        Maschinenschriftlicher Brief mit Unterschrift.

Pacific Palisades, 24. 1. 1946.. Mit gedrucktem Briefkopf. 1 Bl. 27 x 18,5 cm. An Mrs. Edda Hankamer am Seton Hill College in Pennsylvania (1895-1982, gest. in Las Vegas; 1925-33 Privatdozentin für Germanistik in Köln, seit 1945 Professur Seton Hall College, 1953 University of Tennessee), Gattin des Germanisten und Publizisten Paul Hankamer, der nach Kriegsende eine Schussverletzung erlitt, der er wenig später erlag (München, 29. Juni 1945). NDB 7, 617. - Gefaltet, unterschiedlich gebräunt, kleine Randläsuren.

        POIROT AND THE REGATTA MYSTERY

London: Vallancey Press Limited, n.d. [1946]., 1946. First edition. First separate edition. 5" x 7" pictorial stiff wrappers. Several of Christie’s short stories were published separately in the 1940s and all are extremely desirable and very scarce. This copy is slightly dusty and a bit rubbed on the spine, but otherwise a fine fresh copy and rare in this condition. A World War II publication. In this story a diamond merchant and his party step off their yacht to enjoy the festivities at shore. But when the youngest member of the party, Eve Leathern, decides to play a trick with a £30,000 diamond named The Morning Star, the fun suddenly escalates into a dramatic jewel theft. The most suspected member of the party begs Hercule Poirot to solve the disappearance of the valuable gem, pleading that he is not the thief. But if he isn’t, who is?

Matthew Flinders' Narrative of his Voyage in the Schooner Francis: 1798. Preceded and Followed by Notes on Flinders, Bass, the Wreck of the Sidney Cove, &c, by Geoffrey Rawson.

Small folio. Original green full morocco, blocked in gilt, top edges gilt; pp. 100 [2]; 9 wood-engravings by John Buckland Wright, these printed in dark green; spine slightly darkened otherwise a very good copy in the slipcase. One of 750 numbered copies, this one of 100 specially bound.. "Another book of daring exploration in our Sea Series. I tried to produce these stories of high adventure in an exciting way, and planned to make the book a symphony in green." (Cockalorum 170). The author Geoffrey Rawson's own copy, with his bookplate. Also loosely inserted are: 1) A two page autograph letter (16.4.54) on Golden Cockerel Press headed paper from Christopher Sandford to Geoffrey Rawson (with a chip to top edge and some browning). Sandford, the proprietor of the Golden Cockerel Press, discusses the reviews that Rawson's Nelson's Letters had received. "The Birmingham Post gave us a splendid review; the TLS a long but stupid one - they would!; and Time and Tide a so-so one". He goes on to say that further review copies will be sent out. Sandford then makes an interesting economic point. "Times are not good for selling expensive books but I am satisfied with the progress of Nelson. I feel it is sterling worth and will continue to sell itself out slowly. Of course one cannot compare its sales with those of Flinders which came out at such a good time when everyone had money and little to spend it on." 2) A typed royalties statement (1 June 1955) to Geoffrey Rawson on Golden Cockerel Press headed paper detailing sales from 1954 - 1955. This statement would seem to confirm Sandford's assessment of the marketplace in the letter detailed above. In the year from April 1954 to March 1955 the Press sold 5 ordinary and 2 special copies of Nelson's Letters and 2 ordinary copies of Flinders' Narrative, netting Rawson a total of 2 pounds 8 shillings and 4 pence. 3) A short typed letter (22 May 1947) to Geoffrey Rawson from John King Davis, the dedicatee of the book, thanking him for the copy that had been sent to him and for the honour of the dedication, "Although I feel quite unworthy of the distinction you have conferred upon me, I am most appreciative of your kindness, and thank you for it." 4) A long autograph airletter from John King David to Geoffrey Rawson (6 June 1947). King fulsomely thanks Rawson again for dedicating the book to him before discussing the state of India. This leads into a discussion of what Rawson might include in his upcoming book on the Antarctic before discussing the sorry state of Australian politics.

