Collection of 12 vintage black-and-white still photographs (1 image duplicated) from the 1947 film, directed by John Ford and based on the novel "The Power and the Glory" by Graham Greene. An important intersection with one of the great American directors and one of the great British writers in the mid-twentieth century. 9 of the photos are single weight, 2 are linen backed key copies, and 1 is double weight. 1 photograph is a candid shot of Dolores Del Rio with members of the crew, 1 still is from the film with a studio byline at the bottom margin, and the remaining 11 stills are either reference stills from the film or portrait shots of Ms. Del Rio in costume. A publicity tag accompanying one of the photos contains a quote from the actress: "They don't want me to act, they want me to be a clothes horse!"

The Moment and Other Essays is a collection of twenty-nine of Virginia Woolf's essays, selected and published posthumously by her husband Leonard Woolf. Her second posthumously published set of essays, following The Death of the Moth in 1942, The Moment contains a mix of previously published and unpublished essays, including: "On Being Ill," "The Artist and Politics," "The Leaning Tower," "On Re-reading Novels," and "Sterne's Ghost," among others. Many of the essays contain Woolf's trademark literary commentary in which she commemorates rather than analyzes literary figures and their works. Vanessa shared a very close relationship with her daughter Angelica Vanessa Garnett (née Bell, 1918-2012), the youngest of her three children. Writing to her son Julian in May 1936, Vanessa describes her affection for Angelica: " having a daughter has been in a way the most terrific experience of my life - that's to say the most penetrating, intimate, I don't know how to put it, experience."       (1947). 1947 - schönes signiertes Blatt. Wilhelm Schnarrenberger (* 30. Juni 1892 in Buchen im Odenwald; † 12. April 1966 in Karlsruhe) war ein deutscher Maler. Wilhelm Schnarrenberger zählt zu den Vertretern der Neuen Sachlichkeit. Er ist der Sohn eines Gymnasialprofessors und machte 1911 sein Abitur. Von 1911 bis 1915 besuchte er die Königliche Kunstgewerbeschule München und studierte parallel in München Architektur. Ab 1913 war er Schüler des Gebrauchsgrafikers Fritz Helmuth Ehmcke und ein Freund von Karl Rössing. 1918 wurde er zum Dienst im Ersten Weltkrieg eingezogen. Er war 1919 für die Zeitschrift Der Weg und ab 1920 für die Zeitschriften Wieland und Simplicissimus tätig. Schnarrenberger unterrichtete von 1921 bis 1933 an der Badischen Landeskunstschule. 1924 war er Gründungsmitglied der ORNA-Werkstätten für Werbung und Innendekoration. Unter den Nationalsozialisten war seine Kunst verpönt und wurde 1937 als entartet gebrandmarkt und verboten, nachdem er bereits seit 1933 nicht mehr unterrichten durfte. 1933 übersiedelte er mit seiner Familie nach Berlin, wo er versuchte, als freischaffender Gebrauchsgrafiker seinen Lebensunterhalt zu verdienen. Den bevorstehenden Krieg voraussehend zog er 1938 nach Lenzkirch im Schwarzwald, wo er zusammen mit seiner Frau Melitta (1909-1996) eine kleine Ferienpension eröffnete. Hier entdeckte er das für sein späteres Werk so wichtige Thema des Stilllebens. 1947 wurde er zum Professor an die Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste Karlsruhe berufen. 1962 erhielt er für sein künstlerisches Werk den Hans-Thoma-Staatspreis. Schnarrenberger legte stets auf das handwerkliche Können seiner Schüler großen Wert, so mussten diese zuerst das Zeichnen von architektonischen Gebäuden und Alltagsgegenständen erlernen, bevor er sie malen ließ. Screw binding, 74 black paper pages with a single black and white gelatin print mounted recto only to each, most measuring approximately 7.5" x 9" with brief, typed captions mounted below. Additional print mounted to front cover; 75 photographs total. Album exterior moderately worn, cloth dry and flaking. Three sections of material loss at outer edge of covers and to upper rear, likely mouse-bitten, similar loss to edges of final two pages (not effecting photos). Two images missing captions. Photographs well preserved, occasional mild wear. About very good. An impressive collection of 75 well-annotated, predominantly aerial photographs of pre-statehood Alaska, likely compiled by a U.S. Army Officer stationed at Fort Richardson near Anchorage, just after WWII. 49 images captured from aircraft of some of the most spectacular, unspoiled environments anywhere. Cities, settlements and geographical locations include Galena, Ketchikan, Port Alexander, Sitka, Port Althrop, Skagway, Juneau, Fort