Manual of Operation for the Automatic Sequence Controlled Calculator

Harvard University Press, Cambridge MA 1946 first edition; 561 pages, 17 plates, text illustrations;. Good overall, dark blue cloth hardcover, 8x11. Ex-university library bookplate on front pastedown, pocket removed from rear leaving remnants, chipping to spine ends esp. along heel, tape residue on front board, numerals on lower spine. Binding is sound though front hinge is tender and lower third of rear hinge is begining to pull away from the textblock. Internal pages are clean and unmarked. A increasingly scarce book in any condition, this is a sound & clean copy but for the library attributes. A thick large book with fullpage black and white photographs of the Harvard Mark I electromechanical computer. A manual of operation for the Automatic Sequence Controlled Calculator, by the staff of the Computation Laboratory. with an Index, an extensive bibliography of related books & journal articles, and a historical introduction co-written by Aiken & Hopper. The Harvard Mark I was the first programmable calculating machine, and the majority of this volume is devoted to technical descriptions of its components, architecture and operation, and coding examples (some of the earliest examples anywhere of digital computer programs (see Ceruzzi, 1985). This is Volume 1 of the Annals of the Computation Laboratory of Harvard University. 'In May 1944 the staff of the Computation Project began operations with the Automatic Sequence Controlled Calculator as an activity of the Bureau of Ships. One of the first tasks undertaken was the preparation of a report setting forth the coding procedures of the calculator. This was followed by detailed plugging instructions, which unfortunately were hardly completed before the code book was out of date. In the succeeding months, computing techniques were developed so rapidly that stabilized operating instructions could not be prepared. At the same time, many mathematicians, physicists & engineers requested copies of such data on operating techniques as were available in the laboratory. This general and widespread interest encouraged the Staff to publish this Manual of Operation as the first volume of the Annals of the Computation Laboratory, rather than as a mimeographed compilation of notes as originally intended. Thus the Manual is unusual in that it is an outgrowth of notes prepared by the Staff primarily for their own use.... The Manual is also exceptional in that it represents the work of a great many people whose efforts have been closely integrated as is necessary in the operation of large-scale calculating machines. Chapters I & II represent extensions and revisions by Lt. Grace Murray Hopper, USNR, of the writer's old notes, many of which were written before work on the calculator was begun. Chapter III was written by Lieutenant Hopper with the collaboration of other members of the Staff. Chapters IV and V represent the outgrowth of the original code book and plugging instructions prepared by the writer and Lt(jg) Robert V D Campbell, USNR. Nearly every member of the Staff has made contributions to these chapters b

Adolphe ou le malheur des sentiments. Manuscrit autographe.

[AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] Autograph manuscript appeared in Arch No. 20 of October 1946 and Faux Pas.         DARK PASSAGE - INSCRIBED TO JERRY WALD

New York: Julian Messner, Inc., 1946. First Edition. First Printing. Octavo (19.25cm); black cloth, with titles stamped in gilt on spine; red topstain; dustjacket; 248pp. Presentation copy, inscribed by the Goodis in the year of publication to Jerry Wald on the front endpaper: "October 17, 1946 / To Jerry Wald - With all of my best - Dave Goodis." This copy also bears several marked passages and brief marginal notations by Wald to 15 pages (in pencil, pp.11, 23, 27-31, 101-102, 107, 123, 125, 131, 160, 168). Topstain slightly faded, with some faint rippling to cloth, else very Near Fine, without the usual flaking to the spine gilt. Dustjacket is unclipped (priced $2.00), gently spine-sunned, with some trivial wear to extremities and a shallow chip at crown (not affecting lettering); Very Good+. Basis for the 1947 film noir directed by Delmer Daves, starring Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall. The author's second hardcover book, and the one that propelled him to fame and success. Wald's own copy, clearly consulted prior to and during the filming of Dark Passage. Wald would have a hand in producing some of the most recognizable noirs and crime dramas from the period, including Background To Danger, Mildred Pierce, Key Largo, Flamingo Road, They Drive By Night, and The Harder They Fall, among others. Books inscribed by Goodis are rare; we know of but a handful that have surfaced in the market over the last 12 years. Only the second presentation copy of Dark Passage we have seen - the other, identically inscribed on the same date, was given to Jack L. Warner. A superb association. The Dark Page, Vol.1, p.114-115; Hubin, p.173.

        L'Honneur des poètes. Manuscrit autographe.

[AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] A manuscript autograph appeared in the Ark No. 18-19 of 7 August 1946 against dishonor poets Peret. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        Our Destruction in Pictures

Our Voice, Bergen-Belsen 1946 - Oblong Quarto. 38 leafs. Bound in three quarter black Moroccan with marbled boards, original, color illustrated wraps bound in. Marbled endpapers. Ribbon marker. This rare, disturbingly poignant gathering of Holocaust images, predominantly taken in the ghettos of Beldzin and Lodz and the camp in Bergen-Belsen by captured Nazi soldiers, might best be described in the words of the editors: "The incentive to produce this collection gave us our deepest desire to show the world the crimes of Germany, to give expression to the throttled cry of pain of the Jews, to the sighs of our fathers and mothers, sisters and brothers, during the frozen nights of winter and the overpowering heat of the summer which was spent in sealed railway trucks, the desire to bring back to our memories of the Jewish settlements which were drowned in torrents of Jewish blood". Prepared in advance of the Nuremberg Trials as a further evidence of Nazi crimes. Features 115 striking b/w photographs with captions in Yiddish, Hebrew, English, and German. Separate title pages in all four languages. Some creasing of front endpapers. Repairs to bound in front wraps with residue of the glue on first title page and some offsetting of b/w images to opposing blank pages. Overall in very good condition.
