Better than Near Fine (minor spotting to boards and gutters, spine slightly faded, but lettering legible and strong); about Fine price-clipped jacket, unusually vivid, fresh and bright. Overall an excellent example of an important novel. Grimshaw A7.a1. Time 100. Modern Library 100, 36. & ¶ "More than just a classic political novel, Warren’s tale of power and corruption in the Depression-era South is a sustained meditation on the unforeseen consequences of every human act, the vexing connectedness of all people and the possibility—it’s not much of one—of goodness in a sinful world. Willie Stark, Warren’s lightly disguised version of Huey Long, the onetime Louisiana strongman/governor, begins as a genuine tribune of the people and ends as a murderous populist demagogue. Jack Burden is his press agent, who carries out the boss’s orders, first without objection, then in the face of his own increasingly troubled conscience. And the politics? For Warren, that’s simply the arena most likely to prove that man is a fallen creature. Which it does."       New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1946. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1946. First American edition. Fine/about Fine. A Fine copy of the book in a just about Fine dust jacket with niggling wear at the spine ends and front flap fold; one half-inch closed tear on the rear panel without loss. Easily the cleanest copy of this edition that we have come across. & & Camus'; groundbreaking debut novel, first published in French in 1942, follows the story of the emotionally cold and uncaring Meursault, who cryptically shoots and kills an Arab on a beach. This incredibly influential novel is thought to typify Camus'; idea of the absurdness of man';s condition, a theme which runs throughout his works. Camus, of course, would be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1957, the first African-born winner of the prize. "Camus' brilliantly told story of controlled despair..." (Contemporary New York Times Review). Fine in about Fine. dust jacket.

        Dangling Man [Signed]

London: John Lehmann, 1946. London: John Lehmann, 1946. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine-. First Impression ("First published in England 1946"). Small, slim 8vo: 191,[1]pp. Publisher's finely woven sunflower cloth, spine stamped in brown, in the superb pictorial pictorial dust jacket (price-clipped). Signed by Bellow on front fly leaf. Fine, tight (probably unread) and bright in close to Fine jacket with touch of usual darkening to spine and back panels but front panel still vivid. & ¶ First book, a slim, quiet masterpiece, from the Nobel prizewinning author of Herzog, Augie March and Henderson the Rain King. Joseph, the novel's protagonist, "is a would-be writer and intellectual caught waiting for the Draft, who romantically believes that intellectual and spiritual enlightenment is to be attained by isolating himself within the confines of a room in a cheap Chicago boarding house while he studies the great writers of the Enlightenment. It also reflects the 1940s preoccupation of American intellectuals with French existentialism and themes of individual freedom, the meaning of moral responsibility, death, and social contract. . . . [In it is] much of Bellow's early life as a young newly-wed intellectual, immersed in literature of all kinds, poor and ambitious, isolated in his in-laws' Ravenswood apartment writing his first novel on a card table in the back room. It is also the lament of a young American artist who does not know how to join the mainstream of Chicagoan or American life without losing the spiritual value of his isolation. Critics hailed Dangling Man as an important novel written with style and genuine mastery." (Literary Encyclopedia) Yet another example of the value to be found in the graphically superior designs of most UK editions of American authors's works. N. B.         War Speeches 1940 - 1945