Seward, Valdez, Anchorage, Barrow, Nome, the Taku Glacier, Mount McKinley, Mount St. Elias, and Mt. Moffet. The remaining 26 prints, equally as beautiful, though taken at ground level, display the cultural and trade aspects present around 1947. Highlights include an Eskimo mother and daughter on Nelson Island, fishing boats in Ketchikan, totem poles on Wrangell Island, a midnight baseball game, and a full salmon scowl at a cannery in southeast Alaska. Five prints with lettering in the negative, though none with clear evidence as to the purpose behind their creation. A very good copy in the slightly rubbed and nicked dust jacket. First edition, first printing. Roger Senhouse's copy, sent to him by literary agents Pearn, Pollinger & Higham for the preparation of the first UK edition, published by Secker and Warburg the following year, here containing an illuminating collection of ephemera and correspondence exchanged between Senhouse, Frederic Warburg, Trilling, and critic Cyril Connolly over a period of two years, tracing the novel's UK publication from Senhouse's lukewarm assessment of Trilling's capabilities to its eventual success. The Middle of the Journey, a roman-à-clef of the McCarthyist era in American politics, was Trilling's first and only novel. As professor of English at Columbia University, New York, he had already published two books of criticism, on Matthew Arnold and E. M. Forster, and a number of short stories. Roger Senhouse and Fredric Warburg established Secker and Warburg when they assumed control of failing Secker in 1935. They soon became known as "the Trotskyist publishers" owing to their willingness to publish anti-Communist works by left-wing authors. As a young man Senhouse had notably been the last lover of Lytton Strachey: the sadomasochistic nature of their relationship was revealed with the publication of their letters in 2005. Cyril Connolly was close friends with Senhouse and responsible for arguably his greatest success as a publisher, suggesting to George Orwell that he try Secker and Warburg after the author had parted company with Communist-sympathiser Victor Gollancz following the publication of The Road to Wigan Pier (1937). The laid-in material includes two typed letters each from each of Trilling (both signed) and Connolly (one signed), various documents annotated extensively by Senhouse, as well as two further letters from him to Trilling (both signed). Those involved in the novel's publication consistently express concerns over Trilling's style and characterisation, though appear to have been divided over the appeal of its political message; Connolly and an unnamed reviewer both identify the influence of E. M. Forster. Senhouse's own letters refer to his continuing friendship with Lytton Strachey's sister Dorothy Bussy, and also to the postwar recession in British publishing that would lead to the absorption of Secker and Warburg into Heinemann in 1951.       NY: Sloane. (1947). The first in his series of historical novels about the settling of the American west in the 19th century. The second book in the series, The Way West, won the 1950 Pulitzer Prize for fiction. This book was a Pulitzer Prize nominee in 1948, is one of Jeff Dykes's "Western High Spots," and was the basis for the 1952 Howard Hawks movie starring Kirk Douglas that was nominated for two Academy Awards. Inscribed in Lexington, Kentucky in the year of publication to fellow Lexington residents: "For Elizabeth and Virgil [Steed], with the best of wishes," and signed "Bud Guthrie." Guthrie spent 22 years as a reporter and editor for the Lexington Leader, before moving back to Montana shortly after The Way West was published. Moderate dampstaining to cloth, with loss to the spine lettering; very good in a very good, spine-sunned dust jacket with small, internally tape-reinforced edge chips. First Edition. Hardcover.

Illustrated with six original full page engravings. Fine in slightly worn and mottled slipcase and chemise. First edition of one of Genet's least common works, a long poem in homage to a fellow prisoner. At least one of the extant manuscripts of the poem dates from 1944. From a total edition of 88 copies (including eight for presentation), this is copy 49 of 71 press-numbered copies on Arches. Although they are not mentioned in the colophon, this edition is illustrated with six original engravings of chiefly homoerotic subjects by Genet's friend, Leonor Fini. Each of the engravings is numbered in pencil and signed in the plate by Fini. Additionally, the first engraving bears her signed ink inscription: "Pour Roland Fernandez Leonor Fini."

