On verra bien. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

        [Archive]: British Liberation Army Electrician

England, Belgium, 1946. Near Fine/Near Fine. An archive of 110 photographs, six diaries, two business cards, a fuel ration book, and a page of notes all housed in a small leather makeup case kept by a soldier electrician's wife during World War II. All items very good with curled edges on the photographs and some small tears and age toning. An archive of ephemera kept by an electrician, Arthur Charles Payne, serving with the British Liberation Army between 1943 and 1946. All the items were kept by his wife, "Kay (Kathleen)," after being sent the diaries and photos once they were completed and kept in a leather makeup case. The diaries begin in 1943 and are small daily "note-a-day" style books discussing the day to day of Payne's life in the army. Some of the diaries are dedicated to his wife and all of them request they be returned to his wife if found. Payne began his training at Bovington Camp in January of 1943 learning to repair tanks. The camp was used beginning in 1937 as a training facility for driving and maintenance. These entries discuss his early training as well as leaves taken, phone calls with Kay, and his daily life at the camp. A typical entry reads, "Practical test this morning. Disposal lecture 49.4%. 3rd class electrics recommended 2nd. Packing for my departure." An entry from March 1943 simply reads, "making arrangements for wedding" when he married Kay in London and they took a short honeymoon before he returned to his duties. The second diary continues into 1944 with similar entries discussing crashed planes, trips to the "pictures," and his work. A charming entry on September 5th reads, "Kathleen's birthday, my darling wife. Wherever I may be on this day I shall be thinking of her, loving her more and more -- happy birthday. Many happy returns of the day my pet -- I love you dearly." He was assigned to overseas duty in mid-1944 and the diary ends then with a note reading, "handing this diary over to my wife for safe keeping. If anything should happen to me all I have is her. I hope nothing will. I love her dearly, she is so sweet. May I come back for her sake. Love her, she does work too hard though. God bless her."A diary stamped "Agenda 1944" is hand titled "Souvenir of Watteren, Belgium British Liberation Army June 22nd 1944 to ---- West Yorkshire Regt 269 Forward Special Delivery Squadron." He begins, "our first sighting of France, smoldering buildings, some explosions from the shore, huge masses of ships on either side down the coast a little way battleships, bombarding shore batteries." Later he writes, "saw our first Jerry plane, heavy ack ack." Later he writes, "a dog fight overhead & ack ack fire, Jerry got away." Many of the entries discuss crashes, overhead dogfights, and the ever present ack ack fire. When he wasn't busy with the war he used his leisure time to go to the movies, write home, and play cards with other soldiers. Payne was in Belgium for the liberation and stayed through the rest of year and into 1945. Once the war was over Payne participated in the British Army of the Rhine which was involved in operations in occupied Germany. Most of the photographs featured here are from his time in Germany after the war which show uniformed men with Army equipment, refugees, and captured enemy equipment. Almost every photo is captioned in detail on the verso. Also included is a photograph of Kay encase in plastic with a dried four leaf clover, a lucky charm used by Payne during his tour of duty.An interesting collection of diaries and photographs detailing a British soldier's time during World War II.