London: Cassell and Company Ltd., 1946. London: Cassell and Company Ltd., 1946. 1st Edition. Paperback. Very good. This is the first collected edition of Churchill's war speeches, published as a paperback only in 1946. Size: 5.5 x 8.5 inches, bound in pale blue paper wraps with turn in flaps like a DJ, and with contents printed on cheap pulpy paper. With only one softcover printing, this has proven a very scarce and fragile edition - among the most difficult of Churchill's books for collectors to find in respectable condition. Offered here is a well-preserved example of this highly perishable edition. The wraps are highly complete, with just a tiny triangular chip at the upper front hinge and fractional chipping at the spine ends. Moreover, the binding is square and sound. Spine presentation is unusually good for this edition, with all lettering intact and clearly legible and the bright blue color unfaded. There is light wear at edges, light overall soiling, and small "2L" pencil notation on the top right corner of the front cover. The front flap is unclipped. The contents are age-browned as is unavoidable given the pulp paper, but there is no trace of spotting. The book is protected in a removable, archival mylar sleeve.       London: Butterworth & Co., Ltd., 1946. London: Butterworth & Co., Ltd.,, 1946. Octavo. Original green cloth, titles to spine gilt. Cloth rubbed and dulled, spine toned. A very good copy. First edition, first impression of "the only book that Fleming prepared regarding his discovery of the antibiotic properties of penicillin" (Norman 800). Inscribed by Fleming on the front free endpaper to one of the book's contributors, "To my friend G. B. Mitchell-Heggs, Alexander Fleming". Gordon Barrett Mitchell-Heggs was a physician specialising in dermatology who wrote at least two articles on penicillin: "Penicillin and the General Practitioner" which is the concluding piece in this collection, and "Penicillin in Dermatology". In addition to his membership in the Royal College of Physicians, Mitchell-Heggs served as a lieutenant colonel with the Royal Army Medical Corps in Italy during the Second World War, and was awarded the Order of the British Empire. Inscriptions by Fleming are particularly uncommon, and this is an excellent association.

        The Inhabitants

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1946. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1946 New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1946. First Edition [with "A"]. Signed and inscribed by Morris on the dedication page, as below. Illustrated from Morris' own photographs. 11 x 9 , unpaginated, olive tan cloth stamped in blind on upper cover, lettered in black on spine, pictorial jacket. Jacket has 1" chip at head of spine, worn and rubbed at extremities, small tear on rear panel; small stain spots on book spine, several pages near the beginning have a small stain; contents otherwise fine. About Near Fine better example, in an unclipped jacket which is close to very good. See scans. This, the third novel of the (originally) Nebraskan writer/photographer, was the first in what Scribner's intended to be a series in the form: loosely interconnected poetic prose and verse, illustrated with actual photgraphs by the writer conveying the mood. In this experiment in form, Morris uses his American-zen near-minimalist style to good effect, and his accompanying bleak Rural Heartland photographs finally give me an appreciation of all those non-REM dreams I've had: the bleak can, indeed, be beautiful. Inscribed on the dedication page: "For Augustus - who knows, I'll bet, what it is to be an inhabitant. Wright." Tersely Morrisian; wish I knew more about the recipient. Scarce as signed, presentation. l-48n

Sagan [Report of the shooting of 50 RAF officers, submitted to the JAG, 1946]

London: War Crimes Interrogation Unit, 1946. London: War Crimes Interrogation Unit, 1946. JAG ref: MD/JAG/FS/22/2(2A). Very good. 86pp + appendices +map. 34.5cm. Paper covered boards, bolt fasteners. Interior brigh, typescript, b/w photographs tipped in, folding map at rear. Scattered ink notations. A copy of the report submitted to the Judge Advocate General regarding the escape of 76 Allied air officers during the night of 24-25 March, 1944, from Stalag Luft-III. Of these, 50 were recaptured and executed by German camp commandants and the German secret police on orders from Hitler. After news of the executions came to light in Britain, postwar investigations were made by the police arm of the Royal Air Force to apprehend a list of over 30 suspects for interrogation and possible trials. This report includes photographs of the Sagan Memorial, a list of the executed airmen and transcripts of witness testimony. Two copies of the report are held in the British National Archives, a total of 18 were produced for members of the JAG, Wing-Commander Wilfred Bowes of the investigative team and other members of the inquiry. A total of 18 surviving members of the German Luftwaffe, Army and SS were tried specifically for crimes related to the executions at Sagan, of those, 13 were sentenced to death and executed in 1948. The escape provided the story line for Steve McQueen's film "The Great Escape", and has been the subject of several films and documentaries since. There are currently three known survivors of the escape still alive.
