New York: Henry Holt and Company, 1947. 2 volumes. First Edition and a FINE ASSOCIATION COPY INSCRIBED BY ROBERT FROST, dated 1950. 8vo, publisher’s original light blue cloth lettered in gilt on the spine. In the original dustjacket. [6], 23, [1 blank] pp. A very fresh and well preserved copy, the blue cloth excellent but for trivial rubbing at the extremities, quite handsome with only some expected age mellowing and a small chip at tip of the lightly faded jacket spine panel. A few unobtrusive spots on three early leaves likely caused by something once laid in. FIRST EDITION AND A FINE AND PLEASING SIGNED ASSOCIATION COPY, inscribed by Frost to Virginia Proctor, secretary to Harvard President James Byrant Conant. Though Frost tenure at Harvard was short, his friendship with Mrs. Proctor lasted well beyond his years in Cambridge. It was President Conant who first cited Frost as "The Poet of New England" when Frost was given an honorary degree of Litt.D. in 1937. In 1938 Frost resigned from Amherst and was elected to Harvard's Board of Overseers and that year also saw him placed in the English department at the university. Conant reappointed Frost for the years 1939 through 1942. Though Frost's formal ties with Harvard would end in that year, his association with Virginia Proctor would continue for years following. The inscription on this 1947 publication reads, "To Virginia / From R. F. Frost / 1950" This is the FIRST EDITION of Robert Frost’s experiment in blank verse play in which Biblical characters in modern settings discuss ethics and man’s relation to God. “Mr. Frost, who has never been impressed by superficial orthodoxies, rolls up his poetic sleeves and discusses the possibility of reconciling justice with mercy in a sharp wit, a firm logic, and a strong faith in God and man. Here is proof again, and shining proof, of his genius.”- Publisher

Trial of the Major War Criminals

October 1946, 1947 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A fascinating collection of transcripts and records from the Nuremberg war criminal trials of 1945-46. Volume I contains pre-trial documents together with the Tribunal's judgment and sentence of the defendants. Volumes II-XXII deal with the proceedings of the trials, and contain transcripts in English, whilst volumes XXV onwards contain documents admitted in evidence for the trial. Containing volumes:1-171921-2225-262832-3537-39With a folding diagram of the organisation of the German police to volume XXXVIII, and photographic illustrations in the text of the evidence volumes. The Nuremberg trials were held by the Allied forces after World War II, most notable for the prosecution of prominent members of the political, military, and economic leadership of Nazi Germany. The trials were held in the city of Nuremberg, Germany. The first, and best known of these trials, described as the greatest trial in history by Norman Birkett, one of the British judges who presided over it, was the trial of the major war criminals before the International Military Tribunal (IMT). Held between 20 November 1945 and 1 October 1946, the Tribunal was given the task of trying 23 of the most important political and military leaders of the Third Reich, though one of the defendants, Martin Bormann, was tried in absentia, while another, Robert Ley, committed suicide within a week of the trial's commencement. Not included were Adolf Hitler, Heinrich Himmler, and Joseph Goebbels, all of whom had committed suicide several months before the indictment was signed. Defendants included Hermann Goring, Rudolf Hess, Dr Hjalmar Schacht, Albert Speer and twenty other prominent members of the Nazi regime. Thirty volumes of forty-two only. Condition: In blue cloth bindings. Externally, quite smart, though with some sunning and a few marks. Light bumping to the extremities also, and some slight wear to the extremities of five volumes. . Seven hinges are strained, with two failed. Ink signature to front board of one volume. Slight dampstaining to two volumes. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean, though with some marginal browning to the pages of thirteen volumes. Ink inscription to front pastedown of eight volumes, with institutional ink stamps to fifteen volumes and an institutional label to front pastedown of one volume. Overall: VERY GOOD..

