        Sänkt sedebetyg. Roman. I-II.

      - Stockholm; Bonniers, 1946. (Romaner i folkupplaga). 19,5x13 cm. 208 & (3, 1 blank), 209-403, (1 blank) s. [?To Kristina, my confidant and beloved! / the author?]. Inscribed also in the second volume: ?Till min käraste! / Författaren? [To my dearest! / The Author?]. Vilhelm Moberg (1898-1973), Swedish journalist, social critic, and one of Sweden?s foremost authors of the 20th century. He was born in Algutsboda in the province of Småland, where his father served as a soldier. Moberg worked in his youth with farming and forestry. After a few years of schooling, he worked as a journalist at different provincial newspapers, in which he also published his first short stories. His breakthrough as an author came in 1927 with the novel ?Raskens. The Story of a Soldier?s Family?, where he depicts the life of the tenant farmers in 19th century Småland. His foremost work, which has been widely translated and is considered one of the finest epic works in Swedish 20th century literature, is ?The Emigrant Novels? (1949-1959). In this tetralogy he describes the Swedish emigration to North America through the story of the farmer Karl Oskar Nilsson and his wife Kristina. Moberg was politically engaged and always fought for individual rights, and for the abolition of the monarchy and the State Church of Sweden. He intervened in affairs of corrupt legal practice and published the bestselling book ?Why I am a Republican? (1955). His political views were inspired by his visits to USA and by the Swiss constitution. Moberg had a love affair with a woman named Kristina, whose name he used for the main character Kristina from Duvemåla of ?The Emigrant Novels? This love affair has remained unknown for over half a century, until a collection of his novels, all inscribed by Moberg to Kristina [Odelberg/Hedenblad (1917-2005)], appeared on the market. Judging from the tone in the inscriptions, the relation between Moberg and Kristina was initially intimate and loving, and gradually devolving into affection. In the early inscriptions from the 1940s Moberg writes, for instance: ?To Kristina, my confidant and beloved!?, and in the play ?Chastity? he writes: ?Vilhelm Moberg?s chastity ? what is left of it is hereby dedicated to Kristina? The later in-scriptions from the 1960s contain phrases like: ?with a devout greeting? and ?from her affectionate Vilhelm? In the copy of ?The Emigrants? (?Utvandrarna?, 1949) Moberg writes: ?To Kristina, my be loved, who has lent her name to the female main character in this book, with gratitude and love from The Author.? In the last inscription, in the pocket edition of ?The Emigrant Novels? from 1969, he returns to the fact that she has given her name to Kristina from Duvemåla, which shows that the thought of her had occupied his mind during all these years, and it is also a sign of her probable influence on his writing from 1945 onwards. What further strengthens this opinion is the copy of ?Our Unborn Son?, a play from 1945, which deals with the issue of abortion. This is the only one of these books that has been bestowed with a fine leather binding, with a pocket at end of the volume where Kristina has collected newspaper cuttings on the book and its author, suggesting that the theme of this novel was essential to her. The book was translated into Danish in 1947, and in the collection there is a copy of the Danish edition which has been inscribed to Kristina by the translator thus: ?? This book, which is partly about you?? [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Original ticket and invitation letter to Churchill's famous 5 March 1946 "Iron Curtain" speech at Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri

