London: Michael Joseph, 1946. - Beautifully Illustrated by Peter ScottHandsomely Bound by Sangorski & SutcliffeGALLICO, Paul. SCOTT, Peter, illustrator. The Snow Goose. London: Michael Joseph, [1946]. Edition Deluxe limited to seven hundred and fifty copies printed on mould-made paper and signed by the author and artist (this being copy # 294). Quarto (11 1/16 x 8 5/8 inches; 281 x 220 mm.). 64 pp., including 4 full-page tipped-in color plates and numerous line drawings in the text.Bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe ca. 1946 (stamp-signed on front turn-in) in full blue crushed levant morocco, boards triple-ruled in gilt, spine with five raised bands, paneled and lettered in gilt in compartments, gilt board-edges and turn-ins, Cockerel end-papers, top edge gilt, others uncut. The absolute bare minimum of fading to spine, a very fine copy.Paul William Gallico (1897-1976) was an American novelist, short story and sports writer. Many of his works were adapted for motion pictures. He is perhaps best remembered for The Snow Goose, his only real critical success, and for the novel The Poseidon Adventure, primarily through the 1972 film adaptation."The Snow Goose is a simple, short written parable on the regenerative power of friendship and love, set against a backdrop of the horror of war. It documents the growth of a friendship between Philip Rhayader, an artist living a solitary life in an abandoned lighthouse in the marshlands of Essex because of his disabilities, and a young local girl, Fritha. The Snow Goose, symbolic of both Rhayader (Gallico) and the world itself, wounded by gunshot and many miles from home, is found by Fritha and, as the human friendship blossoms, the bird is nursed back to flight, and revisits the lighthouse in its migration for several years. As Fritha grows up, Rhayader and his small sailboat eventually are lost in the British retreat from Dunkirk, having saved several hundred men. The bird, which was with Rhayader, returns briefly to the grown Fritha on the marshes. She interprets this as Rhayader's soul taking farewell of her (and realizes she had come to love him). Afterwards, a German pilot destroys Rhayader's lighthouse and all of his work, except for one portrait Fritha saves after his death: a painting of her as Rhayader first saw her—a child, with the wounded snow goose in her arms." This image appears as the color frontispiece.Sir Peter Markham Scott (1909-1989) was a British ornithologist, conservationist, painter, naval officer and sportsman. He was the son of the Antarctic explorer, Robert Falcon Scott was named after Sir Clements Markham, mentor of Scott's polar expeditions. His Godfather was J.M. Barrie, the creator of Peter Pan. First edition of this unusual and uncommon - no copies traced on OCLC - Pabst Blue Ribbon Company salesman's sample catalogue and advertising manual. Divided into several bulletins, which were to be continually updated by the Pabst Brewing sales force and which detail the brewing process, Pabst operations, how to place beer cases on the floor, what kind of signage needed to be located in their prospective selling location, a detailed history of the company, and much more. One of the large folding colour diagrams details the brewing process in a colour cut-away view of a Pabst Brewery detailing the innovations by Pabst, including the first use of mash filters in America, sterile air in connection with large open coolers, bottom fermentation yeast for brewing lager beer, sterile liquefying of fermentation carbon dioxide, market beer in cans nationally, and high pressure speed bottle filters. Pabst had originated the use of a blue ribbon tag to be affixed to each bottle or beer in 1882 in order identify their brew. By 1889 they were advertising this blue ribbon, and promoting it as a "Select" brand. Of special interest is the wonderful sample leaf with its original period samples offers an invaluable historical reference for the brewing ingredients and processes in post-World War II America. From collection of Robert Horner, former regional sales agent for Pabst who fortunately ignored the directives to destroy the earlier portions of the manual.

Pendulum Publications Limited, 1946, Hardcover, Book Condition: Good, Dust Jacket Condition: No Jacket, First Edition. 158 pages, size 7.25 inches tall by 4.75 inches. Now famed for his 'pulp fiction', Stephen Daniel Frances, launched Pendulum Publication as WWII was ending. Pendulum then published this, his first novel, semi-autobiographical it did not sell well. American 'hard-boiled' crime fiction was selling well and Francis wrote and sold 'When Dames Get Tough' in 1946, using the pen-name of 'Hank Janson' who also featured in the story. And so 'Hank Janson' was introduced to an enthusiastic book buying public. Book - [SEE SCAN] - in Near Very Good brown boards with black lettering - some marking to the front board and marking to the back board although this probably happened when the book was originally bound, light bumping and wearing to the extreme corners and extreme ends of the spine.         London The Bastion of Liberty

