Pascual Duarte's Family (The Family of Pascual Duarte)

London: Eyre & Spottiswoode, 1946. First edition in English of the Nobel Prize-winning author's masterpiece. Octavo, original cloth. Signed by Camilo Jose Cela on the title page. Light rubbing, near fine in a near fine dust jacket with some light wear. Rare signed. The Family of Pascual Duarte is the story of Pascual Duarte -- a Spanish peasant born into a brutal world of poverty, hatred, and depravity -- as told from his prison cell, where he awaits execution for the murders he's committed throughout his lifetime. Despite his savage and cruel impulses, Pascual retains a childlike sense of the world and a groping desire to understand the blows of fate that led him down his bloody path. Originally published in the same year as Camus's The Stranger -- to which it has been compared. "After Don Quixote, probably the most widely read novel in Spanish" (The New York Times).

One Man in His Time [FIRST EDITION PUBLISHED 1946]

Pendulum Publications Limited, U.K, 1946. First Edition. Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. 158 pages, size 7.25 inches tall by 4.75 inches. Now famed for his 'pulp fiction', Stephen Daniel Frances, launched Pendulum Publication as WWII was ending. Pendulum then published this, his first novel, semi-autobiographical it did not sell well. For some reason his name is spelt 'Francis' on the front board but correctly 'Francis' on the title page. With the failure of this to sell and two other novels unpublished Francis took advice and changed genre. American 'hard-boiled' crime fiction was selling well and Francis wrote and sold 'When Dames Get Tough' in 1946, using the pen-name of 'Hank Janson' who also featured in the story. And so 'Hank Janson' was introduced to an enthusiastic book buying public. Book - [SEE SCAN] - in Near Very Good brown boards with black lettering - some marking to the front board and marking to the back board although this probably happened when the book was originally bound, light bumping and wearing to the extreme corners and extreme ends of the spine. Contents, light marking to the pastedowns and front and rear free endpaper otherwise clean, bright and tightly bound. A Rare and Highly Collectable Title for any Janson completist. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: 201-750 grams. Category: Fiction; Inventory No: 004687..

Personnages - Original etching from the set "Les gens sont bien plus beaux qu'ils croient - 1946" by Jean DUBUFFET

Jean DUBUFFET, Paris 1946 - - PRESENTATION : original etching on vellum by Jean DUBUFFET. - TITLE : Personnages (portrait of four people : Jean Paulhan, Jean Fautrier, Pierre Benoit, Jean Dubuffet). - MEDIUM : etching and aquatint. - PAPER : heavy vellum. - SIZE : 20 x 13" (49 x 33cm). - YEAR : 1946. - REFERENCES : this etching is referenced in the Annexe of the catalog raisonné of prints by Dubuffet, vol. 2 page 206-207. - INFORMATIONS : this early etching is extremely rare, the catalog raisonne quotes that the only other known proofs are at the MOMA in NYC and in the collection of the estate of Dubuffet. - HISTORY : In 1946, Dubuffet and Fautrier bought and installed a small press in Fautrier's house and started to work on etchings. Dubuffet created 8 etchings depicting its friends. An exhibition was done in 1947 at gallery Drouin, under the title "Portraits - Les gens sont bien plus beaux qu'ils croient - Vive leur vraie figure". It's not sure that the etchings were exhibited at this time : probably no commercial proofs were done and the only existing ones were printed by Dubuffet himself for its friends. - LITERATURE : Initially, the series was based on personalities in the literary salon of Florence Gould, to which Dubuffet had been introduced by Jean Paulhan, including Paulhan himself, Pierre Benoit, Marcel Jouhandeau, and Paul Léautaud; it was then extended to include other friends and acquaintances, such as Antonin Artaud, Francis Ponge, Henri Michaux, and Jean Fautrier. Dubuffet's aggressive, graffiti-style caricatural portraits of 1946-47 are in part caricature in the simplest sense, a mocking variant on the pantheons of artists that had become sober clichés of even 'radical' French art, as in Surrealist group portraits. But Dubuffet's portraits manifest the revolt, and revulsion, of intellectuals: mental energy and will are now all that matter, and the body can (indeed must.) go to hell. His writers and intellectuals are pathetic monsters, their features reduced to pop-eyed scrawls, their aplomb prodded into jumping-jack spasms. Yet since grotesque harshness and imbalanced disturbance are in Dubuffet's view tokens of authenticity, to be portrayed by him with scar-like contours and inept anatomy is, perversely, to be made glamorous. (High and Low / MOMA). - CONDITION : Excellent. ASK FOR EXTRA PICTURES

