London: Grey Walls Press (1946). 1st edition, full dark gray cloth, with printed dust jacket. Specially inscribed and signed by Patchen in year of publication to his friend, the artist Arthur Sturcke, on the FEP. The inscription reads: "for Arthur / on his birthday: 1946 / with all the respectful & affectionate / good wishes of Miriam & Kenneth" in blue fountain pen ink. Additionally laid in is the back half of an envelope showing Patchen's address in Connecticut. Considering the inscription, and the closeness of their association, this was likely a birthday gift from the Patchens to Sturcke. The text of this collection was selected and introduced by David Gascoyne, and includes a preface by Alex Comfort. There was not a US edition of this title. A lovely association copy between these two artists and friends, in fine condition. Signed copies of this title are very scarce.

President Harry Truman Seeks Support For His Civil Rights Legislation

"Our goal should be the protection and security that can be given all our people under a civil rights program designed to meet the needs of our times."& Harry S. Truman was the first President of the United States in the 20th century to take action on civil rights because of moral imperative. In 1946, he named a President's Committee on Civil Rights, which in late 1947 presented him with a report that was radical for its time. Truman embraced, rather than shyed away from, its contents. Just a few months later, in February 1948, in an election year when his position would surely cost him more votes than he could hope to gain, Truman sent the first Special Message to Congress to deal specifically with civil rights. He wrote Congress that his first goal "is to secure fully our essential human rights. I am now presenting to the Congress my recommendations for legislation to carry us forward toward that goal...We shall not, however, finally achieve the ideals for which this Nation was founded so long as any American suffers discrimination as a result of his race, or religion, or color, or the land of origin of his forefathers...We cannot be satisfied until all our people have equal opportunities for jobs, for homes, for education, for health, and for political expression, and until all our people have equal protection under the law." A Gallup poll indicated that a majority of the American people opposed Truman's civil rights proposals. This was especially so in the South, where opposition arose that resulted in Strom Thurmond running for President as a Dixiecrat, with the aim of taking enough votes from Truman to make the south the swing bloc and be in a position to dictate civil rights policy. Congress balked at passing the measures Truman sought.& On July 26, 1948, after forcing a pro-civil rights platform on a hesitating Democratic National Convention, Truman issued executive orders desegregating the armed forces and ending discrimination in the Federal work force. This was a major victory for civil rights advocates. In the election in November, Truman won but barely avoided finding the Dixiecrats as kingmakers, which would have derailed hopes for civil rights at the time. After his inauguration in 1949, Truman remained dedicated to his civil rights program; but while he could issue executive orders and make discrimination-free appointments (naming the first black Federal judge, William Hastie, that year), he was unable to get Congress to pass civil rights legislation. He began looking for support everywhere he could.& Typed Letter Signed as President, Washington, March 20, 1949, to New York State Supreme Court judge Meier Steinbrink, chairman of the Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rith. That organization had taken a strong civil rights stand and given Truman an award for promoting democracy. "I am sincerely grateful to have been selected as the recipient of the America's Democratic Legacy Award, given annually by your distinguished organization...I am aware of the vigorous educational program and the practical efforts by your organization to foster an understanding of democratic rights and responsibilities. Your definition of America's democratic legacy is admirable. It is indeed a force in the hearts and minds of the people. Our goal should be the protection and security that can be given all our people under a civil rights program designed to meet the needs of our times. Such a program I have placed before Congress...In the effort to have it translated into law, I shall look forward to the support of organizations such as yours."& Truman never did manage to get a civil rights program through Congress, though his Supreme Court appointees began making important rulings finding that the "separate but equal" premise of segregation was a farce and thus chipping away at segregation itself. Shortly before leaving office, Truman's Justice Department filed an amicus brief in Brown vs Board of Education, advocating an end to segregation in schools. A year after he left office, the Supreme Court supported that position by forcing desegregation, in one of the most important cases it ever adjudicated. It would take until 1964 for Congress to act.

Synodo Diocesana, .

      - Leclerq 1946; Medina 1210; Palau 325995-325996; Sabin 11036 (2nd work only). Two beautiful colonial imprints from Lima, Peru, bound together in one volume, containing interesting accounts of two synods held in Santiago, the capital of Chile, in 1688 and 1763. The Synod of 1688 was organized by the Bishop of Santiago, Don Bernardo Carrasco y Saavedra, and that of 1763 by Bishop Dr Don Manuel de Alday y Aspee. The description of the Synod of 1688 was first printed in Lima in 1690. That of 1763 is printed here for the first time and the two works were apparently designed for publication together, though they name different printing offices (they are often found bound together). The accounts give detailed information on both ecclesiastical matters and daily life in colonial Chile, including the text of the constitution outlining the rules of the Catholic Church. The accounts also describe a variety of cultural events such as dances, bullfights and games.

1946. KELLER, Helen. HELEN KELLER TYPED LETTER, SIGNED, 1946 ON PERSONAL LETTERHEAD. 1 folded 8 1/2 x 11" sheet, Helen Keller's personal stationery, addressed (with original stamped envelope) to a Mr. Bachand of Worcester, Massachusetts, and dated November 30, 1946. The letter, which is an entreaty for financial support for the newly formed Committee on the Deaf-Blind of the American Foundation for the Blind, refers to Mr. Bachand as "dear friend," and is signed in ink in Keller's hand. At the time, Keller had been working for the AFB for twenty years (as she reiterartes in the letter). The letter's eloquent appeal contains descriptions of the experience of being without sight or hearing. Note the following paragraph: "All your pleasure would vanish in a dreadful monotony of silent days. Even work, man's Divine heritage -- work that can bind up broken hearts -- would be lost to you. Family and friends might surround you with love, but consolation alone cannot restore usefulness, or bring release from that hardest prison -- a tomb of the mind and a dungeon of the body." The letter is creased but not terribly so. A small two-color brochure (not in Braille) soliciting funds is included, with the Board of Trustees of the Committee printed on the back.

