HISTORY OF WESTERN PHILOSOPHY. And its connection with political and social circumstances from the earliest times to the present day

London: George Allen & Unwin Ltd, 1946. FIRST LONDON EDITION. 8vo., 8-7/8" x 5-7/8", 916pp. Bound recent full brown morocco, ribbed gilt decorated spine, gilt lettered red morocco spine label, covers ruled in gilt, top edge gilt. A finely bound copy of Russell's hugely popular history, broadly covering covering philosophers and philosophical thought from the Pre-Socratics up to John Dewey and William James, and finishing with Logical Analysis. Russell won the Nobel prize for Literature in 1950, with the Nobel committee listing this title among the works that influenced their decision. While criticised by some as being too general, many found the book an accessible and easily readable introduction to Philosophy and it became a best seller which has not been out of print since.

        Paterson

(New York): New Directions. (1946, 1948, 1949, 1951, 1958). First. First editions. Five volumes. A somewhat worn set of the first editions, lacking the dustwrappers. Poet and critic Karl Shapiro's copies with his ownership signature in each of the first four volumes and his notes in each volume. Shapiro has marked the number of each volume (in Roman numerals) on the front board and on the spine. Shapiro was an important if not easily classifiable poet. He rejected both the "new criticism" and the pragmatists and instead settled on Walt Whitman and William Carlos Williams as his models for great American poetry. His championship of Williams' poetry, and particularly of Paterson, was influential in establishing the high regard in which the work is now held. A magnificent association copy of one of the great American poem cycles. Connolly 100. .

        Heed the Thunder

Greenberg, New York 1946 - First edition. A fairly worn, but presentable, good only copy lacking the dustwrapper. This copy Inscribed by the author in pencil: "For Lois and Jim[?] very gratefully Jim Thompson 2-20-46." We do not know who the recipients were, but curiously, the dedicatees were Lois and Elliott McDowell. Whether this is the same Lois, with another companion is not immediately clear to us. Books signed by Thompson are very rare. We have sold three other books signed by Thompson in the past 20 years, and of those, two were considerably later paperback titles. The only other inscribed hardcover was another copy of this title inscribed about ten months after this one, thus making this the earliest inscribed Thompson book we have seen. To put it in context, we have handled more books signed by either J.D. Salinger or Thomas Pynchon than we have of Thompson. A superb copy of an exceptionally uncommon book, the second of only three hardcover novels published during the hardboiled author's lifetime. See this book in 3D on our site.         ALL THE KING'S MEN

NY: Harcourt Brace & Co., (1946) - First Edition of the Pulitzer Prize-winning modern literary classic, a highspot of modern literature. The landmark novel, more than loosely based on the career of famed Louisiana governor Huey Long, was the basis for the 1949 Academy Award-winning film (which took Oscars for Best Picture, and for actors Broderick Crawford and Mercedes McCambridge). A new film adaptation opened late in 2005, starred Sean Penn, Jude Law, Kate Winslet, James Gandolfini and Anthony Hopkins. First Editions of this scarce title are rare indeed, and a copy of this extraordinary quality would be hard to beat. A lovely, perfectly fine copy in an extremely close to fine dust jacket, bright, crisp, non-price-clipped, and with the most miniscule, barely noticeable, shallow chipping -- hardly discernable -- and only to the top fold of the front panel. All The King's Men lists at #36 on the Random House/Modern Library 100 Best Books of the Century. It is highly unlikely a finer copy can be found. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
