HELEN KELLER TYPED LETTER, SIGNED, 1946 ON PERSONAL LETTERHEAD

1946 - KELLER, Helen. HELEN KELLER TYPED LETTER, SIGNED, 1946 ON PERSONAL LETTERHEAD. 1 folded 8 1/2 x 11" sheet, Helen Keller's personal stationery, addressed (with original stamped envelope) to a Mr. Bachand of Worcester, Massachusetts, and dated November 30, 1946. The letter, which is an entreaty for financial support for the newly formed Committee on the Deaf-Blind of the American Foundation for the Blind, refers to Mr. Bachand as "dear friend," and is signed in ink in Keller's hand. At the time, Keller had been working for the AFB for twenty years (as she reiterartes in the letter). The letter's eloquent appeal contains descriptions of the experience of being without sight or hearing. Note the following paragraph: "All your pleasure would vanish in a dreadful monotony of silent days. Even work, man's Divine heritage -- work that can bind up broken hearts -- would be lost to you. Family and friends might surround you with love, but consolation alone cannot restore usefulness, or bring release from that hardest prison -- a tomb of the mind and a dungeon of the body." The letter is creased but not terribly so. A small two-color brochure (not in Braille) soliciting funds is included, with the Board of Trustees of the Committee printed on the back.

        1. Jg. (1946) Nr. 1 v. 1. April - 3. Jg. (1948), Nr. 63 v. 15. November.

Typed Manuscript, Corrected and Signed, of the Author's Unpublished Novel "The Enemy"

1946. Folio. Typed sheets, both ribbon and carbon bound in half calf and marbled papercovered boards. 118pp. Slight wear, near fine, possibly unfinished. Signed by the author on the front fly. An unpublished manuscript for a novel written in 1946. Like Mills's 1943 first published novel, The Choice, The Enemy is set in Italy. Mills was born in Griffin, Georgia and studied sporadically at the Universities of Virginia, North Carolina, and Florence (Italy), as well as at an Atlanta college. The manuscript shows numerous corrections, deletions, and additions on nearly every page, along with some cutting and pasting by the author. Apparently unpublished though both The Choice and his 1952 novel, The Alexandrians, were bestsellers. We do not know why this novel was not published. .

        Anthem

Los Angeles: Pamphleteers, Inc. 725 Venice Boulevard, 1946. First American edition, first issue. 12mo. 98 pp. Original wrappers, printed in black. Fine. Perinn A2b. Provenance: from the Estate of New York architect, ELY JACQUES KAHN . Rand's anti-Collectivist novella was first printed in London in 1938; she revised it for the first American edition (1946), which comprised the entire issue (2000 copies) of "The Freeman" , vol. III, No. 1, and mailed to subscribers. The second issue (1500 copies) has the front cover printed in red and was destined for book stores. This copy has an especially important provenance, being from the library of the famous New York architect ELY JACQUES KAHN, in whose office Rand worked during 1937 while researching the profession of architect for her novel, THE FOUNTAINHEAD (1943). Laid into this copy is an early piece of ephemera bearing on Kahn's career: loosely inserted is the printed page from the 1909 exhibition catalogue of his two architectural drawings for the Salon. He was 23 years old at the time, and would later build over 30 major buildings in New York City. For a stunning illustrated list of his achievements, see ELY JACQUES KAHN, NEW YORK ARCHITECT (NY, Acanthus Press, 1995) His association with Ayn Rand is equally important to her career, and, in particular, her masterwork novel about the architect Howard Roark, THE FOUNTAINHEAD. According to Barbara Branden in her biography THE PASSION OF AYN RAND (1986, pp. 143-144), in 1937 "Ayn decided to spend a few months working in an architect's office, without pay, in order to become familiar with the day-to-day activities of the profession. Through a friend she met the famous New York architect Ely Jacques Kahn and he agreed to her plan ... Ayn spent six months working in Kahn's office as a filing clerk, typist, and general assistant. He was the only one in the office who knew that her real purpose was research for a novel, and he seemed charmed by the adventure of having her there ... It was while working for Kahn that Ayn solved the problem of devising a climax for her novel. One day, she asked Kahn 'What is the biggest technical problem in architecture at the moment?' He told her it was in the field of housing projects, and that the difficulty lay in finding a means of building modern structures at the lowest possible cost ... 'When he said "housing," something clicked for me. I thought that this was both a political issued and an architectural issue, and that it fitted my purposes. I knew that it was a good lead ... Suddenly - like Newton's apple - the total of the climax fell into place ... From then on, it was easy ... ' Ayn's idea for the climax of THE FOUNTAINHEAD was that Howard Roark would dynamite Cortlandt Homes, the housing project he had created." When the galleys for the book came out several years later, Rand asked Kahn to check it for any architectural inaccuracies. Kahn made a couple of corrections, Rand recounted, and, as quoted by Branden, "'I was tremendously pleased - I was really delighted ... I asked if he wanted an acknowledgment for his assistance, and he said no, it was not professionally appropriate, but that he would like me to give a general acknowledgment to the profession because they get so little recognition. And that's why I put the note in the front of the book, I felt I had to."' Rand's note of acknowledgment - which might well have been to the man himself - does indeed follow Ely Jacques Kahn's suggestion, and reads: "I offer my profound gratitude to the great profession of architecture and its heroes who have given us some of the highest expression of man's genius."