Varsovie:: American Joint Distribution Committee, 1946., 1946. 8vo. 264, [4] pp. 11 black and white photographic plates, 50 tables, charts, index. Original printed wrappers; scotch tape along spine, front and rear covers age-darkened, first 3 pages (including half title), and last three blank end-papers are loose. Main body of work remains bound and in good condition. Loose pages have some slight area of extremities missing. Some fading and foxing to pages. Thus, wrappers poor, but text good to good plus. First edition. SEMINAL WORK IN MEDICAL CLINICAL RESEARCH & A CRITICAL ARTIFACT OF THE WARSAW GHETTO AND HOLOCAUST. Copies of the book are uncommon, in part because of the fragile nature of the paper used to publish the report. In the immediate aftermath of World War II, paper, ink, and binding facilities in Europe were scarce. The published report was done with economy in mind, and with a rushed sense of needing to reveal to the world what happened. / Six articles report on the clinical research by 28 Jewish physicians and a student intern (the 1946 book only records the names of 21 physicians and the student - subsequent research in the 1960s revealed the additional names) who conducted the studies on adults and children at the two Jewish hospitals in the Ghetto. Abbreviated biographies of the physicians can be found in The Uses of Adversity: Studies of Starvation in the Warsaw Ghetto by Leonard Tushnet, published in 1966. The physicians hoped to study these patients to somehow benefit humanity, perhaps in the spirit of the Jewish concept of tikkun olam - to repair the world. The studies were conducted in secret, since any scientific research in the Ghetto was prohibited by the Nazi overseers. It is also quite possible that many, if not all, the clinical physicians believed that granting children and others the status of being a patient would protect them by preventing their transport out of the ghetto to death camps. Theories also suggest that the physicians wanted to preserve a record of the atrocities being committed, as well as advance medical research. The studies remain the most comprehensive research of the effects and progression of starvation, in part because any contemporary studies would largely be blunted by existing ethical guidelines for informed consent and subject welfare. Contemporary debates about the ethical wisdom of conducting these studies remains contentious. / The Warsaw Ghetto occupied approximately 1.3 square miles (3.4km2), and its population was as much as 500,000 men, women, and children. The Ghetto was a staging area for transporting Polish and Eastern European Jews to the death camps, and a locale for starving to death Jews prior to transport. The average daily caloric intake of a resident of the Ghetto was 600 to 800 calories of low-protein food for adults. This amount was calculated by Adolf Eichmann to starve-to-death most of the residents in approximately nine months. The physicians performing the research were no exception to the plan. All were starving as they performed their studies. Equipment for clinical research was smuggled into the hospitals. / Each article in the book is devoted to specific results of these studies. Chapter V offers autopsy results on 710 patients; 492 died of starvation and 218 died of complications of secondary conditions. Chapter VI offers clinical observations of one-hundred adults who died from starvation. Chapter VII offers clinical observations of 40 children who died of starvation. Chapter VIII examines the effects of starvation on the cardiovascular system in adults and children. Chapter IX discusses changes in peripheral blood and bone marrow. Ophthalmic responses to starvation are discussed in Chapter X. Only one doctor engaged in the research, Emil Apfelbaum, survived the war. He arranged to have the studies smuggled out of the Ghetto to a Polish professor of medicine, who released the reports after the liberation of Warsaw. After the war, Apfelbaum edited the report for publication by the Joint Distribution Committee. He died a week before the book was published. / Research was performed at the two hospitals in the Ghetto from late February to July 22, 1942. On July 22 the hospitals were closed and any patients unable to be transported were summarily executed regardless of age. The attending and clinical physicians were fully aware of the fate awaiting transported patients, and in many instances, they performed euthanasia on elderly and child patients who were scheduled for transport. Some of the physicians committed suicide rather than face transport. Other physicians accompanied their patients to the death camps, providing whatever aid they could. / The studies were smuggled out of the ghetto in a manner befitting a Ken Follet thriller. A Jewish physician, Henryk Fenigstein, played a crucial role. "Before the war Henryk was a stamp collector. In fact, he had one of the largest collections of Polish stamps in the country. One day two SS members arrived at the hospital and told Henryk to come with them to Gestapo headquarters. Of course, he was terrified. Jews taken to Gestapo headquarters did not return. On arrival he was taken to the office of a senior officer who told him that he himself was an avid stamp collector. He took out a list and handed it to Henryk. He wondered if Henryk had these stamps and if not if he knew where to procure them. Henryk told him that he had many of the stamps, including some of the very rare ones. He told him that he thought he could procure the rest. In order to do this he would need a pass to get out of the ghetto for a few hours each week. And of course the SS officer was welcome to those that he had. The officer agreed and even gave Henryk his phone number in case he needed any help. Thus, Henryk Fenigstein, a key member of the study team, was able to leave the ghetto" (2005 lecture, Myron Winick). During such an outing, Fenigstein arranged for the smuggling of the reports. A pregnant woman reportedly was used to hide the documents and transport them out of the ghetto. / The supervising physician of the project, Israel Milejkowski, wrote in his Introduction to the studies that each author refused to allow the Nazis to destroy their work, and that through the research and the publication of that research, "Nous avons termine nos Recherches et nous les conserverons bien, comme c'etait Ton desir. Les paroles immortelles que Tu a jetees "Non omnius Moriar" doivent etre en premier lieu appliquees a Toi! Gloire eternelle a Ta Memoire !" / The research, as well as results from the Minnesota Semi-Starvation studies of 1944-1945, continues to benefit the millions of persons facing starvation each year. The participants in the Minnesota study lost an average of 25% of pre-test body weight, and the final phase of the study included recovery techniques and methods. The Warsaw studies measured effects until death. This artifact of scientific integrity, individual bravery, and resistance to oppression, is a rare opportunity to truly own a small piece of history illuminating the courage of physicians determined to use their craft to help the world and advance the memory of atrocities.