Fulton, Missouri: Westminster College, 1946. This is an original ticket and letter of invitation to Churchill's famous "Iron Curtain" speech delivered at Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri on March 5, 1946. There, Churchill coined the phrase that described the division between the Soviet Union's sphere of influence and the West. This speech incisively framed the Cold War that would dominate the second half of the Twentieth Century: "From Stettin in the Baltic to Trieste in the Adriatic, an iron curtain has descended across the Continent.... I repulse the idea that a new war is inevitable; still more that it is imminent... If we adhere faithfully to the Charter of the United Nations and walk forward in sedate and sober strength seeking no one's land or treasure, seeking to lay no arbitrary control upon the thoughts of men... the high-roads of the future will be clear, not only for us but for all, not only for our time, but for a century to come." Then-President Harry S. Truman traveled with Churchill by special train from Washington D.C. for the twenty four hour overnight journey to Jefferson City, Missouri specifically to introduce Churchill in Fulton. With them was Fleet Admiral William D. Leahy. During the journey, the three men discussed recent Soviet provocations in northern Persia and Turkey. "During the morning of March 5, as the train continued westward along the Missouri river, Churchill completed his speech for Fulton. It was then mimeographed on the train, and a copy shown to Truman" who told Churchill that he “thought it was admirable” and “would do nothing but good, though it would make a stir.” (Gilbert, Vol. VIII, pp.196-197). Upon arriving in Jefferson City shortly before noon on March 5, Churchill, Truman, and Leahy drove to Fulton, where they met and lunched with Dr. Franc L. McCluer, the College president, before the academic procession and delivery of the speech. Though the subject of the speech was of utmost gravity, Churchill began with characteristic wit: “The name ‘WestminsterÂ’ is somehow familiar to me. I seem to have heard of it before.” The speech was broadcast throughout the United States. We have never before offered an original ticket and this is no surprise. In the invitation letter from the Westminster College McCluer specifically stated: "Every seat in the Gymnasium and in the Chapel at the College will be reserved. Seats are non-transferable. Since we have a long waiting list, if for any reason you are unable to use your ticket, please return it to us, or if your plans are changed at the last minute, wire us." Though it is difficult to understand how the holder of this ticket could choose to leave it unused, we can be glad that he did. The ticket is printed on one side in dark blue ink on medium blue heavy card stock and measures 3 x 5 inches. The bottom of the ticked is printed "No. 438" at the bottom center. Typed at the top of the ticket is the name of the recipient, a "Mr. Henry N. Oliver". Condition of the ticket is near fine, clean with unfaded color, marred only by mild creasing to the lower corners. The ticket is protected in a clear, removable, heavy mylar sleeve. The accompanying TLS of 18 February 1946 is printed on Westminster College stationery, measures 9.375 inches by 5.875 inches, with a typed message signed by Westminster College President Dr. Franc L. McCluer. The letter is in fine condition, with two horizontal creases ostensibly from the original mailing, but otherwise clean, bright, and without wear. The letter is protected in a removable, archival mylar sleeve.

        Heads Bodies & Legs

(Harmondsworth, Middlesex): Penguin, 1946. Chopping, Richard. Small octavo. Single page of text, followed by twelve leaves cut horizontally into three sections. First edition. Cut-figure book illustrated by Richard Chopping, who is perhaps best-known for designing the dust wrappers of Ian Fleming's James Bond novels. A brief narrative introduces the reason for these cut figures, which are the result of an apprentice magician's attempts to "unbewitch" a group of people and creatures that were affected by his absent master's magic. It all went awry, and this book offers one the chance to put things right, or make them even worse. This book was reprinted in 1951 and 1955; the 1946 first printing is a bit more elusive. This is a fine copy in color illustrated wrappers.

        The House on The Borderland.

Sauk City Arkham House 1946. Large 8vo. 640pp. Near fine in publisher's black cloth titled and decorated in gilt to spine, very minor dulling. In a near fine dustwrapper with the bare minimum of edgewear. Sharp, bright and clean, a most superior copy. Incorporating a kind of "Welcome to William Hope Hodgson" approach whereby most of his major works are presented alongside an essay by H.C. Koenig, and an attempt at a bibliography. Hodgson led an extraordinary life; ran away to sea, was the first person to photgraph stalk lightning from a ship in a storm, taught self defense to the Bradford police force, had an altercation with Houdini, wrote a number of blindingly splendid weird tales that influenced everyone from Lovecraft to Gary Gygax, signed up as a relatively senior soldier during the First World War and was finally disintegrated by a shell in Belgium at the age of 41. He was an all round marvel of a chap, and notwithstanding his urge to lapse into faux 17th century narrative prose (something that Lovecraft might have emulated with more success), his weird tales are some of the most atmospheric and exciting around. Probably his most well known creation (outside of a couple of his characters making guest appearances in "Lost") would have to be Thomas Carnacki, psychic detective and "Ghost Finder." whose adventures ran in The Idler magazine in 1910. Everyone should read William Hope Hodgson, thank you for your attention.

