POST WWII CARICATURE - YUGOSLAVIA: [GDE JE HITLER? / WHERE IS HITLER?].

4°, [54] with a printed title page, index, 51 full page illustrations, printed recto, and a blank page, original tan illustrated wrappers (Very Good, slightly age-toned, tiny tears in margins and in the spine). - Beograd: Borba 1946. This is a very unusual collection of caricatures, published one year after WWII in Yugoslavia, by a Belgrade based newspaper Borba (Fight). It includes caricatures of people, politicians, religious figures and nations, showing their reactions after the collapse of Hitler’s regime. The caricatures, accompanied by Serbian text in Cyrillic, were inspired by the Balkan humour. The illustrations were made by three famous Yugoslavian academic artists, who were also active in the underground press during WWII: Milorad Ciric (1912 - 1994) was a Serbian painter and journalist and caricature illustrator at the Belgrade newspaper Borba. Nikolaj Pirnat (1903 - 1948) was a leading Slovenian Partisan artist. He studied sculpture in Zagreb and Paris, and made a living before the war illustrating children’s books. Early in the war Pirnat was arrested by the Italian fascists and imprisoned at the concentration camp at Gonars, Italy, but was released upon the capitulation of Italy in September 1943. Thereafter he joined the Partisans, drafting many of the movement’s most iconic images. Following the war, he became a professor of illustration at the Art Academy of Ljubljana. Vlado Kristl (1923-2004) was a filmmaker and artist, best known for his animations and short films, who won many international awards. During WWII he was active as a poster maker for the Partisans.

THE HARD-BOILED OMNIBUS: EARLY STORIES FROM BLACK MASK

New York: Simon & Schuster, [1946]. First edition. Slight bump to upper right front corners, spine ends a little bumped, a nearly fine copy in a fine dust jacket with a touch of rubbing to corner tips and a small crease at upper right front corner. Perhaps just a hint of fade to the orange background of the spine panel, but ever so slight, a superior example of the jacket and an attractive copy. (15917). Octavo, Cloth. 15 stories first published in Black Mask 1929-36, selected by the former editor. Includes Dashiell Hammett, Raoul Whitfield, Raymond Chandler, Paul Cain, George Harmon Coxe and eleven others.

        The Iceman Cometh. A Play.

New York: Random House, 1946 - Octavo. Original blue cloth, titles to spine gilt on a red ground, top edge red. With the dust jacket. Spine very slightly faded; an excellent copy in the jacket, small chip to head of spine, a little rubbing to extremities. First edition, first printing. Rare presentation copy, inscribed by the author to Shirlee Weingarten on the front free endpaper: "To Shirlee Weingarten / with affection and gratitude / for all she has done since the / first typing job - all the kindness / in the many small things that only / the sensitive do, as the sensitive appreciate. / I have a guilty feeling I have not / been sufficiently appreciative at times, or have even / been downright rude & taking it for granted / you should light cigarettes for playwrights! I hope / I didn't. If I did, it wasn't meant." O'Neill had Parkinsons from 1943, and copies thus inscribed (at such painstaking, if barely legible, length) are consequently rare. The recipient seems from the inscription to have been O'Neill's amanuensis, making this a touching and close association. Atkinson A35-I-1.a. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

        Autograph letter draft.

      N. p., apparently March 1946. - 8vo. 1 p. Written on the reverse side of a portion of a 1946 letter written to Gandhi from a young Western follower, George Mammen. Gandhi's has penned some closely-written notes - clearly a draft for a letter. He writes, in fountain pen ink: "Our India will have need of you. You have had your training. You will give India the benefit of that training. It would be sad only if after the trials and suffering ["of war" struck out] that our soldiers have been through, they forget the lessons of their eyes, the moment the peril is lifted. But one thing you should remember, under remunerations and national Govt, you won't be pampered. You won't have all those lavish privileges which a foreign Govt. bribe you with at the expense of India. India is destitute. You can serve her only by showing her destitution and poverty. Otherwise you will earn not the gratitude but the execration of your country. [Now writing at the top of the page:] You will, I know, fully share in this freedom, only to breathe the air of freedom with your countrymen". - Somewhat wrinkled and dust-soiled; small pinhead-sized holes on top.

XIX, (1), 659, (1) pp. With 357 photo illustrations, 47 maps and text-figures (some folding), and folded full-colour map in back cover pocket. Original giltstamped green cloth. Geographical Handbooks Series (for official use only) B.R. 527 (Restricted). In-depth, profusely illustrated discussion of the Western portion of the Arabian Peninsula, focusing on the Red Sea Coast and Yemen. The book's contents are, "however, by no means confined to matters of purely naval interest.         Solution of Linear Systems of High Order.