        All The King’s Men.

New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company, 1946. First edition of the author's Pulitzer Prize-winning work. Review copy with the slip tipped in the front free endpaper. Octavo, original cloth. Some rubbing to the bottom cloth, an excellent example in the first issue dust jacket with light professional restoration. Housed in an elaborate custom half morocco clamshell box.         Stone tablet from the Cathedral of Notre Dame.

Cathedral of Notre Dame, Paris, May 26, 1946. 5" X 7.5". "Stone tablet measuring 5” x 7.5”, three-eighths inch thick. Five crosses are carved into the stone, one in each corner and one in the center, beneath which has been affixed the elliptically shaped seal of Cardinal Suhard, Archbishop of Paris. On verso, a 4” x 5” printed label was affixed upon which is stamped the seal of the Archbishopric of Paris. Much of the printing on the label has worn off. In French, headed “Archbishopric of Paris.” “I ... certify that this Stone Altar ... consecrated to the Archbishopric of Paris.” Dated Paris, May 26, 1946. Most of the signature of the Secretary of the Archbishopric certifying this statement has been worn off.Emmanuel Cardinal Suhard (1874-1949), the Archibishop of Paris during the German occupation, was promoted to that position on May 11, 1940, just before the fall of France. Along with many of his colleagues, he supported the Nazi’s Vichy regime. In April 1944, he had welcomed the regime’s “Head of State,” Marshal Petain, to Notre Dame and in June 1944, celebrated the funeral of Philippe Henriot, Minister of Information and Propaganda, assassinated by the Resistance fighters. Because of this, he was despised by the French Resistance. On August 26, 1944, a week after Paris was liberated, Cardinal Suhard was prevented from attending the mass of liberation in his own Cathedral of Notre Dame. The mass was attended by General Charles de Gaulle whose new provisional government had declared the Cardinal persona non grata. Suhard always denied that he had gone beyond his clerical duties in requesting his congregants to accept the Petain regime and in his relations with the German occupying forces."

        The Inhabitants

Charles Scribner's Sons, New York 1946 - Large quarto. Unpaginated (principally illustrated with photographs and texts by Wright Morris. Original beige cloth with title embossed in large letters, unclipped original dust-jacket with some wear at extremities, thin white crease on cover. The first photo-novel about America's heartland in the 1930's and 1940's, with many strikingly simple and direct photographs that perfectly represent the time and place. The photographer writes: "I saw the American landscape crowded with ruins and believed myself chosen to record this history before it was gone." * Wright Morris is the creator of the "photo-text." In The Inhabitants, photographs were paired with fictional texts; he began the project in 1938 as he traveled through the East and was moved by artifacts from the past. To his surprise, Morris began writing short prose texts related to these images, and they began to combine with the images to form something greater than the two parts. * This body of work was the product of a Guggenheim Fellowship (the second ever presented for photography), and allowed Morris to return to his native state of Nebraska to photograph the landscape and artifacts of the life he wanted the country to remember. "Like an archeologist, he focused not on people directly, but their artifacts -- objects (mostly made of wood) bearing their imprint" (Andrew Roth, The Book of 101 Books: Seminal Photographic Books of the 20th Century). In a letter to the photographer, Thomas Mann wrote: "What these courageous pictures show is the harsh beauty of ugliness, the romanticism of the commonplace, the poetry of the unpoetical." Very good antiquarian condition [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

[Attributes: Hard Cover]

Military operational research unit report no. 35: report by the British Army Observer on Exercise "Musk-ox." .

