The Background of Islam, being a Sketch of Arabian History in pre-Islamic Times

Alexandria: Whitehead, Morris,, 1947. Octavo. Original green cloth-backed printed boards. A little rubbed and spotted on the boards, the corners softened, endpapers differentially browned, text-block a touch toned, but overall very good, the turn-ins of the original pale green tissue dust jacket, tipped onto the pastedowns, remains a very good copy. First edition, limited to 500 numbered copies signed by Philby, this numbered 316. Philby had originally approached John Murray to publish the present work with the intention of establishing himself as an authority on pre-islamic Arabia, but Murray rejected the manuscript having established that much of Philby's source material had been superseded. Philby, undaunted in his self-belief, published at his own expense. Philby had converted to Islam in 1930 and was known among his Arabian associates as Sheikh Abdullah. A moderately fragile and uncommon book, this copy retaining what certainly appears to be the flaps from a tissue jacket.

        Bright November

London: The Fortune Press,, [1947]. Poems. Octavo. Original black morocco-grain cloth, titles to spine gilt, edges untrimmed. With the dust jacket. Spine-ends lightly rubbed, cockling to pastedowns and endpapers as often. A very good copy in the tanned and chipped dust jacket separated along the front joint. First edition, first-issue binding. A significant presentation copy of the author's first published book, inscribed by him to "David Williams, sincere good wishes from Kingsley Amis, December 1947" on the front free endpaper, and again at a later date below, "Sounds a bit formal, would you say? Jolly good luck and raucous cheers (in slightly less tidy handwriting) from Kingsley, December 1978". David Williams was Amis's contemporary at St John's College, Oxford, and a member of his close-knit circle of college friends who informally called themselves "The Seven"; Philip Larkin was also a member, and in his biography of Larkin, Andrew Motion wrote that the group, however unserious, "anticipated the principles which were more coherently described by The Movement in the 1950s" (Motion, Philip Larkin: A Writer's Life, p. 69). Williams eventually graduated with a Third degree after his studies were interrupted by a period of service in the Royal Navy. He then became a successful advertising executive, but after suffering a stroke in 1976, turned to writing crime fiction and produced more than twenty "whodunnit" novels, most of which featured Oxford graduate and merchant banker Mark Treasure. He died 2003. Bright November is often encountered in rebound state.

Fortunio roman incroyable.

Autograph letter signed ("NKazantzaki"). Paris, 6. VIII. 1947.

1947. 4to. 2 pp. Addendum: TLS by the author's widow, Eleni Kazantzakis. Geneva, 25 May 1973. Folio. 1 p. Important, pessimistic letter to the Swedish Hellenist Börje Knös (1883-1970), whose visit he anticipates: "Cher monsieur et ami! - On stationery with printed UNESCO letterhead. Kazantzakis was then head of the Unesco's classics translation bureau. All the famous novels and tragedies on which his fame rests were written in exile in Paris. - Includes a TLS by the widow Eleni Kazantzakis, in which she sends he late husband's letter to a Mr. Dubois for a charity auction of the "Association Suisse en Faveur des Enfants Infirmes Moteurs Cérébraux".

        The Unfaithful (Original Film Pressbook)

Warner Brothers, Culver City, CA 1947 - Original Pressbook for the 1947 film noir.A little-seen noir with an interesting history. Based on the 1940 film, "The Letter," which is in turn an adaptation of W. Somerset Maugham's 1926 short story of the same title (first collected in "The Casuarina Tree"). Written for the screen by David Goodis and James Gunn. The film infamously failed to give credit to Maugham's story, though the fact that it was so studiously reworked probably has much to do with the author's lack of interest in making a legal matter of it. Ann Sheridan plays a woman in distress accused of lying about her connection with a murdered man, is eventually acquitted in court. Her character presents a unique picture of the noir female, being neither afraid for her sanity or her life, and yet a victim of postwar instability and infidelity in the context of being a military wife (Silver, et al). 16 pages, saddle stitched, folded once, 11 x 17 inches. Very Good plus, with slight separation at the spine, a few tiny closed tears, and light stressing to the fold.Selby (1984) 452. Silver, pp. 313-314. Spicer, p. 421.

