Collection of seventeen (17) photographs showing John Minihan with friends, fellow photographers like Bill Brandt, Andre Kertesz or with some of the poets he portrayed (like Edna O'Brien or musician Christy Moore); or in Athy as a photographer in action.

. Original b/w photograph on archival paper. Different formats. From the library of irish photographer John Minihan. Most of them titled by John Minihan verso. With John's copyright-stamp verso.. John Minihan is an Irish photographer, born in Dublin in 1946 and raised in Athy, County Kildare. At the age of 12 he was brought to live in London, and went on to become an apprentice photographer with the Daily Mail. At the age of 15 he won the Evening Standard amateur photography competition. At 21 he became the youngest staff photographer for the Evening Standard. For thirty years he remained in London, returning every year to his hometown of Athy to record the people and their daily lives. The work of Minihan in Athy makes up a large part of his canon. Minihan began taking photos in Athy when he was 16. The photos are an attempt to document the lives of the ordinary people of the town in their day to day business and also in times of joy and sadness, notably during the wake of a woman called Katy Tyrrell. In between documenting Athy on visits home, Minihan continued his career on Fleet Street, which included the iconic snap of the 19-year-old Lady Diana Spencer in the garden of the nursery at which she worked, the morning sun to her back, her legs in silhouette through her skirt. Diana had just been announced as the Prince of Wales's love interest and photographers raced to take her photo, Minihan having the fortune to turn up first. Over the years Minihan developed a close relationship with many writers and his photographs of Samuel Beckett show a particular affinity between the two men. Minihans photos of Beckett are some of his best known, one in particular is described as one of the greatest photos of the twentieth century. William S. Burroughs once referred to Minihan as "a painless photographer". Minihan is perhaps best known for his photographs of Samuel Beckett. Minihan first expressed a desire to photograph Beckett in 1969, following Becketts winning of the Nobel Prize for literature, having noticed that all the available photos of Beckett were of a poor quality; 'We were running a story but discovered there were only two very vague images of Beckett taken many years before. It was like he didn't exist - that was the moment I decided I wanted to meet this man and take his photograph.' Minihan first encountered Beckett in London in 1980, while Beckett was working on a production of one of his own plays, Endgame. Minihan met Beckett in the Hyde Park hotel and showed him some of his photos of Athy to break the ice. The two met on a number of occasions over the next few years, but it was not until 1985 that they met in Paris. They arranged to meet in the restaurant of the Hotel PLM, a regular haunt of Beckett. At ten to five, with the light fading, Minihan took the photo that would go on to be called by some as the photograph of the twentieth century. John Calder credited Minihan with capturing, 'the introspective, infinitely sad gaze of a man looking into the abyss of the world's woes'. Among his numerous photographic publications are Photographs: Samuel Beckett (1995); Shadows from the Pale, Portrait of an Irish Town (1996); and An Unweaving of Rainbows, Images of Irish Writers, 1996. He is currently a freelance photographer specialising in 'the arts'. His book of photographs of Samuel Beckett was published in 1995. His photographs of Athy have been exhibited throughout the world. He was given the freedom of Athy in 1990. Minihan currently lives and works in West Cork. Minihan's many exhibitions in museums and galleries around the world include the Museum of Modern Art, Rio de Janeiro, 1984; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris 1986; the National Portrait Gallery, London 1987/8 and the October Gallery, London 1990 as well as the Guinness Hop Store, Dublin 1991.

Lettres Portugaises. Deluxe Edition with Artistic Binding

Paris: Teriade, 1946. MATISSE, Henri, Marianna Alcaforado. Paris: Teriade, 1946. Signed by Matisse. With 15 full-page and 80 smaller lithographs by Matisse. Bounded in a beautiful artistic binding of J.Anthoine Legrain 1949, complete of the matching chemise an box. A copy of Matisse's first collaboration with Teriade. At this time Matisse was also working on Jazz. Unlike the latter work, which was comprised of collages, Lettres Portugaises showcases Matisse's brilliance as a draughtsman. It is distinguished by the use of purple and brown inks, and by "the suavity of Matisse's line" (The Artist and the Book). This is one of only 80 copies accompanied by an extra set of proof studies of the lithographs. The total edition was 270 copies. Mariana Alcoforado (1640-1723) lived in Our Lady of the Conception Convent in Beja. Matisse leads us along the course of the passionate love affair of the nun from Beja, depicting the imaginary portraits of Mariana with delicate and at the same time tormented contours.         Winston S. Churchill Engraved in Mezzotint from the Painting