Phi Beta Kappa(1946). 1st Separate Edition. No Wrappers. 8vo. 4 pages ; 25 cm. "Re-printed from American Scholar, Volume XV, no. 2." An early introduction to the term genocide from Raphael Lemkin, the lawyer who coined the term, two years after Lemkin first introduced the term in his book Axis Rule in Occupied Europe: Laws of Occupation, Analysis of Government, Proposals for Redress, and two years before he initiated the Genocide Convention. This is one of the first publications to ever define the term; in it, Lemkin writes, "Would mass murder be an adequate name for such a phenomenon? We think not these considerations led the author of this article to the necessity of coining a new term for this particular concept: genocide. The word is made from the ancient Greek word genos (race, clan) and the Latin suffix (killing) . Thus genocide in its formation would correspond to such words as tyrannicide, homicide, patricide.         Hawaiian Lu'au.

Waikiki (Honolulu): Fisher Corporation, 1946. Quarto. (126)pp. Illustrated with twenty-nine color plates, which richly depict different aspects of a Hawai'ian luau. Images of the food, dancing, music, and people together evoke the joy and excitement of a traditional luau. Each illustration is preceded by a transparent guard sheet, on which is printed a descriptive lyrical stanza. At the back, Sanders has provided a dictionary of Hawaiian words used in the volume's text. Though Sanders is unknown outside of this present work, Marcel Cailliet spent much of his life as an art instructor, employed by Arizona State Teacher's College, Navy Pacific University, and a private school in Honolulu. He was also an ensign in the U.S. Navy during World War II, being stationed in Virginia, Washington, D.C., and Pearl Harbor. Cailliet's style is reminiscent of the colorful and exaggerated characteristics of other early twentieth-century artists in the western United States, such as Thomas Hart Benton and Milford Zornes. Cailliet's work bears particular similarity to his fellow Californian Millard Sheets, with whom he studied in Pomona, CA. This volume exemplifies the richness and vitality of the work of Cailliet and his peers of western America. Bound in boards and fastened with screw-type rivets, corners slightly bumped, upper board splayed. Scant foxing to first and final pages, else a fine copy of a scarce volume rich in color and culture.

Photographs of the Disposition of Ships in Bikini Test of Atom Bomb

[Washington, D.C.: GPO, 1946. Collection of 23 gelatin silver images mounted on thick card. Images and mounts vary slightly in size, most images are approximately 4.5" x 3.5" on slightly larger cards. Each image is identified in the negative. Undated but certainly very nearly contemporary with the test. Near fine or better. The first image shows a map of the disposition of the ships for the Test, two show aerial views of the disposition, and the remaining 20 images are of the various ships that were used in the text; a few show more than one angle of the same ship. In July, 1946 the Navy gathered a group of obsolete American ships, as well as captured Japanese and German warships in order to test the atomic bomb against a fleet. This group of photographs was for the Able test held in July of 1946, the first of two tests. The Able Test was for an air dropped bomb; the Baker Test, launched against the remaining ships, was for an underwater based nuke. During the Test, the Japanese battleship Nagato, from which the Pearl Harbor attack had been directed was positioned near ground zero in order to guarantee being sunk, but the combination of the bomb missing the drop point and the battleship's stern-on orientation to the bomb protected her, and the symbolic sinking had to wait another three weeks until the Baker Test. The images here are exclusively of American ships that were used in the test. Nice documentation of the infamous Tests.

