        The War Speeches 1940-1945

This is the first collected edition of Churchill's war speeches, published only as a paperback in 1946. The book measures 8.5 x 5.5 inches, bound in pale blue paper wraps with turn-in flaps like a DJ, and with contents printed on cheap pulpy paper. With only one softcover printing, this has proven a scarce and fragile edition - among the most difficult of Churchill's books for collectors to find in respectable condition. Offered here is a very good example.  The covers are bright, clean, and complete, with no losses and retaining beautiful, unfaded blue color even on the spine.  The covers remain firmly attached and the binding square.  Although the spine shows wear along the hinges, there are virtually no losses and all spine lettering remains clear and complete.  We note a few tiny black spots on the front cover, a bit of old tape residue on the rear cover near the upper and lower spine, and minor wear at the edges.  The contents are age-toned, as is unavoidable given the pulp paper, but otherwise clean and tight.  There are no previous ownership marks and light spotting is confined to the page edges.  The front flap is neatly price-clipped.  The book is protected in a removable, archival mylar sleeve.  Bibliographic reference: Cohen A224, Woods/ICS A113, Langworth p.241.

        Cows at Robinhood, Maine II

Robinhood, Me., ca. 1946. Watercolor. 21 x 25 inches. Signed.& Provenance: Estate of the artist. Born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1919, Jason Schoener came from a family of distinguished American artists. He was the nephew of sculptor/painter William Zorach and his wife, painter Marguerite Zorach. Beginning in 1939, Schoener spent his summers at the Zorach family farm in Georgetown, Me., where he studied art with his Uncle William. After service in the Pacific during WWII, Schoener served as an instructor, department chairman, and dean at California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, CA. Schoener's other teaching assignments included Mills College in Oakland, California, and the Athens Technological Institute in Greece. Meanwhile, Schoener continued to use his Georgetown and then Robinhood homes Me. as a summer studio. Over the span of almost two decades, Schoener had several solo exhibitions at the Midtown Gallery on East 57th Street in New York City. His works are in many museum and private collections, including the Oakland Museum and the Whitney Museum in New York. He died in 1997.

        Tomorrow on the March

Los Angeles: The Time-Binder Press, 1946. Stapled quarto sized sheets. (i) (15) pp. First edition. Reprints the text of van Vogt's speech, which he delivered as the guest of honor at the 1946 Pacificon. The speech was delivered on July 4, and presumably published shortly thereafter by E. Everett Evans's Timebinder Press -- a point which has led to the assertion that this is actually van Vogt's first separate publication, as Slan was published late in 1946, according to the Arkham House bibliography. Minute tear to outer front margin, light uniform browning to paper, else an extraordinarily fine copy of a fragile, ephemeral item.

1946. [SKETCH TOUR GENRE] NAKAZAWA Hiromitsu, artist. SAIGOKU SAN-JU^-SAN-SHO JUNREI EMAKI. Kyoto, Kanao Bun'endo^, publisher. Sho^wa 21 [1946]. Oblong folio of o^ban size woodblock prints after designs by Hiromitsu, detailing the famous pilgrimage sites (and sights) in western Japan. The blocks were cut by Okada Seijiro^ and the printers were Nishimura Kumakichi and Takagi Kiyomitsu. This portfolio project was initially completed and printed in 1925. This edition, printed from the same blocks at the very end of Kanao's life, was obviously issued as a companion piece to the THIRTY-SIX VIEWS OF OSAKA, which Kanao also published in 1946. The colors of the original 1925 edition were quite a bit more light and "crumbly" than the bolder colors used in this printing, which accord with that used in the Osaka series. (I personally like this bolder approach to Hiromitsu's work.) There are eleven color woodblock printed preliminary pages, a table of contents page, 37 pilgrimage views, a final portrait of Hiromitsu by an artist friend, and eleven typeset caption pages, explaining the pilgrimage sites, (in Japanese). A lovely and very important series of images, produced by the most important publisher of the "sketchtour" genre. A set in very nice condition, bound into the original printed covers (approx. 25 x 36.7 cm). Complete, in a tied chemise case.

