Storm, Barry
Southwest Publishing, Tortilla Flat, AZ 1945 - First Edition. INSCRIBED by the author. 8vo. 166 pp. Appendix. Photo-plates; maps. Rust cloth in publisher's yellow, black & white illustrated dustjacket. A near fine copy in like dustjacket (light wear to extremities; small, round shadow of label removal to front flap). This book was the basis for the 1949 film "Lust for Gold" starring Glenn Ford, Ida Lupino and Gig Young. "In Thunder Gods Gold are epitomized incredible truths about lost mines and treasure troves and how the fascinating maps and caalistic symbols denoting their locations often lead to actual fortune - a little-known motivation behind much turbulent frontier history!" - rear flap. The author was ". one of the seminal chroniclers of the Lost Dutchman legend. One of the first writers on the subject to actually go out and explore the regions he wrote about, his colorful and sometimes speculative books and stories have entertained and intrigued masses of treasure hunters and would-be adventurers for many years." - wiki. Matisse, Henri; Tériade, ed.
Paris: Verve, 8 November 1945 Cover, title page (Duthuit 74) and frontispiece ("La chute d'Icare," Duthuit 104) are all silkscreens. Primarily plates and illustrations (about half in color). 56 + [5] pp. Light boards wrapped in dustjacket. About 35 x 25 cm. This fragile publication is one of the four most sought-after issues of Verve. As usual, it is worn at the extremities; the backstrip of the paper cover has been repaired and strengthened from the inside. An elegant, unobtrusive signature on the title page reads "Spencer Barefoot." Perhaps it is not the same person as a popular singer of the Sixties and Seventies from New Jersey whose real name was Steve Tracy. Laid in: a subscription card to Verve from about 1938, when Esquire-Coronet handled American sales. **Free domestic or international shipping with direct order.

Doyle, Arthur Conan (source work)]: Lee, Leonard [screenwriter]
[Los Angeles: Universal Pictures], 1945. [1],109 leaves. Quarto. Mimeographed typescript, printed on rectos only of salmon stock. Bradbound. Title leaf pulled a bit at brads, script number stamped on title leaf, with manuscript number and pencil ownership signature, otherwise very good. An unspecified, but interim revised pre- production draft of this adaptation of the Holmes/Watson characters to the screen. The earliest draft of this script we have handled was dated 25 April, and the latest included revises dated 4 August. The film, directed by Roy William Neill, starring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce, involves their protection of the heir of Rovenia after the King of that nation was assassinated. Although well over one hundred and fifty adaptations of Sherlock Holmes to the screen are known, beginning with SHERLOCK HOLMES BAFFLED (1903), the Rathbone-Bruce portrayals have become almost canonical, beginning with THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES (March 1939), and concluding with the twelfth in sequence, DRESSED TO KILL (1946), for which Lee also served as screenwriter. Mussolini, Benito
no place: No publisher, 1945. Book. Near fine condition. No Binding. Early edition. Two black & white photographs, measuring approximately 4.25 inches x 6.25 inches (105mm x 162mm), depicting the upside-down hanging corpse of Italian Fascist Dictator Benito Mussolini and others on April 29, 1945. A day earlier, Mussolini, his mistress Clara (Claretta) Petacci, her brother, and the dictator's 15 person entourage of ministers and officials of the Italian Social Republic were captured by partisans. They had been traveling with retreating German forces, with Mussolini apparently wearing a German military uniform. They were executed in Giulino di Mezzegra by shooting or firing squad and the bodies transported south of Milan and dumped at the old Piazzale Loreto, which was renamed Piazza Quindici Martiri. After the corpses were shot, kicked, and spat upon, the bodies were hung upside-down on meathooks from the roof of an Esso gas station. The bodies were then stoned by civilians. The site had previously been used for executions of partisans by Axis authories. One photographs shows a total of 7 hanging corpses, identified only by number. Numbers 4 and 5 are Mussolini and his mistress Petacci. Historical records identify number 3 as Achille Starace. A gas pump is clearly visible in the immediate background, as is the gas station. It is almost a straight on shot, maybe 15 degrees to the right, showing 50-60 spectators and a few men facing the crowd, apparently acting as security. There are no G.I.'s shown, although 4-5 men in leather jackets standing directly in front of the corpses … [Click Below for Full Description]