        Framed collection of Woodcut Illustrations

1946 - ONCHI Koshiro, artist. Framed collection of Woodcut Illustrations. After the war, Onchi Koshiro created a series of woodcut illustrations for a project involving the publication of a revamped classroom curriculum for Japanese students in the post-war era. For whatever reason, those designs do not appear to have been used -they do not appear in his catalog raisonne of prints and book illustrations. Though a series of edited and expurgated pre-war textbooks were employed immediately after the war, more permanent changes in the curriculum were not effected for several years. As this set of Onchi illustrations were designed to be used in a basic Japanese language book, it is possible that the extensive language reform after the war stopped the finalization and publication of the textbook at all. In any event, the set has a few marginal notations which indicate page placement, etc., so the project must have proceeded to the mock-up level before being abandoned. There are 11 cuts in b+w with two having light coloration. Portraits of Tolstoy, Einstein, Lincoln and Franklin combine with landscapes, insects, children at play, etc. The images seem to be suffused with a gentle sadness - they certainly seem to capture the spirit of the times. Truly a lovely and important group. There is no way to overestimate Onchi's importance to 20th century Japanese print making. This experimental group of cuts is a tribute to his art and an accurate evocation of an age. Framed in a custom mat.

        Autograph Postcard Signed

Autograph Postcard Signed and dated 13 January 1946 to artist Theodore Spicer Simson, granting him permission to produce a medallion of Shaw's wife, who had died three years before. Old glue remnants on the verso, not obscuring the recipient's address, very good. Earlier, Simson had published Men of Letters of the British Isles: Portrait Medallions from the Life (1924) which included G.B.S. In full: "My wife died in 1943. She was sensitive about her personal appearance, and resented the slightest attempt to pass her off as a conventionally pretty woman. The result was that she could not bear any sort of portrait. The photographs I have were forced on her by the passport authorities. Your medallion, which was kindly if not flattering --- a bit sonsie perhaps --- shared the general fate. But there is now no reason why you should not reproduce the medallion ad lib. I, as her executor, have no objection. Both medallions are at your disposal if you can reproduce them and find any market for them. Glad to hear from you again after all the dangers. G. Bernard Shaw." .

The drawing is spotless as well. And the book itself has held up nicely too. Solid and VG+ in its duotone cloth, with bright gilt-lettering and design at the spine. Thick octavo, 427 pgs. plus index. Also inlcludes a VG example (with light rubbing at the front panel) of publisher's pictorial slipcase, which is unique to this limited edition. . Limited. Decorative Cloth. Collectible; Very Good. Illus. by Miguel Covarrubias.

1946 - KELLER, Helen. HELEN KELLER TYPED LETTER, SIGNED, 1946 ON PERSONAL LETTERHEAD. 1 folded 8 1/2 x 11" sheet, Helen Keller's personal stationery, addressed (with original stamped envelope) to a Mr. Bachand of Worcester, Massachusetts, and dated November 30, 1946. The letter, which is an entreaty for financial support for the newly formed Committee on the Deaf-Blind of the American Foundation for the Blind, refers to Mr. Bachand as "dear friend," and is signed in ink in Keller's hand. At the time, Keller had been working for the AFB for twenty years (as she reiterartes in the letter). The letter's eloquent appeal contains descriptions of the experience of being without sight or hearing. Note the following paragraph: "All your pleasure would vanish in a dreadful monotony of silent days. Even work, man's Divine heritage -- work that can bind up broken hearts -- would be lost to you. Family and friends might surround you with love, but consolation alone cannot restore usefulness, or bring release from that hardest prison -- a tomb of the mind and a dungeon of the body." The letter is creased but not terribly so. A small two-color brochure (not in Braille) soliciting funds is included, with the Board of Trustees of the Committee printed on the back.

        1. Jg. (1946) Nr. 1 v. 1. April - 3. Jg. (1948), Nr. 63 v. 15. November.