[Washington, D.C.]: [n.p.],, 1946. Quarto. Original buff wrappers printed in black, wire-stitched, offset printed typescript. Ownership inscription of R. S. Weinberg to front wrappers. In excellent condition. First edition of this report on computer-oriented numerical analysis, a key document in charting the early development of von Neumann's understanding of the work of Carl Friedrich Gauss. The statistician Harold Hotelling had discredited Gauss's approach to numerical analysis and "advocated using an iterative method to eliminate numerical instability in the solution of large linear systems, a conclusion that von Neumann, Bargmann, and Montgomery supported in the present paper. Von Neumann changed his mind on this a year later ... [He concluded that] he had been overly pessimistic in accepting Harold Hotelling's conjecture that elimination methods such as Gauss's were unsuitable for these types of problems" (Origins of Cyberspace, pp. 477, 479-80). The resulting paper co-authored with Herman H. Goldstine, "Numerical inverting of matrices of high order" (1947), reaffirmed von Neumann's belief in the stability of Gaussian procedure; it is considered to have laid the foundation of modern error analysis. This report was prepared in accordance with Contract NORD-9596 between the Bureau of Ordnance, Navy Department and the Institute for Advanced Study.

Portfolio: An Intercontinental Quarterly Volume III, Spring 1946 (Including the poem "20 Tanks from Kasseldown")

Black Sun Press 1946 - Volume III, Spring 1946. Complete in 31 broadsides (numbered 1-28, with Book reviews, plus "Cover Leaf" and "Foreleaf") in fragile yellow wraps with pockets. One of approximately 1000 copies. Krumhansl 1. Very Good overall. Wraps, as is typical, are in fair shape-- split, foxed, and chipped. Occaisional corner bumping, edge chipping, and slight creasing to broadsides; foxing spot on TOC page. Bukowski broadside lightly foxed with a bit of edge wear. Apart from being a literary magazine composed of beautifully-printed broadsides with Henry Miller as its prose editor, this issue is quite scarce complete, featuring contributions from such 20th Century luminaries as Henry Miller, Sartre, Boyle, Genet, Garcia Lorca, Rexroth, and the first separate publication of Charles Bukowski, preceding his first book, Flower, Fist and Bestial Wail, by 14 years.         All the King's Men

New York: Harcourt, Brace, 1946. First Printing. Hardcover. Near Fine+/Fine-. First Edition (so stated) of perhaps the greatest American political novel and winner of the 1946 Pulitzer prize. 8vo: [6],464pp. Publisher's maroon cloth, spine lettered in gilt, second state pictorial dust jacket, with Sinclair Lewis blurb moved to rear flap and six reviews on back panel). Better than Near Fine (minor spotting to boards and gutters, spine slightly faded, but lettering legible and strong); about Fine price-clipped jacket, unusually vivid, fresh and bright. Overall an excellent example of an important novel. Grimshaw A7.a1. Time 100. Modern Library 100, 36. "More than just a classic political novel, Warren's tale of power and corruption in the Depression-era South is a sustained meditation on the unforeseen consequences of every human act, the vexing connectedness of all people and the possibility-it's not much of one-of goodness in a sinful world. Willie Stark, Warren's lightly disguised version of Huey Long, the onetime Louisiana strongman/governor, begins as a genuine tribune of the people and ends as a murderous populist demagogue. Jack Burden is his press agent, who carries out the boss's orders, first without objection, then in the face of his own increasingly troubled conscience. And the politics? For Warren, that's simply the arena most likely to prove that man is a fallen creature. Which it does." (Time 100) Filmed twice, first with Broderick Crawford as Stark in 1949, and again in 2006 with Sean Penn in the starring role. Note: With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves.         Dangling Man [Signed]