        The New Economics: Keynes’ Influence on Theory and Public Policy.

Signed by economists Paul Samuelson and James Tobin, who contributed essays to this volume. Other contributors include John Maynard Keynes, Wassily Leontief, Lloyd Metzler, Gottfried Haberler, Wassily Leontief, Abba Lerner, Joan Robinson, Joseph A. Schumpeter and Jan Tinbergen among others. A very nice volume dedicated to the work and influence of Lord Keynes. Paul Samuelson is one of the developers of both neo-Keynesian and neoclassical economics, the latter of which still dominates mainstream economics. He was awarded the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences in 1970. One of Samuelson's many novel contributions was that he generalized and applied mathematical methods developed for the study of thermodynamics to the field of economics. His inspiration for doing so came, in part, from his mentor, polymath Edwin Bisdwell Wilson who was a former Yale student of the founder of chemical thermodynamics, Willard Gibbs. Samuelson, therefore, is a successful example of interdisciplinarity, and he combined these ideas in his magnum opus Foundations of Economic Analysis.

In the introduction for this edition, Orwell explains his experiences during the Spanish Civil war and his connection to what he describes as “the negative impact of Soviet myth in Western socialist movement. € Shevchenko first read the book in English while living in a displaced persons camp. He chose to publish it under the title “Kolghosp Tvaryn” which directly referenced collectivized farms instead of choosing the more direct translation of “Ferma Tvaryn. € “Shevchenko wrote to Orwell in London, and, working with him by letter, published Animal Farm in Ukrainian. In March 1947, Shevchenko printed around 5, 000 copies to distribute among the Ukrainian refugees in the displaced persons camps of postwar Germany and Austria. But only 2, 000 books were given out; U. S. Cet ouvrage n?a jamais été publié malgré son immense intérêt historique et son prix littéraire. Edmond JONGLEUX est né en 1869. Il entre à la Mairie de Bourges en 1896 et en devient le Secrétaire Général. Il est admis à la Société des GENS DE LETTRE, présenté par Paul Féval fils et Charles Le Goffic Académicien, en juin 1922. Il développera une activité Historique et littéraire locale abondante. Son ouvrage « Bourges sous la Botte Allemande ou 50 mois d?esclavage » lui vaudra le Prix Littéraire du Syndicat d?Initiative pour les deux années 1947 et 48. Sa position Secrétaire Général de la Mairie de Bourges pendant les années d?Occupation lui permettront d?être un observateur majeur de la vie quotidienne des berruyers en période d?occupation.         A Collection of 21 B. Traven Letters to Ruth Ford, with Related Material Including Three Books

      - A magnificent archive consisting of 21 Typed Letters Initialed (as either "H." or "H.C.") from the elusive and fiercely private B. Traven, nearly all of the letters to the actress Ruth Ford, for whom he professes great love in many of the letters. Accompanied by three books, including a first American edition of *The Treasure of the Sierra Madre*, and assorted clippings. All of the letters Initialed by Traven as "H.C" or "H." as Hal Croves. Croves, one of several aliases used by Traven, was invented by the author in order to present himself as Traven's literary agent, and used mostly in his interaction with legendary film director John Huston throughout the development and filming of Traven's novel *The Treasure of the Sierra Madre*. The letters start in early 1947 and end in 1961, but the majority of them were written during 1947 and correspond with the production of the classic film. Many include references to day-to-day events of the film's production. These are dense letters, nearly all being single space typed. The letters average more than 500 words each, and one letter is over 2000 words. All of the letters have folds from mailing but are otherwise fine with about half of them accompanied by the original postmarked envelopes. Further details available upon request. Includes a black and white portrait of George Orwell. In the introduction for this edition, Orwell explains his experiences during the Spanish Civil war and his connection to what he describes as “the negative impact of Soviet myth in Western socialist movement. € Shevchenko first read the book in English while living in a displaced persons camp. He chose to publish it under the title “Kolghosp Tvaryn” which directly referenced collectivized farms instead of choosing the more direct translation of “Ferma Tvaryn. € “Shevchenko wrote to Orwell in London, and, working with him by letter, published Animal Farm in Ukrainian. In March 1947, Shevchenko printed around 5, 000 copies to distribute among the Ukrainian refugees in the displaced persons camps of postwar Germany and Austria. But only 2, 000 books were given out; U. S.
