POPPER, K. R.
London: George Routledge & Sons, Ltd, 1945. London: George Routledge & Sons, Ltd,, 1945. Volume I: The Spell of Plato. Volume II: The High Tide of Prophecy: Hegel, Marx, and the Aftermath. 2 volumes, octavo. Original black cloth, spines lettered in gilt. Extremities lightly rubbed, spines rolled, ends and corners bumped, small knock to fore edges of volume I, contents toned, overall a very good set. Ownership inscription of artist Augustus John (1878–1961) to front free endpaper of volume I and one marginal annotation to page 99 of the same. First edition, first impression, of the author's influential first book. "The Open Society was, deservedly, a great success; and so was its author. It appeared in November 1945, and Popper arrived the following January [from New Zealand] to find himself a rising star in the British philosophical firmament. Gilbert Ryle wrote an enthusiastic review of The Open Society and its Enemies for Mind. Bertrand Russell wrote an enthusiastic recommendation on its behalf to his own American publisher, and spoke warmly of Popper's demolition of Plato when he delivered his well-known lecture 'Philosophy and politics' in October 1946 … The 'open society' had obvious affinities with what John Stuart Mill had argued for in On Liberty: a society in which argument was the norm, where moral, political, scientific, and religious doctrines were constantly questioned and revised. What was unusual about The Open Society and its Enemies was not only its sustained assault on the enemies of the open society but its concentration on the way in which their philos … [Click Below for Full Description]

Wichita Falls, Texas: Raley Portraits, 1945. Fine. Portrait photograph of an African-American aviator. Measuring 3" x 5" gelatin silver print. Fine in about fine card frame and name of "Raley Portraits" on both mount and verso of the image. The unidentified aviator is pictured wearing a leather helmet and goggles, white scarf, and leather flight jacket. The patch on the jacket indicates that he served with the Army Airways Communications System (AACS) which began in 1943. While the patch is missing the white border that indicates post-WWII service, we cannot confirm the exact date of the photo. The aviator is unidentified, but with presumably a relatively small number of African-American pilots thus employed, further identification might require only some modest research.

Widmungsexemplar - Patrick Modiano - Modiano, Patrick.
Peake, Mervyn
Eyre & Spottiswoode, London 1945 - Peake's first book -- the 1945 is actually the second edition, with color screens added to the internal pages, as most copies of the 1939 true first were reported "destroyed by enemy action early in the war." Large, slim octavo signed to the blank FFE "Mervyn Peake '47." This copy acquired from the Old Aberdeen Bookshop, Aberdeen, whose proprietor informs us "The signature is genuine according to the lady who sold this book. Given to her mother by the author in Sark, Channel Islands, UK." And indeed, the distinctive signature matches others available Online. None of the usual warping to the boards, here, though there's also no dust jacket. Charming if somewhat odd pirate fantasy. (Actual relationship of the pirate captain and the Yellow Creature remains unclear, and thus possibly non-traditional.) [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

CILLEY, Charles D.
[Limburg, Germany, 1945. Near Fine. A series of eight pen and ink and watercolor drawings by Charles D. Cilley, an American sergeant with the 52nd Armored Infantry Division, depicting his wartime experience at a German P.O.W. camp after his capture during the Battle of the Bulge. All eight drawings are on paper sheets measuring about 12" x 9.5". Scattered old tape stains on the back edges, near fine. Though not numbered or captioned, the eight drawings chronicle the main events after Cilley's capture in December 1944, beginning with a drawing of an endless column of American GIs snaking its way through a cold winter landscape under a starry night. A second drawing shows prisoners being transported in railroad boxcars (one of which is marked "Deutschland Reichseisenbahn" or "German Railroad"): they are shown taking a break while under guard, high up in a mountainous area on a clear day. Cilley and thousands of other American prisoners were sent to Stalag XIIA, a "notoriously bad" P.O.W. camp located in Diez, a small village on the Lahn river near Limburg, Germany. It was initially set up to serve as a transit camp, where newly captured prisoners were interrogated before being sent on to other better organized P.O.W. camps deeper inside of Germany. However, by the end of the war Stalag XIIA served both as a transit hub and makeshift permanent residence for prisoners captured on both the Eastern and Western Fronts, including many British and Russian soldiers, as well as Indian soldiers captured in North Africa. Cilley remained at Stalag XIIA until it was liberated by troops … [Click Below for Full Description]