Archive - Estate Documents on Properties Held in Nanking, China - Survey Map Drawn on Silk

China, 1947. China, 1947-1956. Archive of papers pertaining to the estate of Dennis Mullen, Deputy Postal Commissioner of Shanghai, Peking, Jiangxi, Henan, Anhui, Shanxi in the north, and other regions in China, during his forty-two year career as foreign staff, largely dealing with a title dispute over a property in Tung Chi Men near Nanking, attempts to prove rightful ownership, and the complex legalities surrounding the sale of the property and the transfer of funds to England. Documents and letters range in size. Some are in manuscript, some typed, some printed. Several are signed in the original. Occasional creasing, otherwise in very good condition. Maps measure approximately 40 x 29 cm, and are in very good condition. The present archive records an exhaustive process of complexity and confusion, tainted slightly with political corruption and unauthorized representation - not to mention the distraction of China's Civil War which was then underway - as a British judge attempts to claim his inherited property in Nanking and convey funds to England, with still no funds in hand after nine years. The restrictions and politics of Chinese Property Laws, especially in the case of foreigners, is well-illustrated in this, one man's personal archive, which features a manuscript map on silk made by a Chinese surveyor, a detailed land survey map in English, an original will and testament made in Ningpo in 1902, a probate engrossment to the will made in October 1946, the deceased's lengthy record of civil service throughout China. and numerous letters of correspondence disputing and defending the rightful ownership of a land title on the infamous Yantse Bund in Hsia Kwan, Nanking. The letters and reports, maps, and assorted financial notices, record tireless efforts made by Leonard Robert Mullen as he attempted to settle the estate of his father, Dennis Joseph Mullen, generally meeting with obstructive Chinese Property Laws, strict currency export restrictions, and a silent but strong-armed Land Bureau of President Sun Yat-sen's new Communist government. Ownership of two property holdings are for different reasons contested. A property in Tung-Chi-Men, a village situated outside the old treaty port, is not readily attributed to the Mullen estate owing to improper registration which requires untangling. A highly desirable property along the Yantse Bund in Hsia Kwan, Nanking, falls under years of investigation and scrutiny, only to become state property. Accordingly, Mullen's river frontage rights for the latter are further ignored and possibly revoked. [Hsiakwan, or Xiaguan, District was an administrative district within the city of Nanjing]. A report herein states that the Chinese Ministry of Food Storage & Transportation had, in October 1846, constructed go-downs (warehouses) on Mr. Mullen's property, and had occupied the space ever since, suggesting that a lease might have been in place, and revealing why the Ministry would have been the first candidate to purchase the land. The official assessment for the property value was made by the Land Bureau. What makes this especially interesting is the period of change, in terms of land ownership, and the leverage of the newly instated Communist Reform Policy to effect a sale by government terms. It is unknown when Dennis Mullen acquired the two properties, but it seems there were restrictions and complications even at the time of purchase. One of the parcels of land being outside of the treaty boundaries was therefore held in trust by a Chinese agent on his behalf. When his son Leonard Mullen inherited his estate, including the two properties in China, property law rules and restrictions further inhibited foreign ownership, while currency exchange controls made it nearly impossible to see return on land investment if one could even sell. Ultimately, Mullen's land was sold to the Chinese government without his consent, at a reduced market value. Proceeds were converted into bonds and securities through Western banks in Shanghai, in hopes of selling for British currency. The Chinese Communist Revolution in 1949 brought with it a land reform policy which forbade foreigners to purchase land in China. Most land effectively became the property of collectivities or of the state. As at 1956 the export of Mullen's funds was still prohibited, and the bank which held the trust was due to close its doors. As if not complex enough, progress and communications were interrupted by the Chinese Revolution of 1949. Ease of correspondence resumed in 1950, the parties referring to earlier findings and