New York: Modern Library, (1946). Hardcover. Very Good in a Very Good dustwrapper. Reprint of this popular collection which features Frost's essay on poetry, "The Constant Symbol," as an introduction. This copy has been SIGNED by the author and INSCRIBED to minor poet and folklorist Addison Barker with the complete eight-line poem "The Pasture," the first poem in the book, in the poet's hand on the page opposite the title page. The recipient's signature is on the front endpaper above a pasted newspaper photograph of Frost, and Barker has noted on the title page the date Frost wrote the poem in the book: 25 January 1950. Barker has an interesting connection to Frost in that in 1951 he published the discovery of the very first appearance in print (BLUM'S FARMER'S AND PLANTER'S ALMANAC FOR 1850) of the proverb "Good fences make good neighbors." Barker tried to find an earlier, New England appearance before publication in the North Carolina almanac but was unsuccessful. There were previous variants on the proverb, but none exactly as Frost used it. Even without this academic aside to an entirely different poem, "The Pasture" is one of Frost's best known poems and not commonly encountered, complete, in manuscript form.

1946. 2. WORLD WAR II. HET BEEST IS DOOD! [THE BEAST IS DEAD] [by] Victor Dancette. Arnhem & Brussel: S. Gouda Quint / D. Brouwer En Zoon 1946. Folio (10 3/4 x 14 1/2"), 2 volumes in 1, cloth backed pictorial boards, some edge and corner wear, VG+. First edition in Dutch (two volumes in one) having been published in France La Bete Est Morte. Published to celebrate the end of the Nazi occupation of France, these two volumes (the first subtitled "Het Beest is Losgebroken [The Beast is Loose] and Het Beest is Verslagen [The Beast is Defeated] are boldly and quite fantastically illustrated in full color on every page by CALVO in almost a Disney-like style. The history of the French in World War II is presented in allegorical form through a world of humanized animals. Hitler and the Nazi's are portrayed as wolves with devil ears, the French are Rabbits, Russians are polar bears, British are "Churchill-esque" bulldogs and the Americans are bison. Charles de Gaulle and the free French are elegant swans, Nazi Propaganda Minister Josef Goebbels is a weasel and Luftwaffe Commander Herman Goering is a fat pig. There is much action and detail and it is quite amazing.

Auto-Da-Fe [Signed] [The Tower of Babel; Die Blendung]

London: Jonathan Cape, 1946. First edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/very good +. A Near Fine copy of the First UK edition, first printing (light wear, minor spotting to the rear board, a touch of light spotting to the topstain and to the other edges of the closed page block), in a Very Good dust jacket (showing some of the common browning to the front and rear panels, some linear indentations to the front panel, some browning and light scuffing with closed tears to the spine -- a difficult dust jacket to find in any better condition), SIGNED BY ELIAS CANETTI on the front free endpaper as follows: "from Elias Canetti". First published as Die Blendung ("The Blinding") in 1935 and later banned in Nazi Germany, the book was translated to English in 1946 by C. V. Wedgwood then published in the UK as "Auto-Da-Fe" (Cape, 1946) and in the US as "The Tower of Babel" (Knopf, 1947). As Canetti did not become widely-known until his "Crowds and Power" was published in 1960, both the Cape and the Knopf first editions are rather scarce. (Canetti intended the novel to be the first installment in a eight-volume series. As he did not write the rest of the planned installments, "Auto-Da-Fe" is not only his debut novel, but also is the only novel he ever published. Both "Crowds and Power", a work of nonfiction, and "Auto-Da-Fe" explore how an individual is affected by his or her participation in a group.) Canetti won the 1981 Nobel Prize in Literature "for writings marked by a broad outlook, a wealth of ideas and artistic power", and "Auto-Da-Fe" is, in our estimation, his best-known work. Of this novel, Salman Rushdie stated: " one is spared. Professor and furniture salesman, doctor, housekeeper, and thief all get it in the neck. The remorseless quality of the comedy builds one of the most terrifying literary worlds of the century". Signed copies of Canetti's books are scarce, signed copies of any English translation of his books are scarcer still, and signed copies of any English translation of this title, the work for which he is best known, are extraordinarily so. Altogether a Very Good + or slightly better copy of an uncommon book, difficult to find in nice condition, and SIGNED BY ELIAS CANETTI. RARE INDEED.

        Little Fur Family

NY: Harper & Brothers, 1946. First edition. Hardcover. Near fine. Garth WIlliams. First edition. 16mo., approximately 2.5 by 4 inches, not including the fur; the box is about 3½ by 5 inches. A charming small book in pictorial boards with color illustrations throughout by Garth Williams. The book has its original real fur slipcover, and is housed in its original pictorial box. The box has a circular opening to show the fur on the book. There is slight discoloration of the endpapers due to contact with the fur, else in fine condition. The pictorial paper cover on the box has a slight overlap on one side of the cardboard hole, suggesting that the hole in the paper and the hole in the box were cut in two separate operations. The box is near fine, and not often seen in such nice condition.