N.p. [London?]: [British Army] Department of te Scientific Adviser to the Army Council, 1946. First edition. Acceptable/Exercise Musk Ox was was the first big Allied peacetime military maneuver after World War II. It took place in the polar region of Canada around Hudson Bay, on the assumption that the arctic would be an important battleground in future wars. The maneuvers were intended to try out equipment and techniques. The Canadian army invited military observers from several nations, including Britain. The expedition set out from Fort Churchill on Hudson Bay in February 1946 to travel over 3100 miles on "snowmobiles" (that is, modified 4-passenger light tanks) that had been designed for an invasion of Norway which never happened. The route went north from Churchill to Denmark Bay, then west to Norman Wells, and south to finish at Edmonton. Lieutenant Colonel Andrew Croft (1906-1998) was the official observer for the British military. Before the war, Croft had distinguished himself on the 1934 Lindsay expedition to Greenland covering over 1000 miles. (The Wikipedia article on Croft claims that as a result of the Greenland trek, Croft held the Guinness-endorsed record for longest self-sustaining journey for more than 60 years.) For this and other expeditions, he received the Polar Medal and the Back Award from the Royal Geographical Society. His distinguished wartime career included serving with a Special Forces unit behind enemy lines in Tunisia, and several other covert missions in Scandinavia, Corsica, Italy, and France, for which he was awarded the Distinguished Service Order. After acting observer of Exercise Musk Ox, he was seconded to the Canadian Department of National Defence, to develop clothing and equipment for Arctic warfare. Crofts report was produced for internal distribution only, and very few copies exist (OCLC locates one only). This copy belonged to the inveterate French polar explorer Paul-Emile Victor (1907-1995), whose life is as closely associated with Arctic regions as his friend Jacques Cousteau's is with the ocean. This copy of the Musk Ox report not only shows Victor's bookplate, but includes an autograph, signed declaration in French, "The author, Lt. Col. Andrew Croft, is one of my friends. In 19344, with the Lindsay expedition, he crossed the empty ice from Disko Bay to Uummannaq. Upon arriving, Lindsay and Croft gave me their dogs, and they became my top dogsÂ…" The text is illustrated with Croft's excellent photography.. 34 cm; 59, [1], [24], [2] pages, and folding map. Appendices include 42 half-tone plates after photographs, and table of recorded wind velocities. Distribution list at end. Bound in original green printed wraps, stamped with accession stamps of the French Centre inter-armées de documentation militaire on upper wrap and on title page. Preserved in contemporary bristol board cover, paper title label typed on upper board and spine. Veteran condition, with old cello tape repairs to gutter of title page and several leaves of the appendices. Last appendix leaf guarded in cello tape on all edges, with cello tape repair across central part of the leaf, affecting two half-tone plates. Map folds repaired with cello tape. PAUL-EMILE VICTOR'S copy with his bookplate, and an autograph note signed by Victor remarking that the author, Croft, is a personal friend, and that Croft had given some favorite dogs to Victor in 1934.

        KZ Mauthausen

Ibis-Verlag, Linz-Wien 1946 - Unpaginated. Begins with a few pages of introductory text and a grainy reproduction of an aerial photograph of Mauthausen. The bulk of the book consists of 25 illustrations (drawings and other compositions by Wiesenthal) printed on one side with versos blank. Brief titling and some text on a separate leaf which precedes each of the illustrations (except the last). Browning and a couple of small stains on original wrapper with text and illustration printed on front cover in red and black. 30cm. This is the first edition of Wiesenthal's first book. Wiesenthal was born in the Ukraine, trained as an architect in Prague and somehow survived a variety of concentration and labor camps (and being caught nine months after a successful escape from one of them) between 1941 and 1945. His final camp was Mauthausen, a labor extermination camp ("vernichtung durch arbeit") in Austria, where he was in the process of being skeletonized on a daily diet of 200 calories per day before the camp was liberated on May 5, 1945. This book by Wiesenthal, with its chilling portrayal of the cruelty and horror of Germany's determination to exterminate Jews and others, was one of the first books by any of the survivors of those camps. Wiesenthal, of course, achieved lasting renown as a tireless Nazi Hunter for devoting much of the rest of his life to helping to hunt down and identify those who had been involved in this genocide.