decisions, this time the judge communicating directly, and not through his lawyers. The late Dennis Joseph Mullen (1864-1947), who served 42 years as foreign staff in China is the deceased whose estate is being administered, and whose Nanking land titles are the subject of embroilment. Born in Manchester, he was first employed in Customs Office in China at age 24, holding this post from January 1888 to December 1898, then being assigned to various cities as a postal officer, deputy postmaster, inspector, commander in charge, and Deputy Postal Commissioner, finally retiring in 1929. As well as speaking English and French, he was fluent in Chinese at a young age. In 1892 he received a gold medal by the British Government for "gallantry and humanity" in rendering assistance to the barque Stanfield which was in distress. For "outstanding military and civil achievement", four times during the First World War he was granted the decoration of the Chia ho, also known as the Order of Excellent Crop of the Classes, or Order of the Golden Grain. He died in Nanking, 3 February 1947. His son and sole executor is Leonard Robert Mullen (born in Liverpool, 1908) [sometimes seen as Mullin], who in 1947 was a solicitor and judge of the High Court of Ethiopia, situated in Addis Ababa, previous to that served as Consul in Shanghai. In 1948 he returned to England, settling in Chislehurst, Kent. The archive includes the following: The original signed Will and Testament of the postmaster Dennis J. Mullen which was made in Ningpo in 1902, together with a draft copy. Accompanied by the probate engrossment to the will made in October 1946, naming as sole executor his son Leonard Robert Mullen, at the time a judge of the High Court of Ethiopia. Together with some correspondence and receipts pertaining to the funeral, and to the disposal of personal effects by public auction. Two (2) survey maps of Mullen's land in China. One map, with English text and measurements, delineates the property situated on the Bund in the Hsia Kwan district in Nanking, along the Yangtse River and includes insets showing the district and the whole of Nanking. The other is a manuscript map in Chinese, penned on silk which is oiled to recto for ease of writing, presumably delineating the property in Tung Chi Men, a village on the outskirts of Nanking, which was not in the Treaty Safe zone during the Second World War and where many Japanese made attacked women in the Rape of Nanking not long before. Maps measure approximately 40 x 29 cm. The official Record of Service made by the British Foreign Office in China outlining and all posts held by Dennis J. Mullen during 42 years, having worked in Nanking, Shanghai, Ningpo, Moukden, Hankow, Sianfu, Peking, Kiangsu, Shansi, Honan, and lesser known cities, and achieving the title and role of Deputy Postal Commissioner. A portrait photograph of a Chinese man donning the breast star medallion for Order of the Precious Golden Grain (Order of Chia-Ho) and dressed for a formal affair. Taken at Shanghai Studio, the image measures 13,5 x 22,5 cm, is captioned in Chinese, mounted to a cardstock leaf and contained in a paper folder with tissue guard. Interesting to note, Dennis J. Mullen had also earned the Chia Ho decoration, four times in fact, from classes 6 to 3. As such, it is probable that the man in the photograph was a colleague and close friend to Mullen, and may even be the Mr. Chu mentioned in the documents, who was an agent for Darren Mullen and who held one of Mullen's properties in trust for him. A fascinating news article printed in The Tsingtao Times 2 July 1927 during the 1925-1927 Chinese Revolution, describing a harrowing journey from Cheengdow [Zhengzhou] to Tsingtao [Qindao], during which postal commissioner Darren Mullen and twenty-four others found themselves ambushed and robbed, stranded without rail service due to revolutionary activities. They eventually got to a town and hired on a Chinese junk, which to their utmost dismay was commanded by a pirate working in conjunction with other pirates, finding themselves victims of a devious scheme, attacked, terrorized, shot at, pilfered once more, and finally saved by a warship. Several letters of correspondence pertaining largely to two privately owned Nanking properties, in Tung-Chi-Men and in Hsia-Kwan, respectively, both acquired by a long-time British resident and postal commissioner, and both inherited by his son, British magistrate Leonard Robert Mullen, former consul of Shanghai. Parties involved in solving the matter were the executor Leonard Mullen, his solicitors, various Chinese government agents, and bank staff. One of the letters refers to a