London: The Times Publishing Company,, 1946. London: The Times Publishing Company,, 1946. Reproduced by The Times with the permission of Lady Birley and the Speaker. House of Commons. Image size: 54.5 × 44 cm. An excellent clean copy. Presented in the contemporary oak and gilt frame. Edition of 325. Signed in pencil below the image by the engraver, Lawrence Josset. Birley was probably the leading portraitist of his day, after his first royal commission in 1928, a portrait of George VI for the National Museum of Wales, he painted "virtually every member of the royal family including Queen Mary and George VI, Queen Elizabeth, Elizabeth II, and Prince Philip." (ODNB) He made four portraits of Churchill, the present one being the first, which was commissioned for the House of Commons. Birley and Churchill became good friends, with the artist encouraging the politician's efforts and accompanying him on painting jaunts to the South of France. The portrait has been worked in colour mezzotint by Lawrence Josset, who, in his obituary by the print-maker Anthony Dyson, was described as "a magnificent anachronism." Josset "like his great 18th- and 19th-century predecessors …made his living as a reproductive mezzotint engraver. He, like his artistic forebears, used this most demanding of techniques to reproduce original paintings with astounding faithfulness; but, while the engravers of earlier times had no alternative, Josset furthered the great tradition of reproductive engraving in an age when the camera had all but eclipsed the craft." The plate for his mezzotint of Annigoni's portrait of the Queen, also published by the Times Publishing Company and hand-printed in colour, was "estimated to be the result of six months' labour, and that the arduous process of inking and printing in colour meant that only two impressions could be made in a day." (The Independent, 27 May, 1995)

        Brave New World

London: Chatto & Windus, 1946. First Modern Library edition of the author's masterpiece. Octavo, original red cloth. Near fine in a very good dust jacket. Signed and dated by the author in 1962 on the title page. Rather uncommon signed. After the success of his first three novels, Huxley abandoned the fictional milieu of literary London and directed his satire toward an imagined future. He admitted that the original idea of Brave New World was to challenge H.G. Wells' Utopian vision… The novel also marks Huxley's increasing disenchantment with the world, which was to result in his leaving England for California in 1937 in search of a more spiritual life. The book was immediately successful" (Parker & Kermode).

Typed Letter Signed with strong political content

London, 1946. unbound. 1 page on personal stationery, 10 x 8 inches, London, December 30, 1946. Signed "G. Bernard Shaw" to his American literary lawyer, opining, with remarkable candor, on U.S. involvement in the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. In part: "...When the Liberals in England during the latter half of the XIXth century found that as a Capitalist Party they not only had no differences with the Conservatives on domestic policy, but were actually less progressive in their program on the education question, they staved off their present collapse and succession by the Socialists as the official Opposition by dropping all English questions and occupying themselves with Bulgarian atrocities and Irish Home Rule. The eyes of a fool are in the ends of the earth. Your letters to Mr. Francis are part of the same policy. The Republican Party, being in the same predicament, is trying to distract political attention from the United States to Palestine by atrocity stories..." Double hole punch on the top edge; several ink corrections and four handwritten words at the end; several folds. Very good(-) condition.

