        Autograph Postcard Signed

Autograph Postcard Signed and dated 13 January 1946 to artist Theodore Spicer Simson, granting him permission to produce a medallion of Shaw's wife, who had died three years before. Old glue remnants on the verso, not obscuring the recipient's address, very good. Earlier, Simson had published Men of Letters of the British Isles: Portrait Medallions from the Life (1924) which included G.B.S. In full: "My wife died in 1943. She was sensitive about her personal appearance, and resented the slightest attempt to pass her off as a conventionally pretty woman. The result was that she could not bear any sort of portrait. The photographs I have were forced on her by the passport authorities. Your medallion, which was kindly if not flattering --- a bit sonsie perhaps --- shared the general fate. But there is now no reason why you should not reproduce the medallion ad lib. I, as her executor, have no objection. Both medallions are at your disposal if you can reproduce them and find any market for them. Glad to hear from you again after all the dangers. G. Bernard Shaw." .

Independent People [Signed] [Sjálfstætt fólk / Signet]

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1946. First American edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/near fine. A Near Fine copy of the first American edition, first printing, of one of Halldor Laxness' most important works (spine ends mildly pushed, spine gilt slightly dulled with a touch of rubbing, topstain shows some light fading near the spine) in a Near Fine dust jacket (light edge wear and light chipping at the corners, spine slightly darkened),SIGNED BY HALLDOR LAXNESS on the half-title. Halldor Laxness won the 1955 Nobel Prize in Literature "for his vivid epic power which has renewed the great narrative art of Iceland", the only Icelander ever to have won the Prize. Set in the early 20th Century, and published as a single volume in America, this great epic originally appeared in two volumes, "Landnámsmaður Íslands" (1934 - which, translated, means "Icelandic Pioneers") and "Erfiðir tímar" (1935 - which, translated, means "Hard Times"). The two works together comprise "Independent People", the tale of Bjartur, a poor Icelandic sheep farmer who, only recently freed from a system of debt bondage, struggles to survive in Iceland's harsh environment. In his presentation speech at the Nobel Prize ceremony, about Laxness and "Independent People", E. Wessén, Member of the Swedish Academy, stated: "Individual people and their destinies always move us most deeply in Halldór Laxness' novels.....Even more affecting, perhaps, is the story of Bjartur, the man with the indomitable will for freedom and independence, Geijer's yeoman farmer in an Icelandic setting and, with monumental, epic proportions, the settler, the landnámsman of Iceland's thousand-year-old history. Bjartur remains the same in sickness and misfortune, in poverty and starvation, in raging snowstorms and face to face with the frightening monsters of the moors, and pathetic to the last in his helplessness and his touching love for his foster daughter, Ásta Sóllilja." In the view of many, "Independent People" was of great importance in Laxness' winning of the Prize. Signed copies of this epic and important novel are quite scarce, and signed copies in English translation are even more so. A Very Good copy of one of Halldor Laxness' most significant works, SIGNED BY HALLDOR LAXNESS. QUITE SCARCE.

        Full Production Without War

Princeton: Princeton University Press. 1946. First. First edition. Spotting on the boards and a small paper remnant adhered to the base of the spine from the jacket, as well as a pencil note from a bookseller dated in 1985 giving the provenance of the book, thus very good in very good dustwrapper with some small chips and tears at the extremities. Inscribed by the author: "To Susan Jenkins affectionately Harold Loeb." Jenkins was the wife of William Slater Brown, designer for the Provincetown Theatre, and a close friend of Eugene O'Neill's. Loeb's inscriptions are scarce. He was an important figure in Paris' expatriate community. He is also remembered in the literary world as the model for Jake Barnes' rival for the affection of Lady Brett Ashley in The Sun Also Rises, wherein his early kindnesses to Hemingway (using his influence with Horace Liveright to get In Our Time published) was repaid by being portrayed as Robert Cohn, the cowardly and especially "Jewish" villain. .

        The Heavenly Tenants

New York: Harper & Brothers. (1946). First. First edition. Quarto. Pictures by Ilonka Karasz. Some foxing to the page edges, very near fine in very good dustwrapper with two chips on the front panel and some short tears. Author's scarce children's book, illustrated by a New Yorker colleague. This copy with a long Inscription by Maxwell at a later date, to an important editor: "May 7, 1980. Dear Bob, It was the artist's idea to put a salt-box house on a Wisconsin farm, and since the illustrator wanted it done, and also was my friend, I didn't have the heart to ask her to do it over again in the interests of verisimilitude. But the farm is a real farm, ten miles from Portage, and so far as I know unchanged to this day. I don't believe there has been much change in the heavens, either. You will find that same farm in 'Bright Center of Heaven' if you succeed in getting a copy, a thing I would not consider possible for anyone but you. Scarce as hen's teeth. But so is this. W.M." A wonderful inscription in an uncommon book. .

József Révai (1898-1959) was a communist politician, one of the founders of the Hungarian Communist Party in 1918. He became friend with Lukács before the time of the Hungarian Soviet Republic. Révai was member of Lajos Kassák's Ma circle and published his poems in Kassák's periodicals. He was also member of the Galilei Circe the association of progressive left wing intellects, and the editor of "Vörös Újság" (Red Journal) the newspaper of the Hungarian communists. After the fall of the Hungarian Soviet Republic he fled to Vienna, where he worked as a journalist. In 1930 he went back to Hungary where he got arrested and sentenced to prison for three years. In 1934 he fled to the Soviet Union and worked for the Comintern. Révai went back to Hungary in 1944 as one of the four leaders of the communist dictatorship. Between 1945-1956 he was member of the Central Committee and the Political Committee (1945-1953, 1956). Révai was the Minister of Culture from 1949, controlled all aspects of the cultural life. Georg (György) Lukács (1885-1971) was a Marxists political thinker, aesthete, university teacher, politician, literary critic, member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Lukács was among the most important and most influential philosophers of the era, the founder of the tradition of Western Marxism. He studied in Budapest, Berlin where he made acquaintance with Georg Simmel, in Heidelberg where he became friends with Max Weber, Ernst Bloch and Stefan George. He was actively involved in the Communist movement and became People's Commissar for Education and Culture (deputy to the Commissar for Education) and the political commissar of the Hungarian Red Army during the Hungarian Soviet Republic in 1919. After the fall of the régime he was arrested in Vienna and only the intervene of Western writers saved him from extradition. Among these authors were Heinrich and Thomas Mann who later based Naphta's character in "The Magic Mountain" on Lukács. In 1923, during the exile in Vienna his first major work "Geschichte und Klassen-bewusstsein" (History of Class Consciousness) was published by Malik Verlag. Lukács lived in Berlin in the early 1930's than he moved to the Soviet Union in 1933 and stayed there until the end of Second World War when he moved back to Budapest, to establish the new Hungarian government as member of the Hungarian Communist Party. He had major role in the removal of independent and non-communist intellectuals from all positions. During the Revolution in 1956 he served as minister in the revolutionary government of Imre Nagy which opposed the Soviet Union. After the revolution he was not allowed to publish in Hungary until 1964. Lukács's major works are History and Class Consciousness which is considered as the base of Western Marxism, and The Historical Novel in which he defines the genre of historical fiction and traces its development.