meeting with Herman Derek Bryan OBE (1910-2003), who in 1948 was the First Secretary at Nanking, a consular official, diplomat, sinologist, lecturer, writer, translator and editor. Excerpts from the letters: "Shanghai, 6 May 1948.... We received all the documents from the British Consulate-General here and the matter required a considerable amount of investigation... decided it was absolutely necessary to send a representative to Nanking to confer with H.M. Embassy... Mr. Mullen ... wishes to sell the properties and have proceeds remitted to him... Under the law as it at present exists in China, sales of properties are permitted inly for Chinese National Currency and under existing exchange control regulations the purchase of foreign exchange is not permitted except under license from the Central Bank of China and the licence is only granted for certain purposes which do not include remittances for the sale proceeds of real estate... we very much doubt if it would be possible to remit the money to England. Chinese National Currency is still depreciating rapidly... We understand that the Ministry of Food is desirous of acquiring the property... considerably less than the real market value. If however Mr. Mullen refuses to sell to the Ministry they may make it difficult, if not impossible, to sell it to any other person..." "Shanghai, 20 May 1948... Hsia-Kwan property: The application for registration on this property was completed... The old title deed has been surrendered to the Land Bureau in Nanking... now await the issuance of a new title deed in the name of Mr. L.R. Mullen... Tung-Chi-Men Property: ... situated outside the old treaty port area... therefore registered in the name of Mr. Chu Te Ch'eng, who held it as trustee for the late Mr. D. J. Mullen... impossible to proocede with this application. If the old title deed cannot be found... Report: Land at Hsia-Kwan... a portion was surrendered in 1935... another portion was taken away for the widening of the Bund... Area ceded by Garden Hotel Co. M. The actual area depends of the re-survey of the Land Bureau..." "Shanghai, 29 June 1948... Hsia-Kwan property: Mr Chu thinks the Ministry would be prepared to purchase the property at the price of CNC $90,000,000 per fong... equivalent of approximately £7. The area of the land is 312 fong. The main difficulty is that the Ministry insists that the purchase price would have to be paid in Chinese National Currency... the only suggestion we have... upon receipt of the purchase money in Nanking it be remitted to Shanghai immediately and shares purchased in certain companies here which could subsequently be sold in Hong Kong... proceeds could then be remitted from Hong Kong to England... a certain amount of loss... If on the other hand your client refuses to sell to the Ministry, we are afraid that there is a possibility that the Chinese Government might attempt to expropriate the property under the Land Laws of China... the price... CNC $24,000,000 per fong... Tung-Chi-Men Property: ... still not able to locate the title deed... registered in the name of Mr. Chu... After the new title deed has been issued in Mr. Chu's name it could be transferred... into the name of your client." "[Liverpool] 1 October 1948... Hsia-Kwan property: In addition to the land, the deceased held the Grant of the frontage rights... what is being done about these... Prior to the Japanese invasion the land was leased to the China Import and Export Lumber Company... £15 per month... terminated then contract when Japanese took possession... the rental has been lost all these years... Is there not a claim for this rental against the Japanese Government?" "[Chislehurst] 26 October 1948... The Under Secretary of State, Foreign Office... There is some land in Nanking which I anticipate will be sold shortly... The purchase price which will be received for the land is approximately 2.5 billion dollars, and that will be paid in Chinese money, is there any way in which this can be converted into English money?... [signed] LRM" [Telegraph copy] "18 January 1949. Bryan Brodrome Nanking. Chu has completed purported sale Mullens Hsiakwan property to ministry of Food Division Storage and Transportation and has received GY payment. Kindly notify Ministry that we repudiate sale. Please also take all possible steps to preserve Mullens ownership. YIH will endeavour proceed Nanking if considered necessary." "Shanghai. 