        Williwaw.

Dutton, New York 1946 - First edition of the author's first book. Octavo, original black cloth. Signed by the author on the half title page. Very good plus in a very good dust jacket. Williwaw was Gore Vidal's first publication, and it earned him the reputation as "the best all-around American man of letters since Edmund Wilson"(Newsweek). The military novel marked the beginning of his writing career, aged twenty-one, and is based upon his Alaskan Harbor Detachment duty. Williwaw is a quasi-autobiographical novel, and its value comprises not merely Vidal's excellent writing but the insight it offers into the author's experiences.         FORTH, BEAST! Signed

London: Faber & Faber Ltd,, 1946 Crowley's Personal Copy. Sm. 8vo., 200pp. A very good copy showing light use. First Edition. Pale blue boards, gilt titled at the spine [mildly faded, the gilt still bright]. Louis Marlow, [Crowley's Literary Executor] satirist, whose criticism of life cuts deep. "This is a book with ingredients both sweet and astringent, written by a man who has thought deeply, acted independently, reflected sagely, and is able to set down in bold, lucid, vivid paragraphs a life-time of rich and impassioned experience." & according to the author, the essays in this book have something to offend everyone. Presentation copy with a lengthy inscription by the author on the half title: "For / Aleister Crowley - With apologies for / the very imperfect / sketch of him / herein attempted. / From / Louis Marlow / And now in April 1946. Deirdre MacAlpine / April 1948". Also - Boldly signed by Crowley on the front pastedown with his phallic signature form, adding four lines of original poetry - "On Louis the immortals / sardonically look / he sought fame as a poet / and found it as a cook!". Penciled notes on the ffe: " Lidoll [sic] Hart / The Revolution in Warfare", & on the verso of the half title: "I want to ask Joad what's his answer to the very serious attack on his integrity on page 98 of this book" Some AC marginalia - one or two author's holographic corrections. With: a very good 2 page als on Crowley's personal stationery with his red 666 seal at the top. Dated September 25, Netherwood, The Ridge, Hastings. "Dear Louis / Peccavi / Mea Maxima Culpa / I ought to be kicked 77 times around circular Route No 2. Ungrateful swine that I am; a hog, a viper.         Four page letter signed "Sailor" to fellow Battle of Britain Spitfire ace Alan Deere.

Plymouth, H.M.T. Carnarvon Castle, 25 February, 1946 - Written on both sides of 2 sheets (202 × 164 mm) of note-paper embossed with the Royal Arms. Holes from stapling to the top left-hand corner, creases from old folds, but overall very good. Signed or autograph material by Malan is extremely uncommon, this substantial letter also boasts excellent content and Battle of Britain associations. Born in Cape Province in 1910, Malan joined the RAF in 1935, having previously served in the merchant marine with the Union-Castle Line, the origin of his sobriquet. He joined 74 Squadron in January 1936 and remained with them, rising to Squadron Leader, until March 1941 when he became Wing Leader of the Biggin Hill Wing. In his active fighter career through the height of the Battle of Britain he claimed 27 kills destroyed, 7 shared destroyed and 2 unconfirmed, 3 probables and 16 damaged, making him at the time the RAF's highest scoring Ace and one of the highest scoring pilots to have served wholly with Fighter Command during WW2. Here he writes to Alan Deere, a fellow Spitfire pilot who served in the Battle of France and the Battle of Britain, accumulating 22 kills, and who was a Wing Commander at Biggin Hill at the time when Malan had become Station Commander. "Well, we have had a long and a happy association together which I shall never forget, and I do hope we shall meet again some day." Malan apologises for not having seen Deere before his departure - "I was in a constant rush right up to the end and couldn't spare either the petrol or the time to see you on the last Saturday night when you were in Town." - hopes that he has mended his breach with fellow New Zealand Ace Bill Compton - "his besetting sin is selfish thoughtlessness at times" - congratulates him on his receiving an OBE and his acceptance of a permanent commission - "the service could do with as many of your type as they can lay hands on" - and extends his best wishes for the birth of his first child - "I can picture you strutting about with pride when your infant arrives." Malan himself feels that he could not have faced peace-time service and "Even had I not got myself fixed up as well as I have, I flatter myself that I could have improved my position and circumstances in several other walks What an Ego!" He had been invited by Harry Oppenheimer to become his private and political secretary at the Anglo-American Corporation, which address he gives for future mail. However, it was in the strained political world of post-War South Africa that he really made his mark. Having joined the servicemen's anti-apartheid organizations the Springbok Legion and War Veterans Action Committee on his return to the country, he was chosen to be president of the Torch Commando, which was founded to oppose the disenfranchisement of the Cape Coloured population. At its height membership reached 250,000, with Malan addressing rallies of up to 75,000, drawing draconian measures amounting to proscription from the National Party government. Malan died of Parkinson's Disease in 1963. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

THE D. A. BREAKS A SEAL (First Edition, Warmly Inscribed)

New York: William Morrow, 1946. Gardner, Erle Stanley. THE D. A. BREAKS A SEAL. New York: William Morrow, (1946). First Edition. A NEAR FINE copy (few little spots to the topstain, a couple of which just touch one corner of the back flap) in an attractive VERY GOOD PLUS (Priced $2.50) ORIGINAL DUST JACKET (lightly used, a few tiny chips). WARMLY INSCRIBED on the front-free endpaper:"To Tee Rose/ whose friendship has been a steady heartwarming thing over a whole flock of years. Lots of love from Uncle Erle and congratulations on the way you have developed your writing ability. From a guy who knew you when. Yours, Erle." Underneath this, the author has signed his name in full: "Erle Stanley Gardner/March 1946." Tee Rose, a young writer from San Francisco, was a lifelong friend of ESG and she always received Gardner's latest book in the mail -- usually immediately upon publication. We have in stock quite a few of his presentation copies to her dating from 1934 to the early 1960s. THE D. A. BREAKS A SEAL is the seventh of nine novels written by Gardner about small town California district attorney Doug Selby. In our experience, the Doug Selby mysteries are far more rarely seen signed than the Perry Mason mysteries.. Signed by Author. First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Very Good Plus. Illus. by Charles Lofgren.

An Important Collection of 19 Photograph Albums of Original Photographs recording life in post World War II Indonesia. Ca. 1946.

      - 19 volumes (5 4/8 x 8 inches), each with ca 20 black and white images interleaved with brief typed descriptions, photograph size (5 4/8 x 7 inches). Original half black cloth, marbled boards, printed paper labels on each front cover (a bit browned). "Very little can as yet be said of the future political developments of this part of the archipelago" (anonymous photographer's note). An important and fascinating collection of photographs of post-war Indonesia apparently prepared by the Dutch government or a Dutch humanitarian organization just following the end of World War II. Between 1945 and 1949 Dutch troops fought local republican factions to regain control of Indonesia after the end of Japanese occupation. Photographs include dramatic and often disturbing images of the devastation caused by the war, particularly the Japanese occupation of Sumatra: "Southern Sumatra was the scene of many tragedies. on the capitulation of the Japanese forces many P.O.W. internment camps were discovered where P.O.W.'s lived on the verge of death." (anonymous photographer). There are photographs recording the official hand-over of power: "Conference between commander of British occuptation forces brigadier Hutchinson, colonel Mollinger, who with Dutch troops was to take over command from the former and Dr. Iza republican resident of Palambang and substitute for Dr. Gani minister of the republican government. the official taking over of command. the landing of Dutch troops" (ibid.) However, the focus of the albums seems to be the recovery of industry and agriculture in the Indonesian islands and the opportunity for economic development. Album titles include: Northern and Western Sumatra; Eastern Sumatra; Southern Sumatra; Bangka & Billiton; Western Borneo; Southern Borneo; Eastern Borneo; Western Java; Central Java; Eastern Java; Celebes; Bali; Eastern Indonesia; Types, Arts & Habits; People of Importance; Rice. Jahrhundert.         I Bequeath''."I, Forrest J. Ackerman, being of imaginative mind, bequeath to the Fantasy Foundation, upon my demise, my 1300 fantasy books (4 July 46). Hand Annotated by Ackerman with Additions.

