Ch'Boogie" for longest running chart topper. A number of other hits followed, including "Rag Mop" and "Pink Champagne." Each member of the band - Joe Liggns, Little Willie Jackson, James Jackson, Frank Pasley, and Preston "Peppy" Prince - signed the book "To Helen, best wishes, [signature], [instrument], Honey Drippers," save Liggins who omitted the name of his instrument and the band and Jackson who omitted the name of his instrument. There are five other signatures in the album that we have been unable to identify. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

"The Tin Star" [story in] Collier's Magazine

New York: Crowell-Collier Publishing Company. December 6, 1947. First. First edition. Folio. Slightly cocked, a little foxing and minor rubbing, original mailing label of magazine subscriber, overall a very good or better copy. Original appearance of Cunningham's story "The Tin Star," which was the basis for the classic Western film High Noon starring Gary Cooper and Grace Kelly in her first major role, written by Carl Foreman and directed by Fred Zinnemann. The film, often described as "a western for people who don't like westerns," is notable for several reasons including its brave and not-so-subtle allegory of blacklisting, its use of a real-time cinematic scenario, and its marketing of a theme song ("Do Not Forsake Me"). Cooper won an Academy Award, and Dimitri Tiomkin won two (one for the song, one for the entire score). The magazine also includes Jack Finney's second published story, and an article by Irving Wallace. An elusive source for a seminal film, High Noon was the highest rated of the eight Westerns selected in the original AFI list of America's 100 Greatest Movies. .

        STEEPLE BUSH

New York Henry Holt and Company 1947 - First edition, AN EXCELLENT ASSOCIATION COPY WARMLY INSCRIBED BY ROBERT FROST, SIGNED AND DATED 1947. 8vo, publisher’s original green cloth lettered in gilt on the spine. In the original dustjacket. 63, notes pp. A fine copy with only a touch of very minor mellowing to the spine tips. The jacket with some edge wear and the jacket spine panel toned and with some loss at the head and foot. FIRST EDITION AND A SCARCE SIGNED ASSOCIATION COPY, warmly inscribed by Frost to Virginia Proctor, secretary to Harvard President James Byrant Conant. Though Frost's tenure at Harvard was short, his friendship with Mrs. Though Frost's formal ties with Harvard would end in that year, his association with Virginia Proctor would continue for many years following. The inscription on this 1947 publication reads, "To Virginia Proctor / From her old friend / Robert Frost / August 25 1947" STEEPLE BUSH Includes over forty poems. The poems in this volume carry on the early and characteristic lyric note, which has never been clearer and surer. The people and places of New England are here too, and the earthy, warm, and hearty humor of this highly individual specimen of American character - the New Englander - is as evident and as droll as ever. For pure poetry, and for the kind of very American perception which is the woof and web of his art, this volume - which takes its title from new England’s native plant called Steeple bush - is a distinguished book."