London.: Chromoworks, Limited.. Ca. 1946.. Color pictographic / pictorial map poster, 38 1/2 x 48 1/2 inches (97 x 123cm), folded (probably as issued). 1/2 inch separations at the intersection of several of the folds, one of which has a 1/2 inch tear leading from that separation; overall in very good clean condition. This attractive pictorial map by artist Kerry Lee dates from the period 1945 to 1948. It is a post World War II celebration of London and the British spirit with Winston Churchill's words in the banner at upper right: "We would rather see London in ruins and ashes than that it should be tamely and abjectly enslaved," with evident reference to the fall of Paris. It was issued in different sizes over the years (this being the largest and the earliest; this printing also has a slightly glossy print quality). The main railway stations are named according to railway company (LNER etc) with additional location name (King's Cross etc) (newer versions of this map name only by location, following the nationalisation of the railway system in 1948). The Festival Hall has not yet been built (so pre 1951), with 'County Hall' being named in its place. The map shows the area of London from Earl's Court Road in the west to The City in the East, and from Regent's Park in the north to Lambeth and Bermondsey in the south. Bordering the map are vignettes of London attractions and important places (Epsom is the lower centre vignette) with coat of arms at the top centre. The map names and depicts important buildings (including all the major department stores along Oxford Street) and is liberally sprinkled with pictographs of historical characters. The publishing line at lower edge reads at left "Published in Great Britain by Chromoworks, Limited." At right: "Copyright in all countries. Published by The Travel Association of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, 6 Arlington Street, London, S.W. 1, England, for the Sole Distributors Messrs Sydney Walton and W. E. Bevan (all enquiries to the Blandford Studios, 71 Blandford Street, London, W.1.)" .

        Tributes and Other Relevant Documents

Stamford: The Overbrook Press 1946 - 8vo., blue cloth and red cover label lettered in gilt. First edition, first printing, one of 200 copies. A presentation copy, inscribed: "To my friend and associate Philip C. Jessup, with kindest regards and very sincere appreciation of his unfailing encouragement and assistance in making a great international agency for peace and good will among peoples of the world, Herbert H. Lehman, March 28, 1947," on the front endpaper. [Together with] Jessup's copy of "Funeral Service for Hon. Herbert H. Lehman, December 8, 1963" (Stamford: The Overbrook Press, 1963; 8vo., gray wrappers printed in black). ---- The recipient, Philip C. Jessup, a judge on the International Court of Justice at The Hague and veteran U.S. diplomat, was credited with playing a major role in ending the Soviet blockade of West Berlin. Jessup was a representative to the United Nations General Assembly, as well as a U.S. ambassador at large from 1949 until his resignation in 1953. During that time, he was one of the closest advisers of then-Secretary of State Dean Acheson. Meanwhile, from 1943 until 1946, as director of the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration, Lehman directed the largest international relief effort in history: 24 million tons of food, clothing, and medical supplies to 500 million victims of world war. After Jessup was maligned by Senator Joe McCarthy for purported communist "affinities," General Dwight D. Eisenhower heralded Jessup's "devotion to the principles of Americanism." McCarthy's charges kept Jessup from being reappointed to the U.S. delegation to the United Nations in 1951 but President Harry S. Truman made him an alternate delegate the following year. Like Jessup, when Senator Lehman fought McCarthyism, his colleagues told him he was committing political suicide. But Lehman said, "I will not compromise with my conscience. I will cast my vote to protect the liberties of our people." Voters respected his integrity and reelected him to the Senate. A compelling presentation copy.         The House on the Borderland

Sauk City, Arkham House. 1946, 1946. First US Edition. Strikingly bound in half black morocco over black cloth boards. Gilt titles to spine. Hodgson's adventure-philosopher is projected into a vastly distant Dying Earth future, in a story that is one of the most important influences on H.P. Lovecraft and his little cabal of twisty-headed contemporaries. Not merely containing the House On The Borderland, which the word 'seminal' only begins to describe, but also The Night Land (which makes the vision of Lovecraft look all cramped and unambitious by comparison) in convoy with The Ghost Pirates and The Boats Of Glen Carrig, tales packed to the top-sails with giant octopods, Sargasso weed and ghostly ships that pass in the night. Hyperbole aside (I believe that's also a place invented by Robert E. Howard), William Hope Hodgson has to rate as one of the best and most underrated writers of the weird and bizarre. His short but eventful life contained much in the way of adventure and invention, and the greater part of that leaps from his tales like the spray from a following sea.