London: John Lehmann, 1946. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine-. First Impression ("First published in England 1946"). Small, slim 8vo: 191,[1]pp. Publisher's finely woven sunflower cloth, spine stamped in brown, in the superb pictorial pictorial dust jacket (price-clipped). Signed by Bellow on front fly leaf. Fine, tight (probably unread) and bright in close to Fine jacket with touch of usual darkening to spine and back panels but front panel still vivid. First book, a slim, quiet masterpiece, from the Nobel prizewinning author of Herzog, Augie March and Henderson the Rain King. Joseph, the novel's protagonist, "is a would-be writer and intellectual caught waiting for the Draft, who romantically believes that intellectual and spiritual enlightenment is to be attained by isolating himself within the confines of a room in a cheap Chicago boarding house while he studies the great writers of the Enlightenment. It also reflects the 1940s preoccupation of American intellectuals with French existentialism and themes of individual freedom, the meaning of moral responsibility, death, and social contract. . . . [In it is] much of Bellow's early life as a young newly-wed intellectual, immersed in literature of all kinds, poor and ambitious, isolated in his in-laws' Ravenswood apartment writing his first novel on a card table in the back room. It is also the lament of a young American artist who does not know how to join the mainstream of Chicagoan or American life without losing the spiritual value of his isolation. Critics hailed Dangling Man as an important novel written with style and genuine mastery." (Literary Encyclopedia) Yet another example of the value to be found in the graphically superior designs of most UK editions of American authors's works. N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed.

The Snow Goose. A Story of Dunkirk.

London Michael Joseph 1946 - Limited edition number 369 of 570 copies signed by author and artist, Peter Scott, slim 4to., four tipped-in colour plates, further monochrome illustrations, head-pieces and vignettes within text, all by Scott, publisher's cloth boards, gilt goose to upper board, top edge gilt and others untrimmed, plain paper dust-jacket, dust-soiled, chipped at extremities and darkened but still doing its job, otherwise and excellent copy. First published in 1940 a short story in a local newspaper, The Snow Goose was then expanded to a novella and republished in 1942. The story is a simple parable on the regenerative power of friendship and love, set against a backdrop of the horror of war. The hunchback, Philip Rhayader lives alone in an abandoned lighthouse on a desolate Essex marsh. One day a beautiful child, Fritha appears with an injured snow goose. The girl is initially wary of Rhayader but he is gentle and kind and Fritha begins to visit regularly. The snow goose recovers and flies home but returns every winter, as does Fritha until 1940 when Rhayader sets sail for Dunkirk to help the soldiers trapped on the beaches. Fritha never sees Rhayader again but the story of the saviour with the snow goose passes from soldier to soldier and into legend. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Portrait photograph of Phillippa Schuyler with her mother Josephine Schuyler

New York, 1946. Profile view of the girl seated at the piano, her mother standing behind with her hand resting on her daughter's shoulder. 1 vols. 25. x 20 cm. (approximately 9-3/4 x 7-3/4 inches). Fine. Docketed in pencil on verso, giving the name of the sitter, and a reference to negative and print ("IX - cc - 3"). Matted. Profile view of the girl seated at the piano, her mother standing behind with her hand resting on her daughter's shoulder. 1 vols. 25. x 20 cm. (approximately 9-3/4 x 7-3/4 inches). Inscribed by her Mom. Phillipa Duke Schuyler, "the baby genius of the Harlem Renaissance," was a musical prodigy who ... By the time she was four years old, ... was a skilled pianist; by five she was performing Mozart before audiences in concert halls. When she was six, she was touring to perform her own compositions; in 1940, at the age of eight, she performed for thousands of visitors at the New York World's Fair. She was ten when she became the youngest member of the National Association of American Composers and Conductors. To satisfy popular interest, magazines and newspapers including the New Yorker, Time Magazine, and the New York Times, included lengthy features outlining her achievements. "Schuyler's parents, too, were well-known figures in the Harlem Renaissance. Her father, George Schuyler, was a prominent and controversial African-American journalist. Her mother, Josephine Cogdell, a white woman, was a painter and writer. Both believed strongly in the theory of hybrid vigor and felt that children produced by interracial unions would inherit the strengths of both races and that ultimately mixed-race Americans would resolve the country's racial tensions. Schuyler's parents dedicated themselves to her success: Josephine Cogdell coached her daughter, pushed her to work hard, and acted as her agent; George Schuyler promoted Philippa Duke Schuyler in his newspaper columns and actively sought recognition for her successes in the white press. In an effort to keep her from becoming self-conscious, Schuyler's parents didn't allow her to see any of the considerable media attention she received. Nevertheless, both parents promoted Schuyler as an interracial role model and as proof of the theory of hybrid vigor. " - EXTRAVAGANT CROWD Incribed by Josephine, Phillips's mother: "to Saul [Saul Mauriber, Van Vechten's assistant], with many good wishes and much gratitude Josephine Schuyler" From the Estate of Saul Mauriber, Van Vechten's assistant, and the editor/compiler of PORTRAITS: THE PHOTOGRAPHY OF CARL VAN VECHTEN (1978); EXTRAVAGANT CROWD: Carl Van Vechten's Portraits of Women (Beinecke Library, Exhibition Catalogue, 2003)