        London The Bastion of Liberty

London.: Chromoworks, Limited.. Ca. 1946.. Color pictographic / pictorial map poster, 38 1/2 x 48 1/2 inches (97 x 123cm), folded (probably as issued). 1/2 inch separations at the intersection of several of the folds, one of which has a 1/2 inch tear leading from that separation; overall in very good clean condition. This attractive pictorial map by artist Kerry Lee dates from the period 1945 to 1948. It is a post World War II celebration of London and the British spirit with Winston Churchill's words in the banner at upper right: "We would rather see London in ruins and ashes than that it should be tamely and abjectly enslaved," with evident reference to the fall of Paris. It was issued in different sizes over the years (this being the largest and the earliest; this printing also has a slightly glossy print quality). The main railway stations are named according to railway company (LNER etc) with additional location name (King's Cross etc) (newer versions of this map name only by location, following the nationalisation of the railway system in 1948). The Festival Hall has not yet been built (so pre 1951), with 'County Hall' being named in its place. The map shows the area of London from Earl's Court Road in the west to The City in the East, and from Regent's Park in the north to Lambeth and Bermondsey in the south. Bordering the map are vignettes of London attractions and important places (Epsom is the lower centre vignette) with coat of arms at the top centre. The map names and depicts important buildings (including all the major department stores along Oxford Street) and is liberally sprinkled with pictographs of historical characters. The publishing line at lower edge reads at left "Published in Great Britain by Chromoworks, Limited." At right: "Copyright in all countries. Published by The Travel Association of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, 6 Arlington Street, London, S.W. 1, England, for the Sole Distributors Messrs Sydney Walton and W. E. Bevan (all enquiries to the Blandford Studios, 71 Blandford Street, London, W.1.)" .

Very good plus in a very good dust jacket.Williwaw was Gore Vidal's first publication, and it earned him the reputation as "the best all-around American man of letters since Edmund Wilson"(Newsweek). The military novel marked the beginning of his writing career, aged twenty-one, and is based upon his Alaskan Harbor Detachment duty. Williwaw is a quasi-autobiographical novel, and its value comprises not merely Vidal's excellent writing but the insight it offers into the author's experiences.

Untitled [The Adventure of the Balloons in Upside Down Land]

      - Untitled collection of nine original watercolors that tell the story of juvenile balloons sold at a carnival and released into the air, where they find their way into "Upside Down Land". N.d., circa 1946, or in the immediate aftermath of World War Two. The order of the pictures telling the story -- there is no text -- is subject to debate, and one can not be certain that these illustrations represent the fully intended story, whether or not it was ever fully realized by the artist and storyteller. In any case, the balloons lose themselves with the manifold temptations of a candy shop. When outdoors, they are attacked by unsavory "balloon" monsters who puncture one of the balloons, who is then administered to by a balloon doctor who patches the hole. The balloons fly off rejoicing, and they dance a circle in the sky, Whether or not a complete suite of illustrations, there can be no denying the cleverness of the basic premise and the charm and skill by which the illustrations were executed. Not only is no published version of this story known, but also, there is no known story in which the concept of an "Upside Down Land" was used. An imaginary land is a commonplace in juvenile fiction, of course, but the ingeniousness of the Upside Down idea created here is that it allows for the illustrations to be viewed with equal appropriateness from top or from the bottom, and indeed, what is the top or bottom of the page is unanswerable, at least in six of the illustrations. The illustrations also capture a mid-twentieth century milieu superbly well. Nothing is known of the artist other than the name signed in one place, which is also not completely clear but appears to be Alberin. The watercolors are not all the same size but are generally about 27 by 20 cm.

CHIAREZZA. Settimanale di vita sociale. [Direttore Salvatore Francesco Romano]. Anno I. 1946, n. 1-49. Annata completa.

Two questionaires submitted to Shaw in the form of letters from the Daily Mail, with annotations by Shaw, 4 pages various sizes, 5 and 20 July 1946.

      - The first letter, on two sides, submits six questions, to only the first of which (whether it is true that he will receive a party of well-wishers from Dublin on his 90th birthday) has Shaw given a response ('Nothing settled yet / GBS / 8/7/46'). The second letter, on a smaller sheet, proposes only four questions, the first again about his birthday celebrations (still nothing settled) and the others eliciting more typical responses:[Is it true that he had discarded the beginning of his latest play?] 'I don't know. I write my plays as they come, quite unplanned'.[How will he keep his mind occupied etc.] 'I am never at a loss for something to do. Have you any notion of the mass of business my works involve. Count them'.[Has he been approached about a film on the life of Dickens?] 'No'.