Editions Flammarion, Nov. 1946. In-4 En feuillets. Etat d'usage. He proved to be a thoroughly good gardener but while he was working one day blood gushed from his throat. The generous Gleasons acted quickly to save his life and succeeded.         Full Production Without War

Princeton University Press, Princeton 1946 - First edition. Spotting on the boards and a small paper remnant adhered to the base of the spine from the jacket, as well as a pencil note from a bookseller dated in 1985 giving the provenance of the book, thus very good in very good dustwrapper with some small chips and tears at the extremities. Inscribed by the author: "To Susan Jenkins affectionately Harold Loeb." Jenkins was the wife of William Slater Brown, designer for the Provincetown Theatre, and a close friend of Eugene O'Neill's. Loeb's inscriptions are scarce. He was an important figure in Paris' expatriate community. He is also remembered in the literary world as the model for Jake Barnes' rival for the affection of Lady Brett Ashley in *The Sun Also Rises*, wherein his early kindnesses to Hemingway (using his influence with Horace Liveright to get In Our Time published) was repaid by being portrayed as Robert Cohn, the cowardly and especially "Jewish" villain.         [Photo Album]: Hot Shot Swing Band

Oblong small quarto. String-tied Japanese-style lacquer-illustrated boards. 38 mounted photographs, black and white, various sizes (between 3.25" x 4.25" and 7" x 5"); laid in are an additional 17 black and white snapshots (mostly 3.74" x 2.25"). Boards detached but present, overall very good, internally near fine. Pictures in the album feature the Hot Shot Swing Band, a jazz band made up of mostly African-American Air Force servicemen, presumably in Japan during the occupation in the late 1940s (two of the service men we could identify both enlisted in 1946). A clipping tipped-in shows the probable owner and compiler of the album, saxophone player, Private Donald L. Turner. The band (piano, sax, bass, drums) shares top billing in the album with (probably) Japanese exotic dancers, several featuring full frontal nudity (most of the laid in pictures depict the dancers nude; the images of dancers that are mounted in the album are mostly just scantily clad). An interesting vernacular album of a young African-American serviceman playing jazz in Japan. .

Autograph Letter Signed, 2 pages, 8vo, Washington, September 24, 1946

      - This letter was written for publication, addressed to the editor of the New English Weekly. Philip Mairet, about Basil Bunting. "Can anyone send news of Basil Bunting? Considered by a small, determined but highly competent group of leaders to be the most interesting Eng. poet of the late 1920s or early '30s - Quaker - conscientious objector in first world war, said by the Chicago 'Poetry' to have been doing ground work in air-force, last seen according to rumour on a Trawler.?" Signed, "Dorothy Pound.". After World War II, when Ezra Pound was incarcerated in a mental hospital after having been indicted for treasonous activities against the United States and in support of Mussolini's fascist regime, Dorothy Pound moved to Washington in 1946 to be near her husband, and thereafter had legal control of his estate.         "Matthew Flinders' narrative of his voyage in the schooner Francis: 1798 preceded and followed by notes on Flinders, Bass, the wreck of the Sidney Cove, &c., by Geoffrey Rawson with engravings by John Buckland-Wright."

[London]. 1946. "Edition limited to 750 copies, folio, pp. 100-[102]; full-p. map, frontispiece, title vignette, and 6 handsome wood-engravings printed in green; previous owner's bookplate, else fine in orig. green cloth stamped in gilt, t.e.g. ""This is another book of daring exploration in our Sea Series. I tried to produce these stories of high adventure in an exciting way, and planned to make the book a symphony in green. I even thought of scenting the paper with seaweed, and imagined clients commenting to each other: Strange thing about this book - it seems to bring a breath of the sea! The idea was humorously reported by my friend Robert Harling in Alphabet and Image, and I now hear that some advertisers are using my idea by scenting their paper suitably to obtain particular effects. The printing of John Buckland-Wright's magnificent engravings in green ink on gray-green paper was not entirely successful, as it diminished the essential brilliance obtained only by a contrast of full blacks on whites"" (Christopher Sandford, the printer, in Cockalorum, Bibliography of the Golden Cockerel Press, 170)."

"For her latest excursion into the art or science of gastronomy is more an anthology of the finest writing on the subject than strictly a text of her own composition. Here are extensive excerpts from such widely diversified writers as Edgar Saltus, Petronius Arbiter, Tobias Smollett, Lucius Apuleius, Ovid, Rabelais, Plato and others. Mrs. Fisher begins her book with the introductory verse to the King James Version of the Bible: 'In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.' And she concludes with long excerpts from gastronomic Americana, ranging from Washington Irving to Ernest Hemingway. Spread thickly in between is a royal feast, indeed!". - New York Times.         POSTER - Plaza de Toros de Vista-Alegre - Bilbao

Ortega, Valencia 1946 - This is not a book but a wonderfully colourful ORIGINAL 1946 Spanish Bullfighting Poster. Measuring 104cm x 54.5cm, it is by J. Reus and it advertises a bullfighting event in Bilbao for 24 March 1946 starring the matadors Pedro Robredo, Ricardo Baldera de Mejico and Lorenzo Pascual Belmonteno. The poster was printed by Ortega of Valencia and it bears the printer's name at the bottom and also the square stamp of authenticity to the lower right side with a print number of 1572. The brittle poster, whilst all original, has folds and creases, as well as light damage to the top edge. All of this could be rectified by a skilled archivist and, of course, the poster would be best conserved by professional linen-backing. We believe that few of these would have survived so long in anything approaching collectable condition, as they were meant to be pasted up on billboards. Our shop acquired this poster (one of a collection of 5) many years ago from a customer who used to live in Spain. We're now having a clear out of our basement and we have decided to put it on sale internationally. The poster will be sent, well packed, in a sturdy tube. Please note that by selling such a piece of original art, we do not necessarily approve of or support the sport of bullfighting.
