This song was recorded by Woody for his publisher using a portable reel-to-reel recorder. It was never published commercially. Billy Bragg and Wilco recorded it for a cover album. After the lyrics, Woody writes, "I told Marjorie this night that the reason why I wrote this old song up with these new words was to show a kind of change that these old songs are always going through . . . New models of old clothes and cars come out every little while. Make it this way when you sing your songs. Make them up and shake them up. And don't ever pass up a chance to snap at a biscuit."

Abeceda Duseviho Prazdna (Alphabet of Spiritual Emptiness)

Prague: Nakadatelsvi Za\' Druha a.s, 1946. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Soft cover. Near Fine/Very Good. This is a scarce first edition, first printing of the critically acclaimed photobook, Abeceda Duseviho Prazdna (Alphabet of Spiritual Emptiness) published by Nak/adatelsvi Za\' Druha a.s., Prague, in 1946. Abeceda is a documentary record of forced German labor camps in Breslau during 1941-1943 that Vince Aletti in the photobook reference work, The Book of 101 Books: Seminal Photographic Books of the Twentieth Century, calls a Czech artist\'s response to the physical and psychic devastation of World War ll. He also writes, The subject of his book is the walking wounded - men forced to work for the conquering army. The dark, impressionistic look of Tmej\'s photographs is the result of working indoors with a concealed camera and only the dimmest of available light. The book itself, a small paperback made with pulpy newsprint stock, has an abject quality contradicted only by the gorgeously tactile gravure prints. Published a year after Germany\\\'s collapse and their author\'s release, Tmej\'s photos retained their aura of furtiveness and despair at the same time as they were transformed into documents of resistance and survival. An exceptional account of the book appears on the 5B4 website, Unmarried Czech workers will be used as a group in the most remote parts of the Reich and will thereby be prevented from starting families in the territory of the protectorate. This was the decree under which, in the autumn of 1942, Zdenek Tmej was ordered to the town of Breslau to serve in a forced labor camp. Tmej, a 22-year-old aspiring photographer, brought along a Contax and a Rolliflex camera intending to bear witness to the conditions and events that transpired in a Nazi-run forced labor camp and somehow he would was allowed to keep his cameras and photograph. His job in the Reich was to work at the train station unloading the mail trains and he even took this as an opportunity to order an enlarger and darkroom equipment as well as a 4 x 5 camera to be sent from Prague. He sold prints to keep himself in film flashbulbs and photographic paper. The resulting photographs and eventual book published in 1946 called Abeceda Dusevniho Prazdna - Alphabet of Spiritual Emptiness, serve as an unrivaled insider\'s account of what it was like to live under the conditions of a Nazi forced labor camp. Measuring approximately 9.5 inches x 8.5 inches and containing 45 stunning gravure prints, the book is bound in cardboard type flexible paper wraps with a photographically illustrated dust jacket. The condition of the book is Near FINE+ with some very minor wear and soiling to the fragile covers and a few random marks to the page edges. The original dust jacket is in Very Good+ condition with some foxing to the rear and inside of the dust jacket. The edges of the dust jacket have been professionally restored. Overall, this is an exceptionally well preserved copy of an extremely scarce photobook that is notoriously fragile and almost impossible to find in this condition. Cited in all three reference works on photobooks: The Book of 101 Books: Seminal Photographic Books of the Twentieth Century and The Open Book by Andrew Roth and Parr and Badgers, The Photobook: A History.

Untitled [The Adventure of the Balloons in Upside Down Land]

. NA. Fine. Untitled collection of nine original watercolors that tell the story of juvenile balloons sold at a carnival and released into the air, where they find their way into "Upside Down Land". N.d., circa 1946, or in the immediate aftermath of World War Two. The order of the pictures telling the story -- there is no text -- is subject to debate, and one can not be certain that these illustrations represent the fully intended story, whether or not it was ever fully realized by the artist and storyteller. In any case, the balloons lose themselves with the manifold temptations of a candy shop. When outdoors, they are attacked by unsavory "balloon" monsters who puncture one of the balloons, who is then administered to by a balloon doctor who patches the hole. The balloons fly off rejoicing, and they dance a circle in the sky, Whether or not a complete suite of illustrations, there can be no denying the cleverness of the basic premise and the charm and skill by which the illustrations were executed. Not only is no published version of this story known, but also, there is no known story in which the concept of an "Upside Down Land" was used. An imaginary land is a commonplace in juvenile fiction, of course, but the ingeniousness of the Upside Down idea created here is that it allows for the illustrations to be viewed with equal appropriateness from top or from the bottom, and indeed, what is the top or bottom of the page is unanswerable, at least in six of the illustrations. The illustrations also capture a mid-twentieth century milieu superbly well. Nothing is known of the artist other than the name signed in one place, which is also not completely clear but appears to be Alberin. The watercolors are not all the same size but are generally about 27 by 20 cm.

