[Autograph Album]: Signatures of Joe Liggins and The Honeydrippers

[New York]. [1946-1947]. Autograph album. Measuring 4 x 6 inches. String-tied maroon paper wrappers with "Autographs" on the front wrap. Very good with the silk tie a bit frayed, general rubbing and the corners a little chipped. An album containing the signatures of the five members of the rhythm and blues band Joe Liggins and The Honeydrippers," collected by "Helen" who saw them perform at The Harlem Renaissance Ballroom, the premiere venue for African-American performers and sports in New York. The group was organized by Joe Liggins (1915-1987), an African American pianist from Guthrie, Oklahoma, who had moved to California and played with a number of bands before starting his own, at once becoming a mainstay of the R&B circuit in Los Angeles. His group's breakaway hit was called "The Honeydripper" which topped the Billboard R&B chart (then called the "Race Chart") in 1945, remaining there for 18 weeks, tied with Louis Jordan's "Choo Choo Ch'Boogie" for longest running chart topper. A number of other hits followed, including "Rag Mop" and "Pink Champagne." Each member of the band - Joe Liggns, Little Willie Jackson, James Jackson, Frank Pasley, and Preston "Peppy" Prince - signed the book "To Helen, best wishes, [signature], [instrument], Honey Drippers," save Liggins who omitted the name of his instrument and the band and Jackson who omitted the name of his instrument. There are five other signatures in the album that we have been unable to identify. .

The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, 1946 1st Edition in Dust Jacket, with Custom Leather Slipcase

London: Allen & Unwin, 1946. 1st Edition, Hobbits, Lord of the Rings. Original Cloth. Very Good Plus/Very Good Minus. J.R.R. Tolkien. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, by J.R.R. Tolkien. Fourth impression published 1946, the final publication of the 1st Edition. The decorative map endpapers are clean & bright in Fine condition. No previous owners names or other writing noted. Color frontispiece, 8 mono plates, and text block all in Very Good Plus condition, a bit of wrinkling to the pages, as if stored in a damp location, but no evidence of direct moisture contact.. Straight and square, no spine lean, a well protected copy, very unusual for these early 1st Editions to survive in this condition. Produced in conformity with the war time standard's, with the distinctive 'War Time Economy Standards' title verso. This copy has its original unclipped dustjacket in Very Good Minus condition. The previous owner has reinforced the edges and folds with brown tape to the interior of the dustjacket. This has helped preserve the dustjacket, although it does show considerable wear to the edges, and the flap folds are starting to split. Dustjacket is in an archival protector, to help preserve this unrestored original dustjacket. Pages are clean, no tears or stains. The green topstain is almost completely faded, and a bit dusty. No shelf wear to the edges of the boards, only lightly bumped corners. The top of the back board has a area that looks like a burn mark, leaving an exposed edge of the boards approx. 3/4" in length. The original decorative green cloth, is unsoiled without any fading to the spine area. Despite its faults, a beautiful collectable copy, uncommon in it's original dustjacket, now housed in a custom leather slipcase. Digital photo's available, inquire if interested. Other Tolkien books available, include both the UK and US editions, original cloth bindings, custom fine bindings, and Signed/Numbered/Limited Editions. Very Good Plus / Very Good Minus.

        Photograph signed. Auden.

1946 - JACOBI, Lotte. Photograph signed. W.H. Auden. New York, circa 1946. Vintage gelatin silver print (measuring 11 by 14 inches), photographer’s penciled signature and embossed stamp on lower right corner of print recto, penciled number and name on print verso. Handsomely matted and framed, entire piece measures 22 by 17 inches. $7500.Vintage gelatin silver print by Lotte Jacobi, signed by her with her embossed “New York” studio stamp in the lower right corner of print recto, her famed 1946 portrait of poet W.H. Auden, his face half in shadow, half in soft light, quietly intent on the open book in his hands. The photographs of Lotte Jacobi, one of the 20th-century’s finest portraitists, “are celebrated for their directness, their penetrating immediacy, and their ability to convey the essence of the subject before her camera.” (Sundstrom, 1). Jacobi’s photographs captured the vibrancy of Berlin’s Weimar culture before she was forced to flee Nazi Germany in the 1930s. In the 1940s her New York studio became a second home to many, like her, exiled by force or choice from their native lands. That sensitivity resonates in this famous portrait of British poet W.H. Auden, who often “depicted himself as a voyager” and in 1946, when this was taken, had just returned from “a visit to the war ruins of Europe” (Davenport-Hines, 1, 228). Jacobi’s artistry is especially powerful here in her photograph’s ability to protectively cloak the writer and his book from the world and yet, inexplicably, draw us into a “tacit rapport between viewer and image” (Sundstrom, 1). Jacobi’s vintage gelatin silver print, rarely found in this large 11 by 14-inch format, intuitively reveals that it was only “with books” that Auden’s “hands took on a deftness and lost all the ineptitude they had with plates and cups” (Davenport-Hines, 234). With Jacobi’s trademark penciled signature at the lower right corner of the print recto, immediately beneath her embossed stamp: “Lotte Jacobi, New York.” Lightly penciled notations on print verso reading “#111” and identified “W.H. Auden.” See White, Lotte Jacobi 89; Wise, 65. From the estate of Lotte Jacobi.A fine signed print. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