        Past All Dishonor

1946 - CAIN, James M. Past All Dishonor. H.N. Swanson, [circa 1946]. Quarto, original mimeographed typescript measures 8-1/2 by 11 inches, bound with brads, original black wrappers, 185 leaves with typescript on recto only (paginated at 183), paper label affixed to front wrapper. $1650.Advance mimeographed typewritten draft of Cain’s Civil War crime novel, a favorite of Cain’s for its use of “the old switcheroo,” in manuscript format for submission to Hollywood studios, preceding the 1946 publication of his novel and containing parts changed in the final published edition.Submitted by James M. Cain’s agents at H.N. Swanson to Hollywood studios at the height of his career, this early manuscript of Past All Dishonor contains elements altered in the final published novel. Though it would ultimately be one of the few Cain novels not filmed, the novel, published in 1946, remained one of the writer’s favorite works, expressing a theme that defined his artâ€"the excitement of chasing a dream and the ruin hidden in its capture. Years later Cain recalled the novel with particular pride, particularly its use of “the old switcheroo” that was perfected in this story of Civil War deserter, a prostitute and a train robbery. “This was a very nice situation,” he noted, “and I was able to top it, and that’s always what you try to do… You pull it, you switch it, you top it” (Paris Review). H.N. Swanson, Cain’s literary agency, also represented writers such as Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald and Raymond Chandler. See Hubin, 62.         A Matter of Life and Death (Original UK Film Program, signed by Michael Powell)

The Archers / Eagle-Lion, 1946. Original UK Program for the 1946 film, "A Matter of Life and Death" (released in the US as "Stairway to Heaven"), directed by Michael Powell, written for the screen by Emeric Pressburger, and starring David Niven, Kim Hunter, Richard Attenborough, Roger Livesey, and Raymond Massey. SIGNED by director Michael Powell on page 12, just above the photo next to his biographical sketch. While it is certainly arguable that the greatest Powell-Pressburger film is a 10-way tie for first place, "A Matter of Life and Death" is probably the most philosophically ambitious of their masterpieces. David Niven is a British wartime aviator who unwittingly cheats death, and must ultimately argue for his continued existence before a celestial court. In between these two events is a wildly imaginative and surreal tale, told first in Technicolor (on earth), then in Dye-Monochrome black-and-white (in heaven). This oversize program book evokes the spirit of the film beautifully, with clever use of two-color processes (mostly pink and blue) throughout. Includes biographies and large photos of the principal actors, reviews, an essay about the techniques used to shoot the film, and credits for the cast and crew. The credits and promotion are specific to the British (not international or American) distribution of the film through Eagle-Lion and General Distributors. Self-wrappers, 14.5 x 11.5 inches, saddle-stitched. Very Good plus condition with fine shallow creasing at the wrapper extremities.

Story in Prints. First Edition. Volume 1-[4]. December 1, 1946. For the Use of World Export Trade of Silk Fabrics.

102 numbered sheets, each with a hand-painted sample, ranging from 370 x 300 to 150 x 120 mm., & three smaller hand-painted samples measuring 40 x 40 mm., totaling 408 hand-painted samples. Each volume has 9 preliminary leaves of text. Large folio (533 x 442 mm.), orig. canvas-covered boards, each with titling on the upper cover, sewn as issued. [Tokyo]: Compiled by Boeki-Cho the Board of Trade, Ministry of Commerce & Industry of Japan, [1946]. First edition of this magnificent work containing 408 hand-painted samples on paper of designs for textiles available for production. Following the end of World War II, the Supreme Commander for Allied Powers (SCAP) and the Japanese Board of Trade were eager for Japan to revive industries and to build up foreign exchange reserves through trade. The production of textiles was an immediate avenue to pursue. This set of albums was compiled to display the possible designs available, produced either by screen or stencil or by roller printing. Some of the designs could only be executed by hand while others could be printed by roller. The preliminary leaves detail minimum quantities to be ordered, fastness of colors, variation of colors, prices, delivery, widths and lengths, quality control, shipping methods, production abilities, and instructions on how to order. The names of the designers of each sample are given as well as the names of the principal textile manufacturers of Japan. We learn from the preliminary leaves David Heritch, a textile expert attached to the Foreign Trade Division of SCAP, assisted the designers. The samples are all hand-painted and of the greatest beauty. The 102 large samples, measuring 370 x 150 to 150 x 120 mm., contain the principal design and the smaller samples, three each, depict color variation possibilities. Fine set. One of the small samples has come loose and is attached to the tissue guard sheet, obscuring the image. .