        GILDA (1946)

USA 1946 - Vintage original 12 ¼ x 18 ¼" (31 x 46 cm.) campaign book, 32 pp. plus 16-page advertising section, USA. Rita Hayworth, Glenn Ford, George Macready, Joseph Calleia, dir: Charles Vidor; Columbia. One of the quintessential film noir titles, with star Rita Hayworth becoming film history's iconic "femme fatale". The cover and back of the book features one of the most famous publicity shots of all time, utilized fully and in part for scores of publicity campaigns for the film and the star. Hayworth is featured in what is likely her most famous costume -- a gown designed by Jean Louis. In the film she performs the musical number "Put the Blame on Mame" while wearing this gown. To this day Hayworth's performance is most appealing not only because of her sex appeal, but because of her pathos and vulnerability. The campaign book is lavish as Columbia was keen on promoting their most popular female star. It opens up to a gatefold featuring various stills of Hayworth in the famous costume and an array of movie magazine covers, articles and ads she appeared in to promote the film. Featured is a parade of gowns inspired by the Jean Louis fashions, radio promos, lobby displays including special cut out pieces, records, sheet music, articles -- including one on the screen's "meanies" (actresses who made good playing bad characters), promos and posters. There is also the separate 16-page advertising booklet. No cuts, folded (as issued), there is some wear to left border, NEAR FINE.

''I Bequeath''..."I, Forrest J. Ackerman, being of imaginative mind, bequeath to the Fantasy Foundation, upon my demise, my 1300 fantasy books (4 July 46). Hand Annotated by Ackerman with Additions

Hollywood, CA: Published for the Author, 1946 Hollywood, CA: [published for the author], [July 4, 1946]. See scans. First Edition. Hand Annotated by Ackerman with Additions. 23 leaves, including front cover, with single-spaced text mimeographed on recto side only. (4to) 11x8½, original printed tan paper staple-bound wrappers. One of 500 copies, mimeographed by C. Everett Evans, plus additional pencil notations and check marks throughout; these add a number of titles. These insertions have undergone forensic handwriting examination and have been authenticated as having been the hand of Ackerman. Forrest J. Ackerman, a significant American Sci-Fi editor, author, and collector, a reader of the SF magazines from their inception, has been an active member of SF FANDOM from his early teenage years, and “as early as 1932 served as associate editor of The Time Traveller, the first FANZINE. For many decades thereafter he wrote stories and articles prolifically for fan journals - using his own name and a wide variety of elaborate pseudonyms, including Dr Acula, Jacques DeForest Erman, Alden Lorraine, Vespertina Torgosi, Hubert George Wells (cheekily), Weaver Wright and many others and becoming known in fan circles as Mr. Science Fiction; he won several awards for these activities, including a Hugo Award in 1953 for Number One Fan Personality. His first story was A Trip to Mars in 1929 for the San Francisco Chronicle, which won a prize for the best tale by a teenager; some of his more interesting work was assembled in Science Fiction Worlds of Forrest J. Ackerman and Friends (1969). He collected SF books and memorabilia from the very first, publishing in I Bequeath (to the Fantasy Foundation) a bibliography of the first 1300 items, and eventually housing his 300,000-item library, which he called the Fantasy Foundation, in a 17-room house in Hollywood, the maintenance of which proved difficult to manage over the years. The library was further celebrated in Souvenir Book of Mr. Science Fiction's Fantasy Museum (1978). Disposals of collectible books have been made at times; and part of the library was auctioned in 1987, grossing over $550.000. Notorious for his punning and use of simplified words, [Ackerman] is credited with introducing the term SCI FI in 1954. He was [an] agent for a number of writers, notably A.E. van Vogt. Contains many books not found in the major Sci-Fi references, including: Bleiler, Locke, Reginald, Owings & Chalker, 333 or in Day. Rare. See scans. Lg7

Amsterdam, Meulenhoff, 1946. Ingenaaid. 88 p. 1e druk. JS 8.

[An archive of scripts for an unproduced film version of:] TESS OF THE D'URBERVILLES

[Culver City]: Vanguard Films, Inc. / The Selznick Studio, 16 March 1946 through [ca. 1948].. [Culver City]: Vanguard Films, Inc. / The Selznick Studio, 16 March 1946 through [ca. 1948].. Six volumes. Quarto. Mimeographed and mechanically reproduced typescripts, printed on rectos only. Bradbound in wrappers (stencil-printed, printed, and unprinted). Other than noted below, very good. An interesting lot of development scripts undertaken for a film version of Hardy's novel which never came to fruition, made up of the following: a) Gow, Ronald, " Tess of the D'Urbervilles A Play ... Based on Thomas Hardy's Novel," an undated playscript in term binder (overlap edges chipped), foliated in act/scene format; b) A "First Treatment" by Allan Scott, [1],96 leaves, 14 Feb. 1946 (rerun 16 April 1946); c) A "Complete Script" of Scott's full screenplay, [1],244 leaves, 12 July 1946 (somewhat worn, upper wrapper and first leaf detached from brads); d) another "Complete Script" draft as above, re- run 12 January 1947; e) an undated but revised draft of Scott's screenplay, [1],253 leaves, in canary yellow printed Selznick Studio wrappers; and f) a different screenplay, credited to Clemence Dane, undated, [1],216 leaves. Gow's play was quite successfully produced in 1946, but seems not to have been published at the time. Selznick's writers may have consulted it in the process of their adaptations. Had it come to fruition, this would have been the third film version of TESS, after the now lost silent versions of 1913 and 1924. As it turned out, a third version would need to wait until the award-winning 1979/80 Polanski version, TESS.