JAPAN - TOKYO)
Japan Travel Bureau.. 1945.. Color pictorial map of Tokyo on sheet approximately 21 x 28 3/4 inches. An uncommon pictorial Occupation map, colorful and in good condition. Light overall wear and toning, 1/2 inch separation at one fold intersection, a two inch separation at the left margin centerfold, map is clean and bright. Pictorial images identify numerous buildings and sites. Dating of the map is based on research pertaining to two buildings, the first the Ernie Pyle building near the Imperial Hotel, depicted on an inset "Map of Marunouchi" 3 1/2 x7 1/4 inches. A web site pertaining to the building states: “The Takarazuka Theater, at Yurakucho, was requisitioned by Occupation forces from 1945-1952 for use as movie and stage theater for Allied military personnel. During this time it was named the “Ernie Pyle” theater, after the beloved American journalist killed in 1945 during the Iwo Jima campaign.” The map also depicts, pictorially, the Imperial Household Museum, now the Tokyo National Museum. Their website states “The museum went through several name changes, being called the Imperial Museum in 1886 and the Tokyo Imperial Household Museum in 1900, until it was given its present title in 1947.” The map is clearly based on one published in 1945; it can be viewed at the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library and Yale University. Acquired with this map were: 1. six additional maps acquired in the same lot, which are rather muddy photostat copies, five of which are maps folding to 8 3/4 x 7 inches (the sixth map, of Nagasaki, is a single sheet of this size. Rust cloth in publisher's yellow, black & white illustrated dustjacket. A near fine copy in like dustjacket (light wear to extremities; small, round shadow of label removal to front flap). Primarily plates and illustrations (about half in color). 56 + [5] pp. Light boards wrapped in dustjacket. About 35 x 25 cm. This fragile publication is one of the four most sought-after issues of Verve. As usual, it is worn at the extremities; the backstrip of the paper cover has been repaired and strengthened from the inside. An elegant, unobtrusive signature on the title page reads "Spencer Barefoot." Perhaps it is not the same person as a popular singer of the Sixties and Seventies from New Jersey whose real name was Steve Tracy. Laid in: a subscription card to Verve from about 1938, when Esquire-Coronet handled American sales. **Free domestic or international shipping with direct order.

HOLLAND, MARTY
New York: Dutton, 1945. First Edition. Near fine copy with a faint hint of edge wear in a very good lightly used and dust soiled dust jacket with some small chips and tears and a couple of small minor rubbed spots. The basis of the classic film noir motion picture directed by Otto Preminger, starring Alice Faye, Dana Andrews, Linda Darnell, Charles Bickford, Anne Revere, John Carradine, and Bruce Cabot. The story of Eric Stanton (Andrews) who, while down on his luck, falls for a waitress named Stella (Darnell), but marries a wealthy woman named June Mills (Faye), in hopes that his riches will attract the woman he truly loves. Murder and mystery thicken the plot. Scarce.

Doyle, Arthur Conan (source work)]: Lee, Leonard [screenwriter]
[Los Angeles: Universal Pictures], 1945. [1],109 leaves. Quarto. Mimeographed typescript, printed on rectos only of salmon stock. Bradbound. Title leaf pulled a bit at brads, script number stamped on title leaf, with manuscript number and pencil ownership signature, otherwise very good. An unspecified, but interim revised pre- production draft of this adaptation of the Holmes/Watson characters to the screen. The earliest draft of this script we have handled was dated 25 April, and the latest included revises dated 4 August. The film, directed by Roy William Neill, starring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce, involves their protection of the heir of Rovenia after the King of that nation was assassinated. Although well over one hundred and fifty adaptations of Sherlock Holmes to the screen are known, beginning with SHERLOCK HOLMES BAFFLED (1903), the Rathbone-Bruce portrayals have become almost canonical, beginning with THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES (March 1939), and concluding with the twelfth in sequence, DRESSED TO KILL (1946), for which Lee also served as screenwriter. DE WAAL 5157.
