Spooner and his mother, Ruth, while Richard was serving with the 8th Air Force during World War II between 1943 and 1945. Many of the letters are on military letterhead including Spooner's Air Force stationary as well as various bases. Originally from Oregon, Spooner joined the war effort in 1943 and attended the San Antonio Aviation Cadet training center. There he took classes and underwent exams to determine whether he would be trained as a bombardier, navigator, or pilot. An official Air Forces letter dated January 29, 1943 states that Spooner was given his classification, pilot, and began his preflight training which would take about nine weeks. In a letter dated January 30, 1943 he writes to his family, "By the time you get this letter you will probably have gotten my note and the copy of my classification for pilot training. … [Click Below for Full Description]

Tibbets, Paul W.
A Signed Statement on the Last Minute PreparationsFor the Enola Gay signed by Paul W. TibbetsWritten shortly after the dropping of the Atomic Bomb about the Last Minute Preparations made on August 5, 1945. Typical of Tibbets typing were strikeovers and occasional misspellings. He notes that the clouds over Japan were breaking up, the lettering on the nose of the plain which the painter took less than half an hour to complete on the Enola Gay and the loading of the bomb. He gathered the so-called Tinian "joint chiefs" including himself, General Thomas F. Farrell, the Manhattan Project's key ranking officer, Admiral William R. Purnell, Navy Captain William S. "Deak" Parsons, who would be the chief weaponer on the flight: Commander Frederick L. Ashworth, another weaponer, Professor Norman F. Ramsey, who I first met in General [Uzal] Ent's office and Professor Robet Brode. General Farrell sent a message in code to General Groves who in turn passed the word of our scheduled 2:45 A.M. takeoff time to General Marshall. The tension in the Pentagon must have equaled that on Tinian. In the messages that flew back and forth across the Pacific during our period of preparation, there were code names for everything. I was "Yoke", Deak was "Judge", General Farrell was "scale", and General LeMay was "Cannon". The recent atomic test in New Mexico was called "Trinity", atom was "Top", atomic was "Topic" and uranium fission was "Urchin Fashion".At this morning's meetings, Captain Parsons startled us all by expressing concern over our plans to take off with a live atomic explosive in t … [Click Below for Full Description]

BEATON, Cecil.
London: Batsford Ltd, 1945-6. Octavo. Original orange cloth, titles to spine and front cover in blue. With the decorated dust jacket. Slightly bowed, head of spine lightly discoloured, some very light foxing. A very good copy in the dust jacket, spine panel faded, spine panel chipped at head very marginally affecting title, extremities slightly chipped. Frontispiece and 95 monochrome photographic plates. First edition, first impression. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: "With all fond wishes from Cecil Beaton". A fine association copy: Hugh Francis was Controller of Photographs at the Ministry of Information. As Beaton wrote: "When war was declared I knew myself to be incapable of filling any regular service job. Fortunately, Hugh Francis of the M. of I., at the suggestion of Sir Kenneth Clark, saw fit to employ me as a photographer" (The Best of Beaton, 1968). Another version of this story has Francis telling Beaton to "get off the cocktail circuit and back to grass roots" (British Journal of Photography, volume 128, issues 4-52, 1981). Francis also commissioned Bill Brandt to make a full record of life in bomb shelters during the war and he has been described as a "capable and energetic man who had served in the Ministry in the First World War, and who had immediate business experience as a senior executive with EMI" (Charles Craig, The British Documentary Photograph as a Medium of Information and Propaganda during the Second World War, masters degree thesis, Middlesex Polytechnic, 1982).