MEXICO SOUTH: The Isthmus of Tehuantepec

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1946. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1946. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Inscribed by Author(s). First Edition. Eight color plates of relief halftone illustrations from paintings by Miguel Covarrubias, including the folding map of Tehuantepec, with 92 line drawings, and 96 pp. of photographs by Rosa Covarrubias and others. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1946. First edition. After emigrating to the United States in 1923 from his native Mexico, and becoming a celebrated "Smart Set" artist, book illustrator, and caricaturist for Vanity Fair Magazine, Covarrubias’ interest increasingly turned to ethnography, which he pursued in North Africa, Bali, and throughout the Americas. This brilliant study of the life, art, and customs of the indigenous Zapotec people of Tehuantepec, the narrow neck of Mexico that separates the Pacific Ocean from the Gulf of Mexico, coincided with some of the earliest archaeological findings of the ancient Olmec culture by American archaeologist Matthew Stirling (1890-1975). Actively involved with the Olmec excavations during the course of writing this book, Covarrubias immersed himself in the study of Olmec sculpture and artifacts, and concluded that the Olmec culture preceded the Aztec and Mayan, a controversial theory that subsequent discoveries have validated. Octavo. Inscribed by Covarrubias on the front flyleaf to ballerina and actress Tamara Geva and her husband actor John Emery "with fondest regards from Rosa and Miguel Covarrubias, Mexico, March 3, 1947." Covarrubias has added marvelous caricatures of both himself and his wife Rosa to the inscription. Original chartreuse cloth over black cloth binding, with decorative gilt and black stamping. Front hinge strengthened. Boards sunned and unevenly faded. Edges somewhat worn and showing at the corners. The dust jacket is rubbed and shelfworn, with some foxing to the rear panel; otherwise very good..

Striking original photograph by the highly distinguished Armenian-born Canadian photographer Yousuf Karsh (1908-2002) depicting Weill seated at his desk, pencil in hand, with a score of Street Scene, considered to be Weill's "official portrait"

[ca. 1946]. 252 x 203 mm. With "Kurt Weill The Playwrights' Co. Photo by Karsh late 1940's" in pencil to verso along with other annotations. Very slightly worn; corners slightly creased; small stain to blank lower margin not affecting image. . Weill, born in Dessau, Germany, became an American citizen in 1943. "He was one of the outstanding composers in the generation that came to maturity after World War I, and a key figure in the development of modern forms of musical theatre. His successful and innovatory work for Broadway during the 1940s was a development in more popular terms of the exploratory stage works that had made him the foremost avant-garde theatre composer of the Weimar Republic...". David Drew and J. Bradford Robinson in Grove online "By far the most widely reproduced of all Weill photographs, it shows him seated at his Brook House desk, immaculately dressed and freshly coiffured, with chin thrust forward as in no other photograph, and pen poised over a page that could almost be a balance-sheet but reveals itself, in the better reproductions, as a page from the rehearsal score of Street Scene. There is no remotely comparable picture, and yet it is impossible to imagine one better suited to the purposes of documenting the 'image and understanding' of 'Weill in America' that has been so vigorously promoted by Brecht scholars in recent years - the image, that is, of one who was at home on Broadway but would have been equally so in the boardrooms of Wall Street or Madison Avenue... The imposture becomes 'genuine' through Weill's endorsement of its impersonal conformity in preference to the introspective and enigmatic figure portrayed not only by Hoyningen-Huene but also, with uncharacteristic insight, by Karsh himself in a second, and quite unknown, portrait taken at the same session in Brook House." David Drew: Kurt Weill, pp. 44-45. Street Scene, an opera in two acts by Kurt Weill to a libretto by Elmer Rice after his own play, with lyrics by Langston Hughes and Rice, premiered in Philadelphia at the Shubert Theatre on December 16, 1946. The work opened in New York at the Adelphi Theatre on January 9, 1947 and ran for 148 performances through May 17, 1947. The present photograph was presumably used in association with the New York premiere. "Weill considered Street Scene his chef d’oeuvre... [His] musical concern was less with originality than with authenticity. The cloying sentimentality is a function of the drama. It also demonstrates how Weill adjusted his musical voice as the drama demanded. Street Scene contains European elements, including allusions to Puccini, even to Wagner. The drama demanded them, too. The description ‘American opera’ nonetheless applies: it is an opera for America – that is, for a Broadway public; and it is an opera about America, both musically and in terms of plot."