The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, 1946 1st Edition in Dust Jacket, with Custom Leather Slipcase

Allen & Unwin, London 1946 - 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, by J.R.R. Tolkien. Fourth impression published 1946, the final publication of the 1st Edition. The decorative map endpapers are clean & bright in Fine condition. No previous owners names or other writing noted. Color frontispiece, 8 mono plates, and text block all in Very Good Plus condition, a bit of wrinkling to the pages, as if stored in a damp location, but no evidence of direct moisture contact. Straight and square, no spine lean, a well protected copy, very unusual for these early 1st Editions to survive in this condition. Produced in conformity with the war time standard's, with the distinctive 'War Time Economy Standards' title verso. This copy has its original unclipped dustjacket in Very Good Minus condition. The previous owner has reinforced the edges and folds with brown tape to the interior of the dustjacket. This has helped preserve the dustjacket, although it does show considerable wear to the edges, and the flap folds are starting to split. Dustjacket is in an archival protector, to help preserve this unrestored original dustjacket. Pages are clean, no tears or stains. The green topstain is almost completely faded, and a bit dusty. No shelf wear to the edges of the boards, only lightly bumped corners. The top of the back board has a area that looks like a burn mark, leaving an exposed edge of the boards approx. 3/4" in length. The original decorative green cloth, is unsoiled without any fading to the spine area. Despite its faults, a beautiful collectable copy, uncommon in it's original dustjacket, now housed in a custom leather slipcase. Digital photo's available, inquire if interested. Other Tolkien books available, include both the UK and US editions, original cloth bindings, custom fine bindings, and Signed/Numbered/Limited Editions. Very Good Plus / Very Good Minus.         [Photo Album]: Military Hospital South Africa 1947

South Africa. 1946-1947. Oblong small quarto measuring 7" x 10". Green plastic photo album with "postcard album" stamped in gilt on the front board. Contains 98 black and white or sepia toned gelatin silver photographs measuring between 1.5" x 2.5" and 3.5" x 4.5" with some captions. Album is near fine with slightly bowed boards with fine photographs.A collection of photos from the Baragwanath Military Hospital, also referred to as BMH, in South Africa shortly after World War II beginning in 1946. Commissioned in 1940, BMH was built in response to the hostilities of World War II and the large number of causalities. The British War office requested that South Africa create two hospitals with a total of 1,200 beds for the Middle East Command. Fueled by a war that was not going well for the Allies, the hospital was completed and able to admit it's first patient six months after it's approval and was named "The Imperial Military Hospital, Baragwanath". By the end of the war the hospital was treating men from both the Middle Eastern and Far Eastern Commands, most of whom suffered from Tuberculosis. The photos here show the hospital post war where British and Commonwealth soldiers were still recovering from their war wounds and disease they contracted while fighting. The album appears to have been kept by one of the medical staff of the hospital and shows uniformed men on and off duty in South Africa. The barracks and tented encampments used throughout the facility are shown here with men posing for pictures. One photo shows an orderly dressed up in scrubs with a face mask and a knife tucked into his belt. There are photos of the coast depicting battleships, including the HMS Bermuda, as well as men swimming during their leisure time with action shots of diving and men lounging on beaches. The city of Johannesburg is seen in pictures of the locals, the town center, and shops. One drug store has a sign that announces they speak English. In 1947 the Royal Family made the journey to South Africa and stopped at BMH to visit soldiers and present medals to those wounded in action. The photos here show the preparation for the Royal family with men laying a carpet for the King to stand on when handing out the medals. There is a distant shot of the Royal Family standing in front of the crowd and a photograph of the crowd as they stand aside while the Royals pass through. The hospital was eventually bought by the government of South Africa and began to focus it's care on the indigenous black population. It is now the largest hospital in South Africa. An intriguing collection of post war photography from a military hospital. .