The Fourth Marine Division in World War II, Foreword By Robert Sherrod (with Misc records)

Washington, DC: Infantry Journal Press, 1946. First Edition. Cloth Hardcover. Very Good. Quarto. . 237p. illustrations, color maps, medals, portraits. Lists of those who were KIA and those who died of wounds from the war. As Robert Sherrod notes in his introduction, the Fourth Marine Division was in combat a little over 60 days in World War II but saw more action than many actions seen in 600 days. The division lost about seventy-five percent of the original divisional strength. He writes: "I was privileged to be with the Fourth at Saipan and Iwo. They were men who believed in their Country, in their Corps and in their division." Laid in is (1) the original recruitment list in San Diego, an 8 page stencil document dated December 10, 1943 with the names of 437 men plus signed by First Lieutenant Ford E. Wilkins. Wilkins is listed Machine Gunner at Base Headquarters in the U.S. Marine Corps Muster Rolls, and later achieved the rank of Captain; He had established the First Sergeants School in San Diego in 1942 but was put in charge of training the newest recruits in 1943. Also an 10" x 8" photograph of the 892nd Platoon U.S. Marine Corps, San Diego, 1943. Photograph shows Platoon Sergeant was L.E. Williamson. Also names of PFC's W.M. Kendel and R.C. Sherman. [Richard Garth Sherman, 894282, no. 105 on list]; (3) a 4th Marine Division Patch; (4) two apparently unrelated newspaper clippings about World War II. Also on the list is James L. Denig who won the Silver Star and died on January 31, 1944 (see While the original First Edition is scarce in itself, the support materials included make this a very important item for the collector of U.S. Marine History.

First (and probably only) edition of this alphabet. The publishers compiled this alphabet from the artist's best published work and created a comical ABC. Each page is illustrated in b&w (Sullivant worked in line) accompanied by clever verse by Sullivant: N is for Noah. Thank you Noah for saving the deer's doe/ Yak, anteater, pig, ARMADILLO,/ Emu, sheep, cow and hen - Yes, and even the men. / But why did you save the MOSQUITO?" Sullivant, who died in 1926 was inspired by A.B. Frost's work. His work is found in many magazines including Judge and Life and his comical exaggerated drawing style is still inspiring artists today.         Gudens hustru. En hednisk kultkomedi i sju scener.

[?To my dearest / (especially the pages 118-121 are dedicated to her!) / The Author / 18th of October 1946?]. Vilhelm Moberg (1898-1973), Swedish journalist, social critic, and one of Sweden?s foremost authors of the 20th century. He was born in Algutsboda in the province of Småland, where his father served as a soldier. Moberg worked in his youth with farming and forestry. After a few years of schooling, he worked as a journalist at different provincial newspapers, in which he also published his first short stories. His breakthrough as an author came in 1927 with the novel ?Raskens. The Story of a Soldier?s Family?, where he depicts the life of the tenant farmers in 19th century Småland. His foremost work, which has been widely translated and is considered one of the finest epic works in Swedish 20th century literature, is ?The Emigrant Novels? (1949-1959). In this tetralogy he describes the Swedish emigration to North America through the story of the farmer Karl Oskar Nilsson and his wife Kristina. Moberg was politically engaged and always fought for individual rights, and for the abolition of the monarchy and the State Church of Sweden. He intervened in affairs of corrupt legal practice and published the bestselling book ?Why I am a Republican? (1955). His political views were inspired by his visits to USA and by the Swiss constitution. Moberg had a love affair with a woman named Kristina, whose name he used for the main character Kristina from Duvemåla of ?The Emigrant Novels? This love affair has remained unknown for over half a century, until a collection of his novels, all inscribed by Moberg to Kristina [Odelberg/Hedenblad (1917-2005)], appeared on the market. Judging from the tone in the inscriptions, the relation between Moberg and Kristina was initially intimate and loving, and gradually devolving into affection. In the early inscriptions from the 1940s Moberg writes, for instance: ?To Kristina, my confidant and beloved!?, and in the play ?Chastity? he writes: ?Vilhelm Moberg?s chastity ? what is left of it is hereby dedicated to Kristina? The later in-scriptions from the 1960s contain phrases like: ?with a devout greeting? and ?from her affectionate Vilhelm? In the copy of ?The Emigrants? (?Utvandrarna?, 1949) Moberg writes: ?To Kristina, my be loved, who has lent her name to the female main character in this book, with gratitude and love from The Author.? In the last inscription, in the pocket edition of ?The Emigrant Novels? from 1969, he returns to the fact that she has given her name to Kristina from Duvemåla, which shows that the thought of her had occupied his mind during all these years, and it is also a sign of her probable influence on his writing from 1945 onwards. What further strengthens this opinion is the copy of ?Our Unborn Son?, a play from 1945, which deals with the issue of abortion. This is the only one of these books that has been bestowed with a fine leather binding, with a pocket at end of the volume where Kristina has collected newspaper cuttings on the book and its author, suggesting that the theme of this novel was essential to her. The book was translated into Danish in 1947, and in the collection there is a copy of the Danish edition which has been inscribed to Kristina by the translator thus: ?? This book, which is partly about you?? [Attributes: Hard Cover]