[Munich?] : Prometheus, 1947. Original Wrappers. 8vo. 90 pages. 21 cm. First Edition. In Ukrainian. Translated by Igor Shevchenko under the pseudonym John Chernyatynskyy. Includes a black and white portrait of George Orwell. In the introduction for this edition, Orwell explains his experiences during the Spanish Civil war and his connection to what he describes as "the negative impact of Soviet myth in Western socialist movement." Shevchenko first read the book in English while living in a displaced persons camp. He chose to publish it under the title 'Kolghosp Tvaryn' which directly referenced collectivized farms instead of choosing the more direct translation of 'Ferma Tvaryn.' "Shevchenko wrote to Orwell in London, and, working with him by letter, published Animal Farm in Ukrainian. In March 1947, Shevchenko printed around 5, 000 copies to distribute among the Ukrainian refugees in the displaced persons camps of postwar Germany and Austria. But only 2, 000 books were given out; U. S. Soldiers, suspecting the books of being anti-Stalin propaganda, confiscated the rest and handed them over to Soviet authorities to be destroyed." (Chalupa, "Orwell and the Refugees.") Subjects: English fiction -- 20th century -- Translations into Ukrainian. OCLC lists one copy worldwide. (British National Library) Some age toning and rubbing. Wrappers detached with tear along backstrip. Institutional stamp (M. Y. H. Youth of CDWU. ) on half-title page. Number stamped on half-title and cover. Numbered label and hand written number on cover near top edge. Good condition. (UKR-1-24c)

[Attributes: Soft Cover]

Field Guide of Birds of the West Indies

New York, NY: MacMillan, 1947.. FIRST MACMILLAN PRINTING. Octavo, pp.xii, 257, [1], blank. With colour plate illustrations and line drawings by Earle Poole. Publisher's brown cloth titled in black to spine and front board, map endpapers, original dust-jacket. Book is fine; jacket a little soiled and torn, price-clipped to foot but showing $3.75 to top of flap. A very good copy. The acclaimed work by the ornithologist James Bond, whose name was famously appropriated for fiction's most celebrated hero. The original edition was published by the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia, in a different format. This eyecatching edition 'has been completely rewritten in a popular style', and is certainly the printing which influenced Fleming; when writing his debut novel in 1952, this version of the book was on his shelf and not the obscure original work; Fleming had purchased land and built a Jamaican home in 1945 and, according to Ben McIntyre, (and re-affirmed by Fleming throughout his life), while pondering his character Fleming 'simply lifted the name from his bookshelves, his eye having alighted upon 'Field Guide to [sic] the Birds of the West Indies' by James Bond, the standard reference book published by MacMillan in 1947'. Due to the connection, this book has simply dried up in recent years- whilst reprints may be obtained, this 1947 first edition is rather scarce, with no copy appearing in book searches at the time of writing.

Other than the habitual tanning of the poor quality paper used in production this is a superb fine copy, the binding firm and without tears, the contentsclean throughout and without inscriptions or stamps. An exceptional example of an important edition. This edition, with a preface written by Orwell especially for it, was intended for distribution among Ukrainian refugees. Whilst Fenwick does not give an indication of the print run, it is believed that approximately 2000 copies were distributed before the remainder of the edition was confiscated. The preface ?an account of Orwell?s early life, his experiences in the Spanish Civil War, his views on Stalinism and the Soviet regime, and his belief in the importance of the Socialist movement? was later translated back into English for inclusion in Collected Essays, Journalism and Letters. Others have come out in the last 2 decades, but this was the first (many, though by no means all, photos are by Vishniak) . Published as a memorial to these extinct communities, the book is bound in attractive heavy red linen with gilt spine and cover lettering in English and Yiddish, with a paper label (with a woodcut design) on the front.         We The Living

Cassell & Co., Ltd, 1947. EIGHTH EDITION PRESENTATION COPY. 1 vol., inscribed and dated on the front blank endleaf by Rand "To Eugene D. Williams - - with sincere admiration - Ayn Rand July 21, 1951". Bound in the publisher's original blue/gray cloth, head and foot of spine ever so slightly rubbed, inner and outer hinges fine, some light offsetting to front blank otherwise VERY GOOD. "We the Living" is Ayn Rand's first novel. Published in 1936, the story is set in Soviet Russia, from which Rand had fled to America ten years earlier. The immigrant Rand was startled by the failure of American intellectuals and politicians to uphold the American ideals of individualism and freedom, and she was horrified by the widespread acceptance, even sympathy, that greeted the spread of communism, socialism and fascism in Europe. Rand resolved to expose the "noble ideal" of collectivism, through the story of three young people whose lives are sacrificed by an all-powerful state. Originally titled "Airtight," this unvarnished account details the methods by which the spirits of its best citizens are suffocated by the collectivist state. The initial American publication of "We the Living" was not a commercial success. Macmillan did not expect the novel to sell and did little marketing. Initial sales were slow and although they picked up later, Macmillan destroyed the plates before the first printing of 3000 copies sold out. Eighteen months after its release, the novel was out of print. Rand's royalties from the first American edition amounted to $100. An edition revised by Rand was published in 1959, following the success of Atlas Shrugged (1957).