London: Grey Walls Press (1946). 1st edition, full dark gray cloth, with printed dust jacket. Specially inscribed and signed by Patchen in year of publication to his friend, the artist Arthur Sturcke, on the FEP. The inscription reads: "for Arthur / on his birthday: 1946 / with all the respectful & affectionate / good wishes of Miriam & Kenneth" in blue fountain pen ink. Additionally laid in is the back half of an envelope showing Patchen's address in Connecticut. Considering the inscription, and the closeness of their association, this was likely a birthday gift from the Patchens to Sturcke. The text of this collection was selected and introduced by David Gascoyne, and includes a preface by Alex Comfort. There was not a US edition of this title. A lovely association copy between these two artists and friends, in fine condition. Signed copies of this title are very scarce.

President Harry Truman Seeks Support For His Civil Rights Legislation

"Our goal should be the protection and security that can be given all our people under a civil rights program designed to meet the needs of our times."& Harry S. Truman was the first President of the United States in the 20th century to take action on civil rights because of moral imperative. In 1946, he named a President's Committee on Civil Rights, which in late 1947 presented him with a report that was radical for its time. Truman embraced, rather than shyed away from, its contents. Just a few months later, in February 1948, in an election year when his position would surely cost him more votes than he could hope to gain, Truman sent the first Special Message to Congress to deal specifically with civil rights. He wrote Congress that his first goal "is to secure fully our essential human rights. I am now presenting to the Congress my recommendations for legislation to carry us forward toward that goal...We shall not, however, finally achieve the ideals for which this Nation was founded so long as any American suffers discrimination as a result of his race, or religion, or color, or the land of origin of his forefathers...We cannot be satisfied until all our people have equal opportunities for jobs, for homes, for education, for health, and for political expression, and until all our people have equal protection under the law." A Gallup poll indicated that a majority of the American people opposed Truman's civil rights proposals. This was especially so in the South, where opposition arose that resulted in Strom Thurmond running for President as a Dixiecrat, with the aim of taking enough votes from Truman to make the south the swing bloc and be in a position to dictate civil rights policy. Congress balked at passing the measures Truman sought.& On July 26, 1948, after forcing a pro-civil rights platform on a hesitating Democratic National Convention, Truman issued executive orders desegregating the armed forces and ending discrimination in the Federal work force. This was a major victory for civil rights advocates. In the election in November, Truman won but barely avoided finding the Dixiecrats as kingmakers, which would have derailed hopes for civil rights at the time. After his inauguration in 1949, Truman remained dedicated to his civil rights program; but while he could issue executive orders and make discrimination-free appointments (naming the first black Federal judge, William Hastie, that year), he was unable to get Congress to pass civil rights legislation. He began looking for support everywhere he could.& Typed Letter Signed as President, Washington, March 20, 1949, to New York State Supreme Court judge Meier Steinbrink, chairman of the Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rith. That organization had taken a strong civil rights stand and given Truman an award for promoting democracy. "I am sincerely grateful to have been selected as the recipient of the America's Democratic Legacy Award, given annually by your distinguished organization...I am aware of the vigorous educational program and the practical efforts by your organization to foster an understanding of democratic rights and responsibilities. Your definition of America's democratic legacy is admirable. It is indeed a force in the hearts and minds of the people. Our goal should be the protection and security that can be given all our people under a civil rights program designed to meet the needs of our times. Such a program I have placed before Congress...In the effort to have it translated into law, I shall look forward to the support of organizations such as yours."& Truman never did manage to get a civil rights program through Congress, though his Supreme Court appointees began making important rulings finding that the "separate but equal" premise of segregation was a farce and thus chipping away at segregation itself. Shortly before leaving office, Truman's Justice Department filed an amicus brief in Brown vs Board of Education, advocating an end to segregation in schools. A year after he left office, the Supreme Court supported that position by forcing desegregation, in one of the most important cases it ever adjudicated. It would take until 1964 for Congress to act.

Synodo Diocesana, .

      - Leclerq 1946; Medina 1210; Palau 325995-325996; Sabin 11036 (2nd work only). Two beautiful colonial imprints from Lima, Peru, bound together in one volume, containing interesting accounts of two synods held in Santiago, the capital of Chile, in 1688 and 1763. The Synod of 1688 was organized by the Bishop of Santiago, Don Bernardo Carrasco y Saavedra, and that of 1763 by Bishop Dr Don Manuel de Alday y Aspee. The description of the Synod of 1688 was first printed in Lima in 1690. That of 1763 is printed here for the first time and the two works were apparently designed for publication together, though they name different printing offices (they are often found bound together). The accounts give detailed information on both ecclesiastical matters and daily life in colonial Chile, including the text of the constitution outlining the rules of the Catholic Church. The accounts also describe a variety of cultural events such as dances, bullfights and games.