4 February 1949.... Mr. Chu Teh Ch'eng... formerly the agent of the late Mr. Mullen in Nanking called upon us early in November... informed us that he was willing to negotiate a sale of the property belonging to the estate if we so desired... again on the 10th November... nothing further from Mr. Chu till the 15th January... to our intense surprise he informed us that he had concluded an agreement to sell... Mr. Mullen's property to the Ministry of Food... handed over all the documents of title which were entrusted to him... due to the political situation and the Communist threat to Nanking land values in Nanking had depreciated over 500% since his last visit... 18th January handed us a Sales Agreement... a cheque for Gold Yuan 510,000... Mr. Chu's action was unauthorised. We are also informing the Embassy... Mr. Chu is an old Chinese gentleman, and now frankly admits that he was wrong in selling the property without our authority... he honestly thought he was acting in the best interest of your client... There is the probability... that in the near future there will be a new Government in control of the Nanking area... The census of opinion is that there will be a further deterioration, particularly where foreign interests in China are concerned." "[Liverpool?] 8 August 1950... Because of the war which has been going on in China I did not quite see what I could do about affairs in that country... If you could inform me how best I can communicate with you I will make the necessary arrangements to discharge the indebtedness... " End Excerpts. Chinese property law has taken various forms over the centuries. There were several times of changes in ownership and control over land in China. China's Land Reform (1950-1952) was one of the largest examples of land expropriation in world history. In the process, between 200-240 million acres of arable land were redistributed to approximately 75 million peasant families. During the rule of the Nationalist government (1912-1949), land tenure consisted on the one hand of communal and customary rights vested in landlords and nobles, religious institutions, and village communities, and on the other of statutory land rights grafted on to a German and Japanese civil law tradition. Since the Chinese Communist Revolution in 1949, most land is owned by collectivities or by the state. Today, foreign investors are not allowed to buy land in China. This Order of the Golden Grain (Chia ho) was instituted on 29 July 1912 by President Yuan Shi-kai for outstanding civil or military achievement. It was conferred in nine classes. The First and Second Classes were distinguished by the badge of the order suspended from a yellow sash with white edges plus a breast star. The width of the Second Class sash is narrower and the breast star is smaller in diameter than the First Class sash and breast star. In 1916, a special Second Class was instituted that omitted the sash and sash badge. The Third Class was identified by the badge of the order suspended from a red neck ribbon with white edges. The Fourth through Ninth Class insignia consisted of the badge of the order suspended from different colored breast ribbons as follows: Fourth Class, red with white edges and adorned with a rosette. Fifth Class, red with white edges. Sixth and Seventh Classes, blue with red edges. Eighth Class, white with red edges. Ninth Class, black with white edges. The badge of the order is a star of eight groups of ascending rays in white enamel with a large circular medallion in the center. Each group of rays has three rays edged in silver and each ray has a silver center line. The medallion contains five standing sheaves of grain in green and yellow enamel on a white enamel background. Surrounding the medallion is a narrow turquoise band edged in gilt with small red, yellow, blue, white, and black dots. These are the colors of the flag of the Chinese Republic, which consisted of five horizontal stripes of red, yellow, blue, white, and black. In the center of the reverse of the badge is a circular medallion of the same size as the medallion on the obverse. The reverse medallion contains four Chinese characters in gilt on a red enamel background that translate as "Order of the Golden Grain." The breast star is the badge of the order superimposed over a large star of eight groups of ascending rays in faceted silver. The reverse is plain with a hinged vertical pin flanked by a vertical hook pin. Stamped in a square in the center is "Made by Silver Bureau" in Chinese Characters. The sash, neck, and breast badges are suspended from a device of two adjoining silver cloud symbols. The award?s centerpiece is a stalk of wheat during various stages of growth. A good harvest was indicative of prosperity and civil tranquility during tumultuous times. This order was abolished by the Nationalist Government in 1929 and replaced by the Order of the Brilliant Jade. . Very Good.