[Attributes: Soft Cover]

United States of America vs. Hiroshi Tamura.

1946 - 8 vols. 5 original tipped-in photographs and several mimeographed tables. Complete English text. In-4to.Navy blue paper-board (spine of vol 6 damaged), title piece stamped on the front page, light browning throughout due to poor paper quality, but overall in very good condition. Unpaginated, but ca. 10,000pp. Tokyo, International Military Tribunal Far East, The International Military Tribunal for the Far East, abbreviated as TMIEO was created on January 19, 1946 to prosecute major Japanese war criminals of the Second World War.Tamura Hiroshi was Head of the Prisoner of War Information Bureau. He was considered an A-class war criminal and was sentenced to 8 years in prison in February 23rd, 1949. The trial was conducted under the direction of the Supreme Command of the Allied Powers (SCAP).In order to show the international dimension of trial, an Australian officer was appointed president of the proceedings. The charge against Tamura was willful disregard of duties in contravention to the Geneva Conventions, in particular his refusal to allow members of the Red Cross access to POW camps. His defence argued that Tamurawas entirely dependent on the orders from above. This extremely detailed archive of examination of evidence and counter-evidence shows the remarkable will of the Allied Forces to be seen to be following the letter of the law to the highest possible standard.

        History of Western Philosophy

London: George Allen and Unwin Ltd,, 1946. and its connection with political and social circumstances from the earliest times to the present day. Octavo. Original grey cloth, spine lettered in yellow on a brown background. With the dust jacket. A little bit of foxing to text block, otherwise an excellent copy in the jacket, spine ends lightly creased. First UK edition, first impression. Russell's compendious account of the history of philosophy, from the Orphism of Ancient Greece to the Logical Positivism of the author's present day, was a triumph of his populist craft and is perhaps his most famous book. Written during the Second World War, Russell's project was in part conceived to explain to his audience the exact nature of the "civilisation" for which they were fighting. Appropriately, the dust jackets were printed on the backs of surplus Second World War maps, this one showing a part of Germany. Simon & Schuster published the first US edition in the preceding year.

        The Three Railway Engines.

Edmund Ward. Leicester 1946 - The first book in the "Railway Series" by Rev. Awdry was this title. This is probably the second or third printing. The dust wrapper is present but price clipped, the boards are original green cloth gilt. The only title mentioned in the advert at rear of volume is "Thomas the Tank Engine" which was published in 1946. Slight rubbing to head and tail of spine, small area of rubbing along bottom edge near lower corner. Wrapper sl. soiled, endpapers browned, page 58 has small crease otherwise both wrapper and pages are remarkably crisp, clean and bright. VG+/VG+. A very attractive, early and scarce copy of Rev. Awdry's first book. The book is dated using the use of the term "fat director" which is present on pages 40, 42, 52, 54, 56 and 60. In the 1947 editon and after he was renamed famously "The Fat Controller". He first appears on page 40 as "a fat director" but in later pages he becomes "the fat director". [Attributes: Hard Cover]

[Attributes: Signed Copy]

The Complete Poems and Stories of Edgar Allan Poe.

New York, NY: Alfred A Knopf, 1946.. FIRST BORZOI EDITION. Two volumes. Octavo, pp.x, 542; x, 1087. Illustrated with suitably arresting colour plates by McKnight Kauffer. Bound in recent half blue calf, the original cloth boards laid down, with raised bands, gilt compartments, twin red labels, gilt titles and decoration to spine. Housed in a custom-made slipcase, bound in blue cloth. A fine example, inside and out. A handsome set of the works of the extraordinary Gothic savant. When considering his traumatic and brief life story, it is easy to see how his sensibility for the darker side of human nature arose - but this still fails to explain the sheer fecundity of his imagination, or the brilliance of his writing.