» [AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] autograph manuscript that would appear under Some comments on Sade in Review No. 3-4 August 7, 1946 [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

London: Secker and Warburg. 1946. First edition, first printing. Inscribed presentation copy. Original red cloth with gilt titles to the upper board and spine, in dustwrapper. A very good copy, the binding square and firm with the odd mark and a little fading to the spine and rear panel. The contents are complete and clean throughout. With the bookplate of Anthony Powell to the front pastedown. Inscribed by the author in blue ink on the front free endpaper ?"Tony Powell / from / George Orwell?". With the supplied rubbed and darkened dustwrapper which has several small nicks to the extremities and a short closed tear to the top of the spine. Housed in a purpose made black morocco solander box with titles in gilt to the spine. Introduced by Cyril Connelly, Powell and Orwell met at the Café Royal in 1941. It was to be the start of an important friendship that, despite their political differences, lasted the remainder of Orwell?'s life. Erridge, a principle character in Powell's magnus opus ?"A Dance to the Music of Time?" (who lives as a tramp for a time, fights in the Spanish Civil War and dies in his forties) is believed to be based on his friend Orwell. An exceptionally rare presentation copy of the author's critically acclaimed collection of essays on literature and popular culture. Orwell himself, writing before he had completed Nineteen Eighty-Four, said that he thought Critical Essays one of his three most important books, along with Animal Farm and Homage to Catalonia. The collection includes such classics as ?"Raffles and Miss Blandish?" on the crucial difference between American and English detective fiction; ?"Benefit of Clergy?" in which Orwell indicts the sadism he finds in Salvador Dalí's art, and ?"Looking Back on The Spanish War?", a powerful indictment of the failure of the English intelligentsia to think clearly about the issues in the Spanish Civil War. It also deals with Orwell?'s concern, first voiced in reviews and essays when he returned from Spain, that the very concept of historical objectivity was disappearing in the West. (The seeds of Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-Four can be found in Orwell?'s thoughts on the loss of truth about Spain.)         El Alamein to the River Sangro.

Germany: Printing and Stationery Services, British Army of the Rhine, , 1946. Octavo, original blue sand-grain paper-covered boards, title gilt and Eighth Army crest in colours. Coloured map frontispiece and 16 coloured folding maps. Somewhat rubbed, head of spine chipped, front board marked. True first edition, published by the British Forces in Germany at the end of the war. This copy inscribed on the front free endpaper; "To Richard O'Brien with all good wishes, B.L. Montgomery, Field-Marshal. Berlin, 6-1-46". O'Brien was a liaison officer at Monty's HQ at Lüneberg Heath, and operated as his personal assistant, " After Jodl unconditionally surrendered to Eisenhower on 7 May, Montgomery dispatched O'Brien to Flensburg on the German?-Danish border to receive the acceptance of these terms from Field Marshal Wilhelm Keitel, head of the Wehrmacht …" (ODNB). Educated at Oundle, and Clare College, Cambridge, in 1939 while awaiting call-up O'Brien "read T. E. Lawrence's The Seven Pillars of Wisdom as preparation for military life". He faced his first military engagement at El Alamein in 1942 as a platoon commander. Caught under heavy artillery and mortar fire while floundering in a minefield, O'Brien refused medical attention for a severe wound until the survivors of his platoon had left the minefield. For which bravery he received the MC, he was awarded a bar in 1944 for leading a night patrol at Anzio. Subsequently he came near to death after a German grenade exploded at his feet. His battalion suffered such heavy casualties in northern Italy that it was disbanded. After the war he worked in industrial relations, was the first full-time executive chairman of the Manpower Services Commission, established the Employment Institute in 1985, and was chairman of the Engineering Industry Training Board, 1982-5. Knighted for his services to industry in 1980. Montgomery's own account of the campaign that secured his reputation. Of El Alamein Churchill said; "Before Alamein we never had a victory, after Alamein we never had a defeat." Even allowing for the material advantages that Monty had over his predecessors in the theatre, the victory in the Western Desert belonged to him and was exemplary of his particular, highly methodical application of his intuitive fingerspitzgefuhl; "This campaign, demonstrating the battle-winning ingredients of morale, intimate co-operation of all arms including the air weapon, first-class logistical back-up and clear-cut orders, would be Montgomery's legacy to modern field command, ending in a brilliant infantry attack at the Wadi Akarit …" (ODNB)