Published for the Author, Hollywood, CA 1946 - Hollywood, CA: [published for the author], [July 4, 1946]. See scans. First Edition. Hand Annotated by Ackerman with Additions. 23 leaves, including front cover, with single-spaced text mimeographed on recto side only. (4to) 11x8½, original printed tan paper staple-bound wrappers. One of 500 copies, mimeographed by C. Everett Evans, plus additional pencil notations and check marks throughout; these add a number of titles. These insertions have undergone forensic handwriting examination and have been authenticated as having been the hand of Ackerman. Forrest J. Ackerman, a significant American Sci-Fi editor, author, and collector, a reader of the SF magazines from their inception, has been an active member of SF FANDOM from his early teenage years, and ¿as early as 1932 served as associate editor of The Time Traveller, the first FANZINE. For many decades thereafter he wrote stories and articles prolifically for fan journals - using his own name and a wide variety of elaborate pseudonyms, including Dr Acula, Jacques DeForest Erman, Alden Lorraine, Vespertina Torgosi, Hubert George Wells (cheekily), Weaver Wright and many others and becoming known in fan circles as Mr. Science Fiction; he won several awards for these activities, including a Hugo Award in 1953 for Number One Fan Personality. His first story was A Trip to Mars in 1929 for the San Francisco Chronicle, which won a prize for the best tale by a teenager; some of his more interesting work was assembled in Science Fiction Worlds of Forrest J. Ackerman and Friends (1969). He collected SF books and memorabilia from the very first, publishing in I Bequeath (to the Fantasy Foundation) a bibliography of the first 1300 items, and eventually housing his 300,000-item library, which he called the Fantasy Foundation, in a 17-room house in Hollywood, the maintenance of which proved difficult to manage over the years. The library was further celebrated in Souvenir Book of Mr. Science Fiction's Fantasy Museum (1978). Disposals of collectible books have been made at times; and part of the library was auctioned in 1987, grossing over $550.000. Notorious for his punning and use of simplified words, [Ackerman] is credited with introducing the term SCI FI in 1954. He was [an] agent for a number of writers, notably A.E. van Vogt. Contains many books not found in the major Sci-Fi references, including: Bleiler, Locke, Reginald, Owings & Chalker, 333 or in Day. Rare. See scans. Lg7 [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

One Man in His Time [FIRST EDITION PUBLISHED 1946]

Pendulum Publications Limited, U.K. 1946 - 158 pages, size 7.25 inches tall by 4.75 inches. Now famed for his 'pulp fiction', Stephen Daniel Frances, launched Pendulum Publication as WWII was ending. Pendulum then published this, his first novel, semi-autobiographical it did not sell well. For some reason his name is spelt 'Francis' on the front board but correctly 'Francis' on the title page. With the failure of this to sell and two other novels unpublished Francis took advice and changed genre. American 'hard-boiled' crime fiction was selling well and Francis wrote and sold 'When Dames Get Tough' in 1946, using the pen-name of 'Hank Janson' who also featured in the story. And so 'Hank Janson' was introduced to an enthusiastic book buying public. Book - [SEE SCAN] - in Near Very Good brown boards with black lettering - some marking to the front board and marking to the back board although this probably happened when the book was originally bound, light bumping and wearing to the extreme corners and extreme ends of the spine. Contents, light marking to the pastedowns and front and rear free endpaper otherwise clean, bright and tightly bound. A Rare and Highly Collectable Title for any Janson completist. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: 201-750 grams. Category: Fiction; Inventory No: 004687. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        CHRISTMAS STORY. Presentation Copy

New York: Alfred A. Knopf., 1946 Original cloth, illustrated label, dustwrapper in near fine condition bearing the original $1.00 price. First book edition of Christmas Story for adults originally published in the "New Yorker" in 1944. Inscribed by the author on the title-page: "For John L. Lewis To recall a brief encounter in Washington H.L. Mencken". Covers a bit spotted & faded, else very good. Mencken's shortest book. A charming tale about Christmas & prohibition. John L. Lewis (1880-1969), an American labor leader, was president of the UMWA from 1920-1960. He was a giant among American leaders in the first half of the twentieth century, regularly advising presidents and challenging America's corporate leaders. His work to organize the country's industrial workers through the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO) in the 1930s helped raise living standards for millions of American families. His copy. Very Nice. Written in Mencken's inimitable style. "The great artists of the world are never Puritans, and seldom respectable. No virtuous man - that is, virtuous in the Y.M.C.A. sense has ever painted a picture worth looking at, or written a symphony worth hearing, or a book worth reading .". Signed by Author. 1st Edition. Illus. by Bill Crawford